Johnny E. Mitchem
Johnny E. Mitchem, 55, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 3, 2005 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Bill Mitchem and Flossie Miller Mitchem.
He graduated from Montcalm High School and National Business College. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Church of Christ at Maple View and was a member of the New River Referee Association, Mountain Umpire District. He was involved with youth sports including Little League Baseball, City League Basketball and Girls AAU Basketball teams.
He had a long career in the automobile service industry. After serving in the military, he worked at Action Auto Parts in Bluewell in 1971 and then worked many years at Gibbs Motor Co. as well as other local dealerships. He then worked at A&T Pontiac-Buick in Bluefield, (now T&T) until his career ended.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Survivors: wife, Jacqueline Scott Mitchem; son, Eric Mitchem of College Station, TX; daughter, Kelli Mitchem of Bluefield, VA; sisters, Jean Gaither and Barbara Francis, both of Bluefield, WV, Betty Russell of Richmond, Jacqueline Williamson-Englewood of Port Charlotte, FL; brothers, Clinton Mitchem of Princeton, Milton (Buddy) Mitchem of Owosso, MI, Robert Mitchem and James Mitchem, both of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Tony Reed officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Bluefield Va. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 170, Bluefield, VA 24605 or to the Total Home Care Hospice, 106 Westwood Commons, Bluefield, VA 24605.
Graveside military services were held by the Bluefield, Va. VFW Memorial Post #9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion Post 14.
Mary O’Dell Baugh Olewiler
Mrs. William E. Olewiler (Mary), 67, formerly of Tazewell, died Nov. 7, 2005 at Gloucester Courthouse.
She was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in downtown Bluefield, WV March 11, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Walter C. Baugh, Sr. and of the late Mary O’Dell Baugh of Tazewell.
She attended Tazewell Co. Elem. and High Schools, and was a graduate of the Class of 1956. She attended Tenn. Wesleyan College in Athens, TN and went on to do graduate studies at Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She served the United Methodist Church for 20 years as a Director of Christian Education, working in six different churches, covering three conferences. She was a former active member of Main St. United Methodist Church, Tazewell.
She married
Rev. William E. Olewiler, a United Methodist pastor in the VA Conference.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter C. Baugh, Jr.
Survivors: husband, Rev. William Olewiler, and her brother’s three grown children, Philip A. Baugh, Michael R. Baugh and Sharon O’Dell Baugh.
The funeral was held Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at Main St. United Methodist Church, Tazewell, with the pastor, Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Interment followed at Maplewood cemetery.
For anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, it is suggested that it be given to Main St. United Methodist Church in Tazewell.

Fannie Lee Quinley
Fannie Lee Nickels Quinley, 63, of the Clifton Fork area of Oakwood, died Nov. 11, 2005 at the home of her daughter, Margie Davis, in Oakwood.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late William (Bill) and Margie Ratliff Nickels.
She had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Deliverance Tabernacle Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Paris Quinley, Oct. 17, 1979; two daughters, Darlene and Patricia Quinley; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Elmer and Carl Nickels.
Survivors: daughters, Margie and husband, Eddie Davis, of Oakwood, Norman and husband, Todd Rife, of Pilgrim Knob, Connie and husband, Jessie Bowman, of Mavisdale, Diane and husband, Randy Looney, of Whitewood; step-daughter, Betty and husband, Tommy Nickels, of Grundy; sisters, Jean Varney of Big Rock, Phyllis Jackson of Patterson; brothers, Clyde Nickels of Abingdon, Amos Nickels of Patterson, Tommy Nickels of Grundy; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Deliverance Tabernacle Church in Patterson with Rev. Jerry Matney and Rev. Andrew Blankenship officiating.
Burial followed in the Matney cemetery in Patterson.
Services were held at the church Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.

Gary Lee Rasnake
Gary Lee Rasnake, 55, of Honaker, died Nov. 14, 2005 at his home. Jesus has taken him out of this awful world and out of the long suffering of five years. He is at peace, no more pain, no more sorrow. He now can see the beautiful place he has talked about so long.
Born Dec. 20, 1949 in Russell County, he was a son of Ella Perkins Rasnake of Tazewell and the late Earl Rasnake.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Island Creek Coal Company for 28 years. He was a member of the UMWA and attended Outreach Temple in Wysor Valley.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Gay Rasnake; his godson, Harvey Randall "Ran" Hess; and his father-in-law, Lee Osborne.
Additional survivors: wife of 35 years, Linda (Lynn) Osborne Rasnake; sisters, Joyce Whited of Drill, Phyllis Harrison and husband, Terry, of Paintlick; brothers, Larry Rasnake and wife, Mary Lou, of Swords Creek, Randy Rasnake of Richlands; mother-in-law, Dixie Osborne of Honaker; his goddaughter, Kelly Beth Hess of Blountville, TN; sisters-in-law, Sue Hess and husband, Harvey, and Marie Hess and husband, Carl, all of Honaker; brother-in-law, Agee Osborne of Honaker; nieces, Leigh Tolliver, Kimberly Lynn Rasnake, and Rhonda Gaye Hale; and nephews, Kris Rasnake, Brad Baldwin, M.D., Derrick Rasnake, Ronald Hess, and Jeff Hess.
The funeral will be conducted Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Pastor Larry Robinson officiating.
Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Vicey E. Smith
Vicey Elswick Smith, 81, of Gainesville, formerly of Harman, died Nov. 6, 2005 in the Fauquier County Hospital, Warrenton, following a short illness.
Born at Mouth Card, KY, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Lelage Williams Elswick.
She was a lifelong resident of the Harman area and a member of the Grundy Church of Christ, a member of the adult choir and a member of the Ladies Butterfly Benevolent Group. She was a graduate of Grundy High School and was a former president of Harman Elementary P.T.A. and was a former member of the Homemakers Club. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deaton Smith, April 20, 1983; one daughter, Vivian Hunt, Nov. 25, 1995; and one brother, Ernest Elswick.
Survivors: granddaughter, Laura Lee and husband, Jerry Landrum, of Gainesville; grandson, Lynton Hunt III of Raven; great grandsons, Austin Landrum and Jett Landrum, both of Gainesville; and sister, Nell Shortridge of Gainesville.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and Evg. Mike Rife officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Services were held Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Virgil B. Street
Virgil B. Street, 86, of Honaker, died Nov. 12, 2005 at his home.
Born Mar. 1, 1919 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late James Glen and Florence Blankenship Street.
He had lived in this area for the past 29 years and was a United States Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was a retired welder with Jewell Coal and Coke in Vansant. He was a Master Mason in good standing of Thrall Fredericktown, Ohio, a member of VFW Post 6975 of Bristol, VA, and a member of the Sons of the Confederacy in Grundy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Brown Street; one son, Milliard Wayne Street; one grandson, Eric Miller; five brothers, Paul Street, James Street, Jr., Fred Street, Raymond Street, and Halsey (Doc) Street; and one infant sister, Oakley Street.
Survivors: wife of 49 years, Beatrice Johnson Street; sons and daughters-in-law, Virgil Kermit and Wanda Street of Bristol, VA, James and Ada Street of Castlewood, Dennis and Angie Street of Honaker, Paul and Nita Street of Garden Creek; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Raymond Ratliff and Della and Scottie Miller, all of Honaker; brother, Chester Street of Kernersville, NC; sisters, Belvia Bradberry of High Point, NC, Ruby Matney of Quarryville, PA; grandchildren, Kim Overbay, Julie Gutzman, Robert Ratliff, Matthew Street, Jacob Virgil Street, Travis Hubbard, and Timothy Hubbard; and great-grandson, Little Brandon.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Rowe Free Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
Interment followed at the Street cemetery of Rowe.
Military graveside honors were conducted by American Legion Post 164 of Grundy.

Harold S. Tatum
Harold S. Tatum, 83, of Claypool Hill, died Nov. 12, 2005 at his home following a brief illness.
Born at Wardell, he was the son of the late Lace and Minnie Johnson Tatum.
He was retired from U.S. Steel Gary #14 mine and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War Two and a member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael Wayne Tatum; two brothers, Kyle G. Tatum and James R. Tatum; and three sisters, Margaret Tatum, Gladys Lester and Mozelle Baker.
Survivors: wife of 63 years, Ruth Dunford Tatum; daughter, Anne Keene and husband, Tommy, of Tazewell; son, Lanny Tatum of Tazewell; grandsons, Drennon Laney and wife, Cristy, and Shane Bennett; granddaughter, Leigh-Ann Laney; great grandson, Tyler Wright; two nieces; one nephew; and special friends, Debbie and Heather Peake.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Rick Cole officiating. Masonic memorial rites were conducted by Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260. A committal will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 16 at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
Those attending the committal service may meet at Greenhills Mausoleum at 10:50 a.m. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Veterans Honor Guard Association, Inc.
Anne G. West
Anne G. West, 65, of Morristown, TN, died Nov. 11, 2005 at Lakeway Regional Hospital.
She attended the First Baptist Church of Morristown.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Denver and Nadine Lewis, and one sister, Carol Green.
Survivors: daughter, Cynthia Lish and husband, Kelly; sons, Gregory West and wife, Carmen, Donald West and wife, Chris, Roger West and Valorie; brother, Ricky Lewis and wife, Diane; sister, Judy Asher; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 14 in the Chapel of Mayes Mortuary in Morristown, TN, with the Rev. Danny Georges officiating.
A graveside service was held Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Hamblen Memory Gardens.
Max Willard
Max Willard, 69, of Oakwood, died Nov. 13, 2005.

Dale Edwin Altizer
Dale Edwin Altizer, 56, of Belfast, died Nov. 6, 2005 in James H. Quillen Veterans Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 26, 1949, he was the son of Emory and Lila Altizer of Belfast.
A decorated United States Marine, he proudly served his country in the Vietnam Conflict.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Darrell Altizer; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Altizer and Mr. and Mrs. Gus French.
Additional survivors: wife, Rose Altizer; daughter and son-in-law, Brooke and Tommy Holmes of Bristol; sons, Blake Altizer and Brett Altizer of Kingsland, GA; granddaughter, Natilie Pierantonis; brothers and sisters-in-law, Danny and Abby Altizer of Belfast, Doug and Linda Altizer of Hoover, AL, Phyllis Altizer of Paint Lick; sisters and brother-in-law, Dana and Carson Moats of Richlands, Diane Stevenson of Belfast; several aunts and uncles, cousins and special nieces and nephews; special friend, Samuel (Kilroy) Cheetum; and a host of other friends.
Graveside services will be conducted Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with Rev. Ralph Horton and Rev. Danny Altizer officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Veterans Honor Guard Association, Inc.
Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery mausoleum.
The family received friends Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Belfast Full Gospel Fellowship Church in Belfast.

Iva Heneger Beach
Iva Heneger Beach, 63, of Hopewell, died Nov. 2, 2005 in the John Randolph Medical Center.
She was employed at the John Randolph Medical Center as an LPN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Mabel Heneger; her husband, Leonard Beach; and two sons, Darrin and David Beach.
Survivors: sons, Thomas and Dwayne Beach; daughters, Dorothy “D.D.” Beach and Deborah Bruner; grandchildren, Tina Beach, Claire Levenson, Daniel, Molly and Tessa Beach, Fawn Showalter, Alex Pully, Rachel Woods and Arynn Beach; and brother, James Heneger.
The family received friends Nov. 7 from 7-9 p.m. at the Nelsen Funeral Home – Gould Chapel.
