Mst. Sgt. Virgil Ballard, 83, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alma Ballard; his daughter, Nancy Durrette and her husband, Alvin; his son, Boyd Ballard and his wife, Pam; four granddaughters, Laurie, Jennifer, Patty and Carolyn; other devoted family and friends. He served his country in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, retiring after 31 years. He was a member of Sandston Baptist Church and enjoyed crafts and gardening. Remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 12 to 2 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Paul D. Bookheimer, 67, of Midlothian, formerly of Ocean Pine, Md., passed away September 8, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Grace; two children: a son, Carlton and a daughter, Marian and her husband, Galen Rice; and two grandchildren, Amanda and Josh Rice. He was a dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland and retired from the Federal Government. BOROS
Rhoda Beatrice Boros of Richmond died on Monday, September 9, 2002. She was born in Manchester, Tenn., daughter of the late Lottie Mae Cunningham and Charles Wade West. Rhoda performed with her mother, father, sisters and brothers in a country music group for many of her growing-up years. She played the mandolin, sang, and yodeled. Her family entertained audiences in and around Coffee County, Tenn. and made an appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Rhoda worked as an office secretary during WWII and then became a model with the Ford Agency, working in Cleveland, Ohio and New York. While raising her family, she led the Sunday School at Lyndhurst Presbyterian Church in Ohio for several years. As her children grew, she turned her artistry to stained glass. She is survived by her husband, Albert George Boros of Richmond, Va.; her daughter, Deborah Woodward of Richmond, Va.; her son, Craig Albert Boros of San Diego, Calif.; her sister, Ann Pope of Jacksonville, Fla.; and her six grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday at Westhampton Memorial Park. Lois H. Brooke, 91, of Mechanicsville, passed away September 9, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Beale Brooke. She is survived by one daughter, Joan Cauley and husband, Arthur; one grandson, Arthur B. Janie Elizabeth Dodson, age 91, of Blackstone, died in Southside Community Hospital, Farmville, on September 10, 2002. The daughter of Mary Frances and William Jennings Dodson, she was born May 3, 1911 at Brandy Station, Culpeper County, Va. She received both B.S. and M.S. degrees at Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) and taught over 40 years in Blackstone. Those who were fortunate enough to be assigned to her fourth-grade class still consider themselves privileged, and still trade recollections of Miss Dodson as beloved teacher and strict disciplinarian. She was a long-time member of Blackstone Baptist Church, which at one time she served as deacon. Miss Dodson was predeceased by six half-sisters and her brother, William J. Dodson Jr. She is survived by several cousins. Funeral services will be held at Blackstone Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 12, with burial to follow at New Hope Baptist Church, Skipwith, Va. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church and was the Chairman of the Middlesex County Zoning Appeals Board and was also President of the County Farm Bureau. Survived by his wife, Olivia Wilson Gilbert; two daughters, Karen G. Hall and her husband, Robbie of Hardyville, Carrie O. Gilbert of Richmond; one grandson, Bailey Hall; his mother, Pauline S. Gilbert of Hardyville; a sister, Pamela G. Forrest and her husband, Marshall of Appomattox; a brother, Harry Lee Gilbert of Hampton.
