Loretta Vina Snipes Dirzuweit
Loretta Vina Snipes Dirzuweit, 74, of 497 Amelon Road, Madison Heights, died Monday, March 10, 2003 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Beverly Dirzuweit.
Loretta was born June 30, 1928 in Morehead, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Malcolm Snipes and Mary Cole Snipes. She was a retired registered nurse associated with Olsten Nursing Staff and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Snipe.
She is survived by family including her two sisters, Lorene Rickman of Amherst and Evelyn Gills of Chestertown, MD and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Harlan Cooke. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Theresa Ann Eckert Skoldal
Theresa Ann Eckert Skoldal, 79, of Lynchburg, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at her residence. She was the beloved wife of Harold Skoldal for 55 years.
Born in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Palle Eckert. She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis G. Skoldal and one daughter, Judith Ann Skoldal.
Theresa was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and a beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her husband she is survived by one son, Harold Skoldal, III, of Lynchburg, one sister, Mary Murray of New Jersey one granddaughter, Jessica Mays, 4 nieces, Theresa Mocsulak of Auburn, PA, Deborah Campbell of Freehold, N.J., Patricia Berke and Rosemarie Csanitz, both of Colonia, N.J. and a special friend, Judi Jones of South Plainfield, N.J.
A Mass of Resurrection will be said at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 11 A.M. Monday, June 16, 2003, by Father James Dorson. Reception to follow in the church hall. A private interment will follow later.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. tonight, Sunday, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Hazel Layne
Hazel Layne, 99, of Lynchburg, passed away, Sunday, January 18, 2004. She was retired from Westover Pharmacy.
Born July 10, 1904, she was a daughter of the late Clifton and Alice Duncan Layne. A sister, Catherine Phillips Nuckles Layne, also preceded her in death. She was a very loving and giving person who put others before herself, and will be greatly missed by her family, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 21, 2004, at Springhill cemetery, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004 and at other times at the residence. Charles W. Hollon
Charles W. Hollon, 76, of Madison Heights, passed away, Sunday, August 22, 2004.
He was the husband of E. Ellen Hollon.
Born August 7, 1928, in Breathitt, KY, he was a son of the late Elijah Dennis Hollon and Nell Florence Cardwell Hollon.
Mr. Hollon was a United States Army Veteran having served in the Korean War. He was a professional millwright and owner/operator of his own business through the years and worked in security at the Glad Plant after his retirement until 2002. Mr. Hollon was also a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynchburg. Also preceding him in death was a nephew, Kenneth Eugene Hollon.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hollon was survived by four children; David Hollon of Lynchburg and his children; Ashley Nicole, Anthony D. and Matthew C. Hollon, Deborah Louise Hollon of Madison Heights, Mike Hollon and Mark Hollon, two step children; Sharon M. Olson and husband James of Montross, VA and Gary Oliphant and wife Johanna of CA, three brothers; Gene Hollon (Laurel County Sherriff) of London, KY, Elijah Hollon, Jr. (Chief of Police) of London and Jerry Hollon, many other grandchildren, two great grandchildren, other relatives and numerous friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2004 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynchburg, by the Reverend James L. Armentrout.
The family will receive friends following services at the Church Thursday evening.

Calvin Kemper Thacker
Calvin Kemper Thacker, 56, of 159 Izaak Walton Road, Amherst, died Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Duke University Hospital. He was the husband of Sheila McCue Thacker for 33 years.
Born August 28, 1948 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Ed and Kitty Thacker.
Calvin loved hunting and fishing, and was well known for his talent of restoring vintage and antique automobiles. He was always there to lend a hand or help anyone who needed him and will always be remembered for the love he had for his daughter, his “baby girl”, Vicki.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Pete Thacker
In addition to his wife and daughter, survivors include two brothers, Charles Thacker “Chuck” Thacker, of FL and Mike Thacker of GA, two sisters, Vann Atwater and husband, Henry of CO and Sue Tate and husband, Lemmie also of GA, two very special friends, Billy Amiss and Connie Guthrie.
A memorial service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Pastor Carlton Duck.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence.

Barbara C. Massie
Barbara C. Massie, 68, of Madison Heights, passed away Monday March 10, 2003 at her residence. She was the wife of Robert D. "Denver" Massie.
Born in Lynchburg, February 15, 1935, she was a daughter of Leighton W. "Sonny" Wingfield of Lynchburg and the late Hilda Rogers Wingfield, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Leslie L. Wingfield.
Mrs. Massie retired from C.& P. Telephone Company after 35 years service, and was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by her son, Robert W. Massie of Goode, and his fiancee' Renee Williams; daughter, Pamela C. Mays and her husband Irie "Dizzy" Mays of Appomattox; sisters, Judy W. Gallagher and her husband Gene Gallagher of Forest, Linda W. Presley and her husband Richard Presley of Lynchburg, and Deborah W. Meeks and her husband H. L. Meeks of Forest; brothers, William P. "Bill" Wingfield of Lynchburg and Steven W. Wingfield of Evington; grandsons, Joshua W. Mays of Lynchburg and Zachery C. Mays of Appomattox; and her special shopping friend, Joanne Wallace of Monroe.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m.Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, by the Rev. L. Grant Carter, III., pastor of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends following services Thursday at the chapel and at other times at the residence.

Margaret Nash Lawrence
Margaret Nash Lawrence, 81, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Avante of Lynchburg. She was the widow of Seebert Steele Lawrence.
Born in Campbell Co., she was the daughter of the late Harry Thomas Nash and Heath Tweedy Nash. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances N. Williamson and Annie N. Cheatham.
Margaret was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and retired sales clerk for the J.C. Penney Co. after 30 years of service. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She is survived by 3 sons, W. Ray Williamson and his wife, Glassell, of Covesville, Ronald B. Williamson and his wife, Carol and Gene T. Williamson and his wife, Marlene, both of Lynchburg, one daughter, Mary Walker Williamson of Lynchburg, a step daughter, Sue Worley of Lynchburg, one brother, Harold T. Nash and his wife, Jean of Appomattox, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 P.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Anderson Duck.
Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Sherman Leroy “Jack” Campbell
Sherman Leroy “Jack” Campbell, 69, of Lowesville, died Saturday, January 17, 2004 at his residence.
Born February 20, 1934 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late James Robinson and Estelle Johnson Campbell. Jack was a retired heavy equipment operator with Best Grading Company.
“Jack” is survived by three sons, Larry W. Campbell and his wife, Rhonda of Evington, James S. Campbell and his wife, Patricia of Virginia Beach, and Jerry W. Campbell and his wife, Kim of Lynchburg; one daughter, Sharon A. Lippard and her husband, Stephen of Buena Vista; two brothers, Thurman Campbell of Amherst and John Campbell of Natural Bridge; five sisters, Maggie Campbell and Dorothy Cash, both of Amherst, Janie Mae Hedrick of Lynchburg, Gladys Judd of Waynesboro, and Betty Jo Coffey of Natural Bridge; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and his former wife, Edith C. Puryear of Gladstone.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2004. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Robert Putt. Interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.

Marie O. Haslam
Marie O. Haslam, 91, of Lynchburg, died Sunday August 22, 2004 following a long illness. She was the wife of W. Robert Haslam of Lynchburg.
Born August 21, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York, she was a daughter of the late George Gabriel and Mary Malwitz Gabriel; in addition, a step-daughter,
Arlene Ewert, a sister, Evaline Jensen, and a brother, George Gabriel pre- ceded her in death.
Mrs. Haslam was a retired teacher with the New York City School System and a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Nancy Rice of Charlottesville, and Marylou Ridley and her husband Frank of Solon, ME., a step-daughter, Gayle Daly and her husband Michael of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday August 26, 2004 at Olivet Presbyterian Church, Charlottesville, with the Rev. Albert Connette officiating. A reception will be held for family and friends following services at the church.

Cora Mae Viar Martin Crist
Cora Mae Viar Martin Crist, 80, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, March 7, 2003 at her residence.
Born November 13, 1922 in Madsion Heights, she was the daughter of the late William Warren Viar, and the late Odell Newcomb Viar Franklin.
Mrs. Crist was preceded in death by: her husband John Thomas Crist, a son; Roy Thomas “Tim” Martin, Jr. and by a brother; Warren Viar.
She is survived by: three daughters; Gloria Proehl and husband Frank and Martha “Dinky” Deel both of Lynchburg and Sandra Martin and husband Terry of Cobb Co., GA, two sisters; Josephine Shrader and Ola Brumfield both of Madison Heights, eleven grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2003 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow in the Viar Family cemetery, Madison Heights.
Family visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home and at other time at the family home at 108 Adams Dr., Lynchburg.
Josie Falls Chilton
Josie Falls Chilton, 90, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2003 at her residence.
Born July 2, 1912 in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Falls and the late Olive Blanche Campbell Falls. Mrs. Chilton was retired from Lynchburg Manufacturing Co., and was a member of Euclid Christian Church and the Christian Woman’s Fellowship Circle No. 2.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: two sisters; Fleta F. Pillow and Edna F. Panck and by four brothers; Norvell C. Falls, Randolph O. Falls, Garnett R. Falls and Hawthorne F. Falls.
She is survived by: her daughter, Deborah C. Martin and husband Roy E. “Bud” Martin, Jr. and her grandson; Roy E. “Trey” Martin, III all of Forest, her sister; Thelma Falls Bradley of Vesuvius and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Spring Hill cemetery by the Reverend Edward Parrish, III.
The family will receive friends from 7 - 9 p.m. today at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the home of her daughter at 701 Lake Vista Dr., Forest.
