Alice K. Hatfield, age 90, of Richmond, formerly of Memphis, Tenn., widow of William H. Hatfield, died Thursday, January 3, 2002. She is survived by her children, Paul Geoffrey Hatfield of Dillon, Colo. and Lori Hatfield of Harrisonburg, Va.; also three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Hatfield was a member of Ashland Presbyterian Church. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Ashland Presbyterian Church, Ashland, Va. Interment will be in Memphis, Tenn. Donald B. Hatton Sr., age 72, of Laneview, died Friday, January 4, 2002. He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth E. "Betty" Hatton. Survived by his wife, Ruth E. Hatton; three daughters, Beverly Elbourn and Annette Coleman, both of Center Cross, Reba G. Miller of Culpeper; three sons, Donald B. Hatton Jr. of Dunnsville, Joe Hatton of Paul's Cross Roads, Michael Hatton of Church View; one sister, Shirley Compton of Williamsburg; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also survived by one stepdaughter, Sandra Jenkins of Hume; three stepsons, Charles R. Hatton and Earl F. Hatton, both of Sterling and Walter L. Hatton of Gainesville. Edward John Hendricks, age 75, died Thursday, January 3, 2002. Survivors include his brother, Ronald D. Hendricks and his wife, Laura and nephew, Peter Hendricks. HUBBARD
Dorothy Owen Hubbard died Friday, January 4, 2002 at Southhampton Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Hubbard was born in Sedley, Va. on November 7, 1925. She was a daughter of the late Clarence Benjamin and Annie Lewis Owen. Mrs. Hubbard was married for 54 years to Harvey "HJ"
Johnson Hubbard Jr., formerly of Rice, Va. Mrs. Hubbard graduated with B.S. degrees in biology and physical education from Longwood College in 1947 and became a school teacher. She taught in Roanoke before returning to Sedley where she joined the Franklin school system. Mrs. Hubbard co-founded Hubbard Peanut Company, Inc. (Hubs) with her husband, HJ, by developing a recipe that had been handed down for generations by families in her native Southampton County. Began as a way to stay at home with her four children, Mrs. Hubbard's venture in the kitchen quickly grew through word of mouth into a business that ships Virginia peanuts all over the world. While others were successful at selling"roasted" peanuts, Mrs. Hubbard was the first in Virginia to commercialize the "home cooked" process for water blanching and oil roasting extra-large Virginia peanuts. What began as a cottage industry, grew through Mrs. Hubbard's efforts, in conjunction with her husband HJ's ongoing assistance, into one of the top employers in the area. Mrs. Hubbard is recognized throughout the peanut industry as a pioneer. She was the first among processors to cull only the very largest peanuts from the local shellers, thus, establishing an unwavering standard for superior quality in the peanut industry. Mrs. Hubbard was a lifelong member of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church in Sedley. While still active in her business, Mrs. Hubbard served as a founding director for Southampton Memorial Hospital for 18 years and also on the advisory board which built Walter Cecil Rawls Library in Courtland. She was a member of the board of directors for Rawls Museum Arts, the Franklin-Southampton Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin-Southampton County Economic Development Commission and Cypress Cove Country Club. She was past president of the Sedley Woman's Club. Mrs. Hubbard also served most recently on the Longwood College Alumni Board of Directors and is one of 54 individuals who has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Longwood College. She was a member of Tidewater Golf Association and was a club champion at Cypress Cove Country Club. Mrs. Hubbard also enjoyed membership in the Franklin Garden Club and the Garden Club of Virginia. Mrs. Hubbard is survived by her husband of 54 years, H J Hubbard Jr. and three daughters; Lynne Hubbard Rabil and her husband, Frank, Sandra Hubbard Edwards and her husband, Jon, all of Franklin, Terri Hubbard Powers and her husband, Tom of Richmond; and a son, Harvey
Johnson Hubbard III of Sedley. Mrs. Hubbard also enjoyed her three grandchildren, Marshall Rabil, Jessica Rabil and Kaitlin Edwards. Mrs. Hubbard was predeceased by her brother, Clarence B. Owen Jr; and her three sisters, Elizabeth Owen Gillette, Audrey Owen Beale, and Sarah Jane Owen. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2002 at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, Sedley, Va., with the Rev. Elizabeth von Trapp Walker officiating. The burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, Va. from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at other times at the residence and suggest, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Grace Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Sedley Volunteer Fire Department.

Ada Beadles Inge, age 87, widow of Eldridge W. Inge of Burgess, Va., went home January 3, 2002. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Beryl and Steve Coverstone; a son and daughter-in-law, E.W. and Marcia Inge; three grandchildren, Neil and wife, Leigh Anne Coverstone, Kevin and Kelly Inge; and a special caregiver, Brenda Taylor. Curtis F. Lane, age 31, of Bumpass, Va. died Wednesday, January 2, 2002. He is survived by his wife, LuAnn Lane; one son, Cody Lee Copeland; mother, Mrs. Darlene Melton-Funderburke of Charlotte, N.C.; father, Theodore L. Lane Sr. of Rockville, Va.; one brother, Lendy Lane of Cartersville, Va.; one sister, Shannon Oliver of Belmont, N.C.; one half-sister, Tammi Lane of Toms River, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Curtis was a member of Salem Baptist Church. He was employed at Dominion Power Company and enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR racing. MACFARLANE
Gaynelle Bass Macfarlane passed away at home on January 3, 2002. Born in Annapolis, Md. on October 27, 1917, Gaynelle was a 1934 graduate of John Marshall High School where she received highest honors in English. She attended RPI and later VCU, thoroughly enjoying her "senior" student status. A long-time member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, she was a member of the Bainbridge Community Ministry Board and the Westover Hills Women's Club. Her work included many years as director of Richmond's Southside DMV license agency, an employee of Thalhimers department store and Reynolds Metals Company. In her later years she turned to her true passion, writing. As special correspondent for the Richmond News Leader, Gaynelle focused on the interests of teenagers. "Gay Gay" is survived by five children, Charles E. Macfarlane II of London; Beverley Mafarlane Dew and James Medlin Macfarlane of Richmond, Hunter Brooke Macfarlane of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Deborah Macfarlane Zink of Orlando, Fla. Her 11 grandchildren include Katherine, Stefania, Christina, Jordan, Elizabeth, David, Hunter B., Austin and Susanna Macfarlane and Thomas Dew III and Kathleen E. Dew. Great-grandchildren include T. Randolph Dew IV and Burgess Bowles Dew. Nieces include JoAnne Bass Earl and Patricia Bass Paliante and nephews are J. Timothy Bass and Kenneth E. Hicks. Her surviving sisters-in-law are Margaret Branch Bass and Helen Armstrong Bass. She is the widow of Charles Evans Macfarlane and the daughter of the late James E. Bass Sr. and Goldie O. Bass; and the sister of two deceased brothers, James E. Bass Jr. and Joseph G. Bass, all of Richmond. Gordon W. Owens Jr., age 56, of 613 Azalea Ave., died January 1, 2002. Surviving are his devoted mother, Nannie G. Retired Army Captain Frank Yates Perrin Sr., 85, of Richmond, passed away January 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Vetrice Perrin; his children, Frank Y. Perrin Jr., Dennis Patrick Perrin, Debra A. Perrin, Susan McNamara and Rudy Faas; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey Szumowski and Evelyn Pepitone; and one brother, Wallace Perrin. PLOTKIN
Ronald M. Plotkin of Richmond died Thursday, January 3, 2002. Born February 26, 1944, Ronnie was a 1962 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, a 1966 graduate of Lehigh University and a 1969 graduate of the T.C.
Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. He served with the 80th Division, U.S. Army Reserves and worked as a lawyer in private practice from 1970 to 1980. He was vice president and later president of Richmond Lumber Co. from 1980 to 1990 and then returned to private law practice from 1990 to 1999. He was a member of the State Water Control Board from 1987 to 1991 and served as vice chairman from 1990 to 1991. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Congregation Beth Ahabah, former trustee for the Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Federation, member of the Virginia State Bar, the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club, the Westwood Club and Congregation Beth Ahabah. He was the eldest son of Shirley Perel Plotkin and the late Jacob Yank Plotkin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Catherine Strause Plotkin; his sons, Jay Plotkin of Austin, Texas and his wife, Karen and Adam Plotkin of Richmond; his brother, James N. Plotkin and his wife, Gail; sisters, Marianne Plotkin Metzger and her husband, Ted and Cathy Plotkin Daniel and her husband, Marvin; 14 nieces and nephews, 3 great-nephews; aunt, Sylvia Russinsky; and a great many cousins. Jerry V. Proffitt, age 82, widow of James E. Proffitt, died January 2, 2002 after a long illness. She is survived by her daughter, Jonni A. Farish and son-in-law, John H. Farish of Goochland; granddaughter, Bridget Morgan and her husband, Mark Morgan of Richlands, N.C.; her grandson, Eric C. Bransford of Richmond; two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Grace Morgan; a devoted niece, Phyllis Taylor and a host of devoted friends and family. James E. Rice died January 3, 2002. He is survived by his wife, June E. Rice. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Huntley Rice. He is also survived by a son, James T.
