J. RUDOLPH CARTER
James Rudolph Carter, 80, went to be with the lord February 22, 2011. He was born in Nansemond County to the late Grace and James M. Carter. He was predeceased by his brother Randy L. Carter.
Rudolph was retired from the Ford Motor Company and from the Suffolk City Schools. He was a member of Trinity Christian Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the TPA Association.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy R. Carter; son, Wayne Carter and wife Rose of Southern Shores, NC; grandchildren, Jon Carter and wife Nikki of Waipahu, HI, and Heather C. and husband Dustin Daniels of Southern Shores, NC; great grand daughter, Breeze N. Daniels; a great grand son on the way; several nieces and nephews with one special niece, Cindy Luter; and sister-in-law, Nancy Carter.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk by the Rev. Byron McCreary, Rev. Dustin Daniels, Rev. Dolan Talbert, and Rev. Bert Pearce with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, February 25, 2011 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

FRANCES (DEDE) JOHNSON
Frances (Dede) Rhodes Hutter Johnson, 65, died February 20 at the home of her daughter and care giver, Jennifer Blythe, in Driver (Suffolk), Va. She was born on May 6. 1945 to Jim and Polly Hutter.
She was predeceased by her husband Ron of Franklin, OH and her parents. Left to cherish her memory, are daughter Jennifer, her husband Rob, and grandsons Kyle and Justin, and sons Ronnie Johnson and Jamie Johnson; granddaughters Lauren and Emma Johnson; brother Jimmy and his wife Judy of Williamsburg: and sisters, Laura and her husband Melvin of Lancaster, PA, and Mary and her husband Ralph of Houston, TX. She will also be missed by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Born in Atlanta, GA, Dede moved to Lynchburg as a young girl. She graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and Stratford College in Danville. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lynchburg before moving to Virginia Beach as a young adult.
In accordance with her wishes, she will be cremated, followed by a private Memorial Service at 'The Beach'.
MARGARET E. PARKS
Margaret E. Parks, 92, passed away February 16, 2011 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Born in New York, she was the daughter of the late Alice and Frank Hill. She was the widow of Floyd L. Parks and they were married
November 25, 1939. Margaret was a member and organist of Smithville Baptist and Park Methodist in Pulaski, NY and a member of Smithville and Pulaski Grange. Margaret was a member of the Auxiliary of Smithville Fire Department and she played the piano for the Al's Pals Band. Margaret worked for Madonna Home and Jefferson County in the Social Services Department.
Survivors include her sons, William Parks of Windsor, VA, Allan Parks and wife, Trudy, of Fairport, NY; daughter, Carolyn; sister, Beverly Champlin of Watertown, NY; ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Park Methodist Church in Pulaski, NY with burial following at Roberts Corners cemetery in New York. MARGARET B. WILLIAMS
Margaret B. Williams, 90, died February 5, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Evelyn Bagley. After her mother's death her grandmother, Maggie French Lewis raised her.
Mrs. Williams was a former teacher. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church.
She is survived by her loving husband Charles 'Red' Williams. A daughter Billie Boole Edwards and her husband Rod of Windsor. Granddaughter Kimberly Brinkley and husband Bryan. Grandson, Christopher Newton and wife Amy. Great granddaughters Meghan Brinkley and Meadow Newton. Billie's husband Rod Edwards children Ronda Savel and husband Bob, Wendy Newman, Todd Edwards and wife Wendy and grandchildren Rachael and April Savel, Nicholas Newman and Jennifer and Charles Edwards. Her husband's children, Donna Schenk and husband Ronnie of Suffolk. Ronnie Williams and wife Jo of Cummings, Georgia. Grandchildren, Brian Schenk and wife Dawn and Arran Schenk. Close family friend Jeanette Williams and friends of the staff at Lake Prince Woods.
A graveside service will be conducted at the Forest Lawn cemetery, 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505 on February 9, 2011 at 11:00 AM. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM in the Portsmouth Center of Lake Prince Woods by the Rev. Michael Halley and Rev. Dr. Woodie Rea. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Karen Menke, 48, died February 2, 2011. She was the daughter of Patricia Ann and Johnny Albert Gillitzer.
She is survived by her husband Vernon Douglas Menke.

BERNICE ELLIS FISHER
Bernice Ellis Fisher, 88, died January 28, 2011. A native of Southampton, Co. she was a daughter of the late Sarah B. and Willie B. Ellis and the widow of John Lawrence Fisher. After marrying she spent 40 years moving wherever Norfolk-Southern RR sent her husband in the eastern and southern USA. She accepted these and all of lives challenges without complaint. She loved being with family, friends and preparing wonderful meals for their enjoyment. They retired to Courtland in 1978. She was an active member of Courtland Baptist Church and was an avid bridge player. For the past 5-1/2 years she has been a resident of Nansemond Point and Lake Prince Nursing Home.
Survivors include five sons; John L. Fisher, Jr. (Virginia Dare) of Suffolk, Dr. C. Ellis Fisher (Meg) of Gastonia, NC, George Wayne Fisher (Irene) of Newbern, NC, William Lee Fisher (Barbara) of Dothan, AL, Robert Fox Fisher (Wanda) of Belews Creek, NC; one sister, Margaret Grissom of Courtland; six grandchildren, Dr. Maxwell Fisher (Meredith), Megan Flanagan (Brian), Jason Fisher, Sarah Elizabeth Arthur (Jason), Jay Fisher (Robin), Jonathan Fisher(Macy) and seven great grandchildren.

HARVEY E. JEWELL
Harvey E. Jewell passed away January 26, 2011. He was born May 8, 1923 in Gillett, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 19th and Pacific Avenue on Tuesday, February 2, 2011 at 4 PM.
JOHN R. DIXON IIII
John Raymond Dixon, III, 78, died January 20, 2011 after a long fight with cancer at his residence in Virginia Beach.
Born in Nansemond County, John was the son of the late Ruth Holland Dixon and John Raymond Dixon, Jr. of Eclipse, VA. J.R. is predeceased by his half-brother, Henry Carlton Carter. He attended Crittenden Elementary School and Chuckatuck High School. He is an alumnus of Virginia Tech., and went to Indiana University, Bloomington, IN for graduate school.
J.R.'s career started in the United States Army, where in 1953 he worked for the US Army Security Agency. He is a veteran of the Korean War. In 1956 he worked for the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. He attended Officer Training for Lincoln Nation Bank in 1957, and then worked at Farmers Bank of Nansemond, First Federal Savings and Loan in Suffolk. J.R. served on the Advisory Board of Virginia National Bank in Suffolk. From 1962 to 1982 J.R. was the President and Chairman of the Board for First Savings in Suffolk. He was a founding Director and Chairman of the Board of Home Guaranity Insurance Co., Inc. He also worked at D.B. Frye and Associate, Pomoco Auto Group, and Gold Key Resorts of Virginia Beach.
J.R. was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Suffolk, VA where he served as Senior Warden, and the director of Episcopal Young Churchmen for 10 years. He was also a member of James River Community Church in Eclipse, VA. J.R. was the past president of the Suffolk Lion's Club and the Suffolk Retail Merchants Association. He was a past member of the Suffolk Jaycees; he was a past master and 50 year veteran member of Nansemond Masonic Lodge 77. J.R. served as a member and Chairman for the Nansemond City School Board for 7 years, and was the Chairman of Region B of Virginia School Board Association. J. R. also served on the Hampton Roads Educational TV Association and the Old Dominion Area Council Boy Scouts of America. In 1968 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Suffolk Nansemond Jaycees, and in 1969 was awarded the Outstanding Young Men of America award.
Survivors include his loving wife, Carolyn Spires White Dixon; son, John R. Dixon, IV, of Suffolk, VA; daughters, Nancy Dixon Turner, of Richmond, VA, Maryann Dixon Boho, of Providence Forge, VA; step-daughter, Ginger Lynn White, of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Elizabeth Virtley Dixon, Sara Ruth Dixon, Sallie Penn Turner, Taylor Turner, IV, Zachary Turner, and Nancy Ruth Turner; sister, Emily Dixon Bandlow Hood, of Smithfield, VA; niece, Bernadette Bandlow Umbenhaur, of Smithfield, VA, Lenora Ann Carter, of Hampton, VA; nephews, Bradford Richard Bandlow, of Key West, FL, Henry Carter, Jr., of New York.

PATRICIA HOWELL MAYS
Patricia Howell Mays, 67, died January 18, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital.
Born in Newport News, VA, she was the daughter of the late Ray T. and Margaret L. Howell. She was a medical records secretary at Sentara Careplex Hospital and was a charter member of Liberty Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA.
Patricia is survived by her husband, Ray F. Mays; daughter, Stephanie Mays of Topping, VA; son, Timothy R. Mays of Portsmouth, VA; brothers, Ray T. Howell, Jr. of Poquoson, VA, and Richard R. Howell of Suffolk; along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 11:00 am in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, by the Rev. Jamey Stuart and Rev. Byron McCreary with burial at Newman Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday, January 20 from 6 to 8:00 pm. CONSTANCE P. BIRDSONG
Constance P. Birdsong passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 in Whitestone, Virginia. She was born in Franklin, Virginia June 24, 1925. Over her active lifetime and career Connie lived in both Whitestone Virginia and Stephenville, Texas.
During her years in Stephenville, Texas, Connie was active in many civic and church related activities. She co-founded the Alcohol and Drug Intervention Council now known as the S.T.A.R. Council of Substance Abuse. Connie also chaired the Stephenville Chamber of Commerce Cultural Affairs Committee and was the recipient of the Chambers Outstanding Merit Award for Cultural Affairs in 1979. In 1982, she received the Ambassador At Large Award.
The cofounder of the Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council, Inc. Connie served as the councils first president for four years and served on the Board of Directors for six years. Connie and Tom Birdsong maintained a life dedication to Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council, Inc.
Connies lifetime dedication to the arts led to her leadership role as a board member for the Texas Arts Council for six years, serving her last two years as Chairman of the Board. She and her husband, Tom were founding members of the Texas 200 Club for achievements in the arts, in their community, and the great state of Texas.
Connie and Tom made possible a new Obstetrical Department for Harris Methodist Hospital in Stephenville known as The Birdsong Womens Center.
In 2009, Connie was also given The Mary Mildred Sullivan Award by Randolph Macon College for her philanthropic work. The award is given to those who possess to an extraordinary degree a spirit of helpfulness and an awareness of the beauty and value of the intangible elements of life.
Connie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Thomas H. Birdsong, III; her sister, Emory Ann Peters of Grandy, North Carolina; her sons, Elmer A. Bradshaw (Tres) and his wife, Brenda Ward Bradshaw of Greenville, South Carolina, Richard H. Bradshaw of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Thomas Henry Birdsong, IV (Hank) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Warren Lee Birdsong and his wife Penny Howell Birdsong and their two children Japeth Saecker and Christi Saecker Johnson from Smithfield, Virginia; her daughter Virginia Corinne Birdsong Winburn and her husband William A. Winburn, IV and their son Thomas Mills Winburn from Alexandria, Virginia.
Graveside services will be held at Cedar Hill cemetery on Saturday, August 20th at 11:30am. The Reverend Dr. Woodie Rae, Director of Spiritual Life at Lake Prince Woods will officiate.

AUBREY P. BARNES
Aubrey Payne Barnes, 64, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family August 2, 2011 in Suffolk. He was the husband of Donna C. Barnes and the son of the late Nellie and William Crowder Barnes. He was a wonderful husband, dad, uncle, brother, and friend and had a passion for golf and fishing, but more importantly, his passion for his children and grandchildren.
Aubrey was a member of First Baptist Church in Suffolk. His command was Naval facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic in Norfolk. He was a Senior Staff Appraiser and served in the Army Reserves. He had the opportunity to travel extensively while working and traveled to some places like: Iceland, Saudi Arabia, and Haiti. He also had the opportunity to assist in finding housing for the military personnel during Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his daughters, Laurie L. Barnes of Franklin, Donna Maria Seabolt and husband, Doug, of Suffolk, Melissa Ann Boyce and husband, Travis, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Melissann and Forrest Boyce; sister, Barbara Nelms of Washington, NC; brother, William C. Bill Barnes, Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Suffolk; mother and father-in-law, Ellen and David D. Francis; sister-in-laws, Jeanie Jones, Judith Rhodes and husband, Durwood, Ann Bauman and husband, Col. Mitchel Bauman, Mary Anderson and husband, Marshall; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends.

ELIZABETH B. WILSON
Elizabeth Burroughs Wilson, 80, passed away peacefully June 8, 2011 in her home. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Daisy Burroughs.
She was the loving wife of Leslie R. Wilson, Jr. for over 61 wonderful years together. Elizabeth retired from Chesapeake Public School System and was active in the PTA. She was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church on Providence Road in Chesapeake where she was a member of the choir. She was active with the Suffolk Electoral Board and was also active in the Greenbrier Circle of CHKD, Suffolk Quilters Guild and other charity organizations on the local and regional level.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her sons, Leslie Wilson, III and wife Janice, Kenneth Wilson and wife Cindy, Steven Wilson and wife Nancy, Larry Wilson and wife Jerri; daughter-in-law, Karen Wilson; brothers, Charles Burroughs, Alan Burroughs; sisters, Catherine Smith, and Francis Joan Leonhardt; grandchildren, Leslie Wilson, IV, Christopher Wilson, and Gabe Wilson; and great-grandchild, Bradley Wilson.

PAMELA M. TURNER
Pamela M. Turner, 78, of Suffolk, VA passed away Sunday May 29, 2011 at her beloved Shibui Ni Farm. Born in Petersfield, England she came to this country in 1970 when she married
Dr. Thomas Turner. As a child Mrs. Turner grew up fox hunting and galloping steeple chase horses and that passion continued throughout her life. She became enamoured with the unique character, versatility, and athletic ability of Arabian breed of horse and developed a breeding program to promote the Arabian as a sport horse. Always seeing the bigger picture, she founded and was president of the Arabian Sport Horse Association. In addition Mrs. Turner remained steadfast in her knowledge and tireless dedication to encouraging the art of true classical horsemanship.
Mrs. Turner's other passion was her extraordinary English garden which she meticulously tended on her farm. She will be remembered by all who knew her as a witty, determined, and loving friend.
Mrs. Turner was predeceased by her husband Dr. Thomas Turner of 40 years, her brother Gerald Miller, and her parents Harold and Elsie Miller. She is survived by her brother Robert Miller in England and several nieces and nephews.

Jessie Mae Carr, 85, passed away May 10, 2011 in Sentara Obici Hospital.
Born in Edenton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Carrol W. and Eula Jordan. She was predeceased by her husband, David H. Carr; brother, Carol W. Jordan, Jr.; sister, Ima Jean Rawls.
Survivors include her son, Floyd Bennett and wife, Ellen, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Paula Jodun and husband, Glenn, of Suffolk, Cheryl Bennett; great grandchildren, Paul Jodun and Glenn Jodun; sister, Doris Howell and husband, Jarvis, of Suffolk; brothers, Odel Jordan and wife, Anne, of Chesapeake, and Sammy and wife, Judy, of Suffolk.

LAWRENCE M. WATSON
Lawrence M. Watson, 76, died May 7, 2011. A native of Worcester, MA he was the son of the late Eileen A. Keeney and Walter C. Watson. He was predeceased by a son Robert (Bobby) Watson and a brother Walter P. Watson. He served in the Navy from 1954 to 1976 and retired as an Aviation Ordinance Man Senior Chief Petty Officer. Lawrence retired from Naval Aviation Depot in 1996. He was a member of the American Legion, Fleet Reserve Association Post 40 and the Briar Patch Hunt Club.
Survivors include his wife, Carol G. Watson, two daughters, Margaret(Peggy) Davis and Linda Watson Glenum and husband Donald; two sons, Michael L. Watson and wife Donna and Kurt Watson and wife Debra; two sisters, Margaret Amiot and husband Joseph and Eileen Alex; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.
