Julian Owen Mays
Julian Owen Mays, 84, of Amherst, died Sunday, November 28, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth Clark Mays for fifty-four years.
Born February 7, 1920 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Morris Taylor and Essie Johnson Mays. He was a retired engineer clerk with the Virginia Department of Transportation, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the V.F.W. and the Battle of the Bulge Veterans. Mr. Mays was a lifetime member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one step-son, John W. Neal and two brothers, Troy Mays and Taylor Mays.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Mays is survived by two daughters, June M. Eden and her husband, Roger of Forest and Judy M. Hunter and her husband, Terry of Madison Heights; one step-son, T.W. Neal and his wife, Betsy of Charleston, SC; one sister, Martha M. Harvey of Lynchburg; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Mays of Amherst; eight grandchildren, Paul Eden, David Eden, Brandon Eden, Jenny Hunter, Dr. John Neal, Laurin Hogan, Alana Stulen, and Michelle Barnett; thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m.Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Mt. Pleasant U.M. Church by the Rev. Murray Sallinger, the Rev. Arnold Bradley, and Dr. John Neal. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 30, 2004 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of his daughter, Judy, 177 Nottingham Place, Madison Heights.

Jessica K. Coleman
Jessica K. Coleman, of Baltimore Maryland, passed away suddenly, Tuesday, July 13, 2004, after being hit by a car, she was six years old.
Born May 5, 1998, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was a loving daughter of Paul and Tracey Coleman, loving sister of Abigail, godchild of Lamont Edwards and Linda Grimms, loving granddaughter of Fran and Jesse Coleman, Mike and Gloria Butcher, loving niece of Anne Coleman, Dennis and Stacy Butcher, Peggy Sue Hipple, Jeff Burks, Glenn Whiteman, Karen Crisifuli and Al Marsh. Also surviving are many cousins and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Foster-Coleman Family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence of Jesse and Fran Coleman.

Joan Louise Norberg
Joan Louise Norberg of Madison Heights died Sunday, November 7, 2004 in the Lovingston Health Care Center.
Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of Madeline McLane Norberg of Madison Heights and the late Leonard Erick Norberg. She was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother, Joan is survived by three sisters, Phyllis N. Burnley and her husband, Robert of Monroe, Peggy N. Thompson and her husband, Bob of Fayetteville, NC, and Linda N. Collins of Lynchburg; two brothers, L. Erick Norberg and his wife, Mary Ellen and Jerry W. Norberg and his wife, Vicki, both also of Lynchburg; seven nieces; four nephews, and thirteen great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2004 at Amelon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Arthur Wolz, Jr.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of Joan’s mother, 114 Stumps Hill Road, Madison Heights.

Linwood Eugene Gibson
Linwood Eugene Gibson, 33, of Amherst, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006.
Born November 12, 1972, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Ernest Hampton Gibson and is survived by his mother, Barbara Maddox Gibson, of Amherst. He was employed at Thurston Wheeler Logging for 7 years where he worked as a skidder operator.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiancée, Patty Ouellette, of Amherst, his sister, Norma Campbell and her husband, William, of Amherst; nephews, Zachary and William Campbell, Nicholas Spencer and Jacob Ouellette; nieces, Amanda Arnold, Hannah Arnold, Catherine Blackburn, and Faith Ouellette; Patty’s parents, Larry and Edna Ouellette, of Boonsboro, a host of other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2006, at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Carl Martin, Jr. and the Rev. Dave Peters. Interment will take place in Amherst cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Gibson, 928 Campbell’s Mill Rd., in Amherst.

Kathy Parr McCraw
Kathy Parr McCraw, 60, of Charlottesville, passed away Sat., Oct. 21, 2006 at her residence. She is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Samuel P. McCraw.
Born Sept. 1, 1946 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Preston F. Parr and the late Mary Cash Parr. Kathy was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church, Lowesville. A graduate of Lynchburg College in 1968, she taught public school for several years, then worked for the US Postal Service. In her later years, Kathy enjoyed drawing and painting still life and landscapes in watercolors. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Kathy is survived by: one sister Mary Ann Almond of Appomattox; her mother-in-law, Minnie C. McCraw of Lynchburg; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wed., Oct, 25, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, Lynchburg, by the Rev. John Campbell and the Rev. Wes Williams.

Doris Hunt Phillips Harris
Doris Hunt Phillips Harris, 93, of Madison Heights, passed away July 15, 2004, at Hospice of the Hills in Lynchburg.
Born May 16, 1911, in Coleman Falls, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas Hunt and Mary Arthur Hunt. Mrs. Harris was a member of the Madison Heights Christian Church and was retired from Craddock Terry after 40 years of service. Mrs. Harris was also a member of the Quarter Century Club.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was also preceded in death by her first husband, Adrian Earl Phillips as well as her second husband, James Lloyd Harris, nine brothers and sisters; Agnes Rhodes, Ethel Mitchell, Ida Tyree, Slyvia Watson, Marion Hill, William Hunt, Marvin Hunt, Ernest Hunt and Charles Hunt as well as two grandchildren; Michael Hines and George Tsoleas.
Survivors include three children, Lynwood E. Phillips and his wife Zandra of Madison Heights, Barbara Hines and her husband Eugene of Morganton, NC and Mary Lou Tsoleas of Bedford, two step children; Ronnie Harris and his wife Carolyn and Michael Harris and his wife Mary Lou, five grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, one great- great grandchild, other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July19, 2004, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Reverend Paul Land officiating and Reverend Jack Hamilton assisting. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Sterling B. Cofer, Sr.
Sterling B. Cofer, Sr., 77, of Forest, died Saturday November 6, 2004, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Mabel L. Cofer for 56 years.
Born June 6, 1927 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Cary Picton Cofer, Sr. and the late Kathryn Shafer Cofer, also, a brother, Cary P. Cofer, Jr. and a sister, Ruth C. Wood, preceded him in death.
Mr. Cofer was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from Allen-Morrison Sign Company after 48 years of service; he was a 50 year member of the Forest Masonic Lodge, AF & AM., and a devoted member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee and member of the Administrative Council of the Church.
In addition to his wife Mabel, he is survived by a son, Sterling B. Cofer, Jr. of Norfolk; two sisters, Christine C. Padgett and Mildred C. Arthur, both of Lynchburg; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Y. Cofer of Lynchburg; and his godson, Gregory K. Wilson of Forest.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 9, 2004 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Merkle and Dr. Wayne Wiley officiating, assisting with services will Dr. Pat Simon and the Rev. Eugene Condrey. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park with Masonic rites by the Forest Lodge.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence.

Ronnie Lee Cassada, Jr., 44, of Madison Heights, passed away Monday, March 6, 2006 at his home.
Born October 22, 1961, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Robert Lee Marshall and Edna Drinkard Marshall. He attended Solid Rock Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include four children, Amy Lynn Campbell, of Madison Heights, Jessie Adam Cassada, Crystal Michelle Cassada and Lisa Renee Cassada, all of Hendersonville, NC; a brother, John Marvin Cassada of Madison Heights and a sister, Debra C. White of Concord; two grandchildren, Chase and Caden Wood, a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2006 at Springhill cemetery by the Rev. Ray Triplett.

Thelma Hudson Berryman
Thelma Hudson Berryman “Ladybug”, 81, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at Lynchburg Health and Rehab. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thaxton Berryman.
Born September 11, 1925, in Madison Heights, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Florrie Hudson. Mrs. Berryman was a member of Madison Heights Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harry L. Hudson, Sr. and Archie F. Hudson, Sr.
Survivors include a son, Wayne Berryman and wife, Darlene, of Lynchburg and a daughter, Elizabeth Gay Hatcher, of Port St. Lucie, FL; two sisters, Louise H. Duff and Beulah H. Martin and husband, Lincoln, both of Madison Heights, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Timothy Madison. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Hessie Craig Skinnell
Hessie Craig Skinnell, 97, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, July 10, 1004 at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation. She was the wife of the late Floyd Fulton “Buck” Skinnell.
Born October 22, 1906 in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late Pascal Henry and Nellie Dooley Craig. She was retired form Consolidated Textile Corp. and was a member of College Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth S. Callahan; one son, Ralph Skinnell, and two sisters, Beverly C. Hall and Rose Brewer.
Mrs. Skinnell is survived by three grandchildren, Carolyn Holofchak and her husband, Dennis, Becky Harvey and her husband, Marty, and Robert W. Callahan of Lynchburg; three great-grandchildren, R. Dean Callahan, Matthew Holofchak, and Kendra Harvey and one great-great-grandchild, Alexson Williams.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

Ruby Moseley Fielder, 80, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday November 2, 2004 following a long illness. She was the widow of Samuel Henry Fielder.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday November 6, 2004 at Epworth United Methodist Church, on Route 122, past Moneta, in Franklin County, with Pastor Carl Perez officiating.

Elizabeth Coleman Brizendine
Elizabeth Coleman Brizendine, 84, of Monroe, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Sheffie Daniel Brizendine.
Born August 19, 1921 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Wiley Newton and Ola Wingfield Coleman. Mrs. Brizendine was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Westview Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Wiley, and Willie Coleman.
Mrs. Brizendine is survived by two sons, Sheffie Lewis Brizendine and his fiance’, Lorene Carney of Lynchburg; Harold Alfred Brizendine and his wife, Heidi of Amherst; two daughters, Mary B. Martin and her husband, Mike of Monroe and Janet B. Hailey and her husband, Mark of Forest; four brothers, Virgil Coleman and his wife, Margie and Alfred Coleman and his wife, Rebecca, both of Monroe, Curtis Coleman and Thomas Coleman and his wife, Joyce, both of Madison Heights and one sister, Christine Hutcheson and her husband, Marion of Greensboro.
She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mattie Brizendine of Lynchburg and Cabell Brizendine of Madison Heights; one brother-in-law, Buford Eanes of Danville, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 6, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. John Ragland and the Rev. Don Stine. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

Cynthia Ware Myers, 47, of Evington, died Thursday, October 11, 2006 at her residence. She was the wife of Dale A. Myers of Madison Heights.
Born August 30, 1959 in Alexandria, she was a daughter of Joyce Johnson Allgood and her husband, Marshall of Madison Heights and the late George William Ware, Sr. Cynthia was an office clerk with the Commonwealth of Virginia and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and mother, Cynthia is survived by four daughters, Kristin Brown, Patricia Mays, Carolyn Mays, and Victoria Myers; two brothers, Charles Ware, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Cheltenham, MD and Charles Ware, Jr. and his wife, Tina of Chesapeake Beach, MD; two sisters, Judith Holt and her husband, Charles, also of Chesapeake Beach, MD and Dianne Minter and her husband, Clyde of Madison Heights.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 14, 2006 at Temple Baptist Church by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.
