Rev. Dr. Harold Wilson Rhodes, Sr.
The Rev. Dr. Harold Wilson Rhodes, Sr., 89, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 in the Carrington. He was the husband of the late Evans “Dee” Morris Rhodes for sixty-four years.
Born August 28, 1916 in Amherst County, he was a son of the late William Arthur and Kate Hartless Rhodes. He was a retired Disciples of Christ Minister and a member of Madison Heights Christian Church. The Rev. Dr. Rhodes graduated from Lynchburg College in August of 1950 with his B. A., the Lexington Theological Seminary in May of 1957 with his M. A. in Theology, and the International Bible Institute & Seminary in May of 1985 with his Doctor of Divinity.
He was ordained as a Minister in the Disciples of Christ at the Sandy Bottom Christian Church in July of 1950 and served as Pastor of Christian churches at Cedar Creek, Saumsville, Walnut Springs, and Zion Christian in the Shenandoah Valley, VA, Little Rock, KY, Victoria, VA, Clifton Forge, VA, Shenandoah, VA and Green Bay, VA and as District Minister in Missouri and Associate Minister of the State of West Virginia Christian Churches.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William A. Rhodes, Jr., Ralph Rhodes, and Cecil Rhodes and one sister, Ruby Rifle.
The Rev. Dr. Rhodes is survived by two sons, Harold W. Rhodes, Jr. and his wife, Charlotte of Prince George and Darryl W. Rhodes and his wife, Jeanie of Conway, SC; two brothers, Clarence Rhodes of Lake Worth, Florida and Lewis Rhodes of Erlanger, KY; one sister, Edna “Sis” Jennings of Madison Heights; five grandchildren, Tara, Wendi, Ashley, Elizabeth, and Timothy and nine great-grandchildren, Jared, Matthew, Jeremy, Jessica, Ian, Molly, Anna, David, and Andrew.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 3, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Paul Land. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Frances Downey Cobb
Frances Downey Cobb, 84, of Lynchburg, died Monday, October 9, 2006 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Johnny Oliver Cobb.
Born April 3, 1922 in Big Island, she was a daughter of the late John Billy and Virginia Byers Downey. Mrs. Cobb was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty W. Jennings and Shirley W. Ramsey; three sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Cobb is survived by one son, Dillard O. Cobb of Colorado Springs, CO; one daughter, Virginia W. Martin and her husband, Doug of Appomattox; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 12, 2006 at Fort Hill Memorial Park. .
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at the residence.

Mary Virginia Brown Porter
Mary Virginia Brown Porter, 83, of Lynchburg, died Saturday March 9, 2002 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
She was the wife of the late George Hurst Porter.
Born Septenber 18, 1918 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Henry Brown and Lucy Virginia Epperson Brown. Mrs. Porter retired from the Norfolk-Southern Railroad, and was a member of the former Memorial United Methodist Church and presently Heritage United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean P. Eberhardt; two sons, Michael R. Porter and wife, Carol and William H. Porter and wife, Sheila; a sister, Mae B. Van Meter; a sister-in- law, Rita W. Brown; a niece, Diane M. Brown; nine grandchildren, S. Scott Eberhardt and wife, Shan; D. Whitney Eberhardt and wife, Lisa; Lucy E. Breeden and husband, Russell; James M. Burd and wife, Carol; Natalie G. Porter; Christina P. Bailess and husband, Brian; Anna R. Porter; Benjamin H. Porter; and Virginia A. Porter; fourteen great-grandchildren; and very special friends, Ethel Davidson, Mildred Lewis, and Denise Hamlet.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday March 12, 2002 at Heritage United Methodist Church, by Dr. Stephen Hundley. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. today at Heritage United Methodist Church, and at other times at her residence, 740 Chinook Place.

Helen Grubbs Hicks
Helen Grubbs Hicks, 73, of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. For 36 years, she was the wife of Raymond L. Hicks who passed away in 1985.
Born March 24, 1930 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Frank Grubbs and the late Clara Brown Grubbs.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by: her daughter; Deborah Grant of Lynchburg, three sons; Michael Hicks and wife Brenda of Madison Heights and Milton Hicks and Mark “Pete” Hicks both of Lynchburg, a grandson; Lee Grant and wife Jennie of Lynchburg, a great granddaughter; Kalie Grant of Lynchburg and two sisters; Joyce Wright and Delores Neighbors both of Lynchburg.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., today at Presbyterian cemetery.

Page Rucker Lankford, 84, a resident of Guggenheimer Nursing Home, Lynchburg, died Thurs., Jan. 6, 2005 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born May 11, 1920 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Andrew Patterson Lankford and the late Corrie Tucker Lankford. He was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church and was a retired salesman from Dinner Bell Meat Products.
In addition to his parents, Page was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Patterson Lankford; and by two sisters: M. Helen Lankford and Annie L. Dalton.
He is survived by his son, Robert P. Lankford of Lynchburg.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, Jan. 10, 2005 at Fort Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Dr. Jim Alley and Pastor David Sexton.

Mary E. Harrell White
Mary E. Harrell White, 80, formerly of Madison Heights, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of the late Albert "Lloyd" White who passed away in 1994.
Born August 31, 1924 in Greene Co., NC, she was the daughter the late John Lewis Harrell, Sr. and the late Mary Ormond Harrell. Mrs. White retired from Central Virginia Training Center after over 25 years of employment there.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy W. Plaster.
She is survived by: her son, Thomas L. White and wife Ann of Amherst; two granddaughters: Alexandra Plaster and Amanda F. White; one brother, John Lewis Harrell, Jr. and wife Margaret "Peggy" of Winchester; two sisters: Frances H. Moon of Hurt and Lillie H. Deaner of Lynchburg.

Eleanor Jamerson Wooten, 47, of Appomattox, died Friday, February 24, 2006, at her residence in Appomattox.
Born December 18, 1958, in Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Silby Jamerson and Carlton William Jamerson.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Carl Edward Wooten, a son, Carroll "Gene" Massie, and wife, Tonya of Lynchburg, a daughter Mary "Liz" Massie, and fiancé Kyle Hall, of Madison Heights; a sister, Vivian Newman, and husband Charles, of Orange, VA, a brother, Richard Jamerson and wife, Ann, of Madison Heights, grandchildren; Kisten and Ryan Hall, of Madison Heights, a loving and devoted mother-in-law, Mae Wooten, of Appomattox, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents Eleanor was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Jamerson.

Lewis Lee Garnett, 57, of Madison Heights, died Friday, October 6, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born February 23, 1949 in Culpeper County, he was a son of the late Charles William Garnett, Sr. and the late Pattie Viar Garnett Walker; also two brothers, Elmer Kyle Garnett and Charles W. Garnett, Jr. preceded him in death. Lewis was a member of Northside Baptist Church of Madison Heights. He is survived by a daughter, Rachel L. Garnett; a sister, Susie G. Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 2006, at the Epicsopal cemetery, Rapidan, VA, by the Rev. Joyce W. Lawson, of Rustburg, died Tuesday February 5th, 2002 at Avant'e of Lynchburg.
She was the beloved wife of Jesse E. "Jack" Lawson for 54 years.
Born March 17, 1930 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Easter Hamilton Wright; and was predeceased by two grandsons: David A. Mason and Kevin E. Burnette.
Mrs. Lawson was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the Tree of Life Church.
In addition to her husband Jack, she is survived by two daughters: Linda L. Mason and husband Bert Mason, Sr. of Rustburg and Patricia L. Tucker of Lynchburg; a sister: Evelyn Spinks of Sebring, Ohio; four grandchildren: Bert Mason, Jr. and wife, Debbie; Eugene D. Burnette; Becky B. Snell and husband, Jim; and Laurie M. Mason; three great-grandchildren: Matthew T. Mason; Christian B. Mason; and Elizabeth M. Kendall.

David Edward "Brother" Reynolds
David Edward "Brother" Reynolds, 77, of Madison Heights, died Sunday June 9, 2002 at his residence. He was the husband of Nannie Parker Reynolds.
Born February 27, 1925 in Madison Heights, he was a son of the late Robert Henry Reynolds and Estelle Floyd Reynolds, and was preceded in death by a son, Robert Reynolds and a sister, Ruth Jordan. Mr. Reynolds received the Purple Heart while serving in the U.S. Army during W.W. II and was a life member of the D.A.V.; he was a member of Northside Baptist Church and retired after 36 years service with Mead Corp. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ronald E. Reynolds and wife. Diane and Larry L. Reynolds and wife Kathy; and a daughter, Edna Allen and husband Frank, all of Madison Heights; five grandsons, Ronald, Jr., Larry, Jr., and Michael Reynolds, Stephen, Jr. and David Kidd; six great-grandchildren, Sydney, Michael Thomas, MacKenzie, Tucker, and Baylee Reynolds, and Owen Kidd.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday June 12, 2002 at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with the Rev. Blaine Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in Presbyterian cemetery, with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 16.

Janet Hatcher Elder
Janet Hatcher Elder, 48, of Forest, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born June 26, 1954 in Floyd, she was the daughter of David Hatcher, Jr. and Madeline Puckett Hatcher both of Patrick Springs. Mrs. Elder was a Registered Nurse and was employed at Virginia Baptist Hospital and was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by: her husband; Douglas H. Elder of Forest, her son; Jeremy Douglas Elder of Lynchburg, her daughter; Jessica L. Elder of Forest and by three brothers; Lane, Gary and Daryl Hatcher.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Timberlake Baptist Church by Pastor James H. Alley. Interment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.

Calvin Lee Hamilton
Calvin Lee Hamilton, 66, of Forest, died Thursday July 31, 2003 following a short illness. He was the husband of Ellen Smith Hamilton, for 41 years.
Born May 14, 1937 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late William "Bill" Hamilton and Maxine Womack Hamilton.
Mr. Hamilton retired from B.& W. at Mt. Athos.
In addition to his wife Ellen, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley Creasy and her husband Eddie of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Jerimiah " Jerimie" Brooks, Jessica "Jessi" Brooks both of Lynchburg, Heaven Elliott of Rustburg, and Edward "J.R." Creasy, Jr. of Lynchburg; one great-grandson, Dakota Creasy; two uncles, Edward Hamilton of Forest and Lacy Womack of Lynchburg; two aunts, Frances Wilcher and Ellen Kidd both of Lynchburg.
