Arnold Nicely
CLIFTON FORGE — Arnold Clayton "A.C." Nicely, Sr., 73, of 1503 Bryant Street, Clifton Forge, died, Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor.
He was born on June 28, 1931 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Shadrach M. and Susie Conner Nicely.
He was a retired supervisor from A.G. Proctor, a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Clifton Forge and a U.S. Army Veteran. He was an avid small engine repairman. To his family and friends, he was always there, willing to lend a hand. To his grandchildren, he was their loving and devoted pawpaw that will live on forever in their hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Lois Nelson Nicely of Clifton Forge; one daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Timmy Taylor of Clifton Forge; one son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Billee Nicely of Clifton Forge; one step daughter, Marsha Mathieu of Glen Wilton; four sisters, Margaret Griffith of Winchester, Ethel Sue Collins of Clifton Forge, Hazel Burns of New Castle, and JoAnn Land of Roanoke; four brothers, Marion E. Nicely, Carl E. Nicely, Dennis E. Nicely, Sr., and Nolan Ray Nicely, Sr. all of Clifton Forge; nine grandchildren, G. W. Hoke, Jr., Joshua Clayton Hoke, Heather Lanelle Nicely, Lindsay Hannah Nicely, Clayton Heath Nicely, and Kody Lee Nicely; Jamey Woods, Melissa Woods, and John Woods; five great grandchildren, Meagan Bradley, Tyler Woods, Brandon Angle, Alisha Woods, and Hayley Alexis Paitsel; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, Howard "Brownie" Browning, Festus Tucker, Mike Weiford and Otis Marshall.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a step-son, Johnny Myers, Jr.; two brothers, Richard T. Nicely and Shadrach Lewis Nicely; and a sister, Evelyn Smith.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Rev. Bill Dillon and the Rev. John Burns officiating.
Interment will follow in the Sharon Baptist Church, Clifton Forge.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 1503 Bryant Street, Clifton Forge.
Pallbearers will be Michael Weiford and nephews of Mr. Nicely.

Vivian Gabbert
Vivian Pugh Gabbert, 81, of Dolly Ann Apartments, B-6, died this morning, Thursday, March 31, 2005.
She was born March 17, 1924, in Buena Vista, a daughter of the late Roy Thomas Pugh and Bessie Chaplin Wilcher.
Mrs. Gabbert was an employee of the former Industrial Rayon Corporation. Following her Rayon employment, she worked as a cleaning lady for a number of years for many area residents. She was a member of Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern E. Gabbert, in 1983; and also by one brother and two sisters.
Surviving are three daughters, Virginia Smith Hogg and her husband, Ronald, Kathy Lamb Carson and her husband, Lance, and Peggy Redmon, all of Covington; one son, Vern Gabbert, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Plano, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Booze of Lakeland, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael D. Copeland officiating, assisted by the Rev. Walter B. Failes.
The interment will be made in Cedar Hill cemetery.
Friends may pay their respects at anytime at Arritt Funeral Home. The family will receive their friends Saturday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home and at other times will be at the residence of Ronald and Virginia Hogg at 106 Parkview Avenue in Clearwater Park.
Graham Armentrout
CLIFTON FORGE — Graham Lee Armentrout, 73, of 77 Forest Springs Drive, Stuarts Draft, and formerly of Hot Springs, Bath County, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at his residence.
He was born October 28, 1931 in Bath County, a son of the late Herman Brown Armentrout and Marguerite Challendar Armentrout.
A funeral service will be conducted at Friday 2 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, with the Rev. Grant Simmons of Stuart’s Draft officiating and assisted by Les Jones of Centerville.

Dorothy Deaton
FRANKLIN, N.C. — Word has been received of the death of Dorothy “Dickie” Deaton, 72, who died March 29, 2005, in Franklin, N.C.
Survivors include three sisters, Margie Traub of Richmond, Eleanor Bruffey of Clifton Forge, Carolyn Nall of Keystone Heights, Fla., and one brother, G.A. Deaton Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Robert “Bob” Deaton; and a sister, Ruth Gallion.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Franklin.
Harold Dillon
Mr. Harold Fielding Dillon, age 83, of 621 E. Kline Street, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at the Brian Center in Low Moor.
Mr. Dillon was born October 20, 1921 in Nickels Mill, W.Va., the son of the late Michael Dillon and Gladys Baker Dillon. He was a resident of this community for most of his life and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dillon served his country during World War II in the Quartermaster Corp in the United States Army and was a member of Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was employed by Westvaco as a clerk in the storeroom until his retirement in the mid 1980s.
Mr. Dillon is survived by a brother, James M. Dillon of Fincastle; one sister, Elizabeth Dillon Fitchett of Baltimore, Md.; four nieces, Karen Maccabee of Baltimore Md., Maureen Paxton of Mashpee, Mass., Cynthia Lawrence of Roanoke and Melissa Graham of Oakhill; and three nephews, Michael Edward Dillon of St. Ives, England, Gerald Lee Dillon of Northfield, N.J. and Michael Fitchett of Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Dillon was preceded in death by his brother, Phillip Marvin Dillon in 1974 and his sister, Mary Margaret Dillon in 1996.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Burns officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Margaret Jones
EGGLESTON — Margaret Helen Jones, 77, of Eggleston, died Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.
Born in Covington December 19, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Albert C. and Myrtle Robinson Myers.
For over 40 years, she worked as a silk finisher at the dry cleaners, attended Calvary Baptist Church in Elyria, Ohio, loved reading her Bible and praying for her children and grandchildren and considered her greatest accomplishment raising children, was TOPS Queen for a year and her favorite time was when all her family came home for Christmas and Easter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Paul Jones, two sisters, Alma Mae Jones, Dorothy Albright; three brothers, Wilber, Carl and Alvin Myers and a cherished friend, Bill Carbaugh.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory three daughters, Sharon Jones and fiancé Roger Shaver of Eggleston, Joyce and Tim Dellisanti of Elyria, Ohio, Vicki and Bryan Sebastian of Grafton, Ohio; four sons, Donald and Bonnie Grimes of Covington, Paul and Dennis Jones of Sheffield Village, Ohio, David Harold and Joanne Jones of North Olmsted, Ohio, Gerald Wayne and Rachelle Jones of Sheffield Village, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Betty, Barbara and Jenny Myers; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St., Pembroke, with the Rev. Wilber Wagner officiating.
Interment will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg.

George Lewis
UNION, W.Va. — George Elmer Lewis, 69, of Sweet Springs, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, follow a short illness.
He was born in Virginia May 18, 1935, a son of the late Carl Edward and Ellen Howard Lewis.
Mr. Lewis was a retired employee for Security Storage at Arlington and was a member of the National Rifle Association and the AARP.
He was preceded in deth by a son, Perry Allen Lewis and a sister, Anna Klassen.
Surviving is a son, George Michael Lewis of Ashtabula, Ohio; three sisters, Wanda Whitlock of Kent, Ohio, Debbie Crislip of Gap Mills and Phyllis Faudree of Sweet Springs; five grandchildren, Michelle, Phyllis, Angel, Mark and Jessica; one great-granddaughter, Shannon; and 13 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Groves Funeral Home Chapel in Union with the Rev. Mark Smearman officiating.
Burial will follow at the Carmel cemetery, Gap Mills.

Bill Mays
Mr. William Ryland “Bill” Mays, age 75, of Moneta, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 in Fort Myers, Fla. He was the husband of Eunice Wilhelm Mays.
Mr. Mays was born March 22, 1930 in Alleghany County, the son of the late Harry Alexander Mays, Sr. and Nora Keyser Mays.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Edgemont Associate Reform Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ed Nicholson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dan Gillette.
Interment will follow at Cedar Hill cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Betty Culotta
MILLBORO — Betty Wyatt Culotta, 73, of Route 1, Wild Cat School Road, Millboro, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at her residence.
She was born Sept.18, 1931, in Newport News.
Betty graduated from Clifton Forge High School in 1949 and went on to attend Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and obtained a master’s degree from the University of Maryland. Betty began her career as a teacher in 1953 in Montgomery County, Md. Her successes in the classroom lead to an appointment as school librarian. When she began her work as school librarian, she was one of 12 librarians in the county. When she retired in 1983, she supervised 300 librarians in Montgomery County. During her 30-year career, Betty served as president of the Montgomery County Education Association and as chairwoman of the legislative committee for the Maryland State Teachers Association.
Betty retired in 1983 to Bath County to the home she and her parents loved in Millboro. During retirement, Betty enjoyed a rich and busy life as what she liked to call a "professional volunteer." She worked with the local food pantry, delivered "Meals on Wheels," and participated in the Bath County Historical Society. Betty enjoyed fund raising activities for Garth Newel Music Center. She was a member and docent volunteer for the Bath County Art Association. She joined the Millboro Ruritan Club and served as vice president and president. Having been active with the Bath unit of the American Cancer Society since 1985, serving as vice president and president, Betty enjoyed adapting the ACS signature fund raising event,"Relay for Life," to Bath County in 1997.
In retirement, Betty retained her lifelong enthusiasm for library work and education. She served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Rockbridge Regional Library. She helped form the Rockbridge Regional Library Foundation as a fund raising arm for endowment and innovation. In 1993, she was named as "Outstanding Trustee in the Commonwealth" by the Virginia Library Association. She was elected to the Bath County School Board and served with distinction as chairwoman and vice chairwoman from 1992 to 1995.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Gwaltney Ranson, in 1984, and her father, Emmett Ranson, in 1990, and by other loving relatives and friends.
She is survived by her nieces, Betty (& Paul) Herbert of Charlotte, N.C. and Cathy Carter of Newport News and by her dedicated friends Frank and Ella Rexrode of Warm Springs,as well as many other relatives and friends.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Betty’s memory to the American Cancer Society, the Bath County Public Library or the Millboro Ruritan Scholarship Fund.
A private interment is planned at Windy Cove cemetery in Millboro with family only attending. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Spencer Barber Jr.
Spencer R. Barber, Jr., age 76, of 111 E. Hawthorne Street, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. He was the husband of Cornelia “Connie” Barber.
Mr. Barber was born May 7, 1928 in Covington, the son of Spencer Barber, Sr. and Mary Cardwell Barber.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Thomas S. Simmons Jr. officiating. Interment will br in Cedar Hill cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by Curtis A. Smith Post 1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
