Eula Mullins
Eula Mullins, 69, of the Clopton, AL, community, formerly of Richlands, died Apr. 22, 2006 in Dale Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born Mar. 15, 1937 to the late Beatrice and Roy Hooker.
She graduated from Bland High School in Bland and took her nurse training in Richlands.
In 1959, she married
Robert Mullins. She was a nurse at Clinch Valley Hospital in Richlands and Dale Medical Center in Ozark, AL until her retirement in 1996.
She attended Clopton United Methodist Church in Alabama, enjoyed gardening and was an avid antiquer.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Glenna Cooper, and one brother, Ralph Hooker.
Survivors: husband of 47 years, Robert Mullins; sons, Robert Mullins and wife, Betty, of Harrison, AR, Terry Mullins of Ozark; sisters, Pauline Vest and husband, Nelson, and Juanita McGuire and husband, Keith, all of Whitegate, Olena Cunningham and husband, Jack, of Richlands; brother, Roy Hooker, Jr. and wife, Betty, of Powhatan; sister-in-law, Faye Hooker of Richlands; and grandchildren, April Smith, Matthew Mullins and Jonathan Mullins.
The funeral will be conducted Apr. 26 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. David Brannock officiating.
Interment will follow in Hankins cemetery in Richlands.
Helen Jane Patrick
Helen Jane Patrick, 93, of the Raven Nest Branch section of Cedar Bluff, died Apr. 22, 2006 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born May 25, 1912 in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late James Arthur and Bertha Belton Patrick.
She was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area. She was retired from the Cedar Bluff Elementary School where she worked in the cafeteria.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Patrick and Audra O’Byrne, and three brothers, Paul B., James, and Lyle Patrick.
Survivors: sister, Grace Lowe of Cedar Bluff; devoted niece, Brenda O’Byrne of Richmond, whom she helped raise; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Apr. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Luther C. Peery
Luther C. Peery, 89, resident of Palm City, FL for 28 years, died at home in an accident Apr. 18, 2006.
He was born in Jackson, OH Feb. 10, 1917 to Roy and Clara Peery.
He grew up in Tazewell with his brother, Robert, and sisters Lois Lowry and Carol Courtney. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, M.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1939. He began his 38-year career with E.I. DuPont de Nemours working in the new field of fluorine engineering where he was co-designer of the plutonium pilot plant at Hanford in the Manhattan Project during WWII, and continued to advance the field in subsequent years at DuPont.
He was an outdoorsman who hiked and fished most of the national parks, and an avid seaman who owned his first boat in the 50s, which influenced his choice of residence in Palm City.
His sister-in-law, Frances Peery, four nephews, and three nieces survive him.
Burial and services will be held in Tazewell at 10 a.m. Apr. 27.

Betty Ann Sparks
Betty Ann Rasnick Sparks, 55, of the Wolford area of Rt. 3, Grundy, died Apr. 17, 2006 in the University of Virginia Hospital at Charlottesville, following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Silas Rasnick, Rt. 3, Grundy and the late Oma Stacy Rasnick.
She had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, member of Knox Creek Church of God, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.
Additional survivors: sons, David and wife, Angela Sparks, of Pilgrim Knob, Eric Wesley Sparks and Ryan Sparks, both of Rt. 3, Grundy; sister, Margie and husband, Robert Wood, of Huntington, WV; brother, Johnny and wife, Jennifer Rasnick of Alameda, NM; and two grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Apr. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Knox Creek Church of God near Hurley with Revs. Henry Rowe, Doug Blankenship and Charlie Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed in the Willis Blankenship cemetery on Main Knox near Hurley.
Services were held at the church Apr. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

Nannie Kitts Thurston Sullivan
Nannie Kitts Thurston Sullivan, 59, of Waynesboro, formerly of Tazewell, died April 22, 2006 at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
Born Jan. 12, 1947 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Nelson and Hattie Alley Kitts.
She retired from the Acme Furniture Company in Crozet.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son; one sister, Victoria Abel and one brother, Richard Kitts.
Survivors: son, Scott Thurston and wife, Fawn, of Waynesboro; grandson, Daniel Thurston; sisters, Edna Howell and husband, Bill, of Elkin, NC, Katherine Griffith and husband, Mike, and Margaret Earls, all of North Tazewell, Jean Deskins of Gretna; brothers, Alfred Kitts and wife, Kay, of Bluefield, VA, Albert Kitts and wife, Carol, of Bastian; special sister-in-law, Rosalie Kitts of North Tazewell; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Letha M. Thomas, 67, of Pound, formerly of Tazewell, died Apr. 21, 2006 at the Brookhaven Nursing Home in Kingsport, TN.
Born March 6, 1939 at Horsepen, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Thomas Dye, Sr. and Mollie Victoria Baker Dye.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Collins; one sister, Margie Mullins; and two brothers, John Thomas Dye and Carl Lee Dye.

Ernie Tiller
Ernie Tiller, 54, of Honaker, died Apr. 22, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Apr. 8, 1952 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Elijah and Maggie Gaynell Stevens Tiller.
A lifelong resident of the area, he attended the In The Beginning Fellowship Church and Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tivis Tiller and his wife, Jean, and Roy Scott Tiller; and seven nieces and nephews, Brian Tiller, Regina Tiller, Janet Tiller, Jessica Tiller, Johnathan Tiller, Johnia Hope Tiller and Jason Rasnake.
Survivors: wife of 31 years, Brenda Tiller; daughter and son-in-law, Shannon Marie and Roy Eugene Hurt, of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Courtney Nicole Hurt and Christopher Eugene "Bubba" Hurt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Carol Tiller of Bee, Rev. Betty Waldron, 71, of the Dry Fork area of North Tazewell, died Apr. 24, 2006 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

James Howard West
James Howard West, 88, of Swords Creek, died Apr. 19, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1917 in Christiansburg, he was a son of the late Robert and Bessie Lovins West.
He had been a resident of the Swords Creek area since 1944 and had owned and operated West Grocery in that area.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Freeda West, four brothers and four sisters.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie and Caffie West of Bristol, VA; brother, Harold West of Belfast; granddaughter, DeDe Jones and husband, Mike, of Bristol, TN; grandson, Keith West and wife, Danita West, of Louisville, KY; great-grandchildren, Dustin West, Kennedy Jones, Courtney West, Bailey Jones, and Ian West; and several nieces and nephews.

Stephen W. Worley
Stephen Wilfred Worley, 66, a resident of Milton, FL, died Apr. 19, 2006 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Leemaster, he was the son of the late Raleigh E. and Bonnie Yates Worley, Sr..
He had made his home in Milton for the past 26 years. He had worked for Island Creek Coal Company and was of the Baptist Faith. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He was a member of the UMWA Local of Keen Mountain.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia Kansas Matney Worley; one son, Gary Wayne Worley; and two brothers, Roger and Joseph Worley.

Helen Lois Crouse Young
Helen Lois Crouse Young, 66, of Tazewell, died Apr. 20, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born July 5, 1939 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Timothy Richard Crouse and Gracie Brooks Crouse.
She was of the Holiness faith. She was a member of the Tazewell Community Hospital Auxiliary and worked with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) and volunteered with A Child Shall Lead Them Food Pantry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Lee (Shorty) Young; one sister, Frances Thompson; and two brothers, John Richard Crouse and Kenneth Harold Crouse. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Survivors: daughter, Karen Melvin and husband, Brian, of Tazewell; son, Senior Chief Robert Young, USN and wife, Cathy, of Chesapeake; grandsons, Brandon Young and Ryan Young; sisters, Mary Butt of Bluewell, WV, Vivian Riley of North Tazewell, Juanita White of Martinsburg, WV; and several nieces and nephews.
