Reva Witt Watson

Reva Witt Watson, 60, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Lynchburg passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Myrtle Beach Manor in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Born August 28, 1941 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Witt and Tressie Hawkins Witt. She was employed at Crestar Bank in Lynchburg for many years.

Mrs. Watson is survived by: her husband; Kelly W. Watson of Myrtle Beach, SC, a son; Michael Watson and wife Chris of Ridgeway, VA, two sisters; Loretta Woodford and husband William of Lynchburg and June Smith and husband William of Abingdon, VA, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Reverend John R. Thompson, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc., P.O. Box 823, Lynchburg, VA 24502.

Louise Dunn Tolley

The Lord took Louise Dunn Tolley, 88, in his arms on January 15, 2003 and carried her quietly to her heavenly home. She was the daughter of the late Ollie and William Dunn of Lynchburg.

She was a lifelong member of Lynchburg Seventh Day Adventists Church, where she was active as a Sabbath School Teacher for many years. She will always be remembered by the many children she taught and loved so much.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her children, Lois Marie Tolley, Della Tolley Moore, Loretta Tolley Duff and Charles Tolley.

Leaving to morn her passing is her beloved sister, Margaret D. Routon; her daughter, Kathleen T. Reynolds; her daughter-in-law, Mary Tolley; her son-in-law, Charles C. Duff; her grandchildren, Judy D. Frey, Cynthia D. Wood, Charles C. Duff, II, Cristel T. Tolley, C. Douglas Tolley, Melanie T. Petticofer, Shannon Tolley and many loved great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Louise touched so many lives with her happy spirit and her great love for children. We were all so lucky to have known her.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel, with visitation from noon until service time on Saturday. Interment will be in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family respectfully ask that all contributions in her memory be made to the Lynchburg Seventh Day Adventists Church, 19 George Street, Lynchburg, VA, 24502.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Medical Care Center for the excellent care given to Louise during her residence there.

Peter Dean Vos

Peter Dean Vos, 40, of 173 West Briar Place, Madison Heights, died Friday, December 26, 2003 at his home. He was the husband of Ann Harshbarger Vos.

Born December 16, 1963 in San Diego, California, he was the son of Dr. Kenneth Vos of Houston, TX and the late Irene Marskamp Vos. He was a retired employee of the Central Virginia Training Center and a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his daughter, Rachel Christine Vos; one sister, Julie Yonker and her husband, Jeff of Cincinnati, Ohio; his step-mother, Dr. Claude-Marie Vos of Houston, TX, his grandmother, Henrietta VanderHeuvel of Pella, Iowa and two nieces, Cassie and Callae Yonker.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2003 Temple Baptist Church by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr.

A reception will be held following the service at the church.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to consider Temple Christian School.

Virginia Schmickl

Virginia Schmickl, 92, of Valley View Retirement Center, went to be with the Lord, whom she loved and faithfully served, on Sunday, March 28, 2004. Psalm 116:15, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” She is reunited with her dear husband, Frank Schmickl.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, daughter of Emma K.Tiarks and Arnold M. Tiarks, she was a homemaker, executive secretary, Bible teacher, faithful wife, and mother. Alongside her husband, she actively served in rescue missions in Chicago, the Auxiliary of the Gideons International, and the visitation ministry for Thomas Road Baptist Church. She was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church and more recently attended Heritage United Methodist Church.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Sandy Matthes and her husband Jake, grandson, Phillip Matthes and his wife Pam, granddaughter, Becky Hopkins and her husband Kevin, and six great-grandchildren, Mandi, Anna, and Benjamin Matthes, Stephanie, Stephen, and Melanie Hopkins, as well as her many friends.

A service of Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Heritage United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Stephen Hundley, with interment in Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gideons International or Heritage United Methodist Church.

Earl Glenn Baber

Earl Glenn Baber, 85, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Agnes Driscoll Baber.

Born in Appomattox Co., February 14, 1919, he was a son of the late James William and Bertha Adcock Baber. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation after 30 years of service and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Patricia A. Cash and Debbie B. Wheeler and her husband Brian all of Lynchburg and Mary Helen Scott and her husband David of Yorktown; one son, Danny S. Baber of Robbins, GA; seven sisters, Helen Bates, Catherine Brown and Thelma Campbell all of Lynchburg, Bertha Stoker of Winnemucca, NV, Hazel Hummel of Franklin Park, IL, Mabel Dowdy of Cheraw, S.C. and Doris Witt of Evington; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Two sons, E. Glenn Baber, Jr. and Ronald S. Adams; four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday from Whitten Park Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Robert Wilson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence.

Richard Dwayne Peters

Richard Dwayne Peters, 54 of Amherst, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 11, 2005. He was a loving husband and a truly devoted father and grandfather and will be missed greatly by everyone who knew him.

Born May 24, 1950 in Lynchburg, he was a son of Ralph E. Peters, Jr. and Frances Dinkins Peters. Mr. Peters had served in the United States Army Veteran and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe where he had been a Sunday School Teacher as well as the Social Activities Coordinator. He was a former member of the Lions Club and had been a Junior Achievement Counselor for over five years. Mr. Peters was a co-founder of I.C.E.S., Industrial Controls and Engineering Services and retired as an Electrical Engineer.

He is survived by his wife Judy Wright Peters, a son, Shawn Aric Peters and his wife Amy of Madison Heights and a daughter, Kristy P. Landon and husband Derrick R. Landon of Amherst, mother-in-law, Katherine E. Wright, three grandchildren, Kayla, Alexa and River Landon, three sisters, Sandra Cross of Amherst, Rhonda Hand of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, and Wanda Slack of Tampa, FL, a brother, Ryland R. Peters, Sr. and wife Gladys of Amherst, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Glynn Coleman. Interment will take place in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from7-8:30 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2005 at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Mrs. Peters.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider the American Lung Association or the Amherst Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.

Claude Colin Wade, Sr.

Claude Colin Wade, Sr., 88, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Apr. 23, 2005, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Kathleen Suddith Wade.

Born in Lynchburg, Aug. 24, 1916, he was the son of the late John James Wade and Manie Lee Wade. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers; John Wade and George Wade, three sisters; Mary W. Smith, Ruth W. Webster and Lucy Wade, and two devoted nephews; Malvin Smith and Dale Webster.

Claude was a member of Fairview Christian Church and a retired employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe Corp. after 50 years of service where he was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Normandy invasion, central Europe and the Rhineland.

He is survived by one daughter, Wanda L. Wade of Lynchburg; two sons, Claude "Bud" Wade, Jr. and his wife, Edith of Lynchburg and William "Bill" Wade and his wife, Carolyn of Stuarts Draft; a special grandson, Brandon Eric Leonard; four other grandsons, Brian Wade, Mark Francis, Nicholas Wade and Rodney Wade; one great grandchild, and a devoted niece, Joy Webster of Madison Heights.

A graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Marvin Busie and the Rev. Jack Hamilton on Tuesday, Apr. 26, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, Apr. 25, 2005 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Rd.

Jean S. Steppe

Jean S. Steppe, 72, formerly of Lynchburg, died Thurs., March 16, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late James Ralph Steppe who dies in 1977.

Born May 30, 1933 in Washington Co., she was the daughter of the late Alex Shelley and the late Beulah West Shelley. Mrs. Steppe was a retired from the Courtland Manufacturing Co.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, a grandson and by two brothers.

She is survived by three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; her sister, Frances Moses of Lynchburg; and by her brother, Billy Shelley of MD.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2006 at Concord cemetery by the Rev. Carlton Dunn and Mark Snowden.

Bessie Sligh Stump

Bessie Sligh Stump, 74, of Appomattox, died Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was the wife of the late Eldridge Dewey Stump, Sr.

Born July 23, 1932 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Sligh and Mary Tyree “Frances” Sligh Layne; also preceding her in death were a son, Eldridge D. Stump, Jr. a daughter, Shirley Coles Hawkins, a sister, Woodsie Sligh, and two brothers, Robert and J.C. Sligh.

Mrs. Stump retired from Wilburn’s Super Market in Appomattox and was a member of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet S. Doss and her husband Douglas of Appomattox, and Kathy S. Treaster and her husband Gary of Chesterfield; a brother, J. Esley Sligh of Seminole, FL; three sisters, Lois Reeves of Appomattox, Barbara Shaffer of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Mary L. Moore of Evington; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two expectant great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 6, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the Rev. Robert " Dink" Phillips.

Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park, Forest.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at her daughter Janet's home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.

The family would like to send special thanks to Dr. Guthrow, Dr. Vandyke, and the staff of Lynchburg General Hospital for their excellent care and to her extended family at Babcock Manor.

Lois Bragg Carter

Lois Bragg Carter, 91, of Lynchburg, died Friday, May 16, 2003 in Autumn Care of Altavista.

Born September 18, 1911 in Lynch Station, she was the daughter of the late William Alexander and Lola Agnew Bragg. She was a retired Private Nurse with Westminster-Canterbury. Mrs. Carter was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Roy C. Carter of Stoneville, NC.

Mrs. Carter is survived by one son, C. W. "Billy" Carter and his wife, Jewel of Altavista; two daughters, Florene C. Andrews of Fredericksburg and Marie Carter Frey and her husband, Don of Albemarle, NC; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Hallie Burns Eagle

Hallie Burns Eagle, 82, of Lynchburg died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Wallace C. Eagle.

Born in Campbell County, June 1, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Hallie Morton Burns and Sallie Jones Burns. She was for many years the owner and operator of Eagle’s Grocery and was a charter member of Perkins Park Christian Church.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Ruth Jones Burns; one daughter, Mitzi Gaye Eagle, one sister, Virginia Burns Doss, one brother, Dave Burns and one grandson, Paul Michael Eagle.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Eagle Shelton and her husband Melvin of Lynchburg and Teresa Ann Shrader of the Outer Banks, NC; one son and a very special daughter in law, Larry W. and Deborah K. Eagle of Centreville; two grandsons, Chris A. Eagle and Wade E. Shrader; five granddaughters, Kelly E. Brooks, Karen S. Gunter, Susan S. Clark, Kimberly D. Eagle and Meaghan L. Shrader; two special nieces, Maxine Doss Dean and Doris D. Robertson and 10 great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Fort Hill Memorial Park by Chaplin Donnie Glass.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter, Nancy Shelton.
