Eunice Crutchfield Martin
Mrs. Eunice Crutchfield Martin, age 92, of South Hill died Tuesday, Aug. 10, in the Hundley Annex. Mrs. Martin was the widow of Norman W. Martin and was preceded in death by her son, N. Winfred Martin Jr. and three brothers, Grover, Davis and "Jake" Cructhfield. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce M. Parker of South Hill, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Martin was a former supervisor of La Crosse Sportswear and Aileen, Inc. and a sewing machine operator at Lloyd's before retirement.
A graveside service was conducted by Dr. Walter G. Laseter Aug. 12, at Crestview Memorial Park.

George Randall Hickman
Mr. George Randall Hickman, age 62 of River Ridge, Bracey, died Tuesday Aug. 10, 2004 at his residence. He was retired from the U. S. Army with 23 years of service.
He is survived by two daughters Randi Hogan of Dinwiddie and Robin Grubb of Osterburg, Pa.; a son Phillip Hickman of Colonial Heights; a brother Tommy Powell of Villa Rica, Ga.; five grandchildren Chelsie and Chris Hickman, Amanda and Nathan Hogan Jr. and Brandon Grubb.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ruth "Mildred" Laney Spake
Mrs. Ruth "Mildred" Laney Spake, age 73 of Richmond, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004. She was the widow of Robert Spake and is survived by her son, Robert Lee Spake; her daughter, Joan Barfield; her grandson, Robert Lee Martin; three sisters, Mary A. Murray, Shirley Bonnie and Ann Clark; three brothers, Marvin, Linwood and Perry Laney.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
William Herbert Lewis
Mr. William Herbert "Buddy" Lewis, age 83 of Brodnax, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 in the W.S. Hundley Annex. He was a retired employee of the former Hoover-Jones Construction Co.
He is survived by his wife, Florence Barnette Lewis; three daughters, Betty Smith (David) of La Crosse, Patricia King (Philip) of Powhatan and Bonnie Clary (Lawrence) of Boydton; two sons, Bud Lewis (Georgia) of Kenbridge and David Lewis (Brenda) of Brodnax; four sisters, Barbara Beck and her husband, George of Brodnax, Ruby Upton and her husband, Donald of Stony Creek, Christine Jarrett of Stony Creek and Frances Heider of Brodnax; a brother, Frank Barnette of Yale; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mr. Lewis was predeceased by one sister and two brothers.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. DeVontae' Dion Meredith
DeVontae' Dion Meredith was born on Aug. 22, 2004 at the Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, N. Y. and died on Oct. 2, 2004 at the Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill.
He is survived by his parents, Clarissa Meredith and Darren Winter; his maternal grandparents, Curtis and Carolyn Meredith of Brodnax; his great-grandparents, Ercelle Hendricks of Blackridge, John and Cora Farris of Rocky Mount, N. C. and Frances Meredith of Maryland; his aunt, Coretta Farrar (Clifton) of North Carolina; his uncle, Curtis Meredith Jr. of Brodnax; 5 great-aunts; 5 great-uncles; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Good Hope Baptist Church in Blackridge with interment in the church cemetery.

Frankie L. Ragsdale
Frankie L. Ragsdale died on Oct. 10, 2004. He was the son of the late William H. Ragsdale Sr. and Anna Lillian Cole Ragsdale. He was born on May 9, 1947 in Mecklenburg County. On Aug. 21, 1970, he was married
to Laura L. Robinson, who preceded him in death.
At an early age, Mr. Ragsdale joined the Amity Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee, and remained a faithful member until his death. He was a member of the East End Class of 1965. He was a Vietnam veteran, who received the Purple Heart and an honorable discharge after serving two tours of duty. Until his health began to decline, he was a private contractor. As a contractor, he provided needed jobs for the young men in the community.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurisa Francine of Lawrenceville and Frankee Margareet, at home; nephew, Sherrod M. Robinson; six brothers, William H. John and Howard Ragsdale of LaCrosse, Harry (Doris) Ragsdale of Rocky Mount, N.C., Ralph (Phemie) Ragsdale of Ashland and Herbert (Bertha) Ragsdale of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two sisters, Maude R. (Paul) Lewis of Spotsylvania and Margaret R. (Keith) Spencer of Camp Springs, Md.; one aunt, Maude Young of Washington, D.C.; one uncle, Robert (Ann) Cole of Philadelphia, Pa.; nieces, Kristal and Karena Ragsdale and nephews Paul and David Lewis, Herbert and Rogerick Ragsdale and Calvin Ragsdale.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 16 at Amity Baptist Church in LaCrosse. Interment with military burial rites performed by VFW Post 7166 was at held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Macon, N.C. Feggins Funeral Home of South Hill was in charge of the arrangements.
George Harrison Sr.
George Harrison Sr. was born Jan. 15, 1921 in Dolphin to the late Dandy and Bessie Harrison and died Sept. 28, 2004 at Commander Nursing Home in Florence, S. C.
At an early age he joined Piney Grove Baptist Church in Warfield and later moved his membership to St. James Episcopal Church.
George received his education from Brunswick County Agricultural School. He served in the United States Army from 1943-1946 and received an honorable discharge. After he left the military he was employed by the United States Department of Justice in Special Services in New York for 23 years and retired in 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; children, Muriel (Ted) Willoughby, George Harrison Jr., and Joyce (Rev. Marvin) Fields; one sister, Grezzeil (Honey) Leaper; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Oct. 4, from St. James Episcopal Church, Warfield, with interment in the Crestview Memorial Park cemetery, South Hill.

George J. Vaughan
Mr. George Jackson Vaughan, 82, of Lawrenceville, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 at Community Memorial Healthcenter.
He was a retired truck driver and World War II Army veteran. He is survived by his wife Mamie Moseley Vaughan of South Hill; two daughters, Margaret Bartus of Lawrenceville and Melinda King of Baskerville; three sons, George J. Vaughan Jr. of South Hill, Glenn E. Vaughan of Bracey and Paul N. Vaughan of Alberta; a sister, Ruth Hayes of La Crosse; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted on Monday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Rescue Squad in Gasburg.
Sergeant Paul L. Robinson
Sergeant Paul L. Robinson was born June 25, 1938 to the late Ida Robinson of Norfolk.
He attended public schools in Norfolk. He served in the United States Army for 22 years.
Paul is survived by Jack, Elizabeth, Alice, Kim and Sheldon.
A memorial service was held at Brown's Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceville on Oct. 5.

Vina L. Moss Mays
Vina L. Moss Mays, daughter of the late Willie Moss and Lillie Goldsberry Moss Rice, was born July 31, 1920, in Dolphin, and died Sept. 23, 2004 at her residence in Dolphin.
She attended school in Brunswick County. At an early age she became a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Warfield. She sang in the Piney Grove Senior Choir and was a member of the Missionary Circle.
She is survived by three daughters, Odelia Gibbs of Dolphin, Corena Mays and Shirley Mays of New York; two sons, Eddie Mays (Jeromie) of Lawrenceville and Deacon Frank Mays Sr. (Mary) of Chesterfield; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Mays of Petersburg; two sisters, Ellen McGeachy of Lawrenceville and Martha Blick of Maryland; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one niece, Daphne Washington of Maryland; two nephews, Lt. Col. Thomas McGeachy of Patrick Air Force Base of Florida and Special Agent Alfred McGeachy of Woodbridge; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Sept. 28, from Piney Grove Baptist Church in Warfield with interment in the Goldsberry cemetery, Warfield.

Walter Linberg Maitland
Mr. Walter Linberg Maitland, 65, of Ebony, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004 in the W.S. Hundley Annex.
He was a retired Barker Construction Co. employee and the widower of Hazel Moody Maitland. He is survived by two daughters, Lisa D. Maitland of South Hill and Karen R. Maitland of Ebony; two sons, Kenneth W. Maitland of White Plains and Jeff T. Maitland of South Hill; four sisters, Gertrude Mayton of McKenney and Edna DeCambra, Mary and Phyllis Mailtand, all of Warfield; and six grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at Prospect United Methodist Church cemetery in Ebony. Arrangements were entrusted to Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory.
Henry C. Robertson
Henry Carroll Robertson, 69, of 202 South Street, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Mr. Robertson was born Feb. 2, 1935, in Bertie County, N.C. and was the son of the late David Hillary Robertson and Amanda Evelyn Powell Robertson.
He was a self-employed home improvement contractor, member of the Pasquotank-Providence Volunteer Fire Department, and a former member of the Bee Keeper's Association.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Jones Robertson; two sons, Henry Carroll "Hank" Robertson Jr. of Lillington, N.C. and David Keith Robertson of the home; three stepdaughters, Lisa G. Austin and her husband, Joey, of Elizabeth City, N.C., Keenen G. Broome and her husband, Chris, of Lake Gaston, N.C., and Sheila D. Grizzard of Chicago, Il.; one brother, Carlton Robertson of Edenton, N.C.; two sisters, Myrtle R. Wynne of Ahoskie, N.C., and Edna R. Joyner of Franklin; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Beale Robertson, on July 24, 1975, one sister, Margaret R. Parrish, and one brother, Wilton Robertson.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at 1 p.m. at the Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City N.C. with the Rev. Bob Madden officiating. Burial will follow in Westland Memorial Park cemetery. The family will join friends Friday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street in Elizabeth City, N.C. Members of the Pasquotank-Providence Volunteer Fire Department will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.

James Irving Ash
James "Jim" Irving Ash, 66, of Chase City, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at his residence. A native of Washington, D.C., he attended Mt. Horeb Baptist Church, was retired as an operating engineer with Consolidated Engineering and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Ash; his mother, Mary Martin Ash of Hyattsville, Md.; three daughters, Donna L. Gambino and her husband Phil of Crofton, Md., Debbie L. Harper and her husband Bob of Greensboro, N.C. and Sheri L. Neese and her husband Wilbur of Laurel, Md. Also surviving is a sister, Thurley Jean Ash of Laurel, Md., and eight grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Horeb Baptist Church by the Rev. A.C. Wells. Burial will follow in the Colley family cemetery in Chase City. The family will receive friends at the Herbert L. Farrar Funeral Home, South Hill, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial considerations may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Richard Thomas Burks
Mr. Richard Thomas Burks, age 68, of Tanglewood Shores in Bracey, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 at his residence.
He was a retired Air Force Vietnam veteran and a retired Sperry Rand computer technician. He was also a AARP "55" instructor, a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church in Bracey and a member of American Legion Post #141 in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, Jennie O. Burks; a daughter, Jeanine Burks of Norwick, England; a son, Christopher R. Burks of Norfolk, England; a brother, Don L. Burks Jr. of Bracey; a sister, Peggy B. Koury of Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory followed by cremation. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Sarah A. Hilliard
Miss Sarah A. Hilliard, 60, of Clarksville, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at her residence.
Miss Hilliard was born in Mecklenburg County, on Aug. 6, 1944 to the late Leonard and Viola Richardson Hilliard. She attended the public schools of Mecklenburg County, and was a member of Wharton Memorial Baptist Church in Nelson.
She is survived by seven sisters, Mary Harrison (Gillis) of Littleton, N.C., Rosa Newton (Frank) of Clarksville, Dorothy Hilliard of Montclair, N.J., Mattie Hilliard of South Boston, Nannie Smith (John) of Clarksville, Blanche Hilliard of Clarksville, and Lillie Terry (Eugene) of Buffalo Junction; two brothers, Leonard Hilliard (Jackie) of Corona, N.Y., and Jerry Hilliard (Mary) of Clarksville; one godson, Clarence Gregory of Buffalo Junction; one aunt, Lorraine Lane (Bishop Morris) of Richmond; and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.
Funeral services for Miss Sarah A. Hilliard will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 11, at Wharton Baptist Church in Nelson, with the Rev. James A. Hudson Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John Baptist Church cemetery in Clarksville. The family will receive friends at C.H. Harris Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 until 7 p.m.
