Woodrow Wilson “Wick” Meredith

Woodrow Wilson “Wick” Meredith, 88, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday October 30, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Born August 19, 1918 in Louisa County, he was a son of the late Lewis Elish and Annie Laura Coffey Meredith.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty eight years Kathleen “Kitty” Burley Meredith, a son, Woodrow W. “Rhody” Meredith, Jr., and his wife Janet, a loving granddaughter, Blaire Leigh Meredith, a sister, Charlotte Harlow and her husband Clifton, a special sister in-law, Roberta M. Burley, and many in-laws, nephews, and nieces.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, and three sisters.

Wick was an active member of Moose Lodge # 715, where he received their highest degree of Pilgrim. He served as governor, past governor and for many years as secretary. Wick was a veteran of WWII, serving five and one half years for the honor of his country. He was always proud of the service he provided. He was a longtime member of Euclid Christian Church and friend of Sardis United Methodist Church in Amherst, where he attended regularly. Wick touched the lives of many of the youth in the Lynchburg area. He coached youth baseball for over twenty years and served as an assistant scout master for Troup 1, Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years. He loved the outdoors, sports, and working with young people.

A celebration of Wicks life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Sardis United Methodist Church by Dr. Edward Parrish, III, Dr. Wayne L. Meredith, and the Rev. Jack Bartee. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence.

Ira Hewitt Oliver

Ira Hewitt Oliver, 81, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Pennix Oliver, who survives.

Born November 12, 1921 in Altavista, he was the son of the late Richard Henry Oliver and the late Aurora Hough Oliver. He was a member of Chapel Grove Baptist Church, Evington, and had served in the US Army during WWII.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: six step-children; Jesse Horsley, Odell Beam, Charlie Horsley, Mildred Jackson, Roger Horsley and Donald Horsley, eight step-grandchildren, four step great grandchildren including a special step great granddaughter; Quntasia Horsley, three sisters-in-law; Gracie Evans, Anna Pennix and Laura Swain and very close friends; Carolyn Hearl and Percy Coles, Jr.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at Chapel Grove Baptist Church, Evington, by the Reverend Russell Lee.

The family will receive friends and family at the residence 1401 Grace Street, Lynchburg.

Wayne Douglas Peterson

Wayne Douglas Peterson, 47, formerly of Lynchburg, died Sunday July 25, 2004 at the V.A. Medical Center, Salem.

Born April 24, 1957 in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of the late Roy Vernon Peterson, Sr. and the late Ernestine Burnette Peterson, also a sister, Joanne Carwile preceded him in death.

Wayne was a retired U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by a brother, Roy V. Peterson, Jr. of Lynchburg; two sisters, Judith P. Wright of Bedford and Linda Fay Rosario of Chicago; seven nieces and nephews, Ray Eidenour, Michael Wright, Lisa Rosario, Angie Wright, Ricky Oakley, Josh Wright and Jamie Carwile; and three great-nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday July 30, 2004 at Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, by the Rev. J. Mike Dodson. Burial will follow in the Dunn Family cemetery on Sunburst Road, with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at 1630 Blackburn Street.

Albert Thaxton White

Albert Thaxton White, 80, of Madison Heights, passed away Thursday, November 18, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife, Frances Abbott White of 33 years.

Born March 12, 1924 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Wilson L. White, Sr. and Dolly Stevens White. Mr. White was a WW II Veteran having served in the Army and was stationed in North Africa, Europe and Italy and received the Purple Heart. He was a life member of the VFW post 8184 and was a past Post Commander. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, where he served as Sunday School Director for 22 years. He served as Deacon for many years and was on the board of Trustees. He retired from C.B. Fleet after 28 years of service.

In addition to his parents, Mr. White was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Fulcher White and two brothers; Wilson L. White, Jr. of Madison Heights and Clarence White of Lovingston and a sister, Beatrice Mattos of Baltimore, MD.

Also surviving are two brothers; Wheeler W. White of Madison Heights and Linwood E. White, Sr. and wife Dot of Amherst, one step-son, Marvin Hilton and wife Ginny of Charlottesville, three step-grandchildren; Mark Hilton of Seattle, WA and Mexico, Timi Conrath and husband Rick of Lovettsville and Anne Matthews and husband Michael of Free Union, four step-great grandsons; Hunter and Parker Conrath and Shane and Ethan Matthews, a very special nephew, Lindy White, a special niece, June Thacker and many other devoted nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A funeral Service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Lynchburg 11th and Court St. by the Reverend Robert Brubaker and the Reverend Ty Campbell assisting. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the First Baptist Church Budget Fund.

Ann Sylvest Carson

Ann Sylvest Carson, 84, of Lynchburg, passed away, Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

Born December 8, 1921 in Jackson, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Alvin Leo Sylvest and the late Elizabeth Dyess Sylvest. Mrs. Carson served with the US Army Nurse Corp. during WWII and was a retired registered nurse from Ft. Belvoir Army Hospital.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Moorin of Lynchburg and Sandy Burke and husband Walter of Ranson, WV; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother, Alvin L. Sylvest, Jr., of Lakeside, Montana; and a very special niece, Geri Ann Boyd of Prescott, AZ.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 17, 2006 at Presbyterian cemetery by the Rev. David Heerspink.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pat Robertson, in care of The Christian Broadcasting Network, 977 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach, VA 23463.

Mildred Mae Cyrus Shoemaker

Mildred Mae Cyrus Shoemaker, 75, passed away Monday, October 30, 2006 at her home in Amherst with her loving family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Floyd Shoemaker.

Born January 22, 1931, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Adolphus and Rena Staton Cyrus. She was also preceded in death by three brothers; Albert, Edward and Carlton Cyrus as well as three sisters; Fannie Wade, Joyce Wall and Shirley Cash.

Mrs. Shoemaker was a member of Bible Baptist Church and her one great love, after her husband, Willie, was bingo.

Survivors include six children, Richard Shoemaker and wife, Norma of Amherst, Ann Shelton and husband, Charles of Rustburg, Albert Lewis Shoemaker and wife, Susan of Lynchburg, Betty Robbins and husband, Ronnie, Willie “Roy” Shoemaker, and Sandra Robbins and husband, Joel, all of Madison Heights; two brothers, Clifton Cyrus and wife. Lorene of Amherst and Rudolph Cyrus of Amherst; a sister, Phyllis Lischer and husband, Manfred of Amherst and a loving and devoted granddaughter, Linda Gail Haggard, 23 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Paul Land. Interment will take place n Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Shoemaker.

The family would like to thank the nurse at Centra Health Hospice, and a special thank you to Maxine Washington, for the care and compassion shown to Mrs. Shoemaker.

Alvin Randall "Randy" Reynolds

Alvin Randall "Randy" Reynolds, 40, of Monroe, died Monday, May 19, 2003 at his residence. He was the husband of Susie Reynolds.

Born in Lynchburg, October 3, 1962, he was a son of Alvin Reynolds of Madison Heights and the late Betty Coleman Reynolds. Randy was a sales representative with H.T. Hackney and was a member of Fairview Christian Church.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by one son, Randall Kyle Reynolds and one daughter Janie Nicole Reynolds both of Monroe, one brother, Ralph Reynolds of Lynchburg; two sisters, Darlene Mitchell of Bedford and Gloria Jean Tyree of Forest; his father-in-law, Raymond Floyd of Monroe; his step-mother, Annie F. Reynolds of Madison Heights and one step-sister, Sue Ferguson of Madison Heights.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday from Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the Cheatham Family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 2724 West Perch Road.

Juanita Alsbrooks Elders

Juanita Alsbrooks Elders, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004 at her residence. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles M. Elders, Jr.

Born June 23, 1926 in Sumter Co., SC, she was the daughter of the late David Alsbrooks and the late Bessie Geddings Alsbrooks. Mrs. Elders was a longtime member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and was employed there as a switchboard operator since 1973.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael W. Elders; two sisters; and four brothers.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by, a son, Charles M. Elders, III and wife Terry of Auburn, AL; two daughters, Charlene E. Nicks and husband Ben and Cynthia G. Stephens both of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Anthony Elders of Opelika, AL, Wayne Elders of Franklin and Joy and Rebecca Nicks both of Lynchburg; two great grandchildren, Ian and Nathaniel Elders both of Opelika, AL; a brother, Alfred Allsbrooks and wife Gladys of Sumter, SC; and a sister, Katie McDuffie and husband Belton also of Sumter, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Thomas Road Baptist Church by Dr. Jerry Falwell and Dr. Melvin H. Campbell. Interment will follow in Presbyterian cemetery, Grace St., Lynchburg.

Family visitation will be from 7 – 8:30 p.m., today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Clayton N. Tomlin

Clayton N. Tomlin, 66, beloved Papa and Father, was carried by Angels to be in the presents of his Lord and Savior, Wednesday July 28, 2004.

Born August 13, 1937 in Monroe, Va., he was a son of the late Banks W. Tomlin and the late Ora Martin Tomlin.

Mr. Tomlin was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, the retired owner/ operator of Tomlin Electrical & Repair Corp., a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, and the American Legion Post 16.

He is survived by the mother of their children, Evelyn Sheffey Tomlin; four children, Clayton Neil Tomlin, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Huddleston, Alan Craig Tomlin and his wife Kathy of Lynchburg, Terry T. Lease of Forest, and Tammy T. Rogers and her husband Ronnie of Lynchburg; two sisters, Carol Childers and Thelma Finch both of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren, Alan Craig Tomlin, Jr., Clayton Neil Tomlin, III, Jacob Montgomery Lease, Kayla Marie Lease, Kelly Jo Tomlin, Ronnie William Rogers, III, Christopher Jordan Tomlin, Samuel Kovey Rogers and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by Dr. Jerry Falwell and the Rev. Ed Gomes. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by the American Legion Post 16.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at Evelyn’s home, 1657 Rainbow Forest Drive.

Agnes Blankenship Arthur

Agnes Blankenship Arthur, 95, of Evington, passed away Wednesday November 17, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Hewitt "Jack" Arthur.

Born February 11, 1909 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas "Jack" Blankenship and the late Nannie Little Blankenship.

In addition, she was preceded in death by four sons, John H. "Peter" Arthur, Jr., William T. "Bill" Arthur, Samuel A. Arthur, and Charles Franklin Arthur; three brothers, John O. Blankenship, Bill Blankenship, and Thad Blankenship; two sisters, Dorothy B. Johnson and Rosa B. Wright.

Mrs. Arthur attended New London Academy; she enjoyed farming her entire life, selling produce at the Lynchburg Market for over 50 years; she loved reading and flower gardening, along with being an avid cook, she especially enjoyed preparing Sunday dinner for her family; she joined Salem United Methodist Church in 1926, and was a member of the Sunshine Club at Salem U.M. Church.

She is survived by a son, M. Joseph Arthur of Evington; a brother, Lloyd S. Blankenship of Lynchburg; three sisters, Virginia B. Walker and Alice B. Towler of Evington and Alma B. Stilley of Tampa, FL.; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2004 at Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Schooler officiating.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 11:30 a.m. Saturday until service time, in the Fellowship Hall of Salem U.M. Church, and at other times at her son's home, 4917 Colonial Highway, Evington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur Family cemetery Fund or Salem U.M. Church.

Helen Staton Watson

Helen Staton Watson, 76, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, October 29, 2006 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Arnold Brown Watson. Born March 9, 1930 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Lacy Loving Staton and the late Vernie Sligh Staton. Mrs. Watson retired as a L.P.N. and was a private sitter for a number of years; she was a member of Calvery Cross Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Russell S. Watson and wife, Anita of Forest; her brother, Russell Staton of Gibsonville, NC; her beloved grandson, Taylor Stephen Watson of Forest; a number of cousins, including her devoted cousin, Doris Hale and many extended family members. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2006, at Spring Hill cemetery, with the Rev. Jack L. Brooks officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road.

Carrington Edward Gowen, Sr.

Carrington Edward Gowen, Sr., 78, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 in Avante' of Lynchburg. Twice married , he was the husband of the late Irene Williams Gowen and the late Shirley M. Gowen.

Born January 1, 1925 in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Henry and Edna Gowen. He was a retired warehouse manager at Craddock & Terry Shoe Corp. and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by three children, Tommy Wayne, Johnny, and Linda and one grandson, Justin Michael.

Mr. Gowen is survived by one son, Carrington E. Gowen, Jr. of Lynchburg; one daughter, Carol G. Johnson and her husband, J.C. of Rustburg; two sisters, Louise Taylor of Richmond and Estelle Tatum of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Debbie, Lori, Jason, and Whitney and one great-grandson, Jeremy.

A graveside service with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2003 in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Wayne Lanham.

The family will receive friends from 7- 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and other times at the home of his daughter, Carol, 17 Crestview Drive, Rustburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society or a charity of choice.
