Arthur “Art” Barnett
Arthur “Art” Barnett, 72, of Bristol, VA, died June 16, 2005 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.
Born June 28, 1932 in Powderly, KY, he was a son of the late Goad and Janie May Daniels Barnett.
He had lived in the Bristol area since 1977 and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors: wife of 42 years, Naomi Ann Honaker Barnett; daughter, Candace Lynn Akerson of Montgomery, AL; son, Jeffrey M. Barnett of Bristol, VA; and grandchildren, Travis Akerson of Alexandria and Jacob Barnett of Roan Mountain, TN.
The funeral was conducted June 18 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.
Interment followed in Mountain View cemetery in Bristol, VA.
Anita V. Billiter
Anita Vandyke Billiter, 47, of Wytheville, died June 18, 2005 at her home with her family by her side after a courageous fight with cancer.
Born April 13, 1958, she was the daughter of Jimmy and Beulah Horn Vandyke of Contrary.
She was a 1976 graduate of Garden High School and a 1984 graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College with a degree in accounting. Anita and her husband Mike traveled cross country and were owners and operators of Billiter Trucking. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Rural Retreat.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Josh and Edna Vandyke and George W. and Pearl Horn.
Additional survivors: husband of 19 years, Mike Billiter; sister, Patsy Mitchell of Contrary; brother, Alan Vandyke and wife, Melinda, of Contrary; mother-in-law, Geneva Matney Billiter of Richlands; special nephew and niece, Alex Vandyke and Samantha Vandyke of Contrary; and many devoted friends and relatives.
The funeral was conducted June 21 at 11 a.m. at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Pastor Billy Johnson and Pastor Mike Trent officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Billie Gordon Greer
Billie Gordon Greer, 83, of Lebanon, passed from this life June 15, 2005 at his residence with his family surrounded by a band of angels.
He was the son of the late Marcus McKinley Greer and Bertha Sowards Greer, born August 3, 1921 in Myra, KY, in Pike County and was of the Christian Faith. He was a retired coal miner and operator, having been working in the coal industry for 46 years. He enjoyed working in the garden and watching it grow and produce. He was often asked when would be the best time to start a garden and when to put out crops. He always planted using the signs on the calendar. He was a very caring and wise man.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Louise Wright, Bonnie Jean Hale, Mildred Jean Johnson, Orchid Gayle Collins; one brother, Guy Jerome Greer; and one grandson, Jake Bledsoe.
He leaves behind his precious wife and companion, Margaret; daughters, Loretta (Bill) Bledsoe of Norton, Billie (Thomas) Miller of Smyrna, TN, Bonnie (Howard) Finney of Lebanon, Brenda (Frank) McClanahan of Elk Garden; sons, Robert Earl (Linda) Greer of Grundy, Roger Allen of Frenchburg, KY; sisters, Audrey (Jesse) Johnson of Gladwin, MI, Hazel June Newsome of Frankfort, KY; brothers, Charles Hubert Greer of Dayton, OH, Marcus McKinley (Jayne) Greer, Jr., of Ypsilanti, MI, Joseph Morris (Irene) Greer of Shelbyville, TN; and Glenn Allen (Sue) Greer of Bellville, MI; granddaughters, Bridgett Shortridge of Lebanon, Melissa McClanahan Phillips of St. Paul, Karen (Greg) Allen of Ringgold, GA, Allison McClanahan and Traci McClanahan, both of Elk Garden; grandsons, Robert Todd (Leda) Greer of Louisville, KY; Steven Miller of Smyrna, Eric Allen of Frenchburg; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Braden, Dalton, and Hayden; special loved ones, Lois and Sara Stacy, and a special caregiver, Annette Hughes.
The funeral was conducted June 18 at 11 a.m. at Lebanon Baptist Church in Lebanon with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.
Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Pearl M. Hubbard
Pearl Miller Hubbard, 88, of Honaker, died June 16, 2005 at the residence of her daughter in Old Fort, NC.
Born Oct. 11, 1916 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Shade and Maudie Powers Miller.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the East Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hubbard, in 1984, three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors: daughters, Phyllis and Wayne Robinson and Peggy Lovett, all of Old Fort; grandchildren, Theresa Strickland, Bonnie Hudgins and Robbie Robinson, all of Old Fort, Misty Ivy and Jeremy Glover, both of Texas; brothers, Easley Miller, Earl Miller, Cecil Miller, Beecher Miller, George Miller and Hassel Miller; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 19 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Claude Rose officiating.
Interment followed in the Russell Memorial cemetery in Lebanon.
Marie R. Keen
Marie Ritter Matney Keen, 79, of the Dismal section of Buchanan County, died June 19, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Nearvie Compton Matney.
She was a member of Hale Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church and Whitewood House of Worship.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Ritter Keen; one daughter, Diane Keen; one son-in-law, Garry Donal Rife; four brothers, Lindburgh Matney, Jimmy Matney, Theodore (Speck) Matney and Elmer Matney; and one sister, Hazel Matney.
Survivors: daughter, Sylvia Compton and husband, Clyde, of Oakwood; granddaughter, Dawn Lesa Wagner and husband, Rodney, of Salem; twin grandsons, Garry Ronald Rife and wife, Carla, of Oakwood, Barry Donald Rife and wife, Ruth Ann, of Whitewood; great grandchildren, Rachel and Nathan Rife of Whitewood, Katrina Wagner of Salem, Alex Rife of Oakwood; step granddaughter, Angelia White and husband, Jeff, of Jewell Ridge; step great grandsons, Mac and Jake White of Jewell Ridge; brothers, Arlin (Dennis) Matney and wife, Goldie, of Cedar Bluff, Basil Matney and wife, Marie, of Richlands, and Otis Matney and wife, June, of Fredericksburg; sisters-in-law, Margaret Matney and Nellie Endicott, both of Cedar Bluff, Agnes Keen of Grundy; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The funeral will be conducted June 23 at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Jimmy Cole and Rev. Danny Houchins officiating.
Burial will follow in the Matney cemetery at Hale Creek.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 9 p.m. June 21 and 22 with a song service at 7 p.m. both evenings at the funeral home.
Palmer “Pete” Martin
Palmer D. “Pete” Martin, 52, of Honaker, died June 19, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Nov. 18, 1952, he was a son of the late James H. and Genevie Dotson Martin.
He had spent most of his life in the Russell County area and was the owner/operator of Martin Trucking in Honaker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Retha “Jody” Gumpert; one brother, Larry “Simp” Martin; and one infant sister.
Survivors: wife of 29 years, Janet Martin; daughter, Cathy Martin of the home; son, Andrew Martin, of the home; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted June 22 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stephen Musick and Rev. Chris Musick officiating.
Interment will follow in the Family cemetery near the home.
Larry E. Osborne
Larry Eugene Osborne, 54, of Baptist Valley, died June 17, 2005 at a Johnson City, TN, Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Charles William and Trula Reedy Osborne, both Tazewell County natives.
He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was a retired coal miner for the Dickenson Russell Coal Company. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a lifetime member of the NRA. He was also a member of the Zion Tabernacle Church in the Middle Creek section of Cedar Bluff.
Survivors: wife, Judy Paulette Compton Osborne; daughter, Tania Eugenia Perry of Claypool Hill; sons, Jeffery Allen Osborne of Richlands; special son, Ethan Blake Osborne of Richlands; sister, Sandra Carol Bickford of Tennessee; brothers, Michael Allen Osborne and wife, Margaret, and Roger William Osborne and wife, Roberta, all of Richlands; and grandchildren, Joshua Garland Eugene Osborne, John Joseph Eugene Perry and Cody Allen Osborne.
The funeral was conducted June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Tabernacle Church in Cedar Bluff with the Rev. Walter Franklin, Rev. Eddie Tucker, and Brother Emory Ball officiating.
Interment followed at the Newberry cemetery on Horton Ridge near Raven.

Dallas Perkins
Dallas Perkins, 66, of the Pine Creek section of Swords Creek, died suddenly June 14, 2005 in a Bristol, TN, hospital.
Born March 28, 1939 in Swords Creek, he was a son of the late Carlos J. and Ellen Perkins.
He had spent most of his life in the Swords Creek area and had served in the United States Army and the Army National Guard. A retired and disabled coal miner, he had been employed by Island Creek Coal Company and VP #3 and was a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Carlos Wayne Perkins.
Survivors: wife of 46 years, Charlotte Perkins; daughters, Pamela Perkins Baldwin and husband, Ricky, of Abingdon, Trina Perkins Hill of Cedar Bluff; favorite son, Rev. Scotty Perkins and wife, Kathy, of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Kala Perkins and Keisha Perkins, both of Swords Creek, Adam Baldwin of Abingdon; sisters, Frances Adkins of Cedar Bluff, Wanda Greear of Hansonville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 17 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker with Rev. Fairley Spencer and Rev. Jess Whited officiating.
Interment followed in the Perkins cemetery at Drill.
Military graveside honors were conducted by DAV Chapter 31 American Veteran’s Honor Guard Association.
Harry H. Sizemore
Harry Hopkins Sizemore, 89, of Bandy, died June 10, 2005 at a Tazewell Community Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Hiram Hopkins and Vicie Ellen Mitchem Sizemore, both McDowell County natives.
He had made his home in the Bandy area for the past 27 years and had also lived in Arlington and McDowell County, WV. He was a retired butcher, a staunch Democrat, and a nice gentleman that will be sorely missed by all. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and member of the Masonic Lodge. He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.
Survivors: wife, Amelia Rasnake Sizemore; daughters, Judi Fuller of Reading, PA, Kathy Matney of Marion; son, Ronnie Sizemore of Casper, WY; step daughters, Shelia Keen of Bandy, Joanne Dalton of Tolbart, TN; step son, Eddie Rasnake of Louisville, KY; brothers, Malan Sizemore of Shreveport, LA, Brown Sizemore of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Per his request, his body was donated to science.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Anna Lee Smith
Anna Lee Allison Armes Smith, 82, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died June 16, 2005 in a Salisbury, NC, nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Homer and Ruth Lowe Allison, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a graduate of Richlands High School and was a Retired School Teacher with the Tazewell County School System having taught in Bandy for several years. She was a former employee of Zip-In at Cedar Bluff. She was a member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church. She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff area most of her life. She had resided in Salisbury for the last three years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Armes; her second husband, Ted Smith; one sister, Doris Allison; and three brothers, Curtis, Harman and Robert S. Allison.
Survivors: step-son, Roscoe Smith and wife, Velma, of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted June 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill with the Rev. Jack Jenkins officiating.
Interment followed.

Frances C. Teague
Frances Cecil Teague, 84, of N. Hawthorne Road, died June 15, 2005 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born in Tazewell Co. April 15, 1921, to the late Samuel Wesley Cecil and Vernon Dreyan Hawkins.
She graduated from Tazewell High School and attended Mary Washington College. She retired from Salem College as Secretary to the Dean of the School of Music.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Stockton Teague; one sister, Margaret Cecil Jones of Tazewell; one brother, Robert Hawkins Cecil of Apopka, FL.
Survivors: daughter, Mary Bouldin Hugenschmidt and husband, James, of Asheville, NC; son, Samuel Cecil Bouldin of Panama City, FL; stepdaughters, Dorothy Glenn Teague of Waterloo, IA, Ann Teague Jilek of Severna Park, MD: grandchildren, Dena Lynn Hurst of Tallahassee, FL, Christina Hugenschmidt and husband, Brad Rucker, of Winston-Salem, Samuel Paul Bouldin of Panama City, Matthew Hugenschmidt of Raleigh, NC; great granddaughters, Sarah Hurst and Annabell Bouldin; sister, Jean Cecil Palmer of Belvoir; brother, Jack Witten Cecil and wife, JoAnn Cecil of Lake Wales, FL; and brother-in-law, J.
