John Thomas Ziats, Sr.
John Thomas Ziats, Sr., 85, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 9, 2006 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born June 9, 1920 at Bobtown, PA, he was a son of the late Joseph and Pauline Kinvisky Ziats.
He was a member of the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and Holy Name Society of Itnatius Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local #6025 of Bishop and J.L. Mine Local #6159.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jones Ziats, and one son, John T. Ziats, Jr.
Survivors: grandson, Thomas Matthew Ziats of Bland; brother, Frank Ziats of Bobtown, PA; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Matney of North Tazewell.
A Mass of Christian Burial Service was held at 8 p.m. Jan. 11 at the St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Tazewell with Father Dan Brady officiating.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell, where military graveside rites were given by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.
Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.
Gary Adkins
Gary Adkins, 59, of Pounding Mill, died Jan. 6, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Pikeville, KY, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mignon Potter Adkins of Morristown, TN.
He was a member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ. He was a 1968 graduate of Pikeville College and received his masters from VPI. He was a retired school teacher for Buchanan County School System with 30 years of service and a Past Master in the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 AF&AM.
Additional survivors: wife of 34 years, Bonnie Deel Adkins; sisters, Nina Phillips of Indianapolis, IN, Diana Taylor of Grundy; brother, Jeff Adkins of Lexington, KY; and a very special mother-in-law, Dorothy Deel of Richlands.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with The Evangelist Mike Trent and Rev. Gerald Stacy officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
A Masonic service was conducted by Masonic Lodge #260 AF & AM Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home
Carol S. Ball
Carol Sharon Stinson Ball, 58, of Lebanon, died Jan. 5, 2006 in a Lebanon nursing facility.
Born Dec. 27, 1947 in Lebanon, she was a daughter of the late Walker and Mamie Ray Stinson.
She was a lifelong resident of the Russell County area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Stinson, and one sister, Edith Lell.
Survivors: husband, Lowell Ball of Big A Mountain; daughter, Kimberly Joyce and husband, Curtis, of Honaker; brothers, Bill Stinson of Bristol, TN, Jerry Stinson and wife, Linda, of Lebanon; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Stinson and Mary Lou Stinson, both of Lebanon; grandchildren, Alexander Joyce and Erin Joyce, both of Honaker; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Chris Musick officiating.
Interment followed in the Ball Family cemetery on Big A Mountain.
Billy "Junie" Boothe, Jr.
Billy "Junie" Boothe, Jr., 61, of North Tazewell, fell asleep in Jesus Jan. 6, 2006 in the comforts of his home surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 29, 1944 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late William Boothe, Sr. and Hettie Brewster Boothe.
He was a member of the Adria Advent Christian Church, where he lovingly and honorably served as an usher and deacon. He loved his Lord and faithfully served him. He loved to sing and play his harmonica in church. He was a wonderful example and a blessing to all that knew him.
He was employed by L & G Auction of North Tazewell and proudly served as an auctioneer. He previously worked at Lambert Packing Co. of Squire, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Stella Lambert and husband, Jules, with whom he made his home; brothers, James Boothe, Roy Boothe, Frank Boothe, Harold Boothe and George Boothe; and sister, Mary Hall.
He was a loving uncle to David Lambert, his caregiver, J. L. (Punky) Lambert and wife, Beckie, Mike Lambert and wife, Ramona, Mary Gilbert and husband, Marcus, Wanda Thomas and husband, John, and special family friend, Jeff Shelton, all of North Tazewell; brother to Euva Walbeck and Mallie White of Brooksville, FL; great uncle to Aaron, Amanda, and Michael Lambert, Nathan Thomas and Callie Gilbert. He leaves behind a host of friends that will greatly miss him. His love for everyone was evident in the beautiful life he lived and the example he gave.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Anna James "Jimmie" Smith Bowen
Anna James "Jimmie" Smith Bowen, 88, of the Cove area in Tazewell, died Jan. 5, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
She was the widow of the late Rees Tate (June) Bowen VI and had lived in the Cove for the last 57 years.
She was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Russell County and was the daughter of the late James Thomas Smith and Anna Lee Gilkeson Smith.
She attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William & Mary (now Virginia Commonwealth) in Richmond. Upon graduation, she worked at a Settlement House (Friendship House) in Washington, D. C. During World War II, she served in the Red Cross and was stationed at a psychiatric hospital in Kentucky. She taught first and second grade for 18 years at the Cove Elementary School (Tazewell County). She was a member of the Cove Church and the Elk Garden United Methodist Church.
Survivors: sons, Rees T. Bowen VII and wife, Sallie, and George Bowen and wife, Donna, all of Maiden Springs, Tom Bowen and wife, Liz, of Weber City; grandchildren, Rees T. Bowen VIII, James T. Bowen II, and Hanna W. Hagy; great grandchild, Landon D. Fleisher; sister-in-law, Irene Cecil Bowen Wendell of Rosedale; nephew, J.H.A. Smith of Rosedale; and nieces, Ann Wade Godwin of Fishersville and Nancy Aker Cross of Lebanon.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Cove Church located at Maiden Springs Road, U. S. Hwy 91, with the Rev. Larry Ramey and Dr. Thomas Conley officiating.
Private graveside services were conducted at the Bowen Family cemetery.

Clay Shaw Cole
Clay Shaw Cole, 53, of Richlands, died Jan. 4, 2006 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Whitewood, he was a son of Ava D. Cole of Richlands and the late Claude S. Cole.
He was a former security guard for Mattie Williams Hospital and a former volunteer with the Whitewood Rescue Squad. He had lived most of his life in Whitewood and was of the Baptist Faith.
He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend.

Cole; daughter, Elizabeth Denise Proffitt of Richlands; four step-children; sisters, Lorene Huffman and husband, Bobby, of Denver, NC, Pauline Casey of Jewell Ridge, Kathleen Green and husband, Larry, of Charlotte, NC, Janice Quick and husband, Clyde, of Okeechobee, FL, Pat Quick and husband, Russ, of Abingdon, Wanda Lowe and Danny of Richlands; brother, Claude Cole and wife, Rita, of Richlands; nine grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Barry Absher, Rev. Jerry Stone, Rev. R.B. Lambert and Mrs. Phyllis Simmons.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Geraldine F. Davis
Geraldine Florence Reedy Davis, 66, of Richlands, died Jan. 2, 2006 at her home.
Born June 4, 1939 in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Mildred Jones Reedy.
She was a member of the Church of Living God in Jesus Name.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Morrow and Janice (Jink) Johnson, and two brothers, James Reedy and Claude Reedy, Jr.
Survivors: husband of 41 years, Carl Davis; daughter, Karen Davis of the home; brothers, Fred Reedy and wife, Wanda, of Swords Creek, Jack Reedy of Cedar Bluff; and sister, Shelvia Dye and husband, Jack, of Piedmont, AL.
The funeral was conducted Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Kenneth Pruitt officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Norma Jane Dye
Norma Jane Dye "Jane" died Jan. 6, 2006 at Wacamaw Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 9, 1935 in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Flem and Nora Vance Hicks.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and soon to be great grandmother.
She enjoyed being with her family, it is what put that sparkle in her eyes.
She and her husband, Frank, have lived in Myrtle Beach since 1998.
She was preceded in death by one son, Leslie Ray Dye; one sister, Caroline Shelton; one brother, Ralph Donald Hicks; and stepfather, Tom Hackney.
Survivors: husband, Frank, of 54 years; brothers, Frank Hicks and Melvin Hicks of Florida, Joe Hicks of Michigan; sister, Freda Moore of Maryland; daughters, Mary Alice Hill and husband, Greg, of Myrtle Beach, Patsy Reed and husband, Wayne, and Pamela Nicholson and husband, Kevin, all of Maryland, Jeanette Stanley and husband, Marvin, of Garden City; and grandchildren, Samuel Luke Dye, Michael Allen Dye, Kevin Lee Nicholson, Kenneth Troy Nicholson, Tiffany Ann Reed and Wayne Edward Reed "Bud" all of Maryland.
Memorial services will be held at Grand Strand Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, SC, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. as well as a memorial held in Maryland Jan. 21 at the College Park Moose Lodge #453 from 1 p.m. 3 p.m.

Gladys Graham Edmonds
Gladys Graham Edmonds, 91, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 2, 2006 at her home.
Born Jan. 5, 1914 in Cliffield, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Sarah Matilda Earls Graham.
She was a member of the Tazewell Family Worship Center. She worked in the Meat Department of Deskins Supermarket in Tazewell and retired after 21 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Audrey H. Edmonds; one sister, Molly Peery; six brothers, Clarence Graham, George Graham, William Graham, Frank Graham, Shields Graham, and John B. Graham, II; a special grandson, David Peery; three nieces, Phyllis Peery Fox, Shirley Graham Hart and Carol Graham; and one nephew, Dale Graham.
Survivors: daughters, Alma Peery, and husband, Marshall, of North Tazewell, Betty Farmer and husband, John, of Roanoke; sons, Dwight Edmonds and wife, Nancy, of Live Oak, FL, Daniel Edmonds and wife, Barbara, of Manly, IA; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

Peggy Lou Fields
Peggy Lou Kegley Fields, 76, of Delaware, OH, formerly of Russell County, died Jan. 2, 2006 at Sarah Moore Home in Delaware, OH.
Born Nov. 17, 1929 in Finney, she was a daughter of the late Bowen and Destie Kegley.
She had lived in Ohio for over 25 years, moving there from Lebanon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Fields, Jr.; three sisters, Jewell Smith, Betty Dye, and Violet Artrip; and one brother, Miles Kegley.
Survivors: son, John W. Fields and wife, Kathy, of Rutledge, TN; daughters, Judy Gayle Ray of Delaware, OH, Mona Lynn Rayburn and husband, Toby, of Ashley, OH; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 5 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Esteel Williams officiating.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
