JOHN R. BABB, SR.
John Rudolph Babb, Sr., 78, died April 20, 2011 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA. He was the widower of Lakie Morris Babb; and was the son of the late Bill A. and Margaret D. Babb. Mr. Babb was also predeceased by his son, James N. Babb; and his brother, Tilson Babb.
Mr. Babb was a member of the Local Union 540 and served two years in the Army.
Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Hardy and husband, Kevin of York, PA; son, John R. Babb, Jr. and wife Kimberly of Suffolk; grandchildren, Jamie Woodington, Brian Woodington, Danielle Hardy, John A. Babb, Avery N. Babb, Bishop T. Babb, Austin Harris, Logan Harris, and Gage Pierce; sister, Margaret Trew and husband Bruce of Franklin.

ALAN RAY MCCOY
Alan Ray McCoy, 67, fought an amazing fight with brain cancer and went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2011. He was the son of the late Raymond W. and Margaret Brooks McCoy.
Alan was born on April 20, 1943. After graduating from Whaleyville High School, Alan worked for Union Camp Paper Mill in Franklin, Virginia for 35 years. Following his retirement he consulted for Leripa Paper Tech.
Alan was an avid car enthusiast and built and re-built several early model Chevrolets. He was also an active member of the Suffolk Rod and Muscle Car Club and a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. With their love of the outdoors, Alan and his wife Mitzi built their dream home on Lake Speight. It is here they made many happy memories with their beloved pets: Maggie, Dakota, and Petunia.
Alan is survived by his wife, Mitzi Austin McCoy; his sons Kenneth McCoy and spouse, Nicole, and Alan McCoy and spouse, Shelly; his grandchildren Caitlin Brook and Noel Constance McCoy and Jacob, Caleb, Katie, and Conner McCoy; and a host of family and friends.
The family is very appreciative of all the shared love, support and prayers. Friends are welcomed at the home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 385 Turlington Road, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 3pm.

PAUL D. HOLLOMON
Paul Davis Hollomon, 65, went to be with the lord April 14, 2011. He was born in Norfolk to the late Genevieve and Joseph D. Hollomon.
Paul was a truck driver, a life member of Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and Suffolk Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; four daughters, Michelle Virginia Hollomon, Gabrielle Josephine Hollomon, Danielle Elizabeth Hollomon, and Christelle Genevieve Hollomon; sister-in-law Shirley B. Arthur and family; brother-in-law John Byrum, Jr. and family.
A funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 12:30 PM in Suffolk Church of God, 205 Kilby Ave, Suffolk by the Rev. Arthur Lee Harris with burial in Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m.

ELEANOR S. BROOKS GREGORY
Eleanor Smith Brooks Gregory was born June 25, 1922 in Fireco, West Va. and moved to Suffolk in 1959 where she made her home. She was predeceased by her husbands; Robert M. Brooks, Sr., and Eugene Gregory and a son; Eric Paul Brooks.
Eleanor retired from Obici Hospital as a nursing aide in the delivery and nursery, and once again from the Main Street Methodist Church Day Care where she was a day care worker in the infant room. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and the McLemore Bible Class.
She is survived by two sons; Grover E. Brooks (wife-Betty) of Edenton N.C, Robert M. Brooks, Jr. (wife-Jeanne) of Suffolk, daughter-in-law Annette Brooks, two sisters; Patty G. Kent of Charleston, WV, and Marlene Perdue of Mason OH, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, and many stray pets that she so fondly adopted and cared for.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday April 16, 2011 at 11:00 am in Main Street United Methodist Church by Rev. Robert J. FLOYD E. WILKINS, SR.
Floyd Elliotte Wilkins, Sr., 72, passed away October 26, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family. Born is Southampton Co., VA, he was the son of the late Lafayette T. and Gurney Wilkins, Sr. He was predeceased by his daughter, Melinda Kaye Wilkins.
Floyd was a machine operator with Union Camp and owned and operated Floyd E Wilkins, General Contracting for 30 years. He was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. He was a member of the Joyce Ann Harrell Sunday School Class and the Men’s Fellowship.
Survivors include his loving wife, Patricia Glover Wilkins; son, Floyd E. Wilkins, Jr. of Suffolk; daughter, Susan Wilkins-Piland of Suffolk; grandchildren, Lauren Ashley, Elliotte Elizabeth, and Thomas Blake Wilkins, and Barrett Elliotte and Reagan Elisabeth Piland; brothers, Lafayette T. Wilkins and wife, Martha, and Robert M. Wilkins.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Bethlehem Christian Church by the Rev. Reginald Warren and Rev. Wayne Gardner with burial at Holly Lawn cemetery. WILLIAM MARTIN CONNOLLY
William Martin Connolly, 59, died August 18, 2011 in his home.
Mr. Connolly was the son of the late Paul and Mary Connolly. He was employed with B & B Services as a general contractor.
Survivors include his wife Patricia G. Connolly. Daughters Catherine Mallet of Portsmouth, VA, Amanda Jones of Virginia Beach, VA and Sarah Connolly of Windsor, VA; son Chris Connolly of Suffolk, VA and three brothers and four sisters.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM by the Rev. Father Daniel Ahern at R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA 23434. HYLA J. BRINKLEY
Hyla Joyner Brinkley, 91, died August 20, 2011 at East Pavilion Nursing Home, Franklin, VA. She was born in Isle of Wight County to James B. and Carrie Joyner and was the widow of Joe T. Brinkley, Sr. of Suffolk. Mrs. Brinkley was retired from Peoples Drug Store and was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons: Joe T. Brinkley, Jr., of Suffolk, and James B. Brinkley and wife Susan of Spartanburg, S.C; one brother Charles S. Joyner of Richmond; 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by three sisters: Marian J. Turner, Gene J. Johnson, and Ann J. Holland.
The funeral will be held at Mt. Carmel Christian Church, Walters, Virginia by Rev. Jay Gunn at 2:00 PM Wednesday August 24, 2011. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A visitation will immediately follow at The Village at Woods Edge, 1401 N. High Street, Franklin, Virginia.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Daniel K. Peak, Jr., and the staff of The Village of Woods Edge and East Pavilion Nursing Home for all the loving care she has received during the last 9 years. Also, to her cousin Margaret Doss for her continuing friendship and visits.

BUCK KOZAK
Melvin Joseph “Buck” Kozak, 82, peacefully passed away August 29, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 22, 1929 in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Suffolk High School in 1949 and then attended the University of Richmond on a football scholarship. Buck left school early to enroll in the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean War. He married
Eunice Forehand on October 9, 1955. Buck and Eunice lived in Suffolk until 1970 where Buck was a salesman for the Suffolk Haynes Furniture Store. They then moved their family to Chesapeake and he continued to work for Haynes in both Newport News and Virginia Beach for a total of over 40 years.
Buck is predeceased by his loving parents, George and Helen Kozak. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eunice Forehand Kozak, along with his three children, Warren Kozak and wife Mary Beth, Martha Benson, and Barry Kozak and wife Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Jessica Yocum, John Benson, Holly Kozak and Morgan Kozak; one great-grandchild, Evie Yocum; and a brother, Norman Kozak and wife Lil.
Buck devoted his life to his wife and children and was a special “Pop” to his grandchildren and great grandchild. He will be greatly missed by them all.

ROBERT W. TURNER
Robert W. Turner, 80, of Portsmouth, passed away August 22, 2011 in Chesapeake. He was the son of the late Maris Virginia “BeBe” Turner and Rubert Whitfield Turner.
Bob studied English at William and Mary and studied voice with opera singer Mildred Allen and Cornelius Reid in New York. Bob owned a successful private voice studio in Portsmouth and taught hundreds of students. He also taught voice at Christopher Newport University and at The Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Bob served God as Minister of Music at many churches, such as Woodland Heights Baptist Church, Craddock Baptist Church, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and Memorial United Methodist Church. He also previously worked for many years at Birtcherd’s Dairy in Norfolk and sang professionally at Court Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth. He influenced countless singers in the Tidewater area with proper vocal technique and his gift of encouragement, and influenced many others with his boundless optimism and perpetual sense of humor.
Survivors include his sister Betty Grace Doumar and her husband Albert Doumar; two nephews, one niece, two great nieces, and five great nephews. His loss is also being felt by countless other extended family members, very close friends, and kind caregivers. Family and friends would like to thank Ronda Woods for all her loving care of Bob these past few years.
A memorial concert service will be held at Craddock Baptist Church in Portsmouth on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 4:00 PM.

KAREN M. SMIDT
Karen Marie Smidt, 42, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on August 30, 2011 at the University of North Caroline Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. She was the daughter of Arthur and Katherine Maguire of Toms River, NJ and the wife of Daniel L. Smidt.
Born in New York, Karen worked as a Human Resource Assistant for the Department of the Navy.
Besides her husband and parents, she leaves behind her loving children, Ryan Smidt and Megan Smidt; her sister, Ellen Mary Danyo and husband, Mark, of Ane Beach, NY; brother, William Maguire and wife, Kimberly, of Beach Wood, NJ; mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Bergan and husband, Wayne, of Milan, MN; father-in-law, Larry Smidt of Huron, SD; several nieces nephews; and extended family and friends.

JOHN T. BUNCH
John Thomas Bunch, 69, died August 31, 2011. He was the son of the late John and Carrie Bunch. He also was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers and his lifelong partner Gloria Ann Silverthorne.
He is survived by three sisters Annie Pearl Admire of Suffolk, VA, Mary Elizabeth Wyatt of Timberville, VA and Laura Lane of Fayetteville, NC; one brother William Nathaniel “Nat” Bunch of Suffolk, VA; thirty nieces and nephews; and one brother-in-law John Henry Duck and sister-in-law Florence Stowell both of Suffolk, VA.
Visitation will be held Friday September 2, 2011 from 1:00 – 2:00 PM at R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA followed by a graveside service at 3:00 PM at Holly Lawn cemetery by the Rev. Stewart McCarter.
MARGARET S. DASHIELL
Margaret Saunders Dashiell, of Lake Prince Woods, passed away at sundown on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 with her beloved daughters by her side. She was born February 18, 1924 in Suffolk to the late Richard Ernest Saunders and Francis Louise Lipscomb.
She was the widow of Thomas Ashby Dashiell, Jr. and is survived by her daughters, Francis Dashiell Slough of Virginia Beach and Margaret Ashby Dashiell of New Orleans, LA, and her granddaughter, Nadia Dashiell Wetzel of Chicago, IL.
Margaret was a graduate of Suffolk High School, where she was selected as “Miss Suffolk” to represent the city in the Queen’s Court at the National Peanut Exposition. She attended Randolph Macon Women’s College and was selected as May Queen in 1946. Margaret returned to Suffolk High School to teach Latin and English. She enjoyed teaching and was loved by her students, who affectionately called her “Mrs. Grit.”
Margaret, a true fashionable Southern lady, enjoyed playing bridge and was involved in many social organizations in Suffolk. She and her husband were avid travelers, and he was the true love of her life.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to her many caregivers at Lake Prince Woods, Home Instead Senior Care, and Odyssey Hospice. The family is indebted to them for providing a cheerful, caring environment during her struggle with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday, September 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 213 N. Main Street, Suffolk, by the Rev. Keith Emerson. Linda Lou Jay Causey DuBose, 70, passed away September 26, 2011 at her home. Born in Atwood, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Paul Jay and Lena Cripe. She formally worked at Fresh Pride where she was affectionately known as Miss Linda.
Survivors include her daughters, Rhonda Robison and husband, Robbi, of Gaston, SC, Lisa Brazzale and husband, Erik, of Newport News, VA; sons, Phillip Causey and wife, Karen, of Franklin, Jason Causey and wife, Diana, of Denver, CO; thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

RICHARD C. HOWARD, SR.
Richard C. Howard, Sr., passed away September 29, 2011 in Sentara Obici Hospital. Born in North Carolina, he was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Edna Howard; daughter Sheila Howard; brothers Woody and Elbert Howard; and sister Linda Howard.
Mr. Howard was a Plant Engineer with Smithfield Foods.
He is survived by his son Richard C. Howard, Jr., of Suffolk, VA; daughter Lisa H. Mathias and husband David of Sunbury, NC; step daughter Anne Spencer Atwell and husband Mark of Powhatan, VA; four sisters Gladys H. Rawls of Ahoskie, NC, Jane H. Lawrence and husband Bill of Portsmouth, VA, Susan H. Simpkins and husband Mike of Suffolk, VA and Vicki H. Carr and husband Mike of Zuni, VA; grandchildren Michael, David, and Michelle Snelgrove and Taylor, Dakota, and Dylan Howard; and step grandson Nathan Doran.

HUGO D. GLENN
Ret. Lt. Col. Hugo DeLoca Glenn, 77, passed away October 23, 2011. Born in Nansemond Co., he was the son of the late Mary and Russell Glenn. He was predeceased by his brothers, Fleet Glenn, Dr. Rollin Glenn; and a sister, Monica Glenn.
Lt. Col. Glenn was a 1958 graduate of VPI, was a Vietnam veteran, and was a Bronze Star recipient.
Survivors include his wife, Helen F. Glenn; son, Lt. Col. Steven Glenn of Charleston, SC; daughter, Sharon Glenn of Seattle, WA; sisters, Leola Glenn, Tosca Minichan and husband, Dr. David Minichan, Jocelyn O’Bannon and husband, Dr. Bill O’Bannon, Patty Johnson; sisters-in-law, Doris Glenn, Betty Glenn, and Lillian Fowler.
