Talmadge Raymond Coffey

Talmadge Raymond Coffey, 84, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Crist Coffey.

Born in Amherst County, August 11, 1918, he was a son of the late Talmadge Ivy and Mary Lawhorne Coffey. He was retired from Advance Auto Parts. .Mr. Coffey was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during World War II and participated in the D-Day Normandy Invasion. He was a charter member of the Madison Heights Ruritan Club and was a member of Madison Heights Christian Church. He was also a lay minister for over 21 years and served the Mountain Top Christian Church in Love, Va. and Beach Grove Christian Church in Roseland.

In addition to his wife, one daughter, Patsy Coffey Smith and her husband, Gilbert, of Madison Heights; four grandchildren, Gregory Scott Smith, David Brian Smith, Steven Michael Smith and Lynette Smith Jones and her husband, Geoffrey, survive him. He was also a loving and attentive "Papa" to his seven great-grandchildren, Clayton Scott Smith, Samantha Marie Smith, Mackenzie Rae Smith, Cameron Blake Smith, Natalie Brooke Jones, Jillian Elizabeth Jones and Naomi Clair Jones; and a special part of the family, Chase Arron Davis.

Two brothers, Francis Ivy Coffey and John Daniel (J.D.) Coffey preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, from Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Land, the Rev. D. Jack Hamilton, and the Rev. Joe Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by American Legion Post 16.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the residence

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Monelison Rescue Squad or the Madison Heights Christian Church.

Cheryl Burks Day

Cheryl Burks Day, 59, of Big Island, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003 at her residence.

Born May 20, 1944 in Big Island, she was the daughter of the late Halford Burks and Alma Powell Burks of Big Island, who survives. Cheryl was a longtime member of Big Island Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Michelle Nicely and husband Ricky of Big Island; two sons, Chris Day and wife Donna of Bedford and Lee Day and wife Helen of Gate City, TN; six grandchildren, Kevin, Tiffany, Kayla, Garrett, Nick and Zoey; two brothers, Allen Burks and wife Barbara and Larry Burks both of Big Island; and her faithful companion, Bruiser.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 16, 2003 at Big Island Baptist Church by Rev. Bryon Lepere. Interment will follow in Big Island cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6 – 7:30 p.m., Saturday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and at other times at the home of Cheryl’s mother Alma at 1282 Moutainview Heights, Big Island.

Sarah E. Kabler

Sarah E. Kabler, 91, Westminster-Canterbury, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006. She was born in Rustburg to the late Daniel Smith Evans and the late Bessie Watkins Evans.

Preceded in death by her husband of over sixty years, N. Haynie Kabler, her son Nicholas, and siblings Virginia, Clair, Frank, and Edith.

She is survived by her son, Walton, of California, and daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ken Robichaux, of South Carolina.

Other remaining family includes two brothers, Hartwell and Raymond, five nieces, including Kay Childress of Goode, two nephews, and eleven great nieces and great nephews, and many friends.

Sarah graduated from E. C. Glass High School and from Randolph Macon Woman's College.

A cherished wife, mother, and homemaker, she also was a teacher and librarian.

She took graduate education courses from Furman University and the University of South Carolina, and library science from the University of Kansas, and University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Sarah taught at Brookville High School (Campbell County), Paris Elementary (Greenville, SC) and Gatun Elementary (Canal Zone, Panama).

She was employed in libraries at the School of the Americas, in the Panama Canal Zone, and at Randolph Macon Woman's College, where she worked until her retirement in 1982 as Cataloger Emerita.

Sarah was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, and a lifetime member of the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club and the A.T. Conference.

Services will be private. Those who wish to do so may make a memorial contribution to the Westminster¬Canterbury Employee Education Fund, 501 V.E.S. Rd., Lynchburg, VA, 24503 or to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, Public Service Building, 34 Wall St., Suite 802, Asheville, NC 28801-2710.

Whitten Funeral Home, Park Avenue Chapel is assisting the family.

Leonard Stephen (Steve) Rogers

Leonard Stephen (Steve) Rogers, 50, of 792 Izaak Walton Road, Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 in the University of Virginia Hospital from injuries received in a motorcycle accident. He was the husband of Joan Maddox Rogers.

Born July 20, 1952 in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late Roy F. and Kathleen White Rogers. Steve was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Harley Owners Group.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John H. Maddox.

In addition to his wife, he is survived three sons, Christopher D. Rogers and his wife, Melissa of Evington, Sgt. John D. Rogers and his wife, Rebecca of Schofield Barricks, Hawaii, Matthew S. Rogers of Amherst; one daughter, Stacey M. Martin and her husband, Sgt. Paul Martin of Fort Bliss, TX; five granddaughters, Whitney, Abigail, Katerina, Lauren, and Chloe; one brother, Roy Rogers; one sister, Kathy Cortez and her husband, Marty of Alexandria and his mother-in-law, Frances Maddox.

Funeral services, 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003 at Whitten Monelison Chapel. Interment in Amherst cemetery.

Family visitation Friday, March 21, 2003 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc.

Steven Thomas Bernard Floyd

Steven Thomas Bernard Floyd, 6, of Concord, went to be with Jesus, Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at Lynchburg General Hospital after a history of illness.

Born May 13, 1997, in Lynchburg, he is the son of Steve Wayne Floyd, Sr. and Wanda Woodson Floyd of Concord.

Steven was a student at Rustburg Elementary School .

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Amanda L. Floyd and Jessica N. Floyd, both of Concord, his paternal grandfather, Raymond Russell Floyd of Naola, and his step-grandfather, Curtis Herndon of Scottsville.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2003 from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Tim Wilde, pastor of Yellow Branch Baptist Church. Burial will be the Floyd Family cemetery, Concord.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence.

Joseph Fitzgerald

Joseph Fitzgerald, 15, of Madison Heights, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

Born February 26, 1990, in Lynchburg, he was the son of Barry Wallace Fitzgerald, Sr. and Angelita Seigla Fitzgerald.

Joseph had played drums in the Monelison Middle School Band and was currently in the 10th grade. He had received the Golden “A” award three years running.

Survivors also include his maternal grandmother, Linda Seigla, of Lynchburg and maternal grandfather, James Seigla, Jr., of Michigan, four half brothers, Barry Fitzgerald, Jr., of Madison Heights, Wallace Fitzgerald, Daniel Fitzgerald and Jonathan Adams, all of Wisconsin, a half sister, Regina Fitzgerald, of Madison Heights, an aunt, Shari Merrill, and uncle, James Seigla, III, both of Lynchburg; three cousins, David Seigla, Micah Votaw and Isaiah Seigla, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Madison Heights Baptist Church by Dr. Tim Madison.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5-7:00 p.m. at the church and at other times at the residence.

James Ronald Jarman

James Ronald Jarman, 51, of Evington died Thursday, March 20, 2003 at his residence.

Born in Lynchburg, July 15, 1951, he was the son of the late James Cecil and Erma Dudley Jarman. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was the owner of Cecil's Drive Inn in Evington.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth James (Jamie) Jarman of Evington; one sister, Susan J. Milton and her husband Wallace of Forest; one uncle, Willard Dudley and one cousin Wallace Camper both of Evington and a very special friend, Joyce Elliott of Lynch Station.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel with the Reverend Marvin Suitt officiating. Interment will follow in Altavista Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of her sister, 319 Royal Court, Forest.

Sister Stella Naomi Blanchard Arnold

Sister Stella Naomi Blanchard Arnold, 94, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, June 27, 2003 at Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation. She was the wife of the late Charles Henry Arnold who passed away January 15, 1986.

Born April 7, 1909 in Chester, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late Alma Moroni Blanchard and the late Harriett Smith Blanchard. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers.

Sister Arnold is survived by: her son; Charles L. Arnold and her daughter; Patricia Carol Arnold Lawhorne both of Lynchburg, nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints by Bishop L. Robert Halpin. Interment will follow at Spring Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.

Bessie Tyree Ray Couch

Bessie Tyree Ray Couch, 89, of the Odd Fellows Home and formerly of Madison Heights, died Saturday, January 24, 2004 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Twice married she was the wife of the late Howard Marshall Ray and the late Richard Wallace Couch.

Born July 11, 1914 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Dallas and Ella Ressie Fitzgerald Tyree. Mrs. Couch was retired from General Electric and was member of the Rebekkah Lodge and a former member of the Ageless Wonders. She was also a longtime member of Sandy Bottom Christian Church.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ethel T. Smith; four brothers, Clarence W. Tyree, Ollie E. Tyree, James L. Tyree, and B. Dallas Tyree, Jr. and one grandson, Richard W. Couch, III.

Mrs. Couch is survived by one son, William M. "Billy" Ray and his wife, Joyce of Madison Heights; two step-children, Peggy Brisentine and her husband, Robert of Prospect and Richard W. “Dickie” Couch, Jr. and his wife, Barbara of Forest; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Ray, Robert Brisentine, Jr., Vickie Sisson, Cindy Hunter, Darden Couch and Whitney Lane; five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday from Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Jim Freeman. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, Billy.

Leamon Beck

Leamon Beck, 87, died Saturday, August 28, 2004 in the Perry Point V.A. Medical Center in Perry Point, MD.

Born September 1, 1916 in Tabor City, N.C., he was the son of the late David Lenox Hewitt and the late Elba Beck. He was a retired welder and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alfreda Hewitt and Anne H. Linburger.

Mr. Beck is survived by one son, Ralph H. Beck of Lynchburg; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors by American Legion Post 330 will conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2004 in Culpeper National cemetery by Post Chaplain Bill Jagdman.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

James Roland Butler, Sr.

James Roland Butler, Sr., 82, of 129 Woodhaven Court, Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003 in Runk & Pratt Residential Adult Care. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Josephine Rittenour Butler.

Born January 18, 1921 in Charlottesville, he was the son of the late John William and Mary Stokes Butler. Mr. Butler was a retired Master Sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corp. and proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Butler was Winton Country Club's first golf pro and the founder of the Patrick Henry Invitational Golf Tournament.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Butler is survived by his son, James Roland Butler, Jr. and his wife, Lily of Seattle, Washington; his daughter Sherrie Butler Cash and her husband, Timothy of Madison Heights and two grandson, Derek and Devin Cash, both of Madison Heights.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
