Robert "Frank" Goff
Robert "Frank" Goff, 53, of Council, died Feb. 7, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Nov. 9, 1952 in Richlands, he was a son of Ermma Joyce Pack Goff of Doran and the late Landrum Franklin Goff.
A lifelong resident of the Southwest Virginia area, he was a 1971 graduate of Richlands High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College where he earned an Associates Degree in applied science in mining. He held several certifications in various electrical capacities. He was an employee of Dominion/Jewel Smokeless Coal Corporation since 1976, serving his last four years as a supervisor in the electrical department. Aside from his vast knowledge and accomplishments in the mining field, he was a fan of many sports and an avid golfer.
He was a Christian of Baptist faith and attended Corinth Baptist Church at Council. Robert, known by most as "Frank" was a loving, sincere and honest man. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, son, and friend. He was admired and looked upon by many as a leader and problem solver, one who could be counted on in any crisis. He brought joy and happiness to everyone that knew him. He will indeed be dearly missed by so many.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Jim Huffman officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Edith Louise Harris
Edith Louise Harris, 85, of Abingdon, died Feb. 12, 2006 in an Abingdon hospital.
Born Aug. 5, 1920 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late James Harvey and Mary Alta Fuller Clark.
She spent most of her life in the Drill area, moving to Abingdon area 18 years ago. She was a member of the Main Street Free Will Baptist Church in Abingdon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly L. Harris; one sister, Mary Phares; one brother, Pershing Clark; one granddaughter, Sharon Kay Maloy; two grandsons, Jeffery Harris and Douglas Miller; and one great-grandson, Jason Maloy.
Survivors: daughters, Shirley Miller and friend, Wayne Freeman, of Denham Springs, LA, Glenda Lowe and husband, Roby, of Lebanon; sons, Malcolm Harris and wife, Martha, of Mt. Carmel, TN, Harold Harris and wife, Narcie, of Honaker, Dallas Harris and wife, Violet, of Bristol, TN; sisters, Mamie Honaker of Lebanon, Lucy Mann of Beaver, WV; brothers, Eugene Clark of Beckley, WV, Donald Clark of Attlecorns, MA; special friend, Jean Miller; grandchildren, Alesia Hess, Michael Harris, Brian Lowe, Rhonda Compton, Stevie Harris, Donna Perkins, and Patricia Miller; twelve great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Peerman Lester, Rev. Rick Lester, and Rev. Daniel Richardson officiating.
Interment will follow in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Mae Watkins Hitch
Mae Watkins Hitch, 98, of Lebanon, died Feb. 10, 2006 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Knox County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Riley and Zora Frazier Watkins, both Kentucky natives.
She had made her home in the Cincinnati, OH and Ft. Lauderdale, FL areas most of her life before moving to Lebanon five years ago. She was a retiree of Jordan-Marsh Department Stores in Ft. Lauderdale and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. Hitch; four sisters, Elizabeth Gabbenesh, Glenna Dullagahn, Wilma Klump and Alpha (Tommie) Jackson; and one brother, Riley Watkins.
Survivors: nieces, Zora Hillman, Susie Jackson, and Nancy Davis; nephews, Howard Klump, Wayne Klump, Larry Watkins, and Walter Gabbenesch; and special caregiver, Mae Perkins.
Graveside services were conducted Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with the Rev. Jeff Williams officiating.
Interment followed.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands was in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Ann McBride-Jackson
Mary Ann McBride-Jackson, 79, of the Mudfork community of Tazewell County, went to be with the Lord Feb. 12, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 7, 1926 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Rufus (Britt) McBride and Sallie Wright McBride.
She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity, freely giving of her time and meager resources to anyone in need. She will be greatly missed by all that had the blessing of knowing her. She had retired from the Town of Bluefield, VA and had worked for the Tazewell County Senior Program.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Jackson; one great grandson, Aaron Wright; one sister, Nancy Jackson; and one brother, "Joe Boy" McBride.
Survivors: daughters, Maxine Childers and husband, Bill, of Rocky Gap, Pansy Pruett and husband, Sammy, of the Mudfork community of Tazewell County, Martha Scarberry and husband, Clell, of Pikeville, KY, Judy Grizzel and husband, Terry, of Springville; sons, "Jake" Jackson and wife, Brenda, of the Mudfork community of Tazewell County, Andy Jackson and Bernard Jackson, both of Springville; 14 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren who lovingly called her "Maw-Maw Jack"; sisters, Elizabeth Bradley and Ella Marrs and husband, Ed, all of North Tazewell, Mamie Lou Caudill and husband, Dean, of Mars, PA; brothers, Ralph McBride and wife, Evelyn, of Valencia, PA, Clarence McBride and wife, Jo, of North Tazewell; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 15 at Brown’s Chapel United Methodist Church in the Mudfork community of Tazewell County with the Rev. Gregory Hodges officiating.
Burial will follow at the Brown’s Chapel Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 14 and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church Feb. 15.

Harley P. Kinney
Harley P. Kinney, 74, of Palmetto died Feb. 9, 2006.
He was a son of Edward and Elsie Wenzel Kinney. He was born Nov. 12, 1931 in Rogers City, MI and came to Manatee County in 1958 from Blacksburg. He graduated from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI.
After serving in the Korean War in the 82nd Airborne, he graduated with a degree in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg. Since the time of school superintendent J. Hartley Blackburn, he was architect for a number of schools in Manatee County as well as many local banks and residences. He was former president of Bradenton Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Louise Kinney.
Survivors: wife of 52 years, Virginia Van Dyke Kinney; son, Edward R. Kinney of Boulder, CO; daughters, Patricia (Nikola) Hrabar of Boca Raton, FL, Susanna (Randy) Coleman of Bristol, VA; and grandchildren, Christopher Coleman, Marcus Coleman and Annie Mae Coleman, all of Bristol, VA.
A gathering of friends was held Feb. 11, 5-7 p.m. at the Bradenton Country Club.

Patsy Iris Little, 63, of Lebanon, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died Feb. 10, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital following a long illness.
Born at Red Ash, she was the daughter of the late Henry Lee White, Sr. and Mary Ann Boyd White.

Morland Jackson (Virgil) Rose
Morland Jackson (Virgil) Rose, 71, of Jewell Ridge, died Feb. 7, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Sept. 26, 1934 in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Tivis and Effie Perrigan Rose.
He was a coal miner and was a member of Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jackie Rose and Ricky Lynn Rose; three brothers, Earl Rose, Gerald Rose and Burlin Rose; and one infant sister.

Elbert Lee Shortt, Jr.
Elbert Lee Shortt, Jr., 72, of Doran, died Feb. 11, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Elbert and Virginia Coleman Shortt. He was a retired coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Brown Shortt; two brothers, Lawrence Shortt and Roy Shortt; and four sisters, Stella Keen, Ocie Shortt, Ida Newberry and Marie Lowe.
Survivors: special friend, Frances Plaster; daughters, Linda White and husband, Steve, of Baptist Valley, Debbie Lowe and husband, Rick, of Doran, Tammy Holmes and husband, Kenny, of Richlands, Virginia Cook and husband, Larry, of Lawrence, KY; sons, Lawrence Shortt and wife, Ann, of Richlands, Michael Shortt and wife, Pat, of Doran, Terry Shortt and wife, Sherry, of Pilgrim Knob; sisters, Bee Dugger of Illinois, Doris Miller of Honaker; 19 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe L. Sparks
Joe L. Sparks, 79, of the Wittens Mill area of North Tazewell, died Feb. 9, 2006 at his home.
Born Aug. 13, 1926 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Walter and Virginia Compton Sparks. He was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Walter Sparks; two brothers, Walter (Witten) Sparks and Dallas Sparks; one sister, Geneva White; his half brother, George Sparks; and several other half brothers.
Survivors: wife of 59 years, Nancy Sparks; sons, Roy Sparks and Jeff Sparks, both of the home, Roger Sparks of Bealton, George Sparks and Dale Sparks, both of Hillsville; daughter, Bernice Tibbs and husband, John, of Tazewell; sister, Juanita Abel of Tazewell; brother, Ted Sparks of Tazewell; half brother, Arbert Sparks of Kentucky; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Jerry Ray Addison
Jerry Ray Addison, 50, of Richlands, died Feb. 5, 2006 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Peggy Wilson Addison of Richlands and the late Earl Addison, Jr.
He was a retired coal miner having worked for Island Creek Coal Company V.P.3. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands and attended Church of the Living God in Jesus Name at Doran.
Additional survivors: sisters, Becky Jackson and daughter, Amanda, of Richlands, Rita Boyd and husband, Iles, of Raven; brothers, David Lee Addison and wife, Darlene, and Bobby Wayne Addison and wife, Sherri, all of Richlands, James P. Addison and wife, Nancy, of Madison, WV; aunts, Dorothy Horn and Patsy Allison and husband, Scotty; great-aunt, Hazel Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Ray Edward Amos
Ray Edward Amos, 64, of Bluefield, VA, died Jan. 15, 2006 in a Bluefield hospital.
Born in Bluefield, VA, he was the son of Ethel Louise Johnson Amos of Wytheville and the late Clarence Edward Amos.
He was of the Protestant faith and had attended Graham High School.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Monroe Amos.

Dennis L. Byrd, Sr.
Dennis L. Byrd, Sr., 60, of Chicago, IL, formerly of Raven, died Feb. 2, 2006 in Chicago.
Born in Raven, he was the son of the late John Harvey Byrd and Lola Mary Newberry.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Lee Byrd, Walter Byrd and Jack Byrd.
Survivors: wife, Marilyn Byrd; son, Dennis Byrd, Jr. and wife, Annette, of Chicago; sisters, Nancy Dye and Shirley Trammell, both of Richlands; brothers, William Howard Byrd and wife, Myrel, of Doran, Danny Wayne Byrd and wife, Freda, of Jewell Ridge; sisters-in-law, Emma Gay Byrd and Carol Byrd; grandson, Jacob Byrd; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at Herdegen-Brieske Funeral Home in Chicago.
