Linda Rice “Tillie” Cooke

Linda Rice “Tillie” Cooke, 63, of Monroe, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was the beloved wife of Joseph Levi Cooke.

Born in March 19, 1943 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Beverley James Rice, Sr. and the late Girlie Ray Norvell Simpson. Also preceding her in death was a sister, Emily Geraldine DeMent. “Tillie” retired from C.V.T.C. and for a number of years continued working at Century Food Mart.

She attended Grace Church of God. Along with being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, “Tillie” devoted her entire life to helping others, no matter how bad she was feeling or any other problems she may have been dealing with, she was always taking care of someone else. She was a kind, simple woman, who loved Sheets coffee, scratch lottery tickets, the outdoors, flowers of all kinds and especially daffodils. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Crawford Adams and Regina of Bedford, Thomas Lee Adams and Patricia Kay of Monroe, Emily Kay Harkins and Brian Christopher of Cape May Courthouse, NJ; brothers, Beverley James Rice, Jr., Melvin Lee Rice and Lana; a sister, Brenda Kay Stark and John, all of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Matthew James Adams, Samantha Jo Adams, Thomas Wayne Adams, Joseph McClinton Adams, Olivia Rae Harkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, with Pastor Bill Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and following services Wednesday the home of a niece, Rebecca Hammock, 305 Paul Revere Drive, Forest.

Whitten Park Ave. Chapel & Cremation Service is assisting the family with services.

Eleanor Ewers Woodson

Eleanor Ewers Woodson, 71, of 131 Worley Drive, Madison Heights, died Friday, February 7, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was the wife of William Martin Woodson, Jr. Born August 20, 1931 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late John Bibb and Edna Smith Ewers. Mrs. Woodson was retired from Wachovia Bank and was a member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Landon Frank Humphrey; her second husband, Richard E. Lee; one brother, John Ewers and one sister, Myrtle Bryant.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Woodson is survived by four children, Susan Humphrey Bailey of Madison Heights, Landon Bibb Humphrey and his wife, Deborah of Maryville, TN, Mark Edward Humphrey and his wife, Brenda of Madison Heights and Sharon Humphrey Panzarino and her husband, Andy also of Madison Heights; her step-children, Tommy Lee and his wife, Judy of Richmond, Sharyn Coffey and her husband, Terry, and Duane Lee and his wife, Angie, all of Madison Heights, Donny Woodson and his wife, Christine of Jacksonville, FL, William M. Woodson, III and his wife, Jerry, Jerry D. Woodson and his wife, Carolyn, and Betty W. Bryant and her husband, Lee, all of Amherst.

Mrs. Woodson is also survived by three sisters, Edna Earl Bomar of Lynchburg, Marie Torrence and Doris Lee, both of Madison Heights; two brothers, J.P. Ewers and Donald Ewers, also of Madison Heights; six grandchildren, Abbey Bailey, Maggey Bailey, Kristin Humphrey, Trevor Humphrey, Cole Panzarino, and Logan Lee and one great-grandchild, Camen Bailey.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Madison Heights Baptist Church by Dr. Timothy Madison.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the residence.

Robert Edward Jennings

Robert Edward Jennings, 80, of Madison Heights, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 in Fairmont Crossing Health & Rehabilitation Center, Amherst, He was the husband of Evelyn Brown Jennings for fifty-three years.

Born August 15, 1922 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Emmett Samuel and Laura Floyd Jennings. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation and a U.S. Army veteran. While serving during World War II, Mr. Jennings was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Theodore Jennings, Kinkle Jennings, Shelton Jennings, Percy Jennings, Thomas Jennings, Clarence Jennings, and Lewis Jennings and three sisters, Eunice Floyd, Edith Nichols, and Nevie Hudson

In addition to his wife, Mr. Jennings is survived by one sister, Evelyn Duff and her husband, L.D. of Madison Heights; two sisters-in-law, Viola Bryant Jennings and Viola M. Jennings, both of Amherst and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Rev. L. Grant Carter, III. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7- 8 p.m. today at the funeral home

Marjorie Godsey Campbell

Marjorie Godsey Campbell, 83, of Lynchburg died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Robert Julian Campbell for 62 years.

She was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Mary B. Godsey. She is survived by her children, Donna Bise, Don Campbell, Wayne Campbell and wife, Pat, and Robert Campbell and wife, Janine; four sisters, Katherine Cashmore, Louise Wright, Edith Trent and Hallie Roope. She is also survived by 10 beloved grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased in death by one sister, Elizabeth, and four brothers, James, Herschel, Harold and Bill.

Marjorie was an active member of the Madison Heights Baptist Church for more than 70 years.

The family will receive friends and relatives today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel between 7 and 8 p.m. and other times at the home, 212 Morgan St., Lynchburg.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel followed by grave-side at Fort Hill Memorial Park, with Dr. Timothy Madison officiating.

Donald Hall

Donald Hall, 69, of Madison Heights, passed away, January 1, 2004. Mr. Hall was a retired stone mason, having worked for Humphrey’s Rock and Marble Shop.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Effie Johns Hall; his father, William Hall and wife Thelma Hall; three sons, Keith Hall, Newport News, Kevin Hall, of Richmond, Tim Hall and wife Donna, of Scottsville, and Laura H. Leak, of Charlottesville; two step-sons, Matthew Johns and wife Christina, of Providence Forge and Nathan Spencer; 14 brothers and sisters, Dorothy Staples, of Fancy Gap, William Hall, of Ruckersville, Lorena McCain, of Charlottesville, William Hall, of Texas, Howard Hall, of Culpeper, Gene Hall, of Culpeper, Linda, Becky, Nancy, and Patty Hall, Jerry Hall, of NC, William James, Sandra and Ellen; eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, January, 4, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with Reverend Ronnie Freeman and Reverend Rudy Ramsey officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the funeral, and at other times at the residence. Interment will be in St. Paul’s cemetery.

Louise "Lou" King

Louise "Lou" King, 84, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004. Born November 5, 1919 in Salisbury NC, she was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph W. King.

Mrs. King was a member of Amherst Baptist Church and attended Monroe United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Smith and her husband Willy of Amherst; stepdaughter, Gail Purvis of Bridgewater; stepson, Joseph Wilson King II and his wife Diane of Amherst; sister, Betsy Wiley of Charlottesville four step-grandchildren, one step-great grandchild, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004 from Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment will follow in Amherst cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald Lee “Donnie” Driskill

Donald Lee “Donnie” Driskill, 54, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday August 4, 2004. Born July 18, 1950, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Carl Thomas and Lillie Mitchell Driskill.

Donnie was a widely renowned horse trainer and equestrian. His love for horses was well known and he was a respected riding instructor and showman. He was a member of the American Saddle Horse and the Virginia Arabian Horse Associations. He was a certified mediator for the Peaceful Alternatives Community Mediation Center and a member of Eucluid Christian Church. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

Survivors include one brother, Ronald Thomas Driskill and his wife Wadeene of Rustburg, one nephew, Tom Driskill and his wife Lori of Lynchburg, one niece, Caryn Newcom and her husband Scot of Aiken, SC, two great nieces; Haley Driskill of Lynchburg and Lily Newcom of Aiken and one great nephew, Corey Driskill of Lynchburg.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 9, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Reverend Edward Parrish III, officiating. A private ceremony to scatter Mr. Driskill ashes will be held at later date.

The family will receive friends Sunday, August 8, 2004 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mr. Ronald Driskill.

Brenda Neely Collier

Brenda Neely Collier, 63 of Naola, peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior on November 13, 2006, after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Born July 26, 1943, in Big Stone Gap, she was a daughter of the late Lena Neely Carter.

She was blessed with many wonderful and dearly devoted friends from her church, Cornerstone Baptist Church in Naola, where she taught Sunday school, as well as her community and her former employer, Ericsson in Lynchburg.

Survivors include a son, Fred F. Collier, Jr. and his devoted friend, Linda Matthews, of Lynchburg and a daughter, Debra C. Wyland and her husband, Wendell and their son, Benjamin H. Wyland, of Madison Heights; her former husband, Fred F. Collier, Sr., who remained a devoted friend and provided much comfort in her final days, other relatives and many friends also survive her.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Briarwood Memorial Gardens, by Pastor Brian Ferrell.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel and at other times at the residence of Mrs. Wyland.

William H. “Bill” Dowdy, Jr.

William H. “Bill” Dowdy, Jr., 59, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Lynchburg Health & Rehab. Center.

Born January 14, 1944, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late William H. Dowdy, Sr. and the late Arlene Virginia Bell Dowdy. Mr. Dowdy had retired from B. & W., he was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, a lover of blue grass music and Jeff Gordon Fan.

Bill is survived by: his wife of 41 years; Brenda Wooldridge Dowdy of Lynchburg, two sons; William Todd Dowdy and wife Kimberly and Robert Allan Dowdy and wife Shirley both of Lynchburg, four grandchildren; Justin, Jessica, Melanie and Tristan Dowdy, a step-mother Belle F. Dowdy of Lynchburg, two sisters; Betty Neff and husband Earl of Lynchburg and Carolyn Denson and husband Rawlings of Franklinton, NC, three nephews; Stephen Neff and R. L. and Barry Denson and a special friend; Regina K. Dowdy of Lynchburg.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy, Jr. and the Reverend David N. Smeltz. Interment will follow in Beulah Baptist Church cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Bill’s sister Betty Neff at 110 Smith Road, Forest.

Joan "Lois" Wood Bell

Joan "Lois" Wood Bell, 66, of Madison Heights, died Saturday May 24, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Edward Lee Bell who died January of 2001.

Born May 31, 1936 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Carson and Marie Campbell Wood. Mrs. Bell was a member of Temple Baptist Church of Madison Heights. She is survived by her son, Edward C. Bell and wife Jennifer of Monroe; her daughter, Glenda B. Proffitt and husband Robert of Madison Heights; one brother, James C. "J.C." Wood of Lynchburg; and six grandchildren, Heather Elliott, Kyle Proffitt, Kelsey May, Zachary May, Hannah Bell and Cassidy Bell.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday May 27, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, by the Rev. J.D. Surbaugh. Burial will follow in Presbyterian cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at her daughter Glenda's home, 290 Laurel Drive, Madison Heights.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Monelison Rescue Squad, or the American Heart Association.

Martha Tomlin Exum

Martha Tomlin Exum, departed this life, Wednesday December 31, 2003 at her home.

Born September 15, 1938 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Howard Scott Tomlin and the late Mary Tomlin Tomlin. Martha was a member of Eastbrook Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Scott Exum, two brothers and three sisters.

Martha is survived by her husband of 47 years, Perry J. Exum; one daughter, Wanda Lee Exum Rhyne and her husband Robert L. Rhyne, Jr. of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Robert L. Rhyne, III and Hannah Lee-Ellen Rhyne; one sister, Darnelle Bryant; two brothers, Bernard H.Tomlin and Elwood Tomlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday January 5, 2004 at the Eastbrook Baptist Church, by the Rev. Charlie Spencer. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the home of her daughter Wanda, 6 Creekview Lane, Lynchburg.
