WALLACE GARNETT
Wallace B. Garnett died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Lake Prince Woods in the company of his family.
Mr. Garnett was born in Dunnsville, VA on July 28, 1913. The son of Professor William Care Garnett and Lena Hodge Wossman, he was one of seven children. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Norfleet Garnett, his brothers Julian and Muscoe Garnett of Suffolk, and other siblings. He served in the CMTC Calvary at the age of 17 for several years. Mr. Garnett was a World War II veteran serving as a Marine Master Sergeant at Guadalcanal. He turned down a commission and returned home at the end of the war to raise a family in Suffolk, his wife’s home town.
He owned and operated a number of businesses in Suffolk and the surrounding counties, most notably Garnett Oil Company with his brothers Muscoe and Julian Garnett. Mr. Garnett was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church, serving on its Board in past years, and was a member of the McLemore Men’s Sunday School Class throughout his life. He was a 32 degree Mason, a member of Nansemond Masonic Lodge 77, the Suffolk Shrine Club, and the Suffolk Elks Lodge BPOE 685.
He is survived by his children and their spouses daughter Martha and husband Holt Westbrook of Lookout Mountain, GA, sons Lewis and wife Ruby Garnett, and Fleet and wife Brenda Garnett, all of Suffolk; grandchildren Holt Westbrook, Garnett Westbrook of Atlanta, GA, Lewis Garnett, IV, Shawn and wife Sarah Garnett of Suffolk; step-grandson Wesley and wife Rene Rawles of Suffolk; many nieces and nephews including Virginia Carrington of Suffolk and Hannah and husband Leon Hall of Long Beach, NC; great nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law Mrs. Dorothy Garnett of Irvington, VA.
A Funeral will be conducted Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 11 AM in the R. W. Baker & Co Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington St, Suffolk, by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. The family will receive friends on Monday evening, June 18, 2007 from 7 to 8 p.m. at funeral home.

H. PAUL FUNKHOUSER
Howard Paul Funkhouser, 82, of Cherokee Drive, Suffolk, VA, went to his Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 20, 2007, after an extended illness.
Born in New Brighton, PA, he was the son of the late Howard Clifton and Jennie Mae Funkhouser, and proceeded in death by his six sisters and his parents.
Mr. Funkhouser was a former member of the New Brighton Free Methodist Church of New Brighton, PA and a current member of Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church of Suffolk, VA. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Germany, and was retired from Babcock and Wilcox Tubular Products of Beaver Falls, PA in 1986 after 33 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys Lorraine (Denbow) Funkhouser; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) French of Suffolk; son, Paul Dwight Funkhouser, Sr., of West Jefferson, NC and their spouses; five grandchildren, Paul D. Funkhouser, Jr. and Heather L. Funkhouser of Belmont, NC, Lorralyn G. Horne and Brandon L. French of Suffolk, W. Aaron French of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, James Garrett Funkhouser and Ethan Connor French; two sisters, Mrs. Leonard (Edna) Goettman and Mrs. Joseph (Martha) Russell of New Brighton, PA.
A funeral service will be held Saturday June 23 at 11 AM at the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Dan Kerley. Burial will be held Monday June 25 at 11 AM at the Albert G. Horton Jr., Memorial Veterans cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-8 PM at the funeral home. MARIE L. KIRK
Marie Lucille Linge Kirk died peacefully at her home August 23, 2007.
Born in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Christ and Mary Rose C. Linge and mother of the late William A. Kirk and Mary Kirk. Mrs. Kirk was a graduate of Cedar Crest College and a former laboratory technician at Harrisburg Hospital. She was a long time active volunteer at Maryview Hospital. Because of his enduring love for and dedication to Marie, her husband, Arthur, created and named the Marie Kirk Camellia for her.
Survivors include her husband of sixty years, Dr. Arthur A. Kirk; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Marie Kirk-Mendes and Mavilio J. (Joe) Mendes of Portsmouth; son and daughter-in-law, A. Russell and Pamela Kirk of Suffolk; grandchildren, Marie K. Clunan, Michael Kirk, Jeffrey Kirk; three great grandchildren and a nephew, William Linge of Wilmington, DE.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside at St. John's Episcopal Church cemetery, Suffolk, by the Rev. James W. Mathieson. RUSSELL L. DIXON
Russell Lowell Dixon, 81, went to be with the Lord on August 26, 2007.
A native of Orbit, VA, he was the son of the late Walter Samuel and Ethel Lorraine B. Dixon and widower of Annette Dixon. Mr. Dixon was a former resident of Suffolk, but he had lived in Grandy, NC, since his retirement from the Norfolk & Western Railroad as a messenger. He was a member of the Driver Fire Department. During WW II, he served in the Merchant Marines.
Survivors include his son, Russell L. Dixon and his wife, Ginny, of Portsmouth, VA; daughter Loretta D. Brill and her husband, Harold of North Carolina; grandchildren, Chris Smith, Aaron Smith, Christie Pickett, Sherry Dixon; and numerous great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the graveside in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Alan G. Moor. The family will receive friends following the service. MARSHALL H. PARKER
Marshall Howell Parker, 82, died August 26, 2007.
Born in Gates County, NC, he was the son of Cleopus and Lizzie H. Parker. He had retired from Planters Peanuts as bookkeeper. Mr. Parker was a member of First Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Club of Liberty Springs Christian Church.
Survivors include nieces, nephews and many special friends.

Harold Leroy Colvin, 77, died August 25, 2007

DIANA HORTON
Diana Nelms Horton, 93, died August 26, 2007, in Sentara Nursing Center, Chesapeake, VA.
She was born April 5, 1914, in Suffolk, VA, the daughter of the late S. Clyde and Matilda D. Nelms. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Thomas Horton and son, Thomas Clyde Horton.
Mrs. Horton was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Church’s Saints Alive Group. She retired form Obici Memorial Hospital, Medical Records Department.
Survivors include her sons, Charles N. Horton and wife, Sherrill of Chesapeake; Aubrey J. Horton and wife, Kathleen of Hurst, TX; grandchildren, Troy Langston of Ft Worth, TX, Lora Wylie of Haltom City, TX, Amy Horton of Hurst, TX; and Jonathan Horton of Liberty, KY; sister, Margaret Edmondson of Clemson, SC; special niece, Betty Bauer of Clemson, SC; special nephew, Randy West of Suffolk.
The family would like to acknowledge the loving care given by Sentara Nursing Center Staff.
A memorial service in celebration of her life will be conducted Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in Suffolk Christian Church by the Rev. Michael D. MARY DAMIANI
Mary Manos Damiani peacefully departed on August 26, 2007 at Nansemond Pointe. A native of Suffolk, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Katina and Gus Manos, and her brother, Dr. Nick J. Manos.
Mary was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, and retired as Office manager at Duke Oldsmobile. Mary was a member of Greek Orthodox Cathedral – Norfolk. She was also a member of the Riverview Garden Club, Sans Souci Literary Club, the Suffolk Art League, and member and past Secretary of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society.
She is survived by her husband Andrew B. Damiani, and cousins, Mrs. Rita Small, Dino and Tony Diamond, Gus and Dr. Tony Constant and Steve Manos, of Williamsburg.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 29, at 11 AM in Holly Lawn cemetery. The family will receive friends at R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. ELIJAH D. IVES
Elijah David Ives, 89, of Suffolk died August 29, 2007 at Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Aurora, N.C., he was the son of Mary N. and David Ives. Elijah was predeceased by his brothers Jerry, Clarence Ives. Mr. Ives was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and taught Sunday school for many years. He was a member the Norfolk Shrine, Khedive Temple A.A.O.N.M.S, Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter No. 1, and Ocean View Lodge #335 AF & AM.
Elijah is survived by his wife, Edna Ives; daughter, Katherine Rust of Norfolk; son, Louis “Bud” Ives and wife Barbara of Va. Beach; stepchildren, Thomas West and wife Dorothy of Lafayette, Louisiana, Larry West and wife Linda of Midlothian; 5 step grandchildren; 6 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

N. WAYNE MATTHEWS
Norman Wayne Matthews, Sr., 62, died September 2, 2007, at Sentara Obici Hospital.
A Virginia native, he was the son of the late Norman and Lorraine S. Matthews. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Wayne Matthews and his half sister, Becky Gilreath. Mr. Matthews was employed by Dominion Virginia Power as a turbine mechanic. He was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, the National Rifle Association and Suffolk Masonic Lodge #30.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Matthews; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Dawn and David Shetterly of Gloucester, VA; sons and daughter-in-law, Marshall A. and Shanna Matthews of Gates County, NC, Norman Wayne Matthews, II of Williamsburg, VA; stepson, Daniel Johnson of Windsor, VA; eleven grandchildren; sister, Sandra M. Wyatt of Surry, VA; half brother Mitchell Matthews of California; step-sister, Victoria Rudisail of Marietta, GA; uncle and aunt, Nick and Margaret Sarick of Suffolk.

EUNICE RUTH DEAN
Eunice Ruth Dean, 71, went to be with her Lord Thursday, April 4, 2008 at her residence.
Born August 3, 1936 and raised in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Dexter Cecil Pickett and Elizabeth Pickett Lambertson. She was a member of Nansemond River Baptist Church, and retired from K-Mart.
Ruth is survived by her loving family, including her three daughters, Gwen Dean Woodard of Suffolk, Darlene Dean of Portsmouth, Wanda Dean Keith and husband Jeff of Portsmouth; son Franklin Dean and wife Cynthia of Poquoson; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Dexter “DC” Pickett of MI; sister Francis Travis and husband Tom of Portsmouth; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother to many people, and a caring friend to all she knew.
A service will be conducted at 11:00a.m.on Monday, April 7, 2008 at Nansemond River Baptist Church by Dr. Timothy L. Piland. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-3:30p.m. at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk.
RUBY R. TAYLOE
Ruby Reese Tayloe, 92, died on April 4, 2008 in Suffolk, VA. She was born in Lewiston, NC, to the late Eva and Tom Reese. She was predeceased by her husband, Julian Brown Tayloe; sons, Richard and Frank Tayloe; and four brothers.
She was a member of West End Baptist Church for 54 years and was a former member of the church choir. She retired from Lipton Tea after 30 years of service.
Ruby is survived by her daughter Barbara Mizelle and husband Henry of Suffolk; daughters-in-law, Carolyn Tayloe of Suffolk and Carol Tayloe of Virginia Beach; brothers, Wilson Reese of San Diego, CA and Ramoth Reese of Spruce Pine, NC; six grand children, Tobi Byrd and husband Jimmy, Tim Tayloe, Mark Tayloe and wife Morgan, T.C. Mizelle, Emily Tayloe, and Katie Tayloe; three great grandchildren, Christopher Tayloe, Matthew Tayloe, and Reese Byrd.

SHIRLEY F. BREDON
Shirley Ferris Bredon, 82, died March 30, 2008 at Nansemond Pointe.
Born in Norfolk VA, she was the daughter of the late Nellie H. and Joseph Ferris. Mrs. Bredon was predeceased by her husband, Charles A. Bredon, her daughter, Kimberly Anne Bredon and her son, Joseph Earl Bredon. She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks BPOE 38 in Norfolk, a member of the Rainbow Club at the Church of the Ascension. Shirley was a Registered Nurse for 42 years. She received her Registered Nursing degree from the School of Nursing at DePaul. She loved flowers, plants, and traveling after she retired.
Survivors include her son, Charles A. Bredon, Jr. and wife Marsha of Suffolk; and grandson, Matthew Bredon of Suffolk.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Thursday at 11:00 am with Father Jim Parke at the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach with inurnment in the Church’s columbarium. D. LEE JACKSON
Dixon Lee Jackson, 86, died March 27, 2008, at Nansemond Pointe.
Born in North Carolina, he was the son of the late J. Hampton and Carey Grey Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, the VFW of Suffolk and the Man to Man Cancer Group. He had served many years in the construction business as a supervisor and was a Navy veteran of WW II.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Hayes Jackson; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly J. and Kevin Adams of Chesapeake; Sylvia J. and Errol Stout of Williamsburg, Theresa J. Taylor of Moulton, IA; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Lucy Jackson of Carrollton, Dickie and Sylvi Jackson of Toano; sister, Sadie J. Phillips of Newport News; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 pm at Hillcrest Baptist Church by the Rev. James George with entombment in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. JEFFERSON D. BANGLEY
Jefferson D. Bangley, 56, passed away March 24, 2008, at Sentara Obici Hospital after a short illness. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Lucille Bangley.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joanne F. Bangley, daughter, Sherry B. Huffman and husband Mike; brothers, William Bangley, Jr., and wife, Sarah of Palm City, Fl, Charles Bangley and wife, Carolyn of Greenville, NC; sister, Jane McQueen and husband, Mike of Earleysville, VA; grandchildren, Clint and Claire Huffman and several nieces and nephews.
He was retired from the Suffolk Police Department, after 29 years of service, 26 of them in the Detective Bureau, where he enjoyed the challenge of investigations and helping to bring closure to victims of crimes. He was voted Police Officer of the year in 1983. He was currently working part time for the Suffolk Sheriff Department. He loved his job where he considered all his coworkers his extended family.
He was a charter member of the Suffolk Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #41, where he served in numerous positions, including President. He was a member of Somerton United Methodist Church.
Mr. Bangley was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor and boisterous laugh. He will be greatly missed by all, especially Clint and Claire, who were the light of his life.
Memorial services will be conducted by the Rev. Becky Gwaltney at R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. with a private graveside service afterward. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home Wednesday, March 26, 2008, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
