James E. Carr
IVOR — James Earl Carr, 44, died Oct. 8, 2008.
Born in Suffolk on July 26, 1964, he was the son of the late Willie and Dorothy Stover Carr.
Survivors include his special friend, Janet Leah Jones; a son, Morgan Earl Carr; two brothers, Robert “Shortie” Earl Carr, Willie “Butch” Carr.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Purviance Chapel in Wakefield with the Rev. Billy Garner officiating.
Burial will follow immediately after the service in Ivor cemetery.

Gracie P. Britt
AHOSKIE, N.C. — Gracie P. Britt, 87, a native of Nansemond County, died Oct. 6, 2008, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Britt was a member of Holy Prayer Room Church in Rich Square.
Survivors include her husband, William Britt of Ahoskie; four sons, Clifton, Bruce and Ernest, all of Murfreesboro, N.C. and Kendred Britt of Rich Square, N.C.; five daughters, Florence Delancy of Beaumont, Texas, Barbara Johnson and Mildred Hastings, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Darlene Sanford of Franklin and Bernice Brown of Como, N.C.; two brothers, Nathan Parker of Murfreesboro and Delaware Parker of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Vivian Hargrove of Washington, N.C.; and 26 grandchildren.A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Prayer Room Church, Rich Square.
Burial will be in Carver Park cemetery.

Dorothy J. Boyette
WINDSOR — Dorothy Louise Joyner Boyette, 86, a lifelong resident of Windsor, died Oct. 8, 2008.
A member of Windsor Baptist Church, she was a homemaker and worked for the Virginia Dept. of Transportation as a clerk.
Mrs. Boyette was born Nov. 22, 1921, in Isle of Wight County.
She was the daughter of the late Leonidas “Lonnie” Harrison and Mary Elizabeth Holland Joyner.
She was also predeceased by her husband of 61 years, David Albert Boyette and her brother, Woodrow H. Joyner.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn B. and Stanley M. Jones of Hanover, Shirley B. and John F. Rudin of Chesterfield, David Leon and Mary Charlotte Boyette of Windsor; three grandchildren, Michael R. and Jennifer Batteau of Fort Myers, Fla., Elizabeth A. Morris of Chesterfield and Bryan L. Boyette of Windsor; sisters-in-law, Clara Boyette Butler of Franklin and Virginia R. Joyner of Peachtree City, Ga.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bryan Brooks officiating.
Burial will follow in the Windsor cemetery.
Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of David and Mary Charlotte Boyette.

Anise N. Williams
HENRICO — Anise Newsome Williams, 87, died Oct. 3, 2008.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph R. and Annie M. Newsome, formerly of Branchville, and her brother, Joseph R. Newsome Jr.
She was an entrepreneur and a woman before her time. She taught her family many lessons — the greatest of all, survival.
She is remembered by all who even met her. She was a lifelong member of Eastern Star Chapter Branch Spencer No. 11.
Survivors include her daughter, Gwendolyn B. Steinbrecher and husband Robert; son, Grover G. Barnett Jr. and wife Sharon; grandchildren, Shelia Steinbrechen, Terese Steinbrechen, James Basnett and Kenneth Barnett; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Nurney of Capron, Josie Gay of Seaboard, N.C. and Erma Scott of Boykins; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday in Boykins Baptist Church, Boykins, Va., with interment at Beechwood cemetery in Boykins.
Mary N. Powell
IVOR — Mary Nannie Powell, 88, at Consulate Healthcare in Windsor.
Born May 4, 1920 in Ivor, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Lizzie Felts Powell.
She was also predeceased by a brother, George C. Powell, Jr.
She was a lifetime member of Ivor United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Ivor Woman’s Club. She worked at Bracey and Johnson Oil Company (Ivor Oil Company) for 32 years and she worked 11 years at the State Agriculture Lab in Ivor.
She was a 1937 graduate of Ivor High School and a 1939 graduate of Norfolk Business School.
Survivors include two nieces, Ruth P. Saunders and husband, Billy of Carrsville, Virginia P. Britt and husband Russell of Ivor; a nephew, George C. Powell III and wife Donna of Waverly; four greatnieces, Christy F. Lynch of Suffolk, Nancy F. Scott of Rockmart, Ga., JoAnne F. Joyner of Zuni, Cheryl F. Simmers of Waverly; three great-nephews, John W. Saunders of Carrsville, Ricky Powell and Michael Powell, both of Wakefield; five great-great-nieces, Hillarie J. Garner of Ivor, Janice H. Vann of Cedartown, Ga., Ashley Saunders of Franklin, Lillie Powell and Dacey Carwile, both of Wakefield; five great-great-nephews, Matt Saunders of Carrsvile, Nick Powell and Davis Carwile, both of Wakefield, Justin Harrup of Courtland and Josh D. Harrup of Sedley; two great- great-great-nephews, Hayden T. Vann of Cedartown and Peyton T. Garner, of Ivor and numerous cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Purviance Chapel, Wakefield, with the Revs. Anne Beale and Roy Drake officiating.
Burial will immediately follow in Ivor cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the residence of Russell and Virginia Britt, 10118 New Rd. in Ivor.

COFIELD, N.C. — Margaret Williams Manley, died Oct. 6, 2008 at Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake.
Mrs. Manley was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Wintess.
Survivors include one son, Robert Manley of Chesapeake; one brother, Raiford Williams of Franklin; one sister, Sarah Boone of Salisbury, Md.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, Ahoskie.
Burial will be in the Eure family cemetery, Gates, N.C.

Andrew Peele
MURFREESBORO, N.C. — Andrew Peele Sr., 70, a native of Hertford County, died Oct. 5, 2008, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Marion F. Peele of Murfreesboro; one son, Andrew Peele Jr. of Murfreesboro; one daughter, Iris Peele of Murfreesboro; two brothers, James Peele and Joe Peele, both of Murfreesboro; four sisters, Blanch Mae Lassiter, Geneva Peele, Jeanette Eley and Catherien Gatling, all of Murfreesboro; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Revelle Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Elisha Barnes.

Elsie O. Hines
NORFOLK — Elsie O. “Tattie” Hines of the 400 block of W. 34th St., died Oct. 3, 2008, at Sentara Leigh Hospital.
She was born Jan. 17, 1917, in Sebrell.
She was a member of Norfolk United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir.
Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral was held Tuesday in Norfolk United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Dr. Sherry Daniels officiated.
Interment was in Forest Lawn cemetery, Norfolk.
Melissa A. Gillum
WINDSOR — Melissa Ann Gillum, 28, a special angel of God, who touched many lives and brought them laughter, smiles and happiness, was taken by our Lord on Oct. 2, 2008.
She is now spreading her joy and happiness in heaven with our Lord God.
She was born in Portsmouth.
Survivors include her mother, Robyn M. Fury and mother’s boyfriend, Norwood “Daddy Norwood” Asbell of Windsor; father, Bruce D. Gilllum and wife Michelle of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters, Dawn Marie Gillum and boyfriend Fernando Dirtion of Suffolk, Christina Lynn Gillum and fiancé Tommy Asbell of Ivor; half brothers, Tulley Gillum and Jack Gillum, both of Cleveland; grandmothers, Patricia C. Favero of Virginia Beach and Phyllis Gentry of Cincinnati, Ohio; niece, Neviah Dirtion, nephew, Thomas Asbell, aunts and uncles, Terry and Randall Young of Norfolk and Mary Daniels of Orlando, Fla.; cousins, Eddie and Heather LaTona of Medina, Ohio; and many other cousins and adopted family.
Her last unselfish act on this earth was to be a Life Net donor.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Basil Ballard.
Helen P. Ellis
WINDSOR — Helen Presson Ellis, 78, died Oct. 5, 2008, at Sentara Obici Hospital.
Mrs. Ellis was the daughter of the late Stella and Emerson Presson.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert Earl Ellis Sr. and a grandson William T. Ellis Jr. and was an active member of Colosse Baptist Church.
Survivors include her two daughters, Sandra Edwards and husband Steve of Carrsville and Betty Anne Crabtree and husband Gene of Windsor; two sons Robert Earl Ellis Jr. and wife Robin of Franklin and William T. Ellis and wife Pam of Carrsville; a sister, Mary Ellen Joyner of Kennewick Wash.; brother, James E. Presson of Carrsville; eight grandchildren, Shannon Whitley, Amy Claypoole, Robert Drew Claypoole, LeAnne Crabtree, Madison Ellis, Amanda Ellis, Meredith Ellis, and Melinda Anne Ellis; and three great grandchildren, Tyler Whitley, Hunter Whitley, and Zuri Claypoole.
A funeral service was held Tuesday in Colosse Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Webb with burial following in the church cemetery.
