Julie Stuart Anderson

Julie Stuart Anderson, 52, of Bastian, went home to rest in the arms of Jesus Aug. 5, 2006 at Giles Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 5, 1953 in Roanoke, she was a daughter of Donald Forbes of Covington and Anne S. Forbes of Roanoke.

She was a longtime member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Tazewell. She was a graduate of Radford University and had been a volunteer with the Historic Crab Orchard Museum. She was a home schooling mother who home schooled her children through graduation and was in the process of educating her third child.

Additional survivors: husband, Doug Anderson; daughter, Alana Anderson of the home; sons, Andrew Anderson and Alexander Anderson, both of the home; brother, Michael Forbes of Salem; and sister, Karen Kollech.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 8 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Henry Johnson officiating.

Burial followed at the Anderson Family cemetery at Grapefield.

Nina Sharon Carroll

Nina Sharon Carroll, 65, of Richlands, died Aug. 6, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Sept. 10, 1940 in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Raleigh Houchins and Della Smith Osborne.

She was a member of Raven Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Jettie Shelton.

Survivors: daughters, Tammy Elswick and Ginger Elswick, both of Lebanon, Susan Michelle Sawyers of Bluefield, WV, Vickie Lassiter of West Point; son, Johnny Wesley Carroll of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Joseph Elswick, Kimberly Carroll, Wesley Johnson, Amanda Pierce, Martin Pierce and Ryan Carroll; brother, Jack Horton and wife, Connie, of Cedar Bluff; and sister, Betty Leonard and husband, E.W., of Abingdon.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 9 at Raven Assembly of God Church at Raven with Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Burial will follow in the Simmons cemetery at Red Root Ridge.

Singleton Funeral Service is serving the Carroll family.

Betty Josephine Day

Betty Josephine Horn Day, 73, of the Chicken Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, went to be with the Lord Aug. 2, 2006 at her home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Whitewood, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and Brassie McKinney Horn, both Buchanan County natives.

She was a graduate of Whitewood High School, Class of 1951, and was a former Deli supervisor for the Acme Supermarket at Doran. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was of the Presbyterian faith and had resided in the area for 55 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy White, Mable Ratcliff, Georgia Brown, and one grandson, Joshua Day.

Survivors: loving husband, Vincent Day of Chicken Ridge; daughter, Connie Keene and husband, Gerald, of Pinnacle, NC; sons, Randy Day and wife, Susan, of Rural Hall, NC, Greg Day and wife, Diane, of Millbrook, AL, Andrew Day and wife, Susan, of Advance, NC; sister, Watie Cantrell of Richlands; brother, Tommy Horn, of Richlands; grandchildren, Matthew Keene, William Day, Jacob Day, Dusty Joyce, Sarah Jo Day, Nora Stacy Day and Gabby Ruth Day; special friends, Home Nursing Company, Wanda Martin; and sister-in-law Gladys Horn.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Bill Keene officiating.

Internment followed at the Day Family cemetery located on Chicken Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Judy Layne Ferrell

Judy Layne Ferrell, 64, of Richlands, died Aug. 2, 2006 at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1942 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of Flornie Baldwin Ferrell of Tazewell and the late Boyd Ferrell.

She was a graduate of Bluefield State College and Radford Teacher’s College. She was a retired school teacher from the Russell County School System. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a half brother, Harvey Ferrell.

Additional survivors: sisters, Eloise Scott and husband, Johnny, of Front Royal, Sharon Ferrell Hurley and husband, Bob, of Looney Creek; brother, Roger Ferrell and wife, Shirley, of Claypool Hill; helpful and loving friend, Joyce White of Richlands; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Denton officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gethsemane Baptist Church, 2902 Clinch Street, Richlands, VA 24641.

Elizabeth Ann Hale

Elizabeth Ann Buckland Hale, 64, of Honaker, died Aug. 5, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.

Born April 4, 1942 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Palmer J. "P.J." and Nasba Geneva Wheatley Buckland.

A lifelong resident of the area, she was a 1959 graduate of Honaker High School. She was formerly employed at Tillers/Big M Discount Store for over 30 years and had most recently worked at K-Mart for three years. She attended Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in Honaker.

Survivors: husband of 44 years, Luther Winford "L.W." Hale; daughters, Brenda Jean Hale and T.J. Baumgart, Nancy Leanora Keen and husband, Tim, and Karen Ann Lowe and husband, Terry, all of Honaker; grandchildren, Jacob Nathaniel Coleman and Allie Elizabeth Lowe; step-granddaughter, Kayla Keen; brother, David Buckland and wife, Charo of Elkton, MD; special friends, Sarah Love McReynolds and Betty and Bill Stevens; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Taylor, Rev. Steve Perkins and Rev. Clyde Rose officiating.

Graveside services were conducted at 12 noon Aug. 8 at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Interment followed.

Roy C. Hess

Roy C. Hess, 82, of Kingsport, TN, formerly of Raven, died Aug. 6, 2006.

Born April 7, 1924 in Russell County, he was the son of the late Charles Robert and Jessie Fitzgerald Hess.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired foreman miner for Island Creek VP #2.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Jenny) Vandyke Hess; one son, Ronnie Hess; six brothers, Johnny Hess, Cleotus Hess, Paul Hess, Clarence Hess, Richard Hess and Columbus Hess; and two sisters, Ollie Coleman and Beulah Keene.

Survivors: daughters, Ruth Anne Vandyke of Kingsport, TN, Faye Fitzwater of Norfolk, Judy Bradshaw of Richlands; sons, Jerry Hess of Hurley, Cecil Hess of Richlands; brothers, Winfred Hess of Paintlick, Ervin Hess of West Kavina, CA; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m. Aug. 10.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at the funeral home.

Freda Kay Justice

Freda Kay Justice, 49, of Rosedale, died Aug. 1, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born March 4, 1957 in Richlands, she was a daughter of Alice McCloud Justice of the home and the late Billy Junior Justice.

A lifelong resident of the area, she had moved to Rosedale three years ago from the River Mountain section of Honaker. She was a 1975 graduate of Honaker High School and was currently employed by Lear Corporation. She was a member of Blackford United Methodist Church and currently attended Honaker United Methodist Church.

Additional survivors: brothers, Lynn Justice and wife, Barbara, of Rosedale, Jeff Justice and wife, Erin of Bristol, VA; nieces, Cyndi Whited and Abbie Elizabeth Justice; nephew, Adam Justice; and grand-nephew, Peyton Whited.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 3 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jody Breeding officiating.

Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

Rev. Jessie Miller

Rev. Jessie Miller, 74, of the Gardener section of Swords Creek, died Aug. 6, 2006 at his residence.

Born Dec. 14, 1931 in Russell County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Leona Crouse Miller.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Pentecostal faith and was a member of the Swords Creek Block Church. He was a devoted Christian and had spent 40 years in the ministry, during which time he served as pastor at various churches throughout the community.

He was a retired coal miner having been employed by Clinchfield Coal Company until his retirement in 1974 and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local 1426. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lacy Miller, and one infant brother.

Survivors: wife of 53 years, Mildred Elaine Honaker Miller; children, Diann Munsey and her husband, Tim, of Claypool Hill, Pam Stinson and husband, Glen, and Barry Miller and wife, Ginger, all of Honaker, Jerl Miller and wife, Connie, of Patterson, Sandy Whitt and husband, Doug, of Swords Creek; eight grandsons; one granddaughter; two great-grandsons; sister, Roberta Hylton of Canton, OH; twin brother, Justin Miller of Honaker; brothers, Houston Miller, Preston Miller, Harold Lee Miller and Stevie Miller, all of Swords Creek; special friends, Dr. Raymond Bishop and the nurses and staff of Intrepid Home Health Care; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Robinson, Rev. James Tiller and Rev. Dennis White officiating.

Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Andy Winfred Newberry

Andy Winfred Newberry, 63, of Swords Creek, died Aug. 3, 2006, following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1942 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Winfred Walter and Ida Bell Short Newberry.

He attended Horton Ridge Church of God. He was a retired coal miner and served in the National Guard.

Survivors: sons, Eric Newberry of Richlands, Ernie Newberry of Swords Creek; sisters, Frances Hill and husband, Hubert, of Swords Creek, Helen Street of Raven, Janice Sue Lawson and husband, Denny, of Doran; brothers, Roger Newberry and wife, Sue, and Glen Newberry, all of Richlands, Walter (Junior) Newberry and wife, Cindy, of Chicago, IL, Hubert Newberry of Doran; three grandchildren; and special friend, Nancy Belton.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Aug. 6 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Dennis White and Rev. Jess Whited officiating.

Burial followed in the Newberry cemetery at Horton Ridge.

Raymond Miller Proffitt

Raymond Miller Proffitt, 94, of Richlands, died July 31, 2006 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Red Ash, he was the son of the late Charlie and Lettie Shelton Proffitt, both Tazewell County natives.

He had spent his entire life in the area and was of the Holiness Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Proffitt, three brothers and five sisters.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: daughters, Alma Whited and husband, Mack, of Rosedale, Debbie Proffitt of Richlands; sons, Johnny Proffitt and wife, Annie, of Pilgrim Knob, James Proffitt and wife, Diana, of Thompson Valley, Reece Proffitt and wife, Vicki, of Rowe, Mike Proffitt and wife, Bernice, of Feds Creek, KY; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and special friends and caregivers, Russell County Hospice.

The funeral was conducted Aug. 3 at 1 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Tim Lester and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.

Joyce Anne Pruett

Joyce Anne Pruett, 64, of Oxnard CA, formerly of Bishop, died Aug. 2, 2006 at the home of her companion, Donald Dittmann.

Born Jan 28, 1942, she was the daughter of Lance S. and Gladys Ramsey Pruett of Bishop.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald L Pruett and Randall W. Pruett, and one sister, Brenda P. Gore.

Survivors: son, Ronald S. Wilfong of Butler, KY; daughter, Melissia W. Regis and son-in-law, Kevin Regis of Lake Jackson TX; grandchildren, Charlotte and Eddie Wilfong, Mary, Keegan, Meghan, and Koy Regis; sister, Norma Jean Scammell and brother-in-law, Frank Scammell, Jr. of Bishop; very special niece, Tonya DeGallery of Spotsylvania; and several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and wonderful friends.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 12 at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield VA.

Memorial contributions can be made to your favorite charity in her name.
