Mildred Deola Taylor
Mildred Deola Taylor, 68, of North Tazewell, died Dec. 17, 2005 at her home.
Born Sept. 6, 1937 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late John and Kate Price Clark.
She had lived in Tazewell for the past three years, moving there from Winston-Salem, NC. She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Taylor, and two brothers, James Dean Clark and Roscoe "Buddy" Price.
Survivors: daughter, Wanda Sue George of North Tazewell; half-sister, Betty Foster of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Scotty Austin of Kentucky, Crystal Dye of Virginia; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Henry Rose and Rev. Lenora Vanover officiating.
Interment will follow in the Hubbard cemetery on Lewis Creek.
Rose May Artrip
Rose May Artrip, 63, of Lebanon, died Oct. 15, 2006 in a Lebanon nursing facility.
Born August 12, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Nelson and Evelyn Warren. She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Artrip and one brother, Richard Warren.
Survivors include sons, Michael Artrip of Cleveland, Virginia and James Artrip and wife, Kim of Elkton, Maryland; granddaughter, Amanda Artrip of Elkton, Maryland; sister, Evelyn Wilson of Baltimore; brother, Nelson Warren of Baltimore.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 12 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Richard B. Smith officiating. Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Nancy Carolyn Baxter
Nancy Carolyn McFall Baxter, 75, of Bristol, VA, died Oct. 14 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, following an extended illness.
Born in Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Parker and Maude Looney McFall.
She was a graduate of Grundy High School and attended Roanoke College and Bluefield Business College. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a past member of the Grundy Women’s Club. She was a homemaker and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She worked alongside her husband, Dr. Robert F. Baxter for many years in his medical practice in Buchanan County. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grundy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert F. Baxter on June 11, 1996; son, Robert F. Baxter, Jr. on Nov. 24, 1973, sisters, Billie Jo Lark and Bobbie Jean Smith; and one step-sister, Mildred Pierce.
Survivors: daughters, Mary Patricia and husband, Don Lynch, of Kingsport, TN, Frances Lee and husband, Rayburn Minton II, of Grundy, Nancy Jo and husband, William Testerman, of Kingsport, TN, Elizabeth Ann and husband, Rick Wright, of Abingdon; granddaughters, Aimee Baxter Cole of Cedar Bluff, JoBeth Baxter Wright of Abingdon, Emily Carolyn Testerman and Sarah Elizabeth Testerman, both of Kingsport, TN; and grandsons, Robert Rayburn Minton of Johnson City, TN, and Aaron Robert Wright of Abingdon.
Celebration of Life was held Oct. 17 at 12 noon at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grundy with Father Dan Bain and Father Paul Maier officiating.
Burial followed in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Friends called at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Oct. 16 with services by the Daughters of the American Revolution followed by The Rosary. She was moved to the Church Oct. 17 for the service.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Robert F. Baxter Health Care Scholarship, Southwest Virginia Community College, P.O. Box SVCC, Richlands, VA 24641.
Noah "Hammer" Boyd
Noah Alexander "Hammer" Boyd, 79, of Portsmouth, died Oct. 5, 2006.
A native of Russell County, he retired as a supervisor of the Paint Department at NORSHIPCO, was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Khedive Temple Desert Patrol for more than 20 years.
Survivors: wife of 59 years, Vella I. Boyd; daughter, Deborah Brenneman and son-in-law Terry; sons, Bobby Allen Boyd and James A. Boyd; grandson, Brian Allen Boyd and wife Amneris; great-granddaughter, Rebecca Grace; great-grandson, Cole Daniel; sister, Norma Jean Boyd; and brothers, John and Danny Boyd.
Services were private.
Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children or American Cancer Society.
Nancy E. Costello
Nancy Estella Costello, 53, of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 9, 2006 in a Johnson City, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of Shirley "Jean" Shelton Stiltner of Cedar Bluff and the late Gratho Stiltner.
She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area most of her life and was a retired customer service representative from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. She was a Richlands High School Class of 1971 graduate and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Costello, and one brother, Larry Stiltner.
Additional survivors: son, Larry "J.R." Costello of Cedar Bluff; sister, Pat Stiltner of Cedar Bluff; brother, Teddy Stiltner of Canton, PA; sister-in-law, Karen Stiltner of Silsbee, TX; and grandson, Ethan Chandler Costello.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Gerald Stacy officiating.
Interment followed at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
Eva Wimmer Goodman
Eva Wimmer Goodman, 81, of Whitewood, died Oct. 14, 2006 at her home following a sudden illness.
She was born Aug. 15, 1925 in Buchanan County and was the daughter of the late Suel and Alta Perkins Wimmer.
She had been a lifelong resident of the Whitewood area and was a member of the Flatwoods Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peerless S. Goodman; two brothers; one sister; and one son, Roy Dean Wimmer.

Christopher Harrison
Christopher Dewayne Harrison, 37, of Abingdon, died Oct. 10, 2006 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Jan. 23, 1969 in Richlands, he was a son of the late Isaac and Kathleen Barrett Harrison.
He was a graduate of Grundy High School and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his adoptive parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nevada Lee Harrison, and two brothers, Charles Randall Harrison and Maynard Douglas Harrison.
Survivors: wife, Kristi Grubb Harrison of Bristol, TN; daughters, Amber Harrison and Loryn Harrison, both of Bristol, TN; his mother, Loretta Hagy of Abingdon; his father, George Cresswell of Elkton, MD; brothers, Wayne David Harrison of Honaker, Isaac Edward Harrison of Abingdon, and Ted Andrew Harrison of Dublin; half-sister, Tonya Heath of Bristol, VA; and step-sisters, Linda Gail Matney of Vansant, Kathy Jordan of Kingsport, and Amy Knight of Myrtle Beach.

Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Fife cemetery in Finney.
Harold Lee Mitchell
Harold Lee Mitchell, 64, of Council, died Oct. 12, 2006 in a Bristol, TN, hospital, following a brief battle with melanoma.
Born Feb. 25, 1942 in Drill, he was a son of Ruby Mitchell of Council and the late Thomas Mitchell.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1959 graduate of Council High School. He began working in factories after his high school graduation, but soon discovered the coal industry. During his employment he became a mine foreman, federal mine inspector and operated his own mines for many years. After ill health forced his retirement from the mines, he founded Jacket City, an internet business selling NASCAR jackets and hats.
A devout Christian, he was a member and deacon of Drill Chapel Church. He was a member of the board of directors of Council Fire Department and an Honorary Boy Scout Leader for Troop 711. He loved God, Drill Chapel Church, his family, the mountain cabin, playing and singing Gospel music, and spending time with "Dad’s Ol Boy," Dustin.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Krista Leigh Snead; two sisters, Barbara June Israel and Donna Sue Mitchell; and his mother-in-law, Iline Breeding.

Interment followed in the Baldwin cemetery at Drill.
Sylvia Irene Harris Price
Sylvia Irene Harris Price, 60, of the Lynn Springs section of Swords Creek, died Oct. 15, 2006 at her home.
Born January 31, 1946 in Council, she was a daughter of the late Worley Harris and Vida Dye Harris. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Lynn Springs Free Will Baptist Church, where in the past, she had served as the pastor for several years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenford Price.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Jerry Monk of Swords Creek; granddaughter, Jerissa Monk of Swords Creek; brothers, Sherman Harris and wife, Debra of Richlands, Blake Harris and wife, Elizabeth and Curtis Harris and friend, Carolyn, all of Tazewell, James Ivan Harris and wife, Wanda, Curvin Harris and wife, Peggy, and Carter Harris, all of Swords Creek,; sisters, Hester Hess of Swords Creek, Madeline Boyd and her husband, Roy of Richlands, and Delores Honaker and husband, Scott of Raven; special friend, Sally Breedlove of Swords Creek, several nieces and nephews.

Donald J. Reedy
Donald Joseph Reedy, Sr., 72, of Richlands, died Oct. 11, 2006 at a Richlands hospital.
Born July 9, 1934 in Richlands, he was the son of the late Clyde and Ethel Cox Reedy.
He was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Reedy and Carl Reedy, and one sister, Helen Costello.
Survivors: wife of 51 years, Kathleen Spencer Reedy; daughter, Diane Cole and husband, Rick, of Wardell; son, Donnie Reedy, Jr. of Richlands; sisters, Betty Harrison and Jean Pruitt, both of Richlands, Pauline Cox and husband, Jim, of Ft. Pierce, FL, Mary Evans and husband, Daniel, of Riverside, CA; brother, Jimmy Reedy and wife, Pauline, of Richlands; grandsons, Houston Cole and Josh Reedy; and several nieces and nephews.

Martha Elizabeth Vencill
Martha Elizabeth Brown Vencill, 80, of Richlands, died Oct. 13, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following an illness of several weeks.
She was born in Tazewell County and was the daughter of the late Robert Henry and Cynthia Matilda Brewster Brown, both Tazewell County natives.
She had made her home in Richlands for the last 30 years and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Wayne Vencill; one son-in-law, Cecil Ray Melton; and one sister, Dolly Mae Brown.
Survivors: husband of 62 years, Homer M. Vencill; daughters, Cara Margarette Melton and Patsy Deloris Vencill, both of Richlands; sons, Robert Millard Vencill and wife, Alice, of Mechanicsville, Guy Thomas Vencill and wife, Debra, of Richlands; brother, James Henry Brown and wife, Arrene; nephew, Ricky Brown; grandchildren, Lisa K.
