Ruth Wanda Elkins

Ruth Wanda Elkins, 81, of Honaker, died Apr. 25, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Dec. 5, 1924 in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Jerome B. and Nora Compton Elkins.

She was a registered nurse with over 50 years of service for the Washington Eye Clinic. She was a member of the Washington Cathedral Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Madeline Boyd, Gail Davis, Ethel Keene and Magnolia Elkins, and four brothers, Jay Elkins, Swain Elkins, Luther Elkins and Claude Elkins.

Survivors: sister-in-law, Mrs. Luther (Ruth) Elkins; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Bernice Hess.

The funeral was conducted at 10 a.m. Apr. 27 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Father Dan Brady officiating.

Burial followed in the Elkins cemetery at Horton Ridge.

Paul C. Mitchell, Jr.

Paul C. Mitchell, Jr., 43, of Bandy, went home to be with the Lord Apr. 27, 2006.

Born Nov. 23, 1962 in Tazewell County, he was the son of Bessie White Mitchell of Bandy and the late Paul Mitchell, Sr.

He was a member of Hill Creek Baptist Church and was a self-employed carpenter. He was a firefighter for Bandy Volunteer Fire Department.

Additional survivors: wife of 20 years, Pamela L. Houchins Mitchell; sons, Joshua K. Mitchell and Tristan A. Bucklin, both of the home, Steven P. Mitchell of Ft. Bragg, NC, Christopher S. Perkins of Kents Ridge; granddaughter, Bethany A. Mitchell; brothers, Douglas Mitchell of Bandy, Thomas Mitchell and Walter Mitchell, both of Taylorsville, NC; sister, Bobbie Keen of Bandy; many nieces and nephews; and special family, the Houchins family, J.A. Bandy and Steve Parsons.

The funeral was conducted at 12 noon Apr. 30 at Hill Creek Baptist Church in Richlands with Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating.

Burial followed in the Mitchell Family cemetery at Bandy.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.

Eunice B. Street

Eunice Blankenship Street, 81, of Independence, formerly of Buchanan County, died Apr. 27, 2006 in an Independence nursing facility.

Born Mar. 7, 1925 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William McKinley and Rhoda Lily Belle Blankenship.

She had spent most of her life in the Buchanan County area moving to Independence eight years ago. She was formerly employed as a cook at the Derby Café and the Rainbow Restaurant. She was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Street; one son, Harlis Edward Street; six brothers and sisters, Pearlie Blankenship, Grace Street, Virgie Street, Ora Street, Velva Duty and Pershing Blankenship; and two grandchildren.

Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Marvin Ratliff of Ivanhoe; son, James Elbert Street of Spring Hill; brother, Roosevelt Blankenship of Saltville; sisters, Leathia Street of Tazewell, Vida Street of Cedar Bluff, Pauline Chaffins of Mouthcard, KY, Ola Gay Morris of Glen Allen; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Apr. 30 at the Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating.

Interment followed in the Street cemetery at Rowe.

Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mincie Bonnita Taylor

Mincie Bonnita Taylor, 42, of Richlands, died Apr. 30, 2006 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she and was a daughter of Ruby Hagy Younts of Richlands and the late Junior Wesley Farmer.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the area.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Latasha Nicole Farmer; one sister, Wilma Farmer; and her grandparents, Andy and Lucy Hagy and Wesley and Susie Farmer.

Survivors: sons, Michael Taylor of Ahoskie, NC, Randal Taylor and fiancée, Sunshine Hawkins, of Abingdon, Jeramy Farmer of the home; sisters, Velma Martin and husband, Tim, of Richlands, Sylvia Johnson and husband, Johnny, of Raven; brothers, Ralph Farmer and wife, Jonoka, of Ahoskie, Preston Farmer of Wardell, Perry Farmer and wife, Peggy, of Conway, NC; grandson, McCauley Taylor of Galax; special friend, Frank Walters; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

The funeral will be conducted May 4 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Chester Perricllia officiating.

Burial will follow in the Reynolds Ridge Family cemetery on Reynolds Ridge.

Friends may call at the funeral home May 2 and 3 from 6-9 p.m.

Ethel Alverta Viney

Ethel Alverta Viney, 75, of North Tazewell, died Apr. 26, 2006 at a Bluefield, WV hospital.

Born Apr. 2, 1931 in Tazewell, she was the daughter of the late Walter Franklin Smith, Sr. and Ethel Carroll Smith.

She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Wilbur Memorial United Methodist Church in Tazewell, where she served as the church organist and pianist. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and helped organize many church related events. She volunteered many hours to her community, the Crab Orchard Museum, and the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens. In 1989 she was the honored recipient of a Volunteer Citizen of Virginia Award.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Franklin Smith, Jr. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 43 years, John Blane Viney, Jr.; daughters, April Carroll Viney and special daughter, Donna Viney-Watkins and husband, Jamey, all of Hampton; sons, Jon Blane Viney, III of North Tazewell, Walter "Geezer" Viney of Princeton, WV; grandchildren, Christian Tyler Viney, Spencer Elizabeth Viney, Cameron Cain Viney, Hayden Blane Aliff, Jonathan Viney, and Uniqua Viney; special grandson, O.J. Reed; and a host of other family and friends.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 2 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Browning officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Ruby Ellen Barton

Ruby Ellen Dotson Barton, 91, of Honaker, died Apr. 18, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Dec. 16, 1914 in Drill, she was a daughter of the late Conley and Sarah Gregg Dotson.

A lifelong resident of the area, she attended Blackford Church of Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Barton, and twelve brothers and sisters.

Survivors: sister, Fannie Lester and husband, Dennis, of Drill; foster daughter, Alice Israel of Drill; foster grandsons, Tony Israel and wife, Kim, of Merryville, TN, Tim Israel of Rosedale; foster great-grandchildren, Allie Israel and Logan Israel, both of Merryville, Cody Israel and Stephanie Israel, both of Rosedale; special niece, Margaret Lindsey of Rosedale; very special friend, Troy Meade; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Apr. 20 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Peerman Lester and Rev. Toby Hubbard officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Reba Dean Blevins

Reba Dean Blevins, 66, of Raven, went to be with the Lord Apr. 24, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.

George E. Bowling

George E. Bowling, 77, of North Tazewell, died Apr. 18, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Oct. 26, 1928 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late John E. Bowling and Callie V. Duncan Bowling.

Survivors: sisters, Nancy Boettcher of Virginia Beach, Mary Candler of Charleston, WV, Ollie Warnick of Baltimore, MD, Alberta Ferebee of Greenville, NC; niece, Anita Nuckles of Suffolk; and cousins, T.E. Bowling, Jr. and Ralph Sheets.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Apr. 21 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Buddy Herald officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

John A. Davis

John A. Davis, 33, of North Tazewell, died Apr. 19, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Dec. 11, 1972 in Tazewell, he was a son of Robert Joseph Davis and Mary Sue Brewster Davis of North Tazewell.

Additional survivors: daughters, Samantha Ann Davis of Tannersville, Makayla Davis of Tazewell; son, Brandon Lee Davis of North Tazewell; sisters, Cathy Lynn Davis Crawford and Patty Ann Davis Vanhoozier, both of North Tazewell; and brothers, Wayne Anthony Davis, Rex Allen Davis, and Robert Floyd "Duke" Davis, all of Tazewell.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Apr. 24 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Johnny D. Honaker

Johnny Drannon Honaker, 58, of Bishop, died Apr. 19, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a long illness.

Born Nov. 3, 1947 in Baptist Valley, he was a son of Gladys Deerha Honaker of Tazewell and the late Grover Sesler Honaker.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dolly Bernice Lewis and Iva Carol Sargent.

Additional survivors: wife, Tina Sue Honaker; son, John Grover Honaker of Virginia; daughters, Tina Marie Erlo of Florida, Heather Nicole Honaker of Tazewell; stepson, Phillip Thacker, Jr. of the home; step daughter, Tina Dawn Elswick of Kentucky; foster children, Bobby Sargent and R. J. Riley of the home; brother, Lonnie Edward Honaker of Harrisonburg; sisters, Alice Carner Boyd of Swords Creek, Shelia Y. Morris of North Tazewell, Sharon L. Cramer of Tazewell; four grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Apr. 22 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Canning officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Janice N. Lowman

Janice N. Lowman, of North Tazewell, died Apr. 21, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born in Amonate, she was a daughter of the late Wiley Louis and Reba Josephine Mateer Lowman.

She retired from Consolidation Coal Company after 45 years of service as a salary payroll clerk. She loved to play the Virginia Lottery and to shop at CVS, Farm Bureau, Double Kwik, Cargo, Food Lion and the Cave.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Frank L. "Bull" Lowman, and two sisters, Evelyn Smallwood and Margaret Ann Boothe. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors: nephews, Frankie Lowman and wife, Linda, of Tazewell, Charles Smallwood and wife, Kathy, of Louisville, KY, Clyde "Buzzy" Boothe and wife, Becky, of Charlotte, NC; nieces, Erra Jo Lowman Sutherland and husband, Bill, of Wise, Phyllis Craig and husband, Jerry, of Morgantown, WV, Audrey Aunspaugh and husband, Richard, of Sebring, FL, Betty White and husband, Junior, of Matthews, NC, and Judy Gunter and husband, Ronnie, of Jesse, WV; 15 great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Apr. 25 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.

Carmen Denise Matney

Carmen Denise Smith Matney, 38, of Hurley, died Apr. 16, 2006 in Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC, following an extended illness.

Born at Radford, she was a daughter of John Franklin "Frankie" Smith, of Hurley, and Donna Sue Dotson, of Hurley.

She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Word Evangelistic Outreach Church. She was a graduate of Hurley High School Class of 1986 and a graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College and was a former employee of Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, as a Radiologist.

She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Carson Dotson, Jr.; paternal grandmother, Georgia Lowe Smith; and paternal grandfather, Amos Smith.

Additional survivors: husband, Eddy Dean Matney; a very special friend, Pamela Adkins Endicott, who donated bone marrow twice giving Carmen four extra years of life; maternal grandmother, Frankie Justus Dotson of Hurley; and several cousins.

The funeral was conducted Apr. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Word Evangelistic Outreach Church, Wolford, with Rev. Darrell Davis officiating.

Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Services were held Apr. 19 at 7 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel.

The body was moved to the church Apr. 20 at 4 p.m. with services at 7 p.m.
