Marvin “Race Horse” Helton, Sr.
Marvin Eugene “Race Horse” Helton, Sr., 76, of Piqua, OH, died July 31, 2005 in his residence following a brave battle with cancer for three months.
Born in Saltville May 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Arthur D. and Maggie H. (Hess) Helton, Sr. He married
Hilda Meyers, who preceded him in death. He then married
Virginia A. Shefbuch Sept. 29, 1962 in Greenville, she survives.
He was a concrete finisher and brick mason for over 60 years including 30 years with the Lavy Concrete Company. He was a member of the Piqua United Pentecostal Church and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Della Mae Jones.
Additional survivors: sons, Marvin E. Helton, Jr. of Augusta, GA, Daniel and Margene Jay of Piqua; five grandchildren; one great grandson; sisters, Eula Perkins, and Ruth and Carl Patton, all of Piqua; and brother, Major Arthur Dale Helton, Jr. of Augusta.
The funeral will be conducted Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Jamieson and Yannucci Funeral Home in Piqua with Rev. Gary Wagner officiating.
Burial will follow in Forest Hill cemetery, where full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad.

Anita Louise Hill
Anita Louise Hill, 63, of Tazewell, died July 30, 2005 at a Duffield nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Johnse and Cora Barnett Wright.
She was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area and was an adored babysitter for many, many children who loved her dearly. She was of the Assembly of God faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Survivors: loving husband of 42 years, George Thomas Hill; son, David Wayne Hill of Swords Creek; sisters, Mildred Cornwell, Lucy Wright, and Dorothy Combs and husband, David, all of Bandy, Betty Cole of Lebanon; and brothers, Ernie Wright and wife, Jane, of Bandy, and Joe Wright of Piqua, OH.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Interment followed in the Whittaker Ridge cemetery on Whittaker Ridge near Bandy.
Danny Jackson
George Daniel (Danny) Jackson, 57, of Glade Spring, went to be with the Lord July 26, 2005.
He was born Mar. 14, 1948 and was a lifelong resident of Washington County.
He was an employee of Sterling Casket Hardware Company for 22 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Edward Jackson and Mary Katherine Carr Jackson.
Survivors: caring companion and caregiver, Pat Sherfey; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Jane and Jeff Allen of Indianola, WA, Phyllis and Roger Brown of Richlands; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray E. Jackson, Jr. of Abingdon, Curtis and Susan Jackson of Bristol, VA, Garry and Barbara Jackson of Mitchell County, Jerry and Cynthia Jackson of Rome, GA, David and Lisa Jackson of Damascus; special friends, Melina Ann Greer and Curtis Dewayne Sherfey; his beloved pets, Tippy Toes, Baby Chantile Lace, Shaunta Danielle and Selena; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Bill Reece and Pastor Bob Neace officiating.
Interment followed in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Harry Lee Patton
Harry Lee Patton died July 9, 2005 in an Orlando, FL hospital.
Born in Cedar Bluff, he was the son of the late Herman and Leola Patton.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Lake Harmon Patton, one child, and three brothers, Herman, Jr., Eugene and Clarence.
He is survived by six children.
Private graveside services will be held in Richlands at a future date.

Minnie Stump Peck
Minnie Stump Peck, 92, of Honaker, died July 27, 2005 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1912 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Mike and Ida Belle Lee Stump.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Valley View Church for over 60 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Peck; two sons, Hassell Peck and Charlie Peck; two daughters, Stella Peck and Margaret Clark; two brothers; and six sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughters, Rosie Peck of Honaker, Helen Taylor and husband, Jim, of Oak Hill, WV, Betty Restrepo and husband, Miguel, of Panama; son, Arnold Peck and wife, Annabelle, of Honaker; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 29 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Eugene Miller officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Thurman E. Phillips
Thurman Eugene Phillips, 70, of Swords Creek, died July 31, 2005 at a Richlands hospital.
Born in Wise County, he was a son of the late Ruel and Estelle Miller Phillips, both Swords Creek natives.
He had made his home in the Swords Creek area most of his life, was a retired miner with Pittston Coal Company, a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union #1570, and proudly served his country with the U. S. Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Glenna Ellen Phillips, and one sister, Norma Faye Phillips.
Survivors: wife, Phyllis Robinette Phillips; sons, Benny Lee Phillips and wife, Patty, of Swords Creek, Jeffrey Lynn Phillips and wife, Pamela, of Lebanon; sisters, Gay Perkins and Donna Hess, both of Honaker, Charlotte Perkins of Swords Creek, Dana Christian of Lebanon; brother, Edgar Phillips of Bristol, TN; grandchildren, Joey Phillips of Rosedale, Rebecca Goody of Pounding Mill, Brandon Phillips of Lebanon; and four great grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Gerald Lester and Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Interment will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Elbert W. Rose
Elbert William Rose, 71, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, departed this life Aug. 1, 2005.
Born Mar. 16, 1934 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Melvin Carter and Nancy Delanie Harris Rose.
A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. He was employed by Clinchfield Coal Company for 19 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Marie Ball Rose; one son, William Harold Rose, Sr.; and one brother, Homar Neil Rose.

John Fulton Russell
John Fulton Russell, 65, of Eustis, FL, died July 15, 2005 at his home.
Born in Cedar Bluff, he was a son of the late Emory C. Russell and Panzy N. Stamper Russell.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. After moving to Florida in the 1970s, he worked as an independent truck driver. He was a generous, kind and considerate person who dearly loved his family. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel.
Survivors: one step-daughter; two step-sons; sister, Elizabeth Stacey and husband, Richard, of Bristol, TN; brothers, Emory C. Russell, Jr. and wife, Irene, of Launion, Phillipines, Rev. Charles R. Russell and wife, Lovine, of Burksville; former sister-in-law, Joyce Russell, of Fairfield, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted July 29 at 2 p.m. at Villa Village in Eustis, FL.

Madison Grace Stapleton, 17 days old, died July 31, 2005 in a Johnson City, TN, hospital.
Born July 14, 2005 she was the daughter of Brian and Kristen Lynette Shortt Stapleton of Cedar Bluff.

Alfred Burns White
Alfred Burns White, 77, of Doran, formerly of Castlewood, died July 22, 2005.
Born Jan. 15, 1928, in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Charlie Thomas and Gracie Mae Hughes White.
He retired from the Clinch Valley Rock Quarry in Castlewood in 1980 and was a member of the Gospel Center in Belfast.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Reynolds, Tommy and Clyde White, and three sisters, Helen Honaker, Nannie White and Cleo Lampkins.
Survivors: wife, Nancy White; son, Carl White and wife, Natasha; daughters, Jeanette White and fiancé, Danny Murray, and Carol Osborne; grandchildren, Kelsi White, Haley White, Megan Dye, Abigail Osborne, Ashley Vanderpool and Brandon Puckett; sisters, Mildred Chafin of Lebanon, Jenny Salyers and Audrey Lampkins, both of Dickensonville; and brother Richard White of Lebanon.
