Thurman P. Conn
Thurman P. Conn, 59, of Fenton, MI, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 26, 2006.
Born in Tazewell, he was one of 13 children born to the late William and Artha Conn.
He was a proud native of Tazewell where many of his dearest friends and family still reside. He moved to Fenton in 1964 and graduated from Fenton High School in 1965. He patriotically served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He valued time with his family and loved them dearly. A member of First Baptist Church for nearly 40 years, he enjoyed classic hymns and playing the piano.
Since retiring from General Motors in 2004, he worked on his 1968 Corvette, traveled and learned the game of golf.
He was preceded in death by siblings Russell, Clinton, Clifford, Walker and Alicia Conn.
Survivors: loving wife, Carol; four children, Eric Conn, wife Sheryl and children Chelsea and Alli of Fenton; April Parillo, husband Mark and children Ben, Jake and Andrew of Clarkston; Sarah Styf and husband Dan of Vienna; and Katie Conn of Chicago, IL; and wife Carol’s three children, Sara Sharp of San Antonio, TX; Brent Sharp and wife Sabrina of Fenton; and Cari Sharp and daughter Madison of Flint; brothers, Buford, Adron and Ben Conn; and sisters, Dorothy Herald, Shirley Bowling, Phyllis Rodriguez and Patricia Fisher.
The funeral was held at First Baptist Church in Fenton at 11 a.m. Jan. 30.
Burial was at the Great Lakes National cemetery.
Sharp Funeral Home in Fenton was in charge of arrangements.
Jettie I. Jones
Jettie I. Jones, 82, of Richlands, widow of the late Robert Ira Jones, Sr., died Feb. 5, 2006 at the Golden Age Retirement Home in Claypool Hill following a lengthy illness.
Born in Drill, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Hess and Martha Brown, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in Richlands for the past 56 years and was a retired employee of the Clinch Valley Clinic Hospital. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church as well as a former member of the Richlands Rebekah Lodge.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Grady Hess.
Survivors: daughter, Charlotte Jewell and husband, Dale, of Pembroke; son, Robert Jones and wife, Peggy, of Bristol, TN; sister, Pinkie Killen of Richlands; foster brother, Troy Vance of Grundy; grandchildren, Kathy Crockett, Scott Thomas, Ronnie Jewell, Jr., Jill Jewell Barr, Bobby Jones, and Keith Jones; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Bill Shook officiating.
Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Edith Irene Lewis
Edith Irene Dickens Lewis, 64, of Tazewell, died Feb. 2, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital.
Born at Horsepen, she was a daughter of the late Harley and Bittie Stilwell Dickens.
She had made her home in the Tazewell area all her life. She was a homemaker, loving mother and loving child of God. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed doing crafts. She attended Tazewell First Assembly of God and was a member of Horsepen Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice Cook and Olivine Buchanan, and two brothers, Truman Dickens and Clinton Dickens.
Survivors: daughters, Tammy Lewis and Tracie Lewis of the home; brother, Coy Dickens and wife, Jeanie, of Abbs Valley; several special nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews; her beloved pet, Jax; special friend that she considered as one of her daughters, Honey Sue Short-Bird.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell with Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.
Interment followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
Marie Shortt Lowe
Marie Shortt Lowe, 89, of Swords Creek, died Jan. 30, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1916 she was a daughter of the late Elbert Lee and Clara Virginia Coleman Shortt.
A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area, she was a member of Horton Ridge Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Salyers; husband, Claude Lowe; two daughters, Innas Bernice Vance and Ocie Mae Vance; three sisters, Ocie Mae Shortt, Ida Belle Newberry and Stella Keen; two brothers, Lawrence Shortt and Roy Shortt; one grandson, Rick Miller and one great-grandson, Desperado Gage Miller.
Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Doris Yvonne and Larry G. Miller of Honaker, Wanda Carol and Ferd Ellis Miller of Knoxville, TN; sister, Hazel Beatrice Dugger of Oak Lawn, IL; brother, Elbert Lee Shortt, Jr. of Raven; grandchildren, Wayne Miller, Gene Miller, June Ann Miller, Curt Eric Miller, Kelvin Kliest, Teresa Hensman, Jody Triplett, Ann Triplett, Larry Gene Miller, Jr., Anthony Wayne "Tony" Miller and Clifford Allen Miller; several great-grandchildren; honorary grandson, David Miller; and special friend, Melissa Hughes.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Robinson, Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Dennis White.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Leo Cook McCoy
Leo Cook McCoy, 85, of the Baptist Valley Section of North Tazewell, died Feb. 6, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Indian Creek in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Goffery and Bessie Mae Wilson Cook.
She had made her home at Baptist Valley and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had been an employee of General Instrument for ten years. She was a member of Dailey’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over 40 years and was a member of the Dailey’s Chapel Quilting Guild, both of which she loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow "Woody" McCoy Jan. 25, 1994; four brothers, an infant, Ed, Ellis and Baxter Cook; and one sister, Mildred Marie Cook.
Survivors: daughters, Carol Sue Moore and husband, Noah, of Cedar Bluff, Barbara Ann Presley and husband, Jerry, of Baptist Valley; sisters, Trula Poskas and husband, Mike, of North Tazewell, Betty Boyd and husband, Byron, of Dublin; grandchildren, Sue Ellen Presley-Talbert and husband, Jim, of Tazewell, Tony Presley and wife, Jamie, of Baptist Valley, Gary Moore and wife, Debbie, of Cedar Bluff; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Megan, Matthew, Katelyn, Elisabeth and Eden; and several nieces and nephews.

Nannie Loma Mullins
Nannie Loma Elswick Mullins, 80, of Salem, formerly of Doran, died Feb. 3, 2006 in a Salem hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Bearwallow, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Carley Young Elswick, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in the Bearwallow area for the first 19 years of her life and moved to the Spruce Pine area where she made her home for 43 years. She then moved to the Doran area in 1987 and made her home until last year before she became a resident of the Richfield Nursing Home in Salem. She was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Mullins; one daughter, Edith Jeanette Mullins; and four brothers, Lacy, Straley, Brady, and Alvin Elswick.
Survivors: daughters, Loretta Cook and husband, Arlen, of Okeechobee, FL, Dolly Jackson and husband, Ira, Jr. of Jewell Ridge; son, Kenneth Mullins and wife, Joyce, of Elliston; sister, Lola Sparks of Richlands; grandchildren, Greta Reedy, Gregory Cook, Eric Cook, Rebecca Lewis, and Wesley Mullins; 11 great grandchildren; and special caregivers, Cathy Clifton, Jerry Dunford, Tammy Wright, Pat Rife, Jim Shaffer, and Sadie Shaffer.

James B. Overby (Speedy)
James B. Overby (Speedy), 65, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 30, 2006 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1940 in North Tazewell, he was the son of the late John B. Overby and Annie Marie Crawford Overby.
He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 30 years and a member of the Tazewell Congregation. He was a graduate of Tazewell High School and a member of the Football Team. He attended barber school in Richmond and cut hair at the Crippled Children’s Hospital in Richmond. He was owner and operator of the Ideal Barber Shop of Tazewell for over 40 years. He graduated from McLaine Business School in Bluefield, WV and received his Associates Degree in Arts in 1962.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Mabel Louise Brunty; and brother-in-law, Ernie Brunty.
Survivors: wife, Lillian Juanita Overby; daughter, Jeannie Lynn Overby; maternal uncle, Jess Crawford of North Tazewell; brother-in-law, Ralph Brunty and wife, Dorothy, of Charleston, WV; sisters-in-law, Geneva Lovell and husband, Frank, of Newport News, Sharon Mester and husband, Kendall, of Emden, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 4 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Minister Kermit Fowler, Sr. of Athens, WV officiating, assisted by Minister Billiray Armstrong of the Tazewell Congregation.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Lillian Rebecca Patton
Lillian Rebecca Mathena Patton, 92, of Springville, died Feb. 4, 2006 at Carrington Place, Wytheville.
She was born June 30, 1913, in Interior to the late Ezra and Ola Mathena. She was a member of the Springville Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Charles Everett Patton; one sister, Bea Heldreth; and three brothers, Al, June and Harold Mathena. Her kindness and loving sense of humor was felt by everyone who was blessed to know her.
Survivors: sons, Lester Patton and wife, Lois, of Orlando, FL, Charles Patton and wife, Nancy, of Springville, Curtis Lane Patton and wife, Doris, of Roanoke; daughters, Zane Campbell and husband, Ron, of Bluefield, VA, Charlotte Bass and husband, Bob, of Wytheville; grandchildren, Chris Stephenson, Bill Patton, Karen McKenney, Andy Patton, Todd Patton, Mike Patton, Shawn Patton, Brad Patton, Kelly Patton, Chris Compton and Monica Compton; seven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with Pastor Johnny Elmore and Rev. Ray Amos officiating.
Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.

Rev. Cecil C. Presley, Sr.
Rev. Cecil C. Presley, Sr., 79, of Abingdon, was called home to be with the Lord Feb. 5, 2006 at a Chilhowie health center.
Born Sept. 25, 1926 in Council, he was a son of the late P.E. Presley and Maude Wampler Presley.
He was a retired pastor, having pastured several churches throughout southwest Virginia and Maryland. Although retired as a pastor, he never stopped delivering the message of God through his ministry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Violet Mullins Presley; one brother, C.A. "Ashby" Presley; and one half-sister, Emma Tiller.
Survivors: wife, Gay Presley; daughters, Lana Clear and husband, Charles, of Saltville, Brenda Dawkins of West Columbia, SC, Sarita Surber and husband, Tim, of Saltville; sons, Timothy Presley and wife, Mary, of West Columbia, Clyde Presley and wife, Reva, of Chilhowie; step-daughter, Patty Mumpower of Bristol, VA; sister-in-law, Shirley Presley of Charlottesville; nephew, Brad Presley of Charlottesville; uncle, Jack Wampler and wife, Marty, of Naples, FL; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of friends and family.

Interment followed in the Presley cemetery at Council.
Edna Mae Pruett
Edna Mae Pruett, 88, of Clinton, MD, formerly of Tazewell, died Feb. 5, 2006 at the Southern Maryland Medical Center in Clinton.
Born June 29, 1917 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Rasnick Robinette.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sanders Bramble Pruett, three sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: daughter, Shirley White and husband, Fred, of Clinton, with whom she made her home; son, Douglas Pruett and wife, Lynn, of Stafford; grandsons, Timothy Pruett, Blake Pruett, Lance Pruett, and Danny White, Sr.; granddaughter, Michelle White; great grandsons, Danny Lee White, Jr., Nicholas Lee White, and Matthew Douglas Pruett; great granddaughters, Laura Lee White and Caitlin Pruett; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 10 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Wayne Proffitt officiating.
Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Stuart T. Remines
Stuart Thompson Remines, 84, of Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 3, 2006 in a Bluefield hospital.
He was born Nov. 11, 1921 in Thompson Valley and was the son of the late William Remines and Lillie Kinder Remines.
He retired from U.S. Steel in 1986 after 31 years of service as a welder, mechanic and a foreman. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Front as a First Class Boatswain Mate. He had lived in the Bluefield area all of his life, was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Midway Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar "Doc" Remines, James "Jimmer" Remines and Bill Remines, and one sister, Katie Hill.
Survivors: wife of 58 years, Anna Lucille Remines, of Bluefield, VA; sons, Steve and Brenda Remines of Bluefield, VA, Charlie and Beverly Remines of Midlothian; daughter, Linda and Bill Moore of Virginia Beach; brothers, Charles "Clyde" Remines of Salem, William "Shorty" Remines of Bluefield, VA; sister, Ella Belcher of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren, John Remines, Chuck Remines, Cathy Remines, Cindy and Andy Hatfield, Jeff and Jenn Moore, Kristy Moore, Kellie Remines, Jared Remines and Jake Remines; and great-grandchildren, Chase Remines and Kaitlyn Moore.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 6 at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, at 2 p.m. with Pastors Dan Webb and Lacy Brooks officiating.
Burial followed in the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA.
