Veda Garver Bayless
Veda Garver Bayless, 75 of Amherst, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2005.
Born June 30, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Garver.
Mrs. Bayless was a member of the West View Baptist Church in Madison Heights.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kay Osborn.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Brown and her husband, Charles, of Amherst and a son, Gary Bayless and his wife, Patty, of Hot Springs, AR; two sisters, Mary Branfield and husband earl of Crestview, FL, and Rose Thomas of Van Wert, OH, one brother, Richard Garver and wife Betty of Bryan, Ohio, seven grandchildren, Genevieve and Joseph Brown, of Amherst, Jerry Hunt, of Greenwood, AR, Allen and Aaron Kemp, of Columbus, OH, Russell Bayless and Shannon Morrison, of Hot Springs, AR, 12 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the West View Baptist Church, by the Reverend Donald Stine.
The family will receive fiends after the service at the church.

John Fulmer Miller
John Fulmer Miller, 78, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, June 12, 2005 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Frances Belk Miller.
Born February 11, 1927 in Monroe, he was a son of the late Fulmer Bright Miller and Ethel Mae Stinnette Miller. Mr. Miller served in the United States Navy, and was a member of the Monroe Methodist Church. He was also an Ancient Free and Accepted Mason of Liberty Lodge # 95 in Bedford County and was a member of the VFW. Mr. Miller taught school in Lynchburg and was also a principal and teacher in the Amherst County School System, for over 32 years.
A nephew, Lynn Faulconer, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a step-son, Donald Grey Morris and his wife, Rosellen of Monroe and their children, Renee Morris, Lisa Aiken, Sam Morris and Denny Power, and five great grandchildren, step-daughter, Sue Morris of Monroe; two sisters, Joyce Miller Wooldridge of Catonsville, MD and Ercell Miller Faulconer of Faulconerville, nephew, Aubrey Farrar Faulconer a great niece, Tonya Faulconer, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Amherst cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel.

Shirley Inez Martin
Shirley Inez Martin, 68, of Madison Heights, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2006 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of 54 years to, Eddie A. Martin.
Born June 1, 1937, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Abraham and Gracie Martin. Mrs. Martin was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Phillips Business College and held various government positions as a computer programmer and was retired from G.E.
A brother, Givens Stanley Martin, also preceded her in death.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Wayne Martin of Amherst and a daughter, Charlotte Martin Knight, of Lynchburg; two brothers, William Sanford Martin of Amherst and Cecil Ray Martin and wife, Lisa, of Concord, a sister, Ruth Arlene Mayberry of Rustburg and a granddaughter, Courtney Nicole Knight, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at Whitten Monelison Chapel by Pastor Harlan Cooke. Interment will take place in Briarwood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times at the residence.

Betty M. St. John
Betty M. St. John, 86, of 3223 Maryland Ave., Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of the late Coleman Waddell St. John who passed away April 2, 1966.
Born September 8, 1915 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Fairest Delight Tibbs Jennings. She was employed many years and was fondly remembered from her time at High’s Ice Cream Store, and was a member of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. St John is survived by a son, Wayne St. John, Sr and his wife Wanda of Lynchburg, a daughter, Joyce Marshall and her husband Bruce of Hampton, six step-children, Waddell St. John of Calif., Florence McKinney of Gladys, Bobby St. John of Forest, Virginia Noblin of Brookneal, Warren St. John of Gretna and William “Bill” St. John of Lynchburg. She is also survived by many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday from Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and will be officiated by her grandson Mike McKinney. Interment will be in Midway Baptist Church cemetery, Phoenix, VA.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the St. John residence at 3223 Maryland Ave., Lynchburg.

Wright Thelma Courtney St. Clair
Wright Thelma Courtney St. Clair, 85, of 213 Clays Crossing, Forest, died Friday January 17, 2003. She was the wife of the late Luther Carrington "Brownie" Wright, Jr.
Thelma was born December 3, 1917 in Gilpin, MD, the daughter of the late John David St.Clair and Lula Cofer St.Clair and also her maternal grandparents were the late Jacob Hopkins Cofer, Color Bearer, CSA and Sallie Wilson Cofer and her paternal grandparents were the late George St.Clair and Elizabeth Johnson St.Clair. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas E. St.Clair and a sister, Frances S. Gallaher.
She graduated from New London Academy in 1936 and was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church and was past president of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by two daughters, Joanne W. Johnson and her husband, the Rev. Charles E. Johnson, Jr and Cynthia W. Carwile and her husband, Revely Carwile, Jr of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Courtney Harrington and husband, the Rev. David Harrington of Rochester, NY, Jeremiah Levi Johnson and wife, Robyn of Lynchburg and Patrick Carrington Oswald of Spartenburg, SC; two great grandchildren, Thomas Harrington and Taisie Harrington and she was waiting for her third great grandchild.; two sisters, Stella S. Drinkard of Appomattox and Helen S. Taylor and her husband, W.B. Taylor of Amherst.; her former son-in-law, Matthias Oswald and a special life long friend, Edna Gallaher Johnson and many other special friends and family.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by Dr. Wayne Wiley, the Rev. Eugene Condrey, Dr. Pat Simon and the Rev. Charles E. Johnson, Jr. Interment will be in the Masonic Garden at Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the residence

John Obdiah Perry
John Obdiah Perry, 85, of 177 Grove Avenue, Madison Heights, died Saturday, October 11, 2003 in the Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Margaret Moore Perry.
Born December 22, 1917 in Nelson County, he was the son of the late William Addison and Susie Fitzgerald Perry. He was retired from Leighton Heel Co., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Pete, James, and Harry Perry and two sisters, Mattie Shumate and Annie Bryant.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Perry is survived by one son, LCDR Robert Perry, U.S. Navy Retired of Waynesboro; one granddaughter, Lanita Perry Wood; two step-grandsons, William and Roy Dudley; three great-granddaughters, Raven, Blakely, and Lydia and one step-great-grandchild, Tesla.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at Temple Baptist Church, Madison Heights by Pastor J.D. Surbaugh, Jr., Dr. Dan Reichard, and the Rev. Tim Kenny. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post #16 will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst.

Mertland Higgs
Mertland Higgs, 94, of Forest died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Lily Gertrude Higgs.
Born in Nassau, Bahamas, April 20, 1909, he was a son of the late William and Sarah Jane Thompson Higgs.
Mr. Higgs moved to Lynchburg from the Bahamas in 1978 and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Maggie Anne Newbold and her husband Roy and Jean Valerie Albury and her husband David all of Nassau; six grandchildren, Dave Albury and his wife Lisa, Richard Albury and his wife Andrea, Timothy Albury and his wife Charleen, Lance Albury and his wife Beth; Candy Nottage and Carlisle Newbold; 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Dr. Jerry Falwell officiating. A private interment will follow in Spring Hill cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Inez Kirby Weeks, 82, of Forest, died Friday November 19, 2004 at the Carrington of Lynchburg.

Eula Ruth Brizendine
Eula Ruth Brizendine, 87, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, May 2, 2002 at Avante’ at Lynchburg.
Miss Bizendine was born December 5, 1914 in Amherst County, VA. She was the daughter of the late James Alexander Brizendine and Gracie Miller Brizendine. She was a member of Sandusky Baptist Church.
She is survived by a sister; Mattie L. Brizendine of Lynchburg, 2 sisters-in-law; Cabel Brizendine, Elizabeth Brizendine and a brother-in-law; Buford Eanes, and many nieces and nephews.
Miss Brizendine was pre-deceased by 2 brothers; Sheffie and Raymond Brizendine and by 4 sisters: Annie Carter, Hattie Eanes, Irene Lundvall and Edna Brizendine.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Monday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Reverend Bobby L. Wood. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Louise Sanford Skinner
Louise Sanford Skinner, 84, of Lynchburg, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2002 at her home. She was the widow of the late Joseph Harold Skinner, Sr. who passed away May 28, 1995.
Born July 10, 1918 in Westmoreland County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Louis Sanford and the late Laura Hall Sanford.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Skinner was preceded in death by a son; Richard L. Skinner and by a sister Hilda Jenkins.
She is survived by: three sons; Joseph H. Skinner, Jr., and his wife Helen, William B. Skinner and Edward W. Skinner all of Lynchburg, eleven grandchildren; Mary Messer, Joseph Skinner, III, Lisa Jones, Mark Skinner, Stephen Skinner, Gerard Skinner, Nancy Witt, John Skinner, Richard Skinner, Jr., Dianne Osborne and Lauren Skinner, fourteen great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, three sisters; Vivian McGuire of Montross, Lina Bryant and Mae Rogers and husband Ed both of Bedford, a daughter-in –law; Patsy Alter of Lynchburg, and a brother-in-law; Bailey Skinner and wife Dixie of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Jesse Edgar Bowling, Jr.
Jesse Edgar Bowling, Jr., 71, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at his residence. He was the husband of Helen Mays Bowling.
Born in Amherst, October 8, 1931, he was a son of the late Jesse Edgar and Mary Elizabeth Campbell Bowling. He was a retired truck driver and was a U.S. Army veteran.
One daughter, Barbara Gail Bowling; one sister, Maybell Lawhorne and one brother, John Bowling, preceded him in death.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jesse E. Bowling, III, and his fiancée Rhonda Deel and Kenneth Wayne Bowling and his wife Angela both of Amherst; four daughters, Patricia Ann DeLuca and her husband Louis of Concord, Diane Koda and her husband John of Amherst, Janet L. Wood and her husband Timothy of Rustburg and Karen Couch and her husband Danny of Lynchburg; two brothers, Lowell Bowling and Harold Lee Bowling both of Amherst; one sister, Mary Ellen Campbell of Madison Heights; 12 grandchildren, Kim Wood and husband Roger, Mark Anthony Bowling and fiancée Laurie, Crystal Dawn Marie Bowling, John Koda, Jr. and wife Melissa, Chris Koda, Dawn Koda, Danny Couch, Jr., Brian Couch, Brandon Couch, Nathan Reed Bowling, Matthew O’Brian Bowling and Jacob Allen Bowling and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. George Kreidel, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service until 5:00 p.m.
