LUCY ELLEN PARKER
Lucy Ellen Parker, 81, died on July 28, 2011. She was born in Gates County, NC to Henry Eddie Parker and Annie Laura Lilly Parker. She had been a resident of Suffolk for 78 years, where she served as the credit manager at Angus I. Hines/Sentry Services for over 33 years.
As a longtime member of Bethlehem Christian Church and the Taylor Brittle Sunday School Class, Lucy Ellen was a devoted Christian. She was a member of the Bethlehem Senior Fellowship Club and served on the church finance committee.
Miss Parker served as president of the Suffolk Credit Women International for 3 terms.
Lucy Ellen loved many things in life, but mostly her friends and family. Whether it was delivering meals, visiting shut-ins, or babysitting, she gave of herself in so many ways. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, she enjoyed traveling and experiencing new adventures. Of her many loves, walking on the beach, gardening, and bridge were some of her favorites.
In addition to her parents, Miss Parker was predeceased by 3 brothers - Raymond Clarence Parker, Thomas Edgar Parker, James Raleigh Parker - and a sister - Annie Mary Parker Bunch.
Survivors include 1 sister - Oma Lee Parker Joyner (Bob) of Franklin - and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, July 31st at 2:00pm at Bethlehem Christian Church in Suffolk by the Revs. Reginald Warren and Wayne Gardner with burial at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory on Saturday, July 30th from 7:00pm - 8:30pm
In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting memorials be made to Bethlehem Christian Church or a favorite charity.
CHARLES E. DANIELS
Charles E. Daniels 79, passed away June 28, 2011 in Zuni, VA. Services will be held at 11:00am, July 5, 2011 at Clark Funeral Home in Hawkinsville and burial at Harrell cemetery in Dodge County.
Mr. Daniels was born in Hawkinsville, a native of Pulaski County, lived most of his life in Alamogordo, New Mexico after he retired from the US Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tommie Jump Daniels and Charles N. Daniels, brother James H. Hardy, sisters Wilmontine Wimberly and Catherine H. Gunter and daughter Patty Daniels. He is survived by his son, Charles Michael Daniels of Zuni, VA; daughter Sherrie Bruce of Bremerton, WA; sisters Lorraine D. Moore of Warner Robins, GA and Bettie Barker of Highland, NC; 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
ANDREW "JACK" HOLLAND
Andrew Jackson Holland Jr. wore many hats & went by many names. He was “Buddy” to his parents, Jack & Kathryn, as well as to his siblings and their spouses, Martha Ann & Stanley, Gary & Pat, and Larry. He was known as “Jack” to his friends and “Roller Skate” to his hunting buddies. “Daddy” was the name given by his children and their spouses, Drew & Lisa, Terry & Jess, Matthew & Rickell, Heather & Chris. To Josh, Jordan, McKenna, Kellyn, Rylan, and Brandon he was “Grandaddy.” Jack was deeply loved by his wife, Frances, and is at peace with the world today. Jack was the face of true courage. Through pain and adversity he always had a smile on his face and a kind word for all. He loved his family, friends, music, baseball, hunting, fishing, gardening and all things that a country boy would love.
He was a Past Master of McAllister Masonic Lodge 185, Somerton Hunt Club, Gates Hunt Club, Master Gardner Club, a lifetime member of Holland Volunteer Fire Department, and Sons of Confederacy, Box Elder Hunt Club and a member of Holy Neck Christian Church. He was a graduate of Ferrum College, state champion Judo brown-belt in 1967 and little league coach at Holland Athletic Association.
Jack was born November 1, 1946 and continued his journey to be with the Lord on June 10, 2011.

Mrs. Lena May Taylor Crowder
March 30, 1917 - October 14, 2003
Mrs. Lena May Crowder, age 86 of South Hill, died Monday, October 13, 2003 in a Richmond hospital. She was the widow of John Foster Crowder and is survived by her daughter and her husband Mary Taylor and Ronnie Tatum and her son and his wife Eddie and Nancy Crowder both of South Hill and her granddaughter Melissa Tatum of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Thursday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. PAUL KIRK BRADY, SR.
Paul Kirk Brady, Sr., 96, passed away June 2, 2011. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Griggs Brady and his parents Jack and Bessie Brady.
Mr. Brady was a WWII Army veteran where he served throughout Europe including in the Battle of the Bulge. He was the owner of Radio Service Co. until he retired and he also built and owned Brady's Marina. In 1959, he was one of four Suffolk men who salvaged the African Queen.
He is survived by his son, Paul Kirk Brady, Jr. and wife, Patricia C., of Richmond; his daughter, Maribeth B. Zedd and husband, Larry, of Virginia Beach; and his grandchildren, Lauren Carroll, Kathryn Brady, Brady Zedd, and Zachary Zedd.
A graveside service with military honors will be conducted Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 11 AM by the Rev. Les Ferguson at St. John's Episcopal Church cemetery, 828 Kings Highway, Suffolk, VA, 23432. MARGARET C. HORNE
Margaret Cutchin Horne, 89, a long time resident of Smithfield, died Sunday evening at Colonial Heights Health Care and Rehabilition Center where she had resided for six weeks.
She was the widow of Rev. James Waverly Horne, Jr., who served as pastor at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church in Zuni, Deer Park Baptist Church in Newport News, and Carrow Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. During each pastorate, Mrs. Horne enjoyed being a teacher and mentor to the young couples' Sunday School Class.
She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church, where services will be held at 10 A. M. Thursday, June 2, 2011, with burial to follow at Whitehead's Grove Baptist Church cemetery. R. W. Baker Funeral Home and Crematory of Suffolk is in charge.
She leaves a son, Jay Horne of Colonial Heights; two daughters, Marcia Matheson of Hartwood, Va., and Joan Cusick of Martinez, Ca.; a sister, Evelyn Drew of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Barnes, Molly Bumpas, Meg Hoffman, Whitney Matheson, Hunter Matheson, Rachel Lollar, and Kate Hancock; and four great- grandchildren.
JOYCE H. JOHNSON
Joyce Howell Johnson passed away at her home August 5, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Joyce was born in the White Oak Community of Gates Co., NC on May 30, 1931 and had ten siblings. Most of her life she resided in Suffolk, VA and retired from Planters Peanut Co. She enjoyed all sports, especially tennis, and took pride in her knowledge of the game and the players. In her younger years, she played tennis, basketball, and softball and loved the competition. Fishing or crabbing at Planters Club with family and friends were great ways for her to spend a day and she loved going to the beach. She was much loved and provided much love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslar and Sadie Howell; her brothers, Cecil Howell, Wendell Howell, Hallett Howell, and Lofton Howell; sisters, Amy Eure, Ava Edmonds, and Olivia Dew; and grandson, Steven Brenwalt.
She is survived by her children, Curtiss Johnson (Betty), Don Johnson (Jean Wheeler), Rhonda Baker (Raiford), Debbie Buffkin, Beverly Fitzgerald (Tommy Eason); her sisters, Idalia Lilley (Jesse Gray), Laura Bryant, and Faye Eure; twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Greg Clifford and his wonderful staff, Delores, Denise, and Cathy for the care and compassion they provided.
A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. by Joyce’s granddaughter, Pastor Amanda B. Smith, with entombment to follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to service time. At all other times family will receive friends at the home of Curtiss Johnson. Ronnie L. Marable
SKIPWITH - Ronnie Lewis Marable, 31, of Skipwith, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Community Memorial Health-center, South Hill.
He was born Aug. 30, 1972. He was a member of Harper's Temple Apostolic Church, Clarksville, and was employed by Lewis Tree Service, Chase City.
He is survived by his wife, Melissa George Marable; his parents, Paul B. and Mattie Smith Marable, Sr. of Skipwith; four sisters, Sharon Crawley, Vickie Marable, both of Chase City, Delores Marable of Danville and Tracey Crute of Chase City; four brothers, Arthur Boyd, Jr., Mitchell Jerome Boyd, Calvin Marable and Paul Marable, Jr., all of Chase City; paternal grandmother, Pearline Marable of Chase City; two brothers-in-law, Edward Crawley and Gary George, Jr.; one sister-in-law, Latoya Marable and a vast number of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, with Elder Vernell Harper officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home, 1304 North Main St., Chase City.
Moseley-Hare-Clore
Frances Pearson Moseley died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003. She was preceded in death by Lewis B. Moseley, Osborne H. Hare and Irvin C. Clore, Jr. Also by her daughter, Barbara Clore Royal, and her son, William Earl Clore.
She was a retired school teacher. She was able to hold her great-granddaughter, Abbie Mckay Chrisitian, born Oct. 16, 2003, and great-grandson, John Mark Spivey, Jr., born Oct. 22, 2003, before passing away.
She is survived by a brother, Robert C. Pearson; brother-in-law, Aubrey Moseley; sister-in-law, Nellie Bowen; daughter-in-law, Ruth Clore, children Teresa and Jimmy Amos, Deanna and Bruce Raynor, son Charles L. Clore, wife Betty, children Terri and Sheila; son George Irvin Clore, wife Deborah, grandchildren, Melo-dy C. Spivey and husband Mark, Karen Michelle Chris-tian and husband Poncho, Donald Ray Carroll and family, Annie Royal, great-grandchilden Addison Blake Chris-tian, Maisie Jordon Spivey, Abbie McKay Christian, John Mark Spivey Jr., Heather Amos, Jessica Amos, Kristen Raynor, other family and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Okwood cemetery, Lawrenceville. Williams Funer-al Home, 410 Windsor Ave., Lawrenceville, is in charge of arrangements.
Ronald C. Cheely
RUTHER GLEN - Ronald Claiborne Cheely, 53, of Ruther Glen, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.
He is survived by two sons, Matthew Niles Cheely of Laurel, MD and Adam Webster Cheely of Durham, NC; his parents, Ernest and Katherine Cheely; two sisters, Judy Howell of Glen Allen and Katherine Hawthorne of Gloucester; and three brothers, Mark Cheely of Lawrenceville, Scott Cheely and Robert Cheely, both of Blackstone.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, with a private burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Christian Church cemetery Fund.
Willie Crutchfield
Deacon Willie Crutchfield died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in the Brian Center, Lawrence-ville. He was a son of the late George and the late Nancy Walker Crutchfield, born May 12, 1907, in Mecklenburg County.
He was a member of Union Meherrin R.Z.U.A. Church, Brodnax, where he was the oldest deacon of the church. He attended public schools in Mecklenburg County
He was predeceased by his wife, Lottie Boxley Crutch-field, and a son, John Lewis Crutchfield.
Mr. Crutchfield was em-ployed at the Boxmill in La Crosse for many years until his retirement.
He is survived by three sons, Richard and Harold Crutchfield of Brodnax and George Crutchfield of Baltimore, MD; one daughter, Lula Mae Crutchfield of Palmer Springs; three daughters-in-law, Maude, Shirley and Nell Crutchfield; one sister, Carrie Lee Bennett of Washington, DC; one sister-in-law, Eva Crutchfield of Newport News; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous step-grands and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Union Meherrin R.Z.U.A. Church with Rev. Frazier Godfrey delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Feggins Funeral Home, 409 South Hill Ave., South Hill, was in charge of arrangements.
Tommie L. Howerton
BUFFALO JUNCTION - Tommie Lee Howerton, 79, of Newark, NJ, formerly of Buffalo Junction, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at East Orange General Hospital, East Orange, NJ.
Mr. Howerton was a son of the late Alexander and Bessie Howerton, born in Halifax County on Sept. 18, 1924. He attended Virginia Public Schools and was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church, Buffalo Junction.
He was employed as a mechanic in Newark, NJ. In 1976 he founded Tom's Auto Repairs and later established Howerton Bros. Car Spa along with his brother Sam.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Howerton of Newark, NJ; two children, Norma Maria of Manhattan, NY and Lloyd Garrieth Holmes (Marcella) of Maplewood, NJ; three grandchildren, Ra-Nae Bacon, Jason Lloyd, and Eric Thomas Holmes; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Devor Bacon; three brothers, Willie Orlander Howerton (Suthlin) of Boydton Beach, FL, William Royster Howerton (Marian) and James Samuel Howerton (Mary), all of Buffalo Junction; three sisters-in-law, Betty, Arnell and Tina; and a vast number of other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church, Buffalo Junction, with Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. C.H. Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 216 Fourth Street, Clarksville, was in charge of arrangements.
Norman Russell Bryson
October 19, 1922 - August 3, 2002
Mr. Norman Russell Bryson of Yorktown and formerly of Bracey, died Saturday, August 3, 2002 in Yorktown Convalescent Center, Yorktown, Va.
He was a WWII veteran, a retired crane operator with U. S. Steel and the widower of Leona McKeown Bryson.
Mr. Bryson is survived by his son, Dennis N. Bryson of Grafton, a brother, Donald Bryson of Lake Wells, Fl. and two Grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2;00 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Crestview Memorial Park.

George S. Chaffin
VICTORIA - George Spencer Chaffin, 79, of 95 Chaffin Lane, Victoria, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, in the W.S. Hundley Annex, South Hill.
An Eulogistic service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the All Faith Chapel of Charles Thomas Funeral Home, Kenbridge, with Rev. F. H. Bagley, Jr., eugloist. Interment was in the Chaffin Family cemetery in Victoria.
Contributions may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church in memory of George Chaffin.
Mary Hayes-Stokes
VICTORIA - Mary Hayes-Stokes, 80, of 237 Airport Road, Victoria, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, in Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill.
She is survived by her husband, James R. Stokes of Victoria; one son, A.C. Hinton of Victoria; one brother, Mike Hayes of Victoria; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A eulogistic service was held Monday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Kenbridge, with Rev. F.H. Bagley, Sr., eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Samuel L. Baskerville
Samuel Lee Baskerville, 58, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, in MCV Hospital, Richmond. He was a son of the late Colleen Logan Baskerville and the late Samuel Baskerville, born Aug. 1, 1945, in Mecklenburg County. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susie B. Sykes.
