Aileen Altizer Brown
Aileen Altizer Brown, 76, of Pilgrims Knob, died Mar. 2, 2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
Born May 3, 1929 at Amonate, she was the daughter of the late Samuel (Slick) and Essie Altizer.
She was born as Aileen Altizer but was known to family and friends as Al.
She attended Garden High School and was later inducted into the Garden High School Hall of Fame for her outstanding contribution to girls basketball.
She spent her life as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Brown, and two brothers, Willis Altizer and Wade Altizer.
She left behind a son, Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Glenna, from Richlands and her most precious gifts ever, granddaughter Ally and grandson Corey, which were the light of her life.
She will be sorely missed by her brothers and sisters, Sam Altizer of Abingdon; Tootsie Matney and husband, Raymond, of Oakwood, JoAnn Johnson and Peggy Webb and husband, Johnny, all of Keen Mountain, Janie Coleman and husband, Roger, of Deel; brother-in-law, Hurtle Brown of Ocala, FL; and sister-in-law, Rethal Brown of Pilgrims Knob. She was blessed with loving nieces and nephews not to mention selfless neighbors who she considered part of her family.
A celebration of her life was held Mar. 4 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Home in Keen Mountain with Minister Chris Webb officiating.
Burial followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
Leonard W. Brown, Jr.
Leonard W. Brown, Jr., 55, of Richlands, died Mar. 2, 2006 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late Leonard W. Brown, Sr. and Celia Mae Coleman Brown, both Buchanan County natives.
He was a graduate of Grundy Senior High Class of 1968. He attended SVCC and received an Associates Degree in Mining Technology. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. He worked for CNX Gas Corporation of Claypool Hill as a drilling and construction foreman. He was a member of the Planning Commission for the Town of Richlands and in his spare time he was a realtor for Fortune Realty.
Survivors: son, Leonard W. Brown, III and wife, Virna, of Planesville, MA; sister, Sondra K. Brown of Bristol, TN; brother, Gary W. Brown and wife, Nadine, of Bristol, TN; and grandchildren, Courtney and Kayla Brown
The funeral was conducted Mar. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands.
Entombment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens located at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside services were conducted by the members of the Casey-Short VFW Post 9640.
Cecil Casey
Cecil Casey, 80, of the Robinson Ridge section of Swords Creek, died Mar. 6, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Sept. 4, 1925 in Pine Creek, he was a son of the late Ezra Lincous and Bertha Dye Casey.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a retired equipment operator with Virginia Department of Transportation. A World War II veteran having served in the United States Army 90th Division during the Normandy Invasion, he received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and a European Occupation Metal. He was a member of the American Legion #208, the VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, the 90th Division Association, and a past member of the Odd Fellows.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Casey; two brothers, Garnett Casey and Jim Casey; and three sisters, Eula Casey, Evelyn Warner and Mary Ellen Jackson.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Brian and LaDon Casey of Castlewood; sisters, Viola Warner of Richmond, Lena Helton of Cleveland; brothers, Ed Casey and George Casey, both of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Mar. 9 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Dennis White, Rev. Woody Scott, and Rev. Ralph Bostic officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
James Carlos Chambers
James Carlos Chambers, 79, of North Tazewell, went to be with the Lord Mar. 3, 2006.
Born Feb. 16, 1927 in Raven, he was a son of the late Don Carlos Chambers and Mary Bowers Chambers.
He was a member of the Adria Advent Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Pearl Ianuzzi, Helen Poff, and Nannie Mae Flanagin, and two brothers, Dewey Chambers and George Chambers.
Survivors: wife, Ruth Bowling Chambers; son, James L. Chambers of North Tazewell; three granddaughters; one great grandson; brothers, Andrew Chambers and wife, Joyce, and Donald Chambers and wife, Janice, all of North Tazewell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 6 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Lorren B. Combs
Lorren B. Combs, 53, of Davenport, died Feb. 28, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Jan. 26, 1953 in Davenport, she was a daughter of Ines Sullivan Ball of Davenport and the late Roy Ball.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Holiness faith. She was a 1972 graduate of Council High School.
Additional survivors: husband, Randall Combs; step-sons, Mark Combs and wife, Angela, and Matthew Combs, all of Council, Barry Combs and wife, Jennifer, of Waterloo, IA; sisters, Wilma Sue Greene and Pauline Austin and husband, Donnie, all of Davenport, her twin sister, Adeline Presley and husband, Harvey Loman, of Rosedale, Betty Louise Compton and husband, Ronnie, of Grundy, Lena Marie Presley of Lebanon; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Mar. 2 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Shirley Jean Delaney
Shirley Jean (Mitchell) Delaney "Shelbie", 67, of Roanoke, died Mar. 1, 2006 at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born Apr. 18, 1938 in Richlands.
She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends. She will forever be in our hearts.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert K. Delaney, and father, Paul W. Mitchell.
Survivors: family include daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Paul Winrod, Terry Hart, Tammy and Denver Delaney and Melanie and Eric Wimmer; mother, Ella Jones of Troy MI; brothers, Doug Mitchell and wife, Vera, of Troy, Pete Mitchell of Richlands; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Mar. 2 at 7 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem.
A service was held Mar. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus, OH.
Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Franklin D. Goss
Franklin D. Goss, 70, of Cedar Bluff, died Mar. 3, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
He was born in Virginia and was a son of the late John Luther and Rebecca Jewell Goss.
He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was a former coal miner for Pittston Coal and a member of UMWA Local #7327 Jewell Valley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Jerry, and John L. Goss, Jr.
Survivors: wife, Sonja Moore Goss; daughter, Peggy Horne and husband, Randy, of Richlands; sons, Franklin D. Goss, Jr. of Cedar Bluff, Chris Goss and wife, Lisa, of Panama City, FL; brother, Robert Goss of Bland; eight grandchildren, Jessica Goss, Cindy Goss, Amy Queen, Joseph Horne, Ryan Goss, Guindalyn Goss, Kenny Height and Eleisia Height; and great grandchildren, Gray McClellan Queen and Addy-Lane Queen.
The funeral was conducted Mar. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Max Linkous and Rev. Jerry Casey officiating.
Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
Theodore "Ted" Hall
Theodore Ray "Ted" Hall, 77, of Archdale, NC, died Feb. 28, 2006 at a VA Hospital in Salisbury, NC.
Born Nov. 6, 1928 in Falls Mills, he was the son of the late Ernest H. and Lillian Ethel Simmons Hall.
He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was formerly employed as a mechanic for Thompson Chevrolet in Thomasville, NC. He was a member of the VFW in North Carolina and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Hall Jr. and Warren Lee Hall; and one sister, Mary Alice Clark.
Survivors: wife of 49 years, Valma Sue Chisgar Hall; daughter, Deadra Weston of High Point, NC; brother, Frankie Hall and wife, Bonnie, of Falls Mills; sisters, Peggy Walk and husband, Bob, of Bluefield, VA, Barbara Ann Nelson of Ocala, FL; and grandchildren, Joel, Nicholas and Jenna Weston of High Point.
The funeral was conducted Mar. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Russell Hatfield officiating.
Burial followed in the Harry cemetery in Falls Mills.

Lorene H. Lester
Lorene Helton Lester, 66, of Rowe, died Mar. 3, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Born June 2, 1939 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Noah and Carrie Bailey Helton.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Pentecostal faith and a member of the Robinson Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church. She spent her life as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lester; one sister, Faye Reynolds Yates; and one infant brother, Curtis Helton.
Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Joe and Tina Lester of Rowe, Jeffrey and Vanessa Lester of Honaker; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie K. and Randy Lester and Tammy and Eddie Keen, all of Rowe, Phyllis and James Cassell of Bedford; grandchildren, Zachary Cassell, Jeremiah Lester, Kari Cassell, Katie Jo Lester, Josh Keen and Chance Keen; and brothers, Carlos Helton and wife, Geraldine, and Virginia and Buford Helton, all of Rowe, F.P. Pearl Lester
Pearl Lester, 80, of Doran, died Feb. 27, 2006 at a Tazewell hospital.
Born Feb. 28, 1925 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Roy and Cynthea Clark Lester.
He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Gilbert Lester; one son, Roy Lester; one grandson, Jessee Lester; one great grandson, Jeremy Lester; one step daughter, Goldie White; one step son, Jonny Clark; two step grandchildren; three brothers, Elbert Lester, Jake Lester and Leonard Lester; and one sister, May Gilbert.
Survivors: son, James Lester and wife, Ruby, of Raven; daughters, Bonnie Bower of Richlands, Barbara Hurt and husband, Estil, of Doran, Beulah Deck of Raven; step son, Henry Gilbert and wife, Beat, of Claypool Hill; brother, Carl Lester and wife, Dorothy, of Shortt Gap; 14 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; 16 step grandchildren; 38 step great grandchildren; 54 step great great grandchildren; a very special friend, Vergie Stevens; and a special grandson, Christopher Bower.

Burial followed in the Davis cemetery at Clarks Valley.
Dorthula Oaks Necessary
Dorthula Oaks Necessary, 74, died Mar. 1, 2006 in Orange Park, FL.
She was born in Lee County, and moved to Orange Park in October of 2004.
Survivors: husband, Thomas W. Necessary; sons, Samuel C., Gregory W., Mark T. and David L. Necessary; brothers, Glenn Oaks and Russell Oaks; and grandchildren, Mark I. Jr., Kelli Renee, Kent A. and Karly N. Necessary.
