Nannie Naomi Jackson

Nannie Naomi Jackson, 93, of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 27, 2005 in a Glen Burnie, MD health care facility.

Born Dec. 23, 1911 in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Bertha Mosley.

She was a member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church. She was the manager of the 5 & Dime Store.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rooker Hawkins; her second husband, Andrew (Frank) Jackson; two sons, Paul Hawkins and Thomas Walter Hawkins; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: grandchildren, Tom Hawkins and Bruce Hawkins, both of Glen Burnie, J.J. Johnson of Baltimore, MD, David Hawkins of North Carolina; six great grandchildren; and one niece, Ann McFall of Richlands.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jackie Strickler officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

English Joyce

English Joyce, 87, of Richlands, died Nov. 28, 2005 at his home following a long illness.

Born at Jewell Ridge, he was the son of the late Clifton and Mae Collins Joyce.

He was of the Apostolic faith. He was a Master Mason of Richlands Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M. He was a retired coal miner formerly employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Corp and Clinchfield Coal and was a member of the U.M.W.A.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Joyce and Jack Joyce; one granddaughter, Angela Nuckles; and one son-in-law, Lawrence Wyatt.

Survivors: wife of 71 years, Thelma Shortridge Joyce; daughters, Shirley Wyatt of Groveport, OH, Rosemary Nuckles and husband, Harry, of Minooka, IL; son, Gene Allen Joyce and wife, Patricia, of Richlands; sisters, Ella Helbert of Lynchburg, Faye Durham of Ft. Pierce, FL, Mary Ann Powers of Mt. Carmel, TN; ten grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Denton officiating.

Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Masonic Memorial Rites were conducted by Richlands Lodge #318 A.F. & A.M. Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richlands Area Ministerial Association Christmas Tree Fund, PO Box 173, Richlands, VA 24641.

Frances Hall Kucheman

Frances Hall Kucheman, 86, died Dec. 1, 2005 in Tallahassee, FL.

She was born Nov. 15, 1919, in Lynch, KY, to Truby and Kate Hall.

She spent most of her early years in Virginia and graduated from National Business College in Roanoke, where she worked for an accounting firm and later for IBM in Richmond.

She was married for 40 years to Major General Henry B. Kucheman, the former commander of Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, FL, from 1972-1975. After retirement, Frances and General Kucheman lived in Shalimar, FL until General Kucheman’s death in 1987.

A life long Presbyterian, she was active in the life of her church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lt. Willard Kiser, who was killed in World War II.

Survivors: sons, William Henry and wife, Teri, of Sudbury, MA, James Quensen, and wife, Glenys, of Gorham, ME, David Brian and wife, Cindy, of Tallahassee, FL; brother-in-law, Allen C. Young of Chattanooga, TN; niece, Ann Igou of Richmond; and five grandchildren.

The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Walton Beach, FL, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.

Burial followed at Barrancas National cemetery in Pensacola, FL.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 134 SW Beal Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548.

McLaughlin Mortuary in Fort Walton Beach, FL, was in charge of arrangements.

Lillie Mae Kuntz

Lillie Mae Kuntz, 75, of Chapel Hill, NC, formerly of Buchanan County, died Dec. 1, 2005, in a Pittsboro, NC nursing home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William Sheridan Allen and Mary Elizabeth Boyd Rose, both Buchanan County natives.

She had made her home in the Buchanan County area most of her life and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vernon Kuntz; two sisters, Bernice Cantrell and Tilda Lowe; and one brother, Alvris Rose.

Survivors: son, Earl Brown and wife, Teresa, of Chapel Hill; brother, Sherman Rose of Tazewell; grandchildren, Steven Brown, Angela Benoit, and Sabrina Brown; and great grandchildren, Chase Earl Brown and Alexis Benoit.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.

Interment followed at the Boyd Mountain cemetery near Shortts Gap.

William (Lee) Patrick

William (Lee) Patrick, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died Dec. 1, 2005.

Born Jan. 4, 1926 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Jack and Nancy Brown Patrick.

He was a school bus driver for the Tazewell County School Board.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille White Patrick; one son, Kevin Patrick; and seven brothers, James Patrick, Eugene Patrick, Cecil Patrick, Roy Patrick, Joe Patrick, Davis Patrick and Isaac Patrick.

Survivors: sons, Bill Patrick of North Carolina, Brian Keith Patrick and wife, Diane, of Cedar Bluff; daughters, Evelyn Ann Cave and husband, Cletus, of Harrisonburg, Kathy Dunford and husband, Gary, of Lebanon; grandchildren, Jamie Patrick, Jason Patrick, Zachary Patrick, Sandra Gentry, Missy Harpine, Ashley Dunford, William Dunford and Mickey Lester; great grandchildren, Cindy Gentry, Jessie Gentry, Erin Gentry, Emily Grace Harpine and Zachary Allen Harpine; and special friend, Mildred Rhodes.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Garland Smith

Garland Smith, 60, of Tazewell, died Dec. 2, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born May 8, 1945 in Tazewell, he was a son of the late Charlie Harman Smith and Augusta Rose Smith.

He retired from the Town of Tazewell Maintenance Department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Joe Smith and Billy Ray Smith.

Survivors: sisters, Barbara Martin and husband, Tom, of Claypool Hill, Jean Smith of Cedar Bluff, Linda Johnson and husband, Cecil, Wanda Stevens, and Patsy Pickett, all of Tazewell; brothers, Charlie Lee Smith and wife, Nellie, of Thompson Valley, Dennis Wayne Smith of North Tazewell; special nephew, Clifton Pickett of the home; and several other nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Tim Stone officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Daisy B. Wheeler

Daisy B. Wheeler, 85, of Tazewell County, died Dec. 2, 2005 in a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Saltville, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Millie Asbury Barrett, both Smyth County natives.

She had made her home in the Tazewell County area most of her life and was of the Protestant Faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Wheeler; one daughter, Emmileen Vannoy; one son, John H. Wheeler; one granddaughter, Deborah Davis; one grandson, Keith Cochran; one great grandson, Robert Davis; three sisters, Leona, Grace, and Patsy; and five brothers, Sherman, James, Robert, Everett, and Billy Joe.

Survivors: daughters, Patsy Shields of North Carolina, Peggy Thompson and husband, Frank, of West Virginia, Pamela Mullins and Penny Long, both of Florida; sons, Andrew (Jack) Wheeler and wife, Donna, of Pounding Mill, Thomas E. Wheeler and wife, Barbara, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Cora Wilson and husband, Earnie, of Burkes Garden, Ruth Stonestreet of Maryland; 24 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and special friends, Staff of the Heritage Hall Nursing Home and Tazewell Community Hospital.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Leonard Meadows officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Tom P. Beavers

Tom P. Beavers, 74, of the Dry Fork area of North Tazewell, died Nov. 27, 2005 at his home.

Born Dec. 9, 1930 at Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Dewey John Beavers and Hanna Mae Williams Beavers.

He was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a retired section foreman with Norfolk and Western Railroad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Glass, and two brothers, Orville Beavers and Blaine Beavers.

Survivors: wife of 52 years, Freda Bradley Beavers; sons, Michael Beavers and wife, Loretta, of Grapefield, Jerry Beavers and wife, Marie, of the Healing Springs area of North Tazewell; sisters, Sadie Testerman of Bel Air, MD, Helen Hiltner and husband, William, of Fredericksburg, Pat Kornto and husband, Frank, of Eden, NC, Judy Roberts and husband, Tom, of Bluefield, WV; six grandsons; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be conducted Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Johnny Elmore and Larry Brown officiating.

Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Fern Lynn Harrison

Fern Lynn Harrison, 32, of Tazewell, died Nov. 27, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell.

Ruth Kathaleen Hess

Ruth Kathaleen Stevens Hess, 87, of Claypool Hill, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 27, 2005 following a long illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Otis and Pearl Jackson Stevens.

She was a member of Richlands Tabernacle.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Jay Hess, four brothers and one sister.

Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Don (Betty) Horton of Richlands; sons, John S. Hess, Jr. and wife, Celina, of Fairfield, CA, Billy J. Hess and wife, Reba, of Richlands, Allen B. Hess and wife, Betty, of Doran; sisters, Peggy Lane of Denver, CO, Betty Jackson of Nashville, TN; brother, Otis Stevens of Cleveland, OH; half sister, Nancy Walker of Wilkesboro, NC; special niece, Francis Stevens Coleman; five grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Ralph Horton and Rev. Leon O’Quinn officiating.

Burial was private at the Hankins cemetery in Richlands.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Richlands Tabernacle, 2506 4th Street, Richlands, VA 24641.

Georgia Mounts Horn

Georgia Mounts Horn, 87, of Bastian, formerly of Buchanan County, died Nov. 23, 2005 in a Bland County nursing home following a long illness.

Born in Buchanan County June 17, 1918, she was the daughter of the late George and Delilah Hunt Mounts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Millard C. Horn; one daughter, Mable Viola Horn; four brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors: son, Ed Horn and wife, Brenda, of Danville; grandsons, Seth Horn and Bo Horn, both of Danville; brother, Alex Mounts of Grundy; sister, Okie Hurley of Grundy; sister-in-law, Phyllis Horn of Bluefield, VA; her niece and guardian, Kay Horn, of Jewell Ridge; a very special friend, Mary Boyd and family of Richlands; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Clinch Valley Memorial Gardens cemetery at Richlands.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are asked to be sent to the family in care of Singleton Funeral Service, P.O. Box 201 Cedar Bluff, VA 24609.

Lawrence R. Houchins

Lawrence Raymond Houchins, 70, of Tazewell, died Nov. 23, 2005 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.

Born Sept. 16, 1935 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late George and Sarah Jones Houchins.

Survivors: sisters, Helen Harrison and husband, Bert, of Richlands, Mae Crawford and husband, Donald, and Zola Thompson and husband, Charlie, all of North Tazewell.

Graveside services were conducted Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. at Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with the Rev. Gerald K. Stacy officiating.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home of Tazewell was in charge of the arrangements.
