Minnie Daniel Vassar
Minnie Daniel Vassar, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord Tuesday November 16, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital, following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilton Presley Vassar, Sr. her son, Phillip G. Vassar, Sr., three brothers, Basil D. Daniel, Arthur H. Daniel and Robert A."Joe" Daniel; four sisters, Lena D. Garrett, Virginia D. Weigand, Helen D. Walker, and Florine D. Godsey.
Born March 14, 1921, in Rustburg, she was a daughter of the late Robert Abrial Daniel, Sr. and Elama Driskill Daniel.
Mrs. Vassar attended Grace Baptist Church of Madison Heights.
She is survived by two sons, James E. Vassar, Sr. and wife Rosemary and Hilton P. Vassar, Jr. and wife Jo Ruth, of Concord; two daughters, Sandra Vassar – Morcom and Helen S. Gravely of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, James E. Vassar, Jr., Phil G. Vassar, Jr., Traci Toney, Terri Howell, Douglas W. Johns, Jr., Tammy Hicks, Terry L. Gravely, Jr., Julie Gravely, and Dawn Klitzka; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters, Nellie D. Skinner, Mazie D. Bass, and Elsie D. Morris; a devoted sister-in-law, Edith Goodman; a special daughter-in-law, Diane B. Vassar; a special son-in-law, Terry L. Gravely, Sr. and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday November 18 2004, at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery, with the Rev. Mitch Luckie officiating.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence of her daughter Sandra, 1110 Highland Drive, Lynchburg.

Gray A. Clark
Gray A. Clark, 83, of Madison Heights, passed away, Sunday, March 12, 2006. On May 8, 1963, she married
the love of her life, William L. Clark, who preceded her in death.
Born February 4, 1923 in Staunton, VA, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Colson Argenbright and the late Ada Gray Argenbright. Gray was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. After her husband’s retirement from I.B.M., they moved back to their Virginia southern roots from upstate New York. She enjoyed the outdoors, sports, animals and the arts.
She is survived by three children: Chris Keeler and wife Sharon of Windsor, NY, Jeffrey L. Clark and wife Kelly Anderson Clark of Madison Heights, VA, and Pamela Jean Clark of Newport News, VA; five grandchildren: Michael, Jacob and Sean Clark, Nicole Woody and Lauren Tucker; her nephew, William "Buzz" Collingwood and wife Maureen of Maine, NY and their children and grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Ann McManious of Binghamton, NY and her children and grandchildren. She is also missed by her very special neighbors and friends Joyce Sellick and her daughters, Faye and Kaye, and their families, and by the congregation of Monroe Church of God.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 16, 2006 at Briarwood Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Roy S. Newcomb.
Family visitation will be Wednesday, from 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

James Franklin "Jim" Wilson, Jr.
James Franklin "Jim" Wilson, Jr., 79, of Lynchburg, died Monday, October 30, 2006, following a short illness.
He was the husband of Mae Bryan Wilson.
Born April 22, 1927 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late James F. Wilson, Sr. and the late Lillian Miller Wilson; a daughter, Elaine Carwile, two brothers and one sister also preceded him in death.
Mr. Wilson was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during W.W.II; he retired from Winebarger Furniture Co. and was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife Mae, he is survived by a daughter, Selma Flores; a son, James F. Wilson, III; five sisters, Vernie Beahm, Carrie Hendricks, Lydia Parker, Helen Dudley, and Mary Bryan; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 2, 2006, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Pastor Larry Brodie officiating.
Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today, at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

William Edward Mason, Sr.
William Edward Mason, Sr., 75, of Madison Heights, died Monday, July 5, 2004 at his home. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Brown Mason and the late Eva Odell Meador.
Born April 8, 1929 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Robert Percy and Mae Elizabeth Schmid Mason. He was a retired service man with Sears with thirty-eight years of service, operated a small engine repair business at his home, and had a garage on Elon Road for twenty years and was well known as “Bill the Repairman”. Mr. Mason was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Eternal Baptist Church, Madison Heights.
In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William E. Mason, Jr.; two brothers, Robert C. Mason and Shirley Lee Mason; three sisters, Dorothy Powell, Frances Smith, and Elizabeth Coleman and his grandmother, Minnie G. Schmid, who raised him.
Mr. Mason is survived by two sons, Robert C. Mason of Crewe and Thomas Lee Mason of Evington; two sisters, Margaret G. Hartless of Amherst, Mildred Mays of Madison Heights; two brothers, James A. Mason of Forest and Sherman E. Mason of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Christopher, Kaitlin, and Terri; a number of step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004 in Mt. Tabor cemetery, Agricola by the Rev. Dennis Wade, Pastor of Eternal Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
Herbert Hoover Burks
Herbert Hoover Burks, 76, of Bedford, went to Heaven on Sunday, January 9, 2005 departing from Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was the loving husband of Amy Fifer Burks for 56 years.
Hoover was born November 5, 1928 at the family home place in Naloa, in Amherst County. He was a son of the late George Houston Burks and Georgie Myrtle Davies Burks.
Hoover was a skilled construction superintendent with J.E. Jamerson Construction Co., of Appomattox, VA for many years before he retired. He and his wife also owned and operated Blue Grass Market and Restaurant of Naola, VA.
He enjoyed working and selling merchandise at various fleamarkets along the east coast. Hoover loved Blue Grass music, and was an accomplished mandolin, guitar, fiddle, and banjo player. He was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Montvale, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Roger, Calvin, Lawrence, George and Hollie Burks and four sisters, Lucy Brooks, Jane Grant, Pearl Sorrells, and Nannie Thompson.
In addition to his wife Amy, those left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Janet Ross and her husband, the Rev. E. Larry Ross of Bedford and Valerie Albritton and her husband, Ken of Ashville, NC; a brother, Talmadge Burks of Fredericksburg; a sister, Edna Byers of Bedford; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren and many friends.
We will celebrate his homegoing on Wednesday January 12, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with visiting for family and friends one hour prior to services, and at other times at the residence, 608 3ed. Street, Apt. # A-11, Bedford, VA.

Melvin Luther Wood
Melvin Luther Wood, 81, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Smith Wood.
Born November 8, 1924 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Jake Carl Wood and the late Mary Ruth Webber Wood. He served his country 37 years with the U.S. Army during WWII, the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Defense Force. He was also a member of Park View United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jake Carl Wood, Jr.; and by a sister, Louise Doty.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wood is survived by two daughters, Diane W. Kirkwood and her husband, Robert and Carolyn Wood, both of Forest; one sister, Frances W. Godsey of Lynchburg; two grandsons, Steve Kirkwood and his wife, Jenae of Columbia, MO and Scott Kirkwood and his wife, Kelly of Lynchburg; two great-granddaughters, Abbey Kirkwood and Izzie Kirkwood; one brother-in-law, Winfrey Smith and wife Carolyn of Lynchburg; a close family friend, Robyn Ramsey of Forest; special caregivers, Jean Garnette and Terri Cabell-Carr; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. C. Douglas Pillow. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Andrew Jackson Mason
Andrew Jackson Mason, 87, of Evington, passed away Weds., Oct. 10, 2006 at Autumn Care in Altavista. For over 50 years, he was the husband of the late Irene Mason Mason, who passed away in 1999.
Born July 1, 1919 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Johnnie Franklin Mason and the late Lethia Maddox Mason. He retired from Allen Morrison Sign Co., and enjoyed faming in later years.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Mason was preceded in death by five brothers, Warren, Albert, William, Ed and Howard Mason; and by two sisters, Martha Layne and Alice Myers.
He is survived by: three sisters, Kathleen Noel and husband Preston of Evington, Phyllis Rowles of Lynchburg and Lillie Perrow of Rustburg; and one special sister-in-law, Clara Crouch of Lynch Station.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Fri., Oct. 13, 2006 at Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles E. Schooler. Interment, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16, will follow in the Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 p.m., today, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Frank Hubert Cofflin, Sr.
Frank Hubert Cofflin, Sr., 85, of 120 Stayman Lane, Madison Heights, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Martha Moore Cofflin.
Born January 1, 1919 in Campbell County, he was the son of the late John Washington and Ida Pugh Cofflin. He was a retired clerk with Virginia Markets with forty years of service, a member of American Legion Post 16, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Cofflin was a member of Chestnut Hill U.M. Church.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Cofflin is survived by one son, Frank H. Cofflin, Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Lynchburg; one sister, Irene C. Hadden of Miami, FL; four grandchildren, Lisa C. Gunter and her husband, Chris of Rustburg, Jennifer C. Lee and her husband, Eric of Evington, Bridget Shaw and her husband, Gary and David Creasy, all of Madison Heights and four great-grandchildren, Nathan Gunter, Adam Lee, Danielle Camire, and Heather Camire.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church by Pastor David Wade. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Margaret Layne Taylor
Margaret Layne Taylor, 82, of Lynchburg died Saturday, January 1, 2005 after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late James Keith Taylor.
Born in Pittsylvania County, January 6, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Walter Edward and Addie Crews Layne. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a dedicated member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
One grandson, Brian Wilson; five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma Jean Peterson and her husband Jeffery of Lynchburg and Vivian T. Wilson and her husband Calvin of Greensboro, NC; two sons, James E. Taylor and his wife Maryanne and Douglas W. Taylor and his wife Angela all of Lynchburg; one brother, Cable G. Layne of Salem; 12 grandchildren, James S. Taylor, Marie Smith, Allison L. Taylor, Jamie C. Taylor, Keith Gale, Michelle Hedges, Jessica Hedges, Masten Taylor, Stacy Wilson, Julie Peterson, Amber Taylor and Justin Peterson and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday from West Lynchburg Baptist Church with Dr. Michael A. Cox and the Rev. James D. Newman officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Mamie Tyree Mitchell
Mamie Tyree Mitchell, 76, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Jack Nelson Mitchell.
Born October 5, 1929, in Gladstone, she was a daughter of the late Willie Fitch Tyree and Mary Frances Olivia Tyree. She was a member of Eternal Baptist Church and was a retired nursing assistant, having worked for Garrett's Nursing Home.
She was also preceded in death by two children, Virginia Mitchell and James Cunningham, a sister, Virgie Poe and three brothers, Joe Tyree, Charlie Tyree, and Frank Tyree.
Survivors include four children, Marjorie Newton, of Richmond, Richard Porter, of Macon, GA, Betty Wade, of Lynchburg, and Michael Mitchell, of Madison Heights; seven sisters, Nettie Davis, Nellie Henson, Mary Pleasants, Evelyn Arthur, Lottie Linkous, Cora Hermanson, and Ethel Wooldridge; four brothers, Boyd Tyree, Jessie Tyree, Herman Tyree, and William Tyree, 20 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday February 26, 2006, at Evans Family cemetery, by the Rev. Ronnie Freeman.
