Mary Ellen Sauls
Mary Ellen Sauls, 77, of Honaker, died Aug. 3, 2005 at her residence.
Born June 1, 1928, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Columbus and Myrtie Lee Honaker Price.
A lifelong resident of the Russell County area, she was a homemaker and a member of Finney Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Sauls; one son, Edd Sauls; three sisters, Betty Honaker, Elgie Wolford and Dosie Mae Peevy; and four brothers, Taze Price, Douglas Price, Otis Banner Price and Paul Price.
Survivors: daughters, Eliza Wilkerson and husband, Danny, of Raeford, NC, Claire Stinson of Kingsport, TN, Minnie Musick and husband, Stephen, of Honaker; sons, Luther Sauls and Roy C. Sauls and wife, Wanda, all of Honaker; sister, Molly Johnson; brothers, Grady Price, Henry Price, George Price, John Lee Price and Coy Price; grandchildren, Kevin Sauls, Karen McGlothlin, Jackie McElroy, Donna King, Heather Stinson, Sarah Musick, Matthew Musick, Charity Musick and John Musick; six great-grandchildren; one expected great-grandchild; special friend, Bonnie Grizzle; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 6 at Finney Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.
Interment followed in the Sauls Family cemetery in Honaker.
Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Edna Nancy Shortt
Edna Nancy Mullins Shortt, 86, of the Belfast community in Russell County, died Aug. 4, 2005 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George Washington and Sarah Honaker Mullins.
She was a minister of the Pentecostal Holiness Church for 56 years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Shortt; two infant daughters; one brother, Andrew Mullins; and two sisters, Faye Lester and Viola Proffitt.
Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Howard (Jean) Patton of Richlands, Mrs. Herm (Anna Ruth) Keene of Richmond; sons, Russell Shortt of Bristol, TN, Jack Shortt of Marshville, WI, Donald Paul Shortt of Cedar Bluff, Billy Lee Shortt of North East, MD, Danny Lynn Shortt of Richlands; 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Denton officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
John “Ken” Smith
John “Ken” McKinley Smith, of North Tazewell, went to be with Jesus, his master, Aug. 2, 2005 at Chilhowie following a brief illness.
Born in the Dryfork section of North Tazewell, he was a son of the late George W. and Amanda Polly Smith.
He had made his home in the North Tazewell area his entire life. He was a retired truck driver with Pet Milk Inc. He was a member of Dryfork Assembly of God. He served in the US Army as a Master Sergeant in Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Smith, Vertie Mae Smith, and one brother, Thomas Smith.
Survivors: sisters, Nola and Rev. William Spann and Mary E. Smith, all of Glade Springs, Margaret and Johnie French of North Tazewell, Phyllis and James White of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Carl Smith and Della of Glade Springs, Joseph Smith and Darlene of Bristol, VA; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Smith of Baptist Valley; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and step nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 4 at 1 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Troy Bartley and Rev. William Spann officiating.
Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Barns-Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell conducted military graveside rites.
Anna Louise Thompson
Anna Louise Thompson, 93, of Tazewell, died Aug. 2, 2005 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell.
Born May 18, 1912 in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Ezekiel and Henrietta Campbell Holley.
She attended Tazewell County Schools. She was a member of the Wilburn United Methodist Church in Tazewell and dedicated her life to the church, serving the church by singing in the choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard B. Thompson, four sisters and four brothers. Her life centered around her family, her church, and her community.
Survivors: sister, Mrs. Arthur Woody, of Philadelphia, PA; sister-in-law, Daisy Holley of Tazewell; nephews, Ezekiel Holley, III, David Holley, and Herbert Thompson; nieces, Vickie L. Holley, Dorothy Howard, Glenda Holley, and Frances Holley; and a host of many other relatives and friends.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with The Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Entombment followed in Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Bluefield, VA.
Goldie Deanna White
Goldie Deanna White, 74, of Cedar Bluff, died Aug. 5, 2005 at her home.
Born June 13, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Carrie Gilbert Lester.
She was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one son, Danny Lester.

Myrtle Linkous Atwood
Myrtle Linkous Atwood, a long-time resident of Amonate and Tazewell, and widow of William Glen Atwood died July 26, 2005 in San Diego, CA, where she had been living with her son for the past six years.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and Fincastle Baptist Church in Tazewell. She had the good fortune of traveling extensively throughout the United States over the past years. Sadly, she recently lost her dear companion “Nugget”. She was a loving and compassionate person and her memory will be held in the hearts of her family and friends.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Wm. E. and Margaret Atwood; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Donald Holmes; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two sisters; and two brothers.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Fincastle Baptist Church in Tazewell with the Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Eugene Boardwine
Eugene Boardwine, 76, of Belfast, died July 27, 2005.
Born in Washington County July 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Anthony King and Georgia Tuggle Boardwine.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Anthony Boardwine, several brothers and one sister.
Survivors: wife, Mary Lou Harless Boardwine; children, Philip Boardwine and wife, Judy, Richard Boardwine and wife, Jenny, Mary Alda Boardwine, Becky Ann Holmes, and Jennifer Ball, all of Belfast, Beverly Boardwine of the Green Valley section of Lebanon, Stacy Boardwine of Rosedale, Kathy Holmes and husband, Richard, and Jamey Boardwine and wife, Donna, all of Paint Lick; daughter-in-law, Annissa Boardwine; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; and a special friend, Doug Allen.
The funeral was conducted July 29 at 2 p.m. at Owens Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Doug Allen officiating.
Interment followed at Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Rev. Edna Byrd
Rev. Edna Ozella Mabe Byrd, 85, of the Kents Ridge section of Cedar Bluff, died July 27, 2005 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born June 30, 1920 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late James F. and Maude Keen Mabe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arch McKinley Byrd on May 5, 2005; two brothers, James S. Mabe and Roy Mabe; and three sisters, Opal Cook, Goldie Smith Miller and Pauline Mabe.
Survivors: daughters, Mary Hill and husband, James, Shirley Justus and husband, Truitt, and Edward Byrd and wife, Mary, all of Raven, Lettie and Dwrey of Richlands, Dianna Breedlove and husband, James, of Pounding Mill; sons, Nathaniel Byrd and wife, Dawn, of Cedar Bluff; sister, Emily Armstrong of Richlands; brother, Doug Keen of Red Root Ridge; 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 30 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bill Marcum and Rev. Jess Lambert officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Hillard Clevinger, Jr.
Hillard Clevinger, Jr., 60, of Maxie, died July 29, 2005 at his home from a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Hillard and Hazel Hale Clevinger of Maxie.
He was a graduate of Grundy High School Class of 1963, a graduate of Pikeville College Class of 1966 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He taught school for three years in the Buchanan County School System.
He was employed for 36-years as an Environmental Health Supervisor with Cumberland Plateau Health District, supervising Buchanan and Dickenson Counties. He enjoyed spending time with his son, was an avid gardener and a collector of antique miniature cars and enjoyed collecting early recordings of T.V. Variety shows. He was a great fan of the Miami Dolphins.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Johnny Allen Clevinger, and one nephew, Terry Dean Clevinger.
Additional survivors: son, James Everett Clevinger of Grundy; former wife, Sandy Clevinger of Grundy; brothers, Les and wife, Betty Clevinger, of Pounding Mill, Roger and wife, Sharon Clevinger, of Lebanon, Terry and wife, Anita Clevinger of Maxie; sister, Theresa and husband, Dennis Wells, of Atlanta, GA; four nieces; one nephew; and three great-nieces.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Ronnie Sliger officiating.
Burial followed in the Clevinger Family cemetery at Maxie.
Ruel Dye
Ruel Dye, 74, of the Lynn Springs section of Swords Creek, died July 27, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.
Born June 13, 1931 in Swords Creek, he was a son of James Patton and Annie Bostic Dye.
A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area, he was a member of the Lynn Springs Free Will Baptist Church. He was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Jewell Ridge Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1594.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Dye; his step-mother, Dora Hess Dye; four brothers, Bert Dye, Ken Dye, James Ray and Bill Dye; and six sisters, Beulah Hubbard, Marie Patton, Vida Harris, Geneva Hess, Maryann Dye, and Evelyn Dye.
Survivors: wife of 54 years, Della Mae Dye; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Brenda Dye and Randy and Sue Dye, all of Swords Creek, Keith and Angela Dye of Belfast; daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Mann of Lynn Springs, Donna and Billy Lester of Belfast, Loretta Lynn and Johnny Rasnake of Big A Mountain; brothers, Frank Dye of Honaker, Perry Dye of Swords Creek; sisters, Ebbie Hess and Louise Dye, both of Swords Creek; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted July 30 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Larry Dye, Rev. Tommy Dye, Rev. Russell Corns, and Rev. Sylvia Price officiating.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Virginia “Gen” Etter
Virginia “Gen” Etter, 56, of Burkes Garden, died July 29, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born July 31, 1948 in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of Vicie Mae Cornwell Franklin of Chilhowie and the late Howard Franklin Vanhoozier.
She was a member of the Burkes Garden Church of Christ in Burkes Garden.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Vanhoozier.
Additional survivors: husband, Pat Etter; daughters, Missy Brown of Richlands, Sharon Denise Etter of Burkes Garden; son, Michael Allen Etter of the home; sister, Ann Rich of Chilhowie; brothers, Wayne Vanhoozier of Glade Springs, Steve Vanhoozier of Chilhowie, Jim Vanhoozier of the Pisgah community of Tazewell; and three granddaughters, Chastidy Brown, Charlotte Brown and Angel Nicole Brown.
Graveside services were conducted July 31 at 2 p.m. at Central Church cemetery in Burkes Garden with Minister Bill Brown officiating.
