Gladys Lyons Rife
Gladys Lyons Rife, 81, formerly of the Big Creek Road section of Richlands, died Nov. 5, 2005 at a Jefferson City, TN hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Newbern, she was a daughter of the late Bascom and Dillie Cressell Lyons, both natives of Newbern.
Before moving to Tennessee, she had been a resident of the Richlands area for 35 years, where she had attended the Richlands Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Rife; two sisters, Nannie Whitt and Betty Chapman; and three brothers, Lee, Malcolm and Buddy Lyons.
Survivors: daughter, Bonnie Hackney and husband, Ronald, of Pensacola, FL; sons, Rev. Phillip Rife and wife, Patricia, of Elkhorne City, KY, Leslie Rife and wife, Nancy, of Newport, TN, Allen Rife of Richlands; sisters, Martha Kinder of Jewell Ridge, Juanita Davis of Old Fort, NC, Judy Dujardin of Shelby, NC; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Richlands Church of God Building Fund, 405 Jones Chapel Road, Richlands, VA 24641.
Randy Joe Rife
Randy Joe Rife, 44, of Jewell Ridge, died Nov. 4, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Rosa Rife Ledbetter of Jewell Ridge and the late George H. Riffe.
He was a self-employed carpenter and was of the Pentecostal Faith. He had lived in the Jewell Ridge area most of his life.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Geisha Rife.
Survivors: son, Mack Allen Church of Bristol, TN; companion, Ella Mae Webb Baker; sister, Andrea Rife Chambers and husband, Jerry, of Jewell Ridge; brothers, Keith Rife and wife, Christine, Thearl Rife, Michael Rife, Kevin Rife, and Jamie Rife, all of Jewell Ridge; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and many friends.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Community Holiness Shiloh Temple Church at Pea Patch with the Rev. Billy Ward and Rev. McGinnis Rife officiating.
Interment followed in the Rife Family cemetery in Pea Patch near Jewell Ridge.

Sissie Juanita Tackett
Sissie Juanita Tackett, 62, of Rt. 638 Dismal, died Oct. 31, 2005 at her home.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Ida Mae Matney Vandyke.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Arvil Robert Hagerman; three brothers, Earl Vandyke, Cleve Vandyke and Virgil Vandyke; and three sisters, Oakie Keen, Edna Taylor and Mary Whitt.
Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Kent (Teresa) Keen of Dismal Rt., Mrs. Tobby (Melissa) Deel of Spartanburg, SC, Mrs. Kristopher (Ida) Yates of Roanoke; very, very special grandson, Adam Carlos Robert Keen; very special brother, William Vandyke of Dismal Rt.; brothers, Junior Vandyke of South Carolina, Zeke Vandyke of Tazewell; sisters, Laura Vandyke of Contrary, Polly Lester of Big Rock, Shelvy Justice of Keen Mountain, Hanna Vandyke of Patterson; and very special nieces, Rhonda Vandyke, Virgie Meadows, and Kimberly Meadows.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Paul Rife officiating.
Burial followed in the Esaw Rife cemetery at Keen Mountain.
A service was held Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary Madeline Ball
Mary Madeline Rasnake Ball, 75, of Council, died Mar. 6, 2006 in a Bristol, TN hospital.
Born Apr. 16, 1930 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Elbert and Alta Presley Rasnake.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was formerly employed as a seamstress with Honaker Mills and Lebanon Apparel for several years. She attended Trinity Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Rasnake, one daughter-in-law, Brenda Ball, and her husband, Walter Ball.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Conley Wilson of Council; son, James W. Ball of Council; sister, Arbutus Ball of Honaker; brother, William Rasnake of Honaker; special grandson, Michael Wilson and wife, Lindsey, of Christiansburg; step-grandson, Harvey Wilson and wife, Daniela, of Kingsport, TN; step-great-grandson, Shane Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Mar. 10 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. John Tiller and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment followed in the Ball cemetery at Council.
Howard Leon Casey
Howard Leon Casey, 42, of Bristol, VA, died Mar. 6, 2006 in an Abingdon hospital.
Born July 13, 1963 in Richlands, he was a son of the late Luther and Katherine Avanell Street Casey.
He had lived in Bristol for the past four years, moving there from Drill.
Survivors: sons, Luther Andrew Casey of the home, Nathaniel Leon Casey of Richlands; brothers, James Casey of Medina, OH, Earl Casey of Honaker, Fayne Casey of Drill; special adopted sister, Della Cardona of Bristol, VA; special friends, Reginald Arline, Stuart Hedge, Jessica Newcomb, Samantha Hicks, and Doris Cook; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Mar. 10 at the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Rowe with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Arvil Arwood officiating.
Interment followed in the Street cemetery at Rowe.

Artie Ellen Compton
Artie Ellen Compton, 94, of Lexington, OH, died Mar. 7, 2006 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital, Mansfield, OH, following a short illness.
She was born Aug. 17, 1911 in Swords Creek to John and Martha (Dye) Corns, and moved to Ohio in 1951.
A homemaker, she was a member of North Woodbury Free Will Baptist Church, where she served the congregation for years as organist.
She was defined by her devout faith, and immense love for her family. She fervently read her Bible daily, and faithfully watched the television programs of preachers; and when they spoke to her, she talked right back!
She will be cherished in the hearts of her family for the loving care she offered, her constant smile, and her motherly and grandmotherly concern, often tempered with admonition: "you need to get your heart right with God."
She was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. Ellis M. Compton, June 4, 1975. Also deceased are five sons-in-law, Robert Keen, Hobart Meadows, Hershel Keen, Allen Wolfe, and Bobby Gene Sesco; one grandson; one sister, Susie Corns; and four brothers, Floyd Corns, George Corns, Roy Corns and Jess Corns.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Charlotte Compton of Mansfield; daughters and a son-in-law, Gladys Bolding and Edith Meadows, both of Fredericktown, OH, Eunice and Golden Vance of Swords Creek, Arbutus Wolfe of Mansfield, Evelyn Sesco of Ontario, OH; 29 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 20 great great grandchildren; sister, Jettie Vance of Mansfield; and a large extended family.
The worship service, celebrating God’s gift of Artie Compton was held Mar. 11 at 11 a.m. in North Woodbury Free Will Baptist Church in Mount Gilead with Pastors Jimmy Thompson and Brian Phillips officiating.
Burial followed in Shauck cemetery.

Grace Keene Compton
Grace Keene Canterl Compton, 91, of the Poplar Creek section of Rt. 2, Grundy, died Mar. 10, 2006 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Harlin and Orpha Matney Keene.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Stone Coal Primitive Baptist Church. She was owner and manager of Canterl Grocery on Poplar Creek for several years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Gene Canterl, Apr. 30, 1968; her second husband, Leslie Compton, Apr. 24, 1982; four sisters, Garnett Barker, Jessie Pearl Adkins, Georgia Greer and Josephine Sutherland; and one brother, A.J. Keene.
Survivors: daughters, Gaynell and husband, Fred Morris, of Charlottesville, Ruth and husband, Delano Earnest, of Clarksville, TN, Helen and husband, J.D. Matney, of Grundy; stepdaughters, Janet Hayes of Pelion, SC, Brenda Wadson of Hartland, MI, Debby Kiser of Almont, MI; sisters, Ruby Austin and Vergie Roberts, both of Bluefield, VA, Clogene Armstrong of Lawrenceville, GA; brothers, Bob Keene and Dillard Keene, both of Tazewell, Jack Keene of Elkton, MD; granddaughter, Missy and husband, David Thompson, of Grundy; grandson, Brian and wife, Tammy Earnest, of Clarksville; and great-grandchildren, Coogan Thompson, Kimberlyn Thompson, Gabe Earnest and Brody Earnest.

Elder Robert Cooper
Elder Robert Doil Cooper, 58, of the Pea Patch section of Whitewood, died Mar. 6, 2006 in a Durham, NC, hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Pearl Wimmer Cooper of Pea Patch and the late Booker Cooper.
He had made his home in the Pea Patch area all of his life and was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Company at V.P. #1. He was a graduate of Whitewood High School Class of 1967 and an Elder and member of Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist Church at Pea Patch. He was a member of UMWA Local at Oakwood.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Christopher Cooper; three brothers, Charlie, Mearl, and Millard Cooper; and two nieces, Shirley Cooper Wimmer and Ernestine Lester.
Additional survivors: wife, Wanda Hagerman Cooper; son, Robert Shane Cooper of Stuart; sisters, Geraldine Reed and husband, Willard, and Josephine Shelton and husband, Clarence, all of Jewell Ridge, Agnes Lester and husband, Bill, Yvonne Keen and husband, Charlie, Sue Lawson and husband, Arthur, all of Whitewood; brother, Glen Cooper and wife, Sheila, of Jewell Ridge; sisters-in-law, Bertha Cooper of Whitewood, Anita Sue, of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.

Joe Bill Cordle
Joe Bill Cordle, 57, of Sugar Grove, formerly of Richlands, died Mar. 9, 2006 in a Smyth County hospital following a brief illness.
Born Dec. 1, 1948 in Richlands, he was the son of Beatrice "Bea" Shelton of Richlands and the late Ira Shelton.
He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Berley and Elizabeth Pendergrass.
Additional survivors: wife, Linda Stuart Cordle; brother, Jerry Lee Cordle and wife, Sherry, of Richlands; sisters, Michelle Sparks and husband, Ricky, and Becky Ochoa and husband, James, all of Richlands; uncle, Berley Pendergrass, Jr. and wife, Jackie; a very special nephew, Logan Ochoa; nieces, Amber Taylor and Ami Taylor; and many relatives and friends.

Fay F. Flournoy
Fay F. Flournoy, 67, of Claypool Hill, formerly of Vienna, died Mar. 7, 2006 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in England, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Veronica McDonald Fyfe.
She had made her home in the northern Virginia area most of her life and was a retired Consumer Affairs Manager for the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors: daughter, Whitney Reardon of Reston; son, Dean Reardon of Mavisdale; and grandchildren, Bridgit Kuhn, McKenzie Kuhn, and Elliott Kuhn.
A remembrance service was held Mar. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Golden Age Retirement Home at Claypool Hill.

Thelma E. Griffith
Thelma Ernestine Layne Griffith, 73, of the Elk Garden section of Lebanon, died Mar. 7, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Aug. 19, 1932 in Kimper, KY, she was a daughter of the late Willis Layne and Elsie Willamson Layne Goodwin.
She had spent her early life in the Buchanan County area, later moving to Manassas, and had resided in the Elk Garden area since 1975. She was a born again Christian and a member of Assembly of God in the Green Valley section of Lebanon. She was a dedicated and loving mother, with an artistic eye that she used in her paintings, music, and other crafts.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Cecil Griffith, and one daughter, Shelby Jean James.
Survivors: sons, Darrel W. Griffith of Manassas, Gary W. Griffith of Lake Anna, Donnie R. Griffith of Elk Garden; son-in-law, Lee James of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Charles J. Layne of Miami, FL, Donald E. Layne of St. Paul; sister, Marie Pittman of Vansant; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five nieces; and three nephews.
