Catherine H. Pitzer, 78, Forest
Catherine Elizabeth Huyett "Libbie" Pitzer, 78, of Forest, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at her home. She was born in Hagerstown, MD on June 21, 1922, daughter of the late Charles Willis Huyett and Mildred Catherine Bowers Huyett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Bowers Pitzer, Jr. and a daughter, Nancy Pitzer Vermillion.
Mrs. Pitzer loved golf, bridge, and art. She graduated from Hagerstown High School with the class of 1939, and attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and graduated from the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore in 1943. She also attended the Teachers' College at Columbia University in New York City.
Mrs. Pitzer was an art teacher for Howard County Maryland schools in 1943-1944 and Washington County Maryland schools in 1943-1945. She was president of the Washington County Girl Scout Council in 1959. She moved to Lynchburg and served as President of General Electric Engineers "Wives Club" in 1962-1963. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, a volunteer Girl Scout Leader, the Rivermont Peakland Service Unit Chairman in the 1970s, the Chalet Patrol Advisor in 1980 for the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council.
She is survived by her son, Henry B. Pitzer, III, Va. Beach; her daughter, Margery P. Bockwoldt, Sterling; her brother, Charles Brinham Huyett, Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren; a great granddaughter.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lynchburg with Rev. Dennis S. Roberts officiating.

Saphronia P. Scott, 87, Bedford
Saphronia Anna Penn Scott departed this life on Feb. 8, 2001 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 25, 1912 to the late Johnson and Mary Bowman Penn.
She joined the Bold Branch Baptist Church in 1925 and there remained a faithful member until her death. Saphronia was a member of the Women's Ministry, the Senior Choir, a dedicated member of the weekly Bible Class and the Mother of the Church.
She was married
to the late Thomas A. Scott, Sr. and to this union was born three sons. Two of her sons, Clarence E. Scott and Thomas A. Scott, Jr., preceded her in death and two daughters-in-law, Lettie S. Scott and Annabelle P. Scott. Also one grandson, two great-grandsons, and two sisters, Hazel P. Parker and Zelma P. Osborne.
She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Earl R. Scott of Fairfax; four granddaughters; five great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters and five great-great-granddaughters; seven sisters, Clarissa Bond and Beulah (William) Payne of Bedford; Irnishel (Clarence) Drew of Richmond; Lucille Lee, Dorothy Drew and Shirley Moore of New York; Eunice (Matthew) Harderman of Texas; three brothers, Timothy (Beatrice) Penn and John Sterling (Ararminta) Penn of Arlington; Landon E. (Marie) Penn of New York and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. There was also a special bonding of a great-niece and a great-nephew.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at the Bold Branch Baptist Church, Bedford.
Interment followed in the Old Bold Branch Baptist Church cemetery. Rev. Clayton Poole, Jr. officiated.
Mary L. Bowyer, 89, Bedford
Mary Letha Bowyer, 89, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 in the Bedford County Nursing Home.
She was born May 13, 1911 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Wesley Creasy and Annie Bell Witt Creasy.
Her husband was the late Francis M. Bowyer, Sr.
She was a member of the Nicopolis United Methodist Church.
She is survived by five sons, Francis M. Bowyer, Jr., William Oscar Bowyer, Thomas Rucker Bowyer, Bernard Martin Bowyer, all of Bedford; Kenneth Lee Bowyer, Newport News; a sister-in-law, Nellie Creasy, Bedford; eleven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild.
A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, from the Nicopolis United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Barbara Lagerveld.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Lloyd D. Burrow, 60, Bedford
Lloyd D. Burrow, 60, of Bedford, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Arkansas on Nov. 1, 1940, a son of Bertha Bolin Burrow of New Carlisle, Indiana, and the late Lawrence Brookfield Burrow.
He was vice president of North American operations for Wheelabrator Abrasives, Inc. He was a communicant of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Zanotti Burrow; a son, Steven L. Burrow; a daughter, Dawn B. Caldarella, and her husband, Scott, Manassas; two granddaughters; a brother, Charles Burrow, Moriarty, NM; three sisters, Laberta Burrow, Patricia Spinner, both of Albuquerque, NM, and Karen Burrow, Edgewood, NM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father James Cowles officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery.
The family suggests those wishing to make memorials consider the building fund of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Bedford.
William K. Clark, 72, Bedford
William Kenneth Clark, 72, of Bedford, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
He was born on June 1, 1928, a son of the late Oscar Clifford Clark and Mabel Pitts Clark.
He was also preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Mr. Clark spent 53 years in the furniture business, having worked at Broyhill Furniture, Pulaski Furniture, Vaughan-Bassett Furniture, and Pilliod Furniture. He retired in March of 2000 from Stanley Furniture company.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances H. Clark; one son, Randy Scott Clark, Summerville, SC; one daughter, Robin C. Wood, Bedford; three sisters, Marjorie C. Stanley, Stanleytown, VA, Joretta C. Griffith, Birmingham, AL and Kathryn C. Kelly, Pulaski; one brother, Norvell O. Clark, Fieldale; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A private family service was held from the graveside in Bedford.

Blair F. Fulton, 80, Roanoke
Blair Fishburn Fulton, 80, of Roanoke, passed away Jan. 30, 2001. He was the son of Sallie Fishburn and James Kyle Fulton of Roanoke, husband of Mary Joan Rawson Fulton.
He graduated from Jefferson High in 1937, attended Roanoke College and graduated from Duke University in 1941.
He was a medic in the 9th Division, U.S. Army then graduated OCS in Anti-Aircraft, served overseas a year, returned to the United States and changed to Infantry, was in the lead element of Patton's Third Army, 26th Yankee Division, wounded near the German border, nine months in hospitals, then in charge of Fiscal Section of Finance Office of Separation Point, Camp Croft, S.C. and discharged December 22, 1945.
He became Assistant-Treasurer of Thaden Jordan Furniture Corp., then with a tax lawyer, then with the IRS where he taught corporate and individual tax law in the Richmond District, Philadelphia Region and Arlington in the National Training Center. He was a Field Examining Agent, was on the public Speaker's Panel, and was a panelist and moderator on radio and TV shows.
He was a lifetime member of Greene Memorial United Methodist Church serving on the Board for a number of years, was former ROA District V-P Dept. Va., former Director of Family Service and Family Aid Society, former Jaycee, charter member and former Director of Roanoke Chapter of Institute of Management Accountants, member and former Trustee of Military Order of Purple Heart's Roanoke #510 Chapter.
He had four children, Dr. Jo Anne Juncker, Phd., New Jersey, Blair F. Fulton II; Dr. Donna Fulton McKay, D.C., and Sophia A. Beasley.
He has two sisters, Katherine R. (Mrs. James L.) Gee of Victoria and Ella Lee (Mrs. C. N.) Manning, Fla. His sister, Mary Virginia (Mrs. W. E.) Skelton of Blacksburg predeceased him, five grandchildren and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Feb. 2, 2001, from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Robert L. Watts, the Rev. Walter M. Lockett, Jr. and the Rev. C. Warner Crumb officiating.
Interment with military honors followed in Evergreen Burial Park.
Woodrow W. Newcomer, age 72, Bedford
Woodrow (Woody) Wilson Newcomer, age 72, of Bedford, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001 in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem.
He was born July 3, 1928 in Covington, a son of the late Harry Gatlin Newcomer and Marguerite Surber Newcomer.
He was retired from the U. S. Navy, having served in the Korean War and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Catherine Holley, Connie McCauley, Nancy Miller, Juanita Fix and two brothers, Monty Newcomer and Harry Newcomer.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Mae Atkinson Newcomer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph N. and Drema Newcomer, Moneta; John P. and Tracy Newcomer, Bedford; two daughters and son-in-law, Vickie N. and James R. Wright, Bedford; Debbie M. Newcomer and fiance, Carl Zimmerman, Bedford; a sister, Mary N. Roberts, Bedford; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nelson and Lillian Atkinson, Bedford; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was conducted from the graveside at the Mt. Olivet cemetery, on Thursday, Jan. Feb. 1, 2001, by the Rev. Earl Ragland.
Katie C. Watkins, 79, Bedford
Katie Comer Watkins, age 79, of Bedford, passed away Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 5, 1921 in Grayson County, a daughter of the late Lee A. Comer and Dona Blevins Comer.
Her husband was the late Carl Bayse Watkins. She was a member of the Chestnut Hill Freewill Baptist Church.
She is survived by six sons, Carl D. Watkins, Arthur Lee Watkins, John Wilson Watkins, Charlie D. Watkins, all of Bedford; Earl F. Watkins, Big Island; Jack David Watkins, Cummings, GA; a daughter, Rosaline Huskins, Iala, GA; a brother, Robert Comer, Hampton; a sister, Virginia Halsey, Bedford; 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at 2 p.m., from the Chestnut Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Big Island, by the Rev. Bill Stelle and Rev. Lester Horton.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12 noon until the time of the service on Wednesday.
Ruth Coleman Wilson, 69, Bedford
Ruth Coleman Wilson, 69, of West Hills Drive, Bedford, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of M. Calvin Wilson.
Born Feb. 11, 1931 in Shenandoah County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus Heaton Wynkoop and Vallie Ruth McIlwee Wynkoop, and was predeceased by a brother, Mervin Wynkoop.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Bedford, and retired from Lynchburg Physical Therapy. She later worked for Garman & Profitt Physical Therapy, Inc.
In addition to her husband, Calvin, she is survived by two sons, Stephen B. Coleman and wife, Sandra, Eddie Coleman and wife, Margie; a daughter, Stephanie C. Link and husband, Timothy all of Rustburg; two step-children, Ronald T. Wilson of Bedford and Janet W. Jacobs of Moneta; two sisters, Elga Stoneburner of Toms Brook, Janice Elliott of Front Royal; a brother, Zene Wynkoop of front Royal; six grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, by the rev. Wessley Patterson, Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church.
Burial was in Cumbie Memorial cemetery, Rustburg.

Victor O. Wilson, 89, Bedford
Victor Ordway Wilson, age 89, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in a local nursing home.
He was born March 11, 1911, in Bedford County, a son of the late Cornelius Jackson Wilson and Artie (Ottie) Mae Newman Wilson.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Evelyn Pollard Wilson; a brother, Elisha R. Wilson and sisters, Lela W. Woodford, Nona W. Hogan, Emma W. Hogan, Gertrude W. Witt and Hazel W. Marsico.
He worked for many years at Walton's Store in Huddleston.
He owned and operated Wilson's Texaco in Bedford and retired from Bedford Grocery Company.
He was a former member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, having served as representative for the Otter District and the Central District. He was a former member of the Mentow Masonic Lodge of Huddleston and the Liberty Lodge of Bedford. He was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Huddleston. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Neal Wilson, of Norfolk; a daughter, Pat W. Williams and her husband, Bill, of Bedford; three grandchildren; three sisters, Nena W. Leftwich, Edna W. Musgrove and Ruth W. Cundiff, all of Bedford.
A funeral service was conducted from the graveside at the Bethesda United Methodist Church on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, by the Rev. Wayne Murphy.
