Virginia Marie Harper
Virginia Marie Harper, 83, of Lynchburg died Monday, June 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. in Runk&Pratt Adult Care. She was the wife of the late Johnny A. Harper.
She was born October 3, 1918 in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late William R. Wright and Rosa Virginia Candler Wright. She retired from Imperial Reading and was a member of Fairview Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Vickie Lee Johnson Campbell.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Carroll Harper and Robert Dean Harper of Lynchburg; two daughters, Delores Johnson Guthrie of Nathalie and Phyllis Parker Burchette of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Jan Weston and the Rev. Dale Harper.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and other times at the residence of her daughter, Phyllis, 309 Roberts Avenue and her son, Carroll, 117 Wayne Drive.
The family suggests memorials be made to Fairview Christian Church.
Mary Madeline Howard
Mary Madeline Howard, 83, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Franklin Howard who passed away August 21, 1979.
She was born July 8, 1920 in Inez, KY and was a member of Fort Avenue Church of Christ.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by five sons, Roger, Bennie, Richard, Russell and David and by a daughter Audrey Mae.
She is survived by four sons, James A. Howard, Sr. of Ocala, Fla., Robert “Jack” Howard of Forest and Mack Howard and Eddie Howard both of Lynchburg, eight grandchildren, Jackie, Justin and James Howard, Jr., Jamie Wagurak, Cheryl Lacks, Sandy and Allan Sale, Cheryl Moore and Janet Nuckles, three daughters-in-law, Nancy Osborne, Sybil Gallier and Shirley Miller and was “Granny” to many others.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2003 at Fort Avenue Church of Christ by Pastor Lee Cannon and Pastor Charles E. McGhee. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 p.m., Thursday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel.
Elizabeth Catherine “Liz” St. John Laughon
Elizabeth Catherine “Liz” St. John Laughon, 84, of Lynchburg, died Friday October 8, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born August 23, 1920 in Hat Creek, she was a daughter of the late Orman St. John and the late Nellie Smith St. John.
“Liz’ retired from Imperial Reading Company after 43 years service and continued to work for Park Ave. Flower Shop for an additional 14 years; she was a former member of Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church, Rustburg and presently a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Robert W. “Bob” Laughon, along with numerous cousins and extended family.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday October 11, 2004, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by Dr. Robert Wilson and the Rev. Sherwood Smith. Burial will follow in Presbyterian cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. today at the funeral home, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at the residence.

Marian Reinert Butscher
Marian Reinert Butscher, 69, of 145 Shearingham Drive, Madison Heights, died Friday, February 22, 2002 at the Hospice House of the Hills. She was the wife of the late George Peter Butscher, Jr.
Born August 8, 1932 in Berks County, PA, she was the daughter of the late Curtis S. and Sadie Schlegel Reinert. Mrs. Butscher was a retired cafeteria supervisor at Lynchburg General Hospital and a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Reinert.
Mrs. Butscher is survived by three daughters, Janet Dabrowski and her husband, Eugene, Kathy Stolvoort and her husband, Fred, all of Madison Heights, and Melanie McHaney and her husband, Doug of Rustburg; five grandchildren, Michael and Laura Dabrowski, Jason Stolvoort, and Cayla and Caleb McHaney and three sisters, Corine Measler and her husband, Harvey of Zionsville, Pa., Elaine Gothe and her husband, Walter of Macungie, PA, and Ruth Becker and her husband, Tom of Fonda, NY.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Dr. Jerry Falwell and the Rev. Charlie Harbin. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, Janet, 143 William Drive, Madison Heights.

Essie Staton Padgett
Essie Staton Padgett, 95, of Forest, died Sunday June 2, 2002 at The Carrington of Lynchburg.She was the widow of Vernon H. Padgett, Sr.
Born in Bedford County, January 1, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Joseph C. Staton and Nora Lawhorne Staton. Mrs. Padgett was the owner of Ivy Post Catering for many years before her retirement, and was a devoted member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Vernon H. Padgett, Jr., a great-granddaughter, five brothers, and five sisters. She is survived by two sisters, Edith Padgett and Helen Kitchens; three grandchildren, Gerald Padgett, Deborah Barr, and Vernon Padgett; a great-grandson, Douglas Dean Smith a great-great-granddaughter, Kayla Smith; her loving and trusted friend of 34 years, Carolyn Jackson; and numerous devoted nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 5, 2002 at Shiloh United Methodist Church, by Dr. Wayne Wiley and Dr. Pat Simon. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park.

Catherine Marie Angus McGuire
Catherine Marie Angus McGuire, 66, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of the late Harry N. “Micky” McGuire.
Born March 30, 1937 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Hilton Angus and the late Mattie Mays Angus.
She is survived by: four sons; Lewis R. Creasy, Jr. and Kenneth W. “Pete” Creasy and wife Teresa both of Appomattox, Ricky L. Creasy and wife Rebecca and Richard O. Creasy both of Lynchburg, a daughter; Cathy W. Creasy of Lynchburg, ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren, two sisters; Edna Angus and Shirley Burton, and four step-children; Eugene, Kenneth, Steve and Timmy McGuire.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at Tree of Life cemetery, Route 29 South by the Reverend J. Mike Dodson.
Friends and family may visit today from 6 – 8 p.m. at the home of her son Ricky L. Creasy at 186 Sunny Bank Dr., Lynchburg.

Walter Franklin Manuel, Jr.
Walter Franklin Manuel, Jr. “Hoss”, 72, of Evington, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at his home.
He was born May 10, 1931 in Campbell County the son of the late Walter Franklin Manuel, Sr. and the late Lillie May Callahan Manuel. Mr. Manuel was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the US Air Force.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Manuel was preceded in death by a sister, Adelle Manuel Mason.
He is survived by his son, Troy Manuel and his wife Amy of Evington, a sister, Minnie Manuel Mason of Gladys, his faithful companion, “Mr. Cat” and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003 at the Manuel Family cemetery, Evington by Reverend Norman Ramsey and Reverend Charles Schoolar.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 p.m., Friday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and at other times at home of his son at 5581 Colonial Hwy., Evington.

Patricia Marie Long Epps
Patricia Marie Long Epps, 60, of Lynchburg, VA, met her Lord, Wednesday, June 09, 2004 at her residence. She was the wife of Robert Dwight Epps of Conshohocken, PA.
Born April 11, 1944 in Chester, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mildred Long. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Mrs. Epps is survived by three daughters, Jacquie Mullins and her husband, Jonathan Mullins, Sr. of Lynchburg, Deborah Goulette Moore and her husband, Ian of Monroe, VA and Andrea Walton and her husband, Danny of Elkton, MD; one son, Michael W. Goulette of Prospect Park, PA and eleven grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004 at Temple Baptist Church Madison Heights, VA by, Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr. and Pastor Tim Kinney. Interment will follow in Presbyterian cemetery.

Patricia Wingfield Swire
Patricia Wingfield Swire, 64, of Virginia Beach, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006.
Born November 26, 1941, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Lynwood Wingfield and Sally Sirocco Wingfield.
Mrs. Swire was a retired medical assistant and was of Methodist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Myers and wife, Angela, and Mark Myers and wife Sandy, both of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Kathryne, Patricia, and Madison Myers, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at noon, Friday, February 10, 2006, at Meade cemetery.

Grace Rebecca Burnett Minnick
Grace Rebecca Burnett Minnick, 89, of Lynchburg, died April 16, 2002 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Herbert E. Minnick. Born in Bedford County, December 17, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Ellis Moorman Burnett and Verna Arthur Burnett and was preceded in death by brothers: George, Austin, and Melvin Burnett; sister: Louise Burnett Burton; and grandson: William Timothy Loflin. Mrs. Minnick was educated in Lynchburg Public Schools and was a devoted member of Park View United Methodist Church for 65 years.
She is survived by a daughter: Shirley Loflin and husband, Bill of Forest; two sons: Gene Minnick and wife, Glenda of Bedford, and Robert Minnick and wife, Diane of Federal Way, Washington and their daughter, Faith; a sister: Frances Moses of Lynchburg; six grandchildren: Kathy Bobbitt, Rebecca Brooks and husband, David; Robert Minnick and wife, Freda; Daniel Minnick and wife, Rene' and Matthew Minnick and wife, Michelle; and their mother: Il Im No Minnick; seven great-grandchildren: Luke, Zach, Abby, Madison, Jacob, Emma, and Olivia; and three nephews: David and Keith Moses and Joe Burnett.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday April 20, 2002 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, by the Rev. Sandra McMillen and retired Bishop C. P. Minnick of Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today (Thurs) at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road.
Grace was dedicated to raising her family, she loved gardening and bird watching.

Edward Lee Banton, Sr.
Edward Lee Banton, Sr., 67, of Rustburg, died Monday, January 26, 2004 following a lengthly illness. He was the husband of the late June Hendricks Banton.
Born in Amherst County, he was a son of the late James Obie Banton and Mary Massie Banton. In addition to his wife, June, his son, Edward Lee Banton, Jr., preceded him in death.
Surviving are a daughter, JoAnne Whittaker of Gladstone;a step-daughter,
Barbara Rosser of Concord; brother, James O. Banton, Jr.; sisters, Jane Blanks and Elizabeth Fitzgerald all of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date, Whitten Park Ave. Chapel is assisting the family with services.
Nell Jackson Wicky
Nell Jackson Wicky, 85, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday November 20, 2004 at the Carrington of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Peter Wicky.
Born January 12, 1919 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Janie Smith Jackson.
Mrs. Wicky was a nurse for Dr. Clarence Keifer for 18 years, head of the Radiology Dept. at Lynchburg Training School and Hospital for 18 years, retired from B.&.W. after 14 years of service and was a devoted member of Thomas Road Baptist Church since 1957.
She is survived by, Jerrilynn C. Elder and Gene Lucado, Theresa C. Brown, Lawrence Arthur and his wife Patricia Arthur all Lynchburg; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 23, 2004 at Pate Chapel of Thomas Road Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Falwell officiating.
Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
Visitation for family and friends, will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, 7404 Timberlake Road, and at other times at her daughters home, 424 Cambridge Drive, Lynchburg.
