Richard E. Thompson
Richard Elmore Thompson, 70, of the Pounding Mill area of Tazewell, died Sept. 4, 2005 at a Tazewell area hospital after a brief illness.
Born at Gratton, he was the son of the late Leck A. and Helen Faye Melvin Thompson.
He had a passion for raising and showing horses. He was a retired service manager for McCann Motors, having worked for them for over 35 years. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Bluefield Moose Lodge # 1076 and a member of the Tazewell Co. Horseman Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Roxie Blankenship, Mary Sayers and Stella Shelton.
Survivors: special friend, Vivian King of Pounding Mill; ex-wife and mother of his children, Ann Thompson of Tazewell; daughters, Barbara A. Lester and husband, Roscoe, of Tazewell, Patricia Buchanan of DeLand, FL; sons, Tony A. Thompson and wife, Christine, and Terry W. Thompson and wife, Kathy, all of Tazewell; sisters, Cora Brown of Gratton, Faye Lambert of Thompson Valley; brothers, Ralph Thompson of Gettysburg, PA, Fred Thompson of Thompson Valley; grandsons, T.J. Thompson of Christiansburg, Jeffery W. Thompson and Amanda of Tazewell; granddaughters, Kayla and Mika Buchanan; and one great-granddaughter, Autumn Rose Thompson.
Services will be conducted Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie officiating.
Interment will follow at the Mt. Olivet cemetery in Gratton.
Nanell Akers Barnett
Nanell Akers Barnett, of Tazewell, died Aug. 24, 2005 at Bluefield, VA, following a long illness.
Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late George Martel and Nancy Ellen Fickle Akers.
She had made her home in Abingdon, before moving to Tazewell 18 years ago. When living in Abingdon, she was an active member of Abingdon United Methodist Church. She was employed until retirement at Washington County National Bank. She also was employed at the Washington County Treasurer’s Department.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Monroe Barnett; three sons, Ronald Akers Barnett, James Vance Barnett and George William Barnett; two brothers, George Akers and Elmer Akers; and one sister, Alice Gilpin.
Survivors: daughter, Rebecca Barnett West and husband, David, of Tazewell; grandchildren, James Christopher Barnett and wife, Nancy, of Wilmington, NC, Mary Barnett Kemp and husband, Jeff, of Blountville, TN, John Charles Rice and wife, Tabitha, of Greenville, SC, William Douglas Barnett and wife, Deanne, of Chesterfield, BreAnna Leigh West of Tazewell; great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ann Goodman, Briana Lynn Barnett, Cameron Evans, Jordon Evans, Logan Kemp, and Josh Kemp; and special family and friends, Pam and Charlie Rice, Betty and Raymond West, Rusty and Janie West, Robin and Will Kelly, Peggy McGlothlin, Edith Hatcher, Kathryn Harris, David Akers, Phyllis A. Mink, and George Akers, III.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. at KnollKreg Memorial Park Mausoleum in Abingdon with Reverend Larry Ramey officiating.

Edith I. Blankenship
Edith Irene Blankenship, 86, of Richlands, died Aug. 25, 2005 at her home, following a lengthy illness.
Born March 17, 1919 at Belfast, she was the daughter of the late R.W. and Lucille Fogleman Settle, both Russell County natives.
She lived in the Cedar Bluff and Richlands area all of her adult life. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a dedicated member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church for more than 65 years. She was a loving and faithful wife for 54 years to her late husband, Earl W. Blankenship.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren H. and Garrett T. Settle, and one great-great grandchild.
Survivors: son, Herley E. Blankenship and wife, Betty Lou; daughter, Gwendolyn “Dottye” Bennington; sister, Elizabeth Monk of Lebanon; grandchildren, Mary Ann Keene and husband, Randy, Tereasa “Terrie” Basham and husband, Tommy, Sherri Cherie Blankenship, Nita Hess and husband, Bill, Robin McGlothlin and husband, Darrell, Thomas Earl Blankenship and wife, Michelle; great – grandchildren, Lindsey Croston and husband, Jonathan, Joshua Keene, Brandi Smith and husband, Scott, Jeremy Keene, Sara Creppel, Austin Hess, Eric Hess, Luke Creppel and Grace Noel Blankenship; special friend and caregivers, Wanda Stacey, Christina Hess and Michelle Carter.

Mary O. Lambert Brown
Mary O. Lambert Brown, 89, of Tazewell, died following a brief illness Aug. 27, 2005 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.
Born Sept. 21, 1915 at Doran, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Nora Hager Lambert.
She had lived in Tazewell County her entire life, 36 years in the Cove community and the last 30 years on Elm Street in Tazewell. One of her greatest pleasures was having her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren coming for visits and being able to cook for them. She also enjoyed working in her flower gardens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Reese W. Brown in April 1975; one daughter, Gertrude G. Brown Dills; three sons, Joseph K. Brown, Bill T. Barnes Brown, and Charlie R. Brown; five sisters; and five brothers.
Survivors: daughters, Ruth Angles of Tazewell, Maggie Phillips and husband, Jerry, and Sue Smith and husband, Garland, all of Thompson Valley, Jenny Webb and husband, Bill, of Bluefield, WV; sons. John Brown and wife, Martha, and Reese Brown, Jr. and wife, Pauline, all of Thompson Valley, Robert Brown and wife, Darlene, of Adamstown, MD; 23 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; sister, Molly Reeves and husband, Elwood, of Oxford, PA; and brother-in-law, Lacy Lambert of Claypool Hill.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Eddie Nash and Rev Troy Bartley officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
Gracie Compton
Gracie Compton, 82, of the Combs Ridge section, Council, died Aug. 23, 2005 at her home.
Born May 16, 1923 in Elk Creek, she was a daughter of the late Emory and Margie Dotson.
A lifelong resident of the Buchanan county area, she was a member of the Mt. View Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Compton, one son, Willie Compton, and several brothers and sisters. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: son, Ervin Compton of Council; grandchildren, Devonna Colley, Randy Compton, Rhonda Lester, Cindy Willis, Angie Presley, and Brent Compton and wife, Dee; special granddaughter-in-law, Donna Compton; special caregiver, Patty Cook; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 26 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Don Sullivan officiating.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Scottie Dewayne Deel
Scottie Dewayne Deel, 35, of Cedar Bluff, formerly of Grundy, died Aug. 22, 2005 at his home.
Born in Michigan, he was a son of Shelby Jean Elswick Deel of Cedar Bluff and the late Edgar Deel.
He was a 1988 graduate of Grundy High School.
Additional survivors: son, Tyler Scott Deel of Abingdon; former wife, April J. Endicott of Abingdon; brother, Kennith J. Deel and wife, Becky, of Tazewell; sister, Christina Marie O’Quinn and husband, Justin, of Cedar Bluff; niece, Nikki C. Deel of Tazewell; nephew, Logan C. O’Quinn of Cedar Bluff; and many friends.
Services were private.

Mary (Mae) Earls
Mary (Mae) Stump Earls, 79, of Doran, died Aug. 22, 2005 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late William and Sarah Lester Stump.
She was a lover and supporter of all animals.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Earls in April, 1996; two sisters, Ida Crawford and Mamie Plaster; and one brother, Hubert Stump.
Survivors: sisters, Louise Stilwell and husband, Allen, of Raven, Myrtle Teats and Marie Dinguss, both of Cleveland, OH; brother, Claude Stump and wife, Bertha, of Doran; sister-in-law, Opal Stump of Swords Creek; special friends, Terry and Bobby Ray and children; home care workers, Tammy Wright and Kathy Clifton; and several nieces and nephews.

Ollie Gaye Helton
Ollie Gaye Helton, 100, of Oakwood, died Aug. 24, 2005 at her home.
Born Sept. 28, 1904 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Aaron Lilburn and Mary Catherine Mize Hurt.
She had spent most of her life in the Buchanan county area and was of the Baptist faith. She was a recent member of the Daughters of the Confederacy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Helton; two daughters, Bernice McClanahan and Maggie Daniels; two brothers, Clyde Hurt and Teap Hurt; one sister, Lillian Hall; and several grandchildren. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughters, Myrtle Clark of Middleport, OH, Lois Stump of Columbus, OH, Margaret Cremeans of Rutland, OH, Ruth Smith of Rowe, Barbara Blankenship of Oakwood, Juanita McGlothlin of Brooksville, FL, Lola Rainey of Salem; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Robert Keith Lockhart
Robert Keith Lockhart, 53, of Raven, died Aug. 19, 2005 in a Richmond hospital.
Born Oct. 3, 1951 in Jewell Ridge, he was a son of the late Roby and Virginia Lockhart.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a graduate of Richlands High School. He was a disabled truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Rebecca Dye.
Survivors: wife, Jennifer Lockhart of Tazewell; his fiancée, Lisa Byrd, of Raven, and her children, Arminda Byrd, Thomas Byrd, and Samuel Byrd, all of Raven; special friends, Lorraine Ward, Cynthia Ward, Niketta Ward, and Melanie Ward; and step-daughters, Jessica Nelson and Alisha Kennedy, both of Pittsburgh, PA.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Ralph Shortridge, and Rev. Charlie McGlothlin officiating.
Interment followed in the Blankenship-Ward cemetery at Rowe.
Jackie Darrell Matney
Jackie Darrell Matney, 50, of Cedar Bluff, died Aug. 28, 2005 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late J.R. and Verna Matney.
Survivors: sisters, Wanda Pruitt and husband, Donald, of Thompson Valley, Phyllis Miniard and husband, Matt, of Lexington, KY; nephews, Donald Ray Pruitt, Jr. and wife, Maggie, of Thompson Valley,
Christopher Bradley Pruitt and wife, Cassie, of Richlands; and niece, Emily Miniard of Lexington, KY.
The funeral was conducted Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
Graveside services were private.
Anis Suella (Sue) Mullins
Anis Suella (Sue) Mullins, of Richlands, died August 29, 2005 following a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rosbal J. (Peanut) Mullins; her parents, Pat and Anis Hall; and one sister, Jo Hulme.
She moved to Richlands from Haysi in 1974. She was a founding member of Bartlick Presbyterian Church and a former member of Clinch Valley Hospital women’s auxiliary.
Survivors: daughters, Peggy Engelke (Vincent) of Augusta, GA, Rita McDougald (Mac) of Cumming, GA; sisters, Ruth Sturgille of Clinchport, Charlene Porter of Kingsport, TN, Peggy Mullins of Beckley, WV; grandchildren, Hagan Ratliff (Heidi), Ross, Houston, and Molly McDougald; and great-grandchild, Kendal Claire Ratliff (soon to arrive).
Visitation will be Aug. 31 at Hurst Scott Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m.
Graveside services will be Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. in Greenhills cemetery at Claypool Hill.
