Mrs. Mae Murphy Arrington, 83, Moneta
Mrs. Mae Ethel Murphy Arrington, 83, of Moneta, departed this life on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by two sons, Freddie (Sadie) Arrington of Moneta, James Arrington of Roanoke, two daughters, Leola (Bonds) Jackson of Atlantic City, New Jersey and Ethel Jacqueline (Tony) Goddard of Pleasantville, New Jersey; two sisters-in-law, Mary Kasey and Lena Bonds, ten grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Promiseland Baptist Church, Moneta.
Interment followed in the Hurts-Gate cemetery, Moneta. The Rev. Dr. Harvey L. Penn officiated.
Rex P. Bumgarner, 53, Bedford
Rex Preston Bumgarner, 53, of Bedford, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Lynchburg on April 6, 1947, Easter Sunday, a son of James Simon Bumgarner of Forest and Helen Booker Lawson of Spout Springs. He was the loving husband of Carson Gantt Bumgarner.
He was preceded in death by their daughter, Hunter Gantt Bumgarner.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by his stepdaughter, Taylor Elizabeth Borel, Richmond; his stepson, Marcus Paul Borel, Bedford; two sisters, Betty B. Wilkins, Forest, and Linda B. Lampman, Columbia, SC; his brother, Kenneth R. Bumgarner, Amherst; two half sisters, Jane Crum, Williamsburg, and Sheree Yoder, Kansas City, MO.
Rex was a farmer, fence builder, farrier, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, and the Bedford County Hunt Club. Rex loved his wife, family, his farm, and the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. He loved and lived life to the fullest. He loved people and animals, especially horses, cats, and dogs. He was happiest at home on his farm in Bedford.
A memorial service was conducted Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with Rex's uncle, the Rev. Marc West, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
Sue W. Dowdy, 50, Rustburg
Sue Ellen Wilson Dowdy, age 50, of Rustburg, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at her residence.
She was born Nov. 19, 1950 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late R. D. Wilson and Katherine Laughlin Wilson. She was a member of the Tree of Life Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Maria V. Dowdy Pribble and her husband, Todd, Lynchburg; two sons, Thomas Dowdy, Jr., Altavista; Whit A. Dowdy and his wife, Sandra, Lynchburg; three beloved grandsons; also survived by many other important family members and friends.
A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001 from the Rock Pike Baptist Church, by the Rev. Mike Dodson and Rev. Beatrice Tassone.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Robert D. Jennings, 61, Bedford
Robert Daniel Jennings, 61, departed this life Jan. 24, 2001 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 12, 1940 to the late Walter P. Jennings and Caroline J. Jennings.
He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Reed Creek Baptist Church in Big Island, where he served as an usher.
He leaves to cherish his homegoing two brothers, Walter Jennings of Bedford and Rufus (Mary) Jennings of Big Island; one sister, Annie Mae (George) White of Big Island; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 at the Reed Creek Baptist Church, Big Island.
Interment followed in the church cemetery. Rev. Curtis Moore, officiated.
John P. McCane, 47, Lynchburg
John Paul McCane, 47, of Cedar Creek Farm, Hawkins Mill Road, Lynchburg, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Logan, West Virginia on Aug. 29, 1953, a son of the late Bernard C. McCane and Carrie Adkins McCane. He was the husband of Jill Slusher McCane.
He was a representative of Ing Corp., a former commander with the Lynchburg Police Department and former lieutenant with the Bedford County Sheriff's Department. John was a loving and devoted father, and an avid outdoorsman and hunter.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, John David McCane, Collin Patrick McCane, Meagan Lee McCane and Carrie Anna McCane; three step-children, John Michael Gallagher, Misty Meredith Nibecker and Andrew Lawrence Nibecker, all of Lynchburg; a brother, G.C. "Buddy" McCane of Lynchburg; three sisters, Bernardine M. Souza of Falmouth, Mass., Janet M. Brown of Montvale and Deborah M. Shelton of Lynchburg.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. William Fisher officiating.
Jane G. Marshall, 71, Bedford
Jane Gibbs Marshall, age 71, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at her residence.
She was born April 12, 1929 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Harry Gibbs and Evelyn Creasy Gibbs.
She was a hairdresser and antique dealer and was member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Otis Marshall; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lynda and Doug Moses, Carolyn and Chuck McQuay, all of Bedford; a son and daughter-in-law, Otis (Chuck) and Glenda Marshall, Roanoke; a sister Kathryn Adkins, Water Park, FL; a half-sister, Suzie Snyder, Salem; three grandchildren, several great grandchildren.
A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Jan. 29, 2001, from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Gary Fowler.
Interment followed in the Virginia Memorial Park.

Alma H. Russell, 76, Bedford
Alma Keith Harvey Russell, 76, of Bedford, died Jan. 29, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital following a long illness.
She was born in Lynchburg and was the daughter of the late Lewis T. and Alma K. Harvey.
She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Rivermont Presbyterian Church, Flat Creek Baptist Church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Kedron Baptist Church, and Suck Spring Southern Baptist Church.
She was employed as a kindergarten teacher at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and by Campbell County.
She was a past president of the Little Garden Club of Gladys.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. (Luke) Russell, and is survived by her sister, Nancy H. Floyd of Lynchburg; two daughters; Karen R. English and her husband, Thomas F. English Jr. of Richmond and Mary Jane Russell of Bedford; one niece; one nephew; and a dear friend, Martha Stewart.
The family will receive friends Wednesday (today) from 7-8:30 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel and other times at the home of Mary Jane.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel by the Rev. Jerry M. Parr, followed by interment in Spring Hill cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Children's book fund at the Patrick Henry Memorial Library in Brookneal or the charity of choice.
John M. Terry, 83, Roanoke
John Mack Terry, age 83, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.
A native of Franklin County, Mr. Terry was the son of the late Samuel and Cora Terry.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evie G. Terry, Roanoke; three sons, Douglas M. (Carolyn) Terry, Joe H. (Betty) Terry and Kenneth L. Terry, all of Roanoke; one daughter, Lena M. (Curtis) Welcher, Roanoke; four brothers, Clinton (Betty) Terry, Roanoke, Odell (Ella) Terry, Wallace Terry, and Roy Terry, all of Hardy; one sister, Dorothy Taylor, Roanoke; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, aunt, Rosie Starkey, Wirtz; two sisters-in-law, Mattie P. Hancock, Bedford; Ruby Terry, Roanoke; devoted friend, Pricilla Motley, Roanoke and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, 2 p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with Rev. Cedric Malone officiating.
Interment will follow in Williams Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Edith H. Bandy, 90, Bedford
Edith Hall Bandy, age 90, of Bedford, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born March 12, 1910 in Montgomery County, a daughter of the late William Marion Hall and Callie Poff Hall.
She was a member of the Garber Chapel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Thomas Bandy, three sisters, Pauline Layman, Myrtle Noonkester, Dorothy Bradley, and two brothers, Robert Hall, Clarence Hall.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette B. & Tom Richardson, Bedford; a sister, Leona Riley, Roanoke; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Buck and Chris Hall, Ellis and Bernice Hall, all of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Slate, Christiansburg.
A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001 from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass, Jr. and Rev. David Forrest. Interment followed in the Sunset cemetery, Christiansburg.

Dorothy N. Christie, 94, Bedford
Dorothy Emma Nussbaum Christie, 94, of Bedford, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 12, 1906 in New York City, NY, a daughter of the late Herman Nussbaum and Dora Piquet Nussbaum.
She was a member of First Reform Church, Hawthorne, NJ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Thomas Christie, Sr.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Janet Eagler of Bedford, Jean Steinman of Hope, NJ and David Christie of Berkeley Heights, NJ; eleven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Eunice F. McIntyre, 89, Bedford
Eunice Fisher McIntyre, 89, of Bedford, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 17, 1911 in Bedford, a daughter of the late Booker Edward Fisher and Della Davis Moseley Fisher.
Eunice was a retired dental assistant for E. Y. Lovelace, Jr., D.D.S. and George T. Parker, D.D.S. and a lifetime member of the Belmont Garden Club. She was also a member of the Business & Professional Women's Club and the Bedford Historical Society.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Joseph McIntyre; two sisters, Estelle Fisher and Katherine F. Padgett; and two brothers, Willford M. Fisher and Edward D. Fisher.
Eunice is survived by two nephews; four nieces; and several great nephews and nieces.

Xavier E. 'Buff' Patterson, 27, Bedford
Xavier Edwardo "Buff" Patterson, 27, of Bedford, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Bedford on May 21, 1973, a son of the late Edward Leon Patterson, Sr. and Yvonne Evans Patterson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Maria Montez Patterson and Ava Denise Patterson; a brother, Edward Leon "Bona" Patterson, Jr. and a aunt, Annabelle Scott.
He was employed with Freedom Homes of Lynchburg.
Xavier was an accomplished artist and his favorite sport was basketball.
He loved working with and helping children.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Tara Suzette Hazzard-Patterson, Bedford; his sister, Yvonne D. "Yancy" Patterson, Bedford; Foster brother, David Barlow, Bedford; Foster sister, Cathy Barlow, Bedford; his aunt, Blanche Spinner; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jerry and Ellen Hazzard; sister-in-law, Margo Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Cheryl Riddick; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eugene and Jerrelle Griffin and four nephews. His special friends include the Dooley family and a host of friends, relatives and church family.
