Nora B. Boardwine
Nora Bailey Boardwine, 88, formerly of Belhaven, and more recently a resident of Cross Creek Health Care Center, died July 15, 2005 at Cross Creek.
Born in Tazewell Co., Feb. 28, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Mary Lambert Bailey.
She was first married
to the late Robert Anderson, later to the late Dewey Boardwine and following his death married
his brother, Robert Boardwine, Sr., who also preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Ethel Green; three brothers, Ed Bailey, Robert Bailey and Henry Bailey; and one sister, Mae Wheeler.
Survivors: son, Robert Anderson of Danville, WV; daughter, Brenda Spring of Gray Court, SC; stepson, Robert Boardwine, Jr. of Ponzer Community; grandson, Bobby E. Green of Ponzer; granddaughter, Elrie G. McLawhorn of Pantego, who she reared in her home; sisters, Sarah Parker of Lynchburg, Lela Corder of Tazewell; eight additional grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 2 p.m. at the graveside in Mt. Olive Church of Christ cemetery in Ponzer with Steve Bryan officiating.

Teresa Ann Ball Boyd
Teresa Ann Ball Boyd, 44, died July 7, 2005 in South Carolina following a brief illness.
She was a daughter of Pete Crockett of Ohio and the late Jody Horn.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Nora and Stewart “Red” Ward; and paternal grandparents, John and Grace Crockett.
Additional survivors: son, Gregory Ball and wife, Crystal, of South Carolina; sisters, Mary Keene of Richlands, Melissa Keen of Wytheville; and a host of loved ones and friends.
A memorial service was conducted July 12 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Webb and Rev. Joe Horn officiating.
Margaret Marie Burton
Margaret Marie Burton, 75,of Bluefield, VA, died July 5, 2005 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Bluefield, VA, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Landreth and Emma Bourne Landreth.
She was an active member of the Graham Christian Church in Bluefield, VA, where she was also a member of the CWF and years ago was formerly employed by Bluefield Supply Co.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Burton; and one brother, Clarence Landreth.
Survivors: sons, Jimmy Burton and wife, Laura, of Blacksburg, Jeff Burton and wife, Melissa, of Abingdon; grandchildren, Laura Leigh Burton of Manhattan, NY, Caitlin and Christian Burton of Blacksburg; brother, Leon Landreth of Bluefield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral was conducted July 8 at 2 p.m. at the Graham Christian Church with Ministers Robert C. Johnson and Gary Lyons officiating.
Burial followed in the Maple Hill cemetery.

Dr. Daniel DeFerie
Dr. Daniel Dwight DeFerie, 46, of the Lake James community, Nebo, died unexpectedly June 26, 2005 in Sanford.
He was born Feb. 19, 1959 in Philadelphia to Dr. David A. DeFerie and Emma B. DeFerie, who both preceded him in death.
He spent most of his youth in Harwich, MA, on Cape Cod. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Holy Cross University in Worchester, MA, where he was named the Fenwick Scholar for academic excellence. After graduating from Holy Cross, he graduated from Medical School at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, and completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
At the time of his death, he was self-employed as a contract anesthesiologist at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, NC. He was previously employed on staff at McDowell Hospital in Marion, NC, and at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
Survivors: mother, Dorothy T. DeFerie of Sunset Beach, NC; wife, Elaine Hatcher DeFerie, of Nebo; brother, David A. DeFerie, Jr. and wife, Suzanne, of Asheville, NC; and sisters, Donna Anderson of Vernon, CT, and Stephanie DeFerie of Orleans, MA.
A funeral mass was held July 1 at 2 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Asheville.
Interment was held at McDowell Memorial Park in Marion, NC.

Teiney Duty
Teiney Duty, 92, of Tazewell, formerly of Buchanan County, died July 14, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.
Born Oct. 6, 1912 in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Jerry Mire Blankenship and Caldonia Hess Blankenship.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Duty, and three sons-in-law, Junior Sanders, Duane O’Quinn and Carl Sanders.
Survivors: daughters, Agnes O’Quinn of Akron, OH, Opal Sanders of Tazewell, Juanita Sanders of Rowe; sister, Lottie Campbell of Swords Creek; four grandsons; three granddaughters; seven great grandsons; and three great granddaughters.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 18 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastors Ancil Childress, William Keene, and Leroy Long officiating.
Burial followed at the Blankenship cemetery at Page.
A service was held July 17 at the funeral home at 7 p.m.
Bernice Faye Elswick
Bernice Faye Elswick, 67, of the Smith Ridge section of Jewell Ridge, died July 12, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Margie Davis Ward, both Buchanan County natives.
She was a homemaker and had lived most of her life in the Jewell Ridge area. She was a member of the Smith Ridge Pentecostal Church near Jewell Ridge.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Brittain Elswick, and one brother, Carmode Ward.
Survivors: daughter, Edna Sue Elswick of the home; sisters, Jean Asbury and husband, Ed, of Ypsilanti, MI, Delma Kidd and husband, Donald, of Crossville, AL, Betty Augustin and husband, Mitch, of Crystal Lake, IL, Mildred Sims of Lake in the Hills, IL; brothers, Warren G. Ward and wife, Leona, of Paynesville, WV, Joe Ward and wife, Jean, of Harrison, MI; and special caregivers of Total Home Care Hospice of Richlands.
The funeral was conducted July 15 at 2 p.m. at the Smith Ridge Pentecostal Church near Jewell Ridge with the Rev. Joe Horne and Rev. Randy Webb officiating.
Interment followed in the Elswick Family cemetery on Smith Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Donald Ray Farmer
Donald Ray Farmer, 51, of Bluefield, died July 11, 2005 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
Born in Bluefield, he was a son of the late Henry Page Farmer and Carrie Elizabeth Akers Farmer.
He was an employee of Fincastle Country Club and a former employee for Consol Coal Co. at Jenkin Jones. He attended church at the Bluefield Cumberland Road Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Everett Farmer, Jr. and Carl Alex Farmer and a foster brother, Junior Neal.
Survivors: wife, Patricia Ann Massie Farmer; daughters, Tina Marie Farmer and Tonya Lynn Farmer, both of the home; granddaughter, Whitney Farmer; and brothers, Douglas Mark Farmer and wife, Marsha Ray, of Springville, Michael S. Farmer and wife, Vickie, of Bluefield, WV, Henry Wayne Farmer and wife, Tammy Lynn, of Colonial Beach.
The funeral was conducted July 15 at 11 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with Pastor Danny Scott officiating.
Burial followed in the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA.
Earl Buford Fuller
Earl Buford Fuller, 80, of Elon, NC, died July 15, 2005 at the Hospice Home in Burlington.
A native of Richlands, he was the son of the late John Buford and Virginia Agnes Keen Fuller, and husband of the late Gleena Ashbrook Fuller and Anne Shockley Fuller.
He was a retired truck driver, driving for Associated Transport and other trucking companies, attended Peoples Memorial Christian Church, a 32 degree Mason, a member of Bula Lodge #409 AF&AM and a WWII Army veteran, receiving the Combat Infantry Medal, Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and son, John Buford “J.B.” Fuller.
Survivors: grandsons, John Buford Fuller, II and wife, Robin, of the home, Bryant Fuller and wife, Carla, of Boston, MA; step daughter, Linda Sue Harris and husband, Clea, of Richlands; brothers, Dale Fuller and wife, Joan, and Kyle “Red” Fuller and wife, Movida; two step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; one step great great grandchild; four nieces; and two nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 4 p.m. from the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Shields.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. July 18 at Greenhills Memorial Gardens in Richlands.
Debbie Ann Garrett
Debbie Ann Garrett, 35, of Raven, died July 9, 2005.
Born in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of Ronnie and Bonnie Lester of Raven.
She was employed by Bristol Compressors.
Additional survivors: husband, Chris Garrett of Lebanon; daughter, Samantha Elizabeth Garrett of the home; sisters, Alice Marie Walton and Bonnie Lee Lawson, both of Raven; grandmother, Draxie Gaynell Elswick of Raven; mother-in-law, Betty Blankenship of Lebanon; father-in-law, Richard Garrett of Lebanon; several nieces, nephews, cousins and all her special friends from Bristol Compressors.
The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. July 14 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Frank Lester officiating.
Burial followed in the Newberry cemetery at Horton Ridge.
Bertie P. Goodman
Bertie Plaster Goodman, 92, of Swords Creek, died July 13, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a short illness.
Born Feb. 28, 1913 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late King and Lula Ray Plaster, both Russell County natives. She had spent most of her life in the Swords Creek area and was a member of the Swords Creek Block Church since 1961. She retired from Russell County School System, having worked at Swords Creek Elementary School for over 20 years. She was also a member of the Swords Creek Community Baptist Church Senior Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Goodman; one son, David Goodman; three sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors: daughter and special son-in-law, Judy and Jerry Clark of Swords Creek; son and special daughter-in-law, Larry “Zeke” and Barbara Goodman of Honaker; grandchildren, Chris Clark of Richmond, Crystal Goodman Stinson and husband, Greg, of Knoxville, TN; great-grandson, Skyler Clark of Richmond; sisters, Justine Ball of Royal Oak, MI, Corine and Bernard White of Wadsworth, OH; brother, Dee and JoAnn Plaster of Mansfield, OH; special friends, Ida Richardson and Ruby Mullins; special niece, Janet Perkins; and many additional special friends, nieces, and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. July 16 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Carl Robinson and Rev. Dwight Miller officiating.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Narcie Ann Keen
Narcie Ann Keen, 72, of Swords Creek, died July 12, 2005 in an Abingdon hospital.
Born Mar. 13, 1933 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Myrtie Gilbert Keen.
A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area, she was a member of the Swords Creek Block Church.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jerry Blevins of Hartwell, GA; brothers, George Keen and Bruce Keen and wife, Peggy, all of Abingdon, Tom Keen and wife, Betty, of Phoenix, AZ; grandson, Jerry Blevins, Jr. of Dearing, GA; one niece; and six nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 14 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
