JOHN F. PERRY
John Frederick Perry, 69, went to be with the lord February 25, 2011. He was born in Nansemond County to the late Mary Estelle and Zachariah Perry. He was predeceased by his brother Jerry Milton Perry.
John was a life long member of Liberty Spring Christian Church and was a truck driver for Perry Lumber Co.
He is survived by his son Jeffrey A Perry and wife Mary Denise of Sunbury, NC; sister Brenda Kay Davis of Suffolk; brother George Earl Perry of Chesapeake; two grand children Jeffrey Scott Perry and Lena Mariah Perry; many nieces and nephews in Richmond, Suffolk, and Northeastern NC.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Liberty Spring Christian Church, 4213 Whaleyville Blvd. by the Rev Allen Lancaster with burial in the church cemetery. AL SAUNDERS
Turpin A. 'Al'¯ Saunders, Jr., 87, passed into glory peacefully at his home, Feb. 20, 2011. He was born on Everetts Road, June 12, 1923. He was the son of the late Turpin A. and Nannie Whitley Saunders. He was the widower of Georgia C. Saunders.
He graduated from Chuckatuck High School in 1941, completed the machinist apprenticeship in the Norfolk Navy Yard, and during World War II served in the Maritime Service on Liberty Ships as an Assistant Engineer. He was a life long member of Oakland Christian Church where he served as a deacon, former superintendent of the Sunday School, and on many building committees. He was a partner at Saunders Supply Company for 64 years. He was past president of the Chuckatuck Ruitan Club with perfect attendance for 62 years. He was a charter member of the Chuckatuck Fire Department and served as Chief of the Department from 1955-1963. He was one of the organizers of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in 1965 and served on the board for many years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Richard Bennett Trust for forty-three years. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. In 1996, he and his wife, Georgia, were honored as Suffolk's First Citizens.
He is survived by his children, Mary Williams (Jesse), Ann Saunders, Paul Saunders (Pam), Douglas Saunders, all of Suffolk, and Kathy Whitten (Fred) of Richmond; his siblings, Nancy Neese and Dorothy Hackney of Richmond and Scott Saunders of Isle of Wight; his grandchildren Jess Williams, Brooke Anderson (Reeves), James Saunders (Lisa), Geoffrey Whitten, Katie Doh (Yoony), and Jay Whitten; great-grandson Cord Anderson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Oakland Christian Church in Chuckatuck. The family will receive visitors at his home Friday, February 25, 2011.

BETH A. GARBUS
Beth Ann Garbus, 48, passed away February 8, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital. She is the daughter of the late Irvin and Lula Garbus.
Beth was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was a loving mother, a wonderful talkative sister, and a true and loyal friend to everyone.
Survivors include her daughter, Amber C. Garbus; brothers, Hal Garbus and wife Donna of Smithfield, Brad Garbus of Suffolk and his life partner, Ray Durham.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 4:00 pm at Liberty Baptist Church, 116 Romans Road, Suffolk, VA, 23434 by the Rev. Larry Davis. GLADYS ELEY PATTERSON
Gladys Elizabeth Eley Patterson, 62, suddenly passed at her residence in Isle of Wight. She was the daughter of the late Margaret Louise and William Richardson Eley, Sr, and was predeceased by a brother Frederick N. Eley.
Gladys graduated from Smithfield High School, JanMar Beauty Academy and Hicks Beauty Academy. Prior to retirement she managed Regis Salon. She was an avid gardener and hobby photographer, who loved her husband, family and pets Tissy, Odie, and Dinky dearly.
She is survived by her husband George Smith Patterson III, brother William Richardson Eley, Jr. and wife Ann; sisters Peggy and Charles Roff of Smithfield, VA, and Mary Catherine Foster of Windsor, VA; step-children Diane Bollinger, Richard Patterson and Andrea Beam; eight grand children, two great grandchildren, nieces and nephews that loved her dearly.

CLARENCE W. BURTON
Clarence William Burton, 89, passed away at his residence on February 4, 2011. He was the son of the late Leslie T. and Flossie Burton and the widower of the late Dorothy Anne H. Burton.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Clarence served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II. He was a charter member of the Nansemond Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad. He worked for the City of Suffolk for 30 years as a Codes Inspector.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine B. Ward; son, Clarence W. Burton, Jr. and wife Diana of Spotsylvania, VA; grandchildren, Douglas Ward, Lee Anne Ward, Jonathan Burton, and Hayley Burton.

Lilley Woodbury Spencer, 91, passed away January 30, 2011, in NJ. Born April 4, 1919 in Gates County, NC, she lived most of her life in Virginia, however, she resided in Virginia Beach for 37 years before moving to NJ in 2006.
Mrs. Spencer was the daughter of the late Robert R. Howell and Mary Frances Howell, widow of Charles Edward Spencer. She is survived by two daughters, Peggy Canter(husband Charles) of IN and Linda Sturm(husband Stephen) of NJ.; four grandchildren, Douglas Carey, wife Sandy of TN, Wayne Carey(wife Tracie) of TN., Sheila Renee Sturm of NJ., Holly Richter(husband Brian) of NJ., three great grandchildren, Dylan and Cammy Richter of NJ., David Carey of TN.; four surviving sisters, Annie Mary Brinkley of VA., Alease Neblett of VA., Frances Crusenberry(husband Billy) of FL., Margaret Roundtree of VA.

Mr. Alfred Monroe 'Butch' Wright, 53, of White Plains, died June 24, 2003 in Halifax-Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was a former teacher at Brunswick Senior High School. He is survived by his wife Kathryn B. Wright, a daughter Joanna Wright and a son Brian Wright all of the home, his parents Earl and Myrta Wright of Brodnax, his sister Paula Wright of Hyattsville, MD, three brothers; Leonard Earl Wright of Pauline SC, Michael R. Wright of Mechanicsville and H. Scott Wright of Greensboro, NC. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Canaan cemetery, Brodnax. Michael Matthew McClune, 57, passed away at his residence January 18, 2011. He was the son of Mac McClune of Pembroke, MA and the late Irene A. McClune. Born in North Carolina, he was a construction foreman.
Besides his father, he is survived by his sons, Andrew S. Eby of Honolulu, HI, and John Driver of Suffolk, their mother, Kimberly Eby Jarvis of Suffolk; brothers, Barry and wife Jennifer, Jeff and wife Joann, Greg, and David; nephews, Mark McClune, Aiden McClune, Mathew McClune, Mitchell McClune; and niece, Mecalia McClune.

Barbara Truitt Klages, 84, died August 16, 2011 in her home.
Born in Suffolk, VA she was the daughter of the late George and Selester Truitt and she was the widow of James Edward Klages and they had been married
for 53 years. She was retired from Pond Brothers Peanut Company. She was a member of Magnolia UMC Church where she taught Sunday school for 49 years. Barbara received the Outstanding Service for Christ for Leaders of the Spring Season from the Leadership Development team at Magnolia UMC on June 26, 2011. She also served as choir director, pianist, and organist for many years at Bethlehem Christian Church and sang in the choir at Magnolia UMC.
Survivors include her children Sherry K. Roberts and husband Ed and Deborah K. Carr. Grandchildren Scott Carr, Rhee’ Carr, Shannon Watkins, Karen and Courtney Roberts; and great grandson Jayden Brown.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Cedar Hill cemetery on Thursday, August, 18, 2011 by Pastor D. V. Madison. Mrs. Lucy Williams Spence, age 90 of La Crosse, died Friday, August 9, 2002 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was the widow of Gladys Steven Spence and is survived by 4 daughters Maude Thomas, Ann Smith and Dean Smith all of La Crosse and Mary Craven of Blackstone; two sons Tom Spence of La Crosse and James Spence of South Hill; three sisters Dorma Moore of Lawrenceville, Mary Cannon of White Plains and Lorena Edwards of Valentine; four brothers George and Purdy Williams both of Brodnax, Robert Williams of Richmond and Jim Williams of Rocky Mount, NC; a daughter-in-law Norma Spence of La Crosse; eighteen grandchildren, fourty one great grandchildren and thirteen great great grandchildren. Mary Anne Bradshaw Burgess, 72, passed away July 25, 2011 in her home.
She was a retired accountant and a member of Liberty Springs Christian Church. She was the daughter of the late Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth Bradshaw. She was also predeceased by her brother, Nathaniel H. Bradshaw, Jr. and sister, Patsy B. Mann.
Mrs. Burgess is survived by her husband, Dempse B. Burgess, Jr., children, Donald R. Burgess and wife Mary Romaniello of Chesapeake, Donna Burgess Johnson and husband Kenneth “Beck” of Virginia Beach, Sharon B. Presson of Suffolk, Karen B. Harrell and husband Clarence “Jr.” of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., grandchildren, James Eric Presson, Kristi Holland, Jessica Harrell, Katie Holland, Megan Presson, sisters, Peggy B. She was a volunteer at both CMH Community Hospice and the Concord Baptist Association. She was the widow of Douglas W. Callis and is survived by four daughters Rhina Jones of Bracey, Tamara Weston of Mechanicsville, Bonnie Graham of Dublin and Toni Lambert of Brodnax; two sister-in-laws Delores Callis of South Hill and Dot Randall of Baton Rouge, LA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Gertrude Pritchett George, 88, of Bracey, died Saturday October 11, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Thomas A. and Florence Gibson Pritchett and the widow of Rufus B. George. She was a retired teacher's aid with Mecklenburg Co. Public Schools and a active member and Sunday School Teacher at Kingswood United Methodist Church .
Mrs. George is survived by her four daughters and their husbands, Nadine and Jack Clary of Bracey, Gladys and John Wells of Victoria, Betty Ann and Gene Poythress of La Crosse and Faye and Warren Matthews of Bracey, her son and his wife, 'Benny' and Judy George of South Hill, her brother Charles R. 'Charlie' Pritchett of Bracey, 16 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P. M. in Kingswood United Methodist Church, Bracey, with interment in the church cemetery.

LETHA A. HUNEYCUTT
Huneycutt, Letha Ann Burris, age 86, of Suffolk went to be with the Lord on June 11, 2011. Born on October 18, 1924, in Montgomery County, NC, she was the daughter of the late W. Clyde and Flonnie Wilhoit Burris. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Jerrell G. Huneycutt; brothers Roy L. Burris and W. Marvin Burris, both of Stanly County, NC.
Mrs. Huneycutt was a member of West Suffolk Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA. She lived her life in devotion to her family, her church, and her community. In 1967, she and Mrs. Edna Blough began an afterschool child evangelism class, the Good News Bible Club. From this outreach, Mr. and Mrs. Huneycutt joined with others to form the Community Baptist Church, which continues today in Suffolk, VA. Letha is known to her friends and loved ones for her love of gardening and flowers and for her handcrafts, including quilts, crochet work, and woodworking.
She is survived by four sons and their wives, Grant and Betty Huneycutt of Moneta, Vinson and Betty Huneycutt of Franklin, Fairren and Donna Huneycutt of Suffolk, and Ivan and Lynn Huneycutt of Suffolk; one daughter and her husband, Cindy and Robb Koether of Farmville; niece, Betty Sue Burris of Chuckatuck; seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren and many other relatives and loved ones.
A funeral service will be held at Community Baptist Church in Suffolk at 1 PM on Wednesday June 15, 2011with interment following at the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans cemetery in Suffolk, VA. Family visitation will be Tuesday, June 14, 2011 from 7 to 8 PM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mrs. Ruby McCauley Griffith, age 75 of Petersburg and formerly of South Hill, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002. She was the widow of Carlton Lewis Griffith, Jr. and is survived by a sister Gertrude McCartney of Waynesboro, an adopted son Roy Romesburg of Newport News, several nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews including Tina Eubank of Sutherland. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Saturday at Oakwood cemetery in South Hill. Judith Ann Turner, 53, passed away in her residence in Suffolk.
Born in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Katherine Cralle. She was predeceased by her son, Christopher R. Turner and a nephew, Matthew B. Cralle. Judith was a graduate of Nansemond Suffolk Academy, Suffolk Beauty Academy, and Kees Business College. She was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Ronald O. Turner, Sr.; son, Ronald O. Turner, Jr.; brother, H.B. Cralle, III of Suffolk; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ray and Sarah Hampton of Suffolk; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Spencer, Sarah, Katie, Jody, Jeff, and Bryan.
