Mr. Paul Edward Roberts, 77, of Chester, Va., passed away peacefully after a long and gracious battle with Parkinson's on Tuesday, April 17, 2001. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen Toney Roberts; and their children, Paul Edward Roberts Jr., Sharon Roberts
Smith and her husband, Samuel Parham Smith, D. Timothy Roberts, Toney Roberts Fitzgerald and her husband, Robert Thomas Fitzgerald Jr., and E. Robin Roberts; and seven grandchildren, Paul Christopher Hurt and his wife, Elizabeth Watkins Hurt, Elizabeth Gray Smith, Samuel Tyler Smith, Kyle Ramsey Roberts, Britney Gray Fitzgerald, Kathryn Ann Fitzgerald, and Grace Owen Fitzgerald. Mr. Roberts proudly served his country in the Army during WWII in the European and Pacific Campaigns. After returning from the service he remained in the Reserves for 17 years. Mr. Roberts earned two degrees, one in Chemistry from the University of Richmond and the other in Pharmacology from the Medical College of Virginia. He was a member of the SAE fraternity. After 29 years in business, Mr. Roberts retired as co-owner of Circle View Pharmacy in Hopewell, Va. He was a member of the Chester Baptist Church and was involved in the Lions Club. Mr. Roberts strong and energetic zest for life enriched all those who knew and loved him. Funeral Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Cbester, with Dr. Ed Stansfield, pastor of Chester Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 p.m.

June M. Winslow Rohatch of Richmond, Va., departed this life on April 14, 2001. Survived by her husband, Francis T. Bradley Hunt Smith, age 45, of Chesterfield, died of cancer on Thursday, April 12, 2001, in his home. He was born in Glen Cove, New York, and graduated from Hampshire College in Massachusetts in 1978. He was director of Information Services for the Central Atlantic Division of HCA Healthcare Corporation. Mr.
Smith will be remembered as a man of immense integrity, honesty, fairness, creativity, compassion, and respect for others. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife, Sarah H. Smith; and daughter, Elizabeth Smith, both of Chesterfield; and two brothers, Gregory C.

Carl P. Synder Jr., 45, of Richmond, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. He is survived by his longtime companion, Raymond C. Griffis Jr.; three brothers, Richard Kozen, David Axtell and James Axtell; one sister, Lynda Axtell; cousin, Esther Pierce; and many, many dear friends. Bruce C. Stanley, 52, of Studley, died April 15, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Debbie C. Stanley; three sons, Jason, Michael and Daniel Stanley; his parents, Ernest and Gladys Stanley; two sisters, Marilyn Gooch and her husband, Ronnie, Phyllis Wood and her husband, J.C., all of Studley; He is also survived by three nieces, two nephews, one great-nephew, one great-niece, and many other beloved family members and numerous friends. Bruce was a member of Enon United Methodist Church, where he sang with the Gospel 7 for 25 years. He was active with the Atlee High School Marching Band and Band Boosters. He played softball in the Hanover Senior Softball League. His remains rest at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee Davis Rd., where the family will receive friends Tuesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where services will be held 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Stella Hanks Sullivan, age 78, of Keysville, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. She was the widow of Linwood L. Sullivan. She was a retired employee of the City of Richmond, Dept. of Public Utilities. Surviving are two devoted sisters-in-law, Mabel G. Hanks and Louise H. Hanks, both of Keysville; 10 nieces and 11 nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Browning Funeral Home, with interment in the Cool Springs Christian Church Cemetery. SWEENEY
Veronica Donovan Sweeney passed away at her Richmond, Virginia, home on April 14, 2001. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 47 years, Maj. Gen. Arthur Hamilton Sweeney Jr., retired Army officer (of Parkersburg, West Virginia), a highly decorated veteran of World War II and Vietnam. Veronica, born in Sydney, Australia, the daughter of the late James O'Donovan and Catherine Carmody O'Donovan of Limerick, Ireland, was a member of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Richmond. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Donovan; and sisters, Kathleen Donovan, May Brophy and Doris Anthony of Sydney, Australia. Mrs. Sweeney had an illustrious career with the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific with the Commanding General, Army Base Headquarters in Sydney and later in Japan with the Commanding General of 8th US Army of Occupation under Gen. Douglas MacArthur. She also served with UNRRA in Shanghai, China, and Manila, The Philippines. On her arrival in the United States in 1948, Mrs. Sweeney settled in Washington, D.C., and served on the staff of the Indian Embassy, the Pakistan Embassy and the British Embassy. Following this, she was employed at the White House as an administrative officer in the office of the military aides to the President. This employment continued until her marriage to Maj. Gen. (then Major) Arthur H. Sweeney in 1952. During her years as a military wife, Mrs. Sweeney accompanied her husband throughout his career assignments as attache to the American Embassy in Switzerland and to further overseas assignments in Cambodia, Germany and Vietnam, as well as assignments in the United States until his retirement at Fort McPherson, Georgia, in 1978. Following military retirement, they relocated to Richmond, Virginia, where Gen. Sweeney was appointed as personal assistant to Louis Reynolds, and later as vice president of Reynolds Metals International. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated for Mrs. Sweeney at St. Edward's Church on Dolfield Road at 11 a.m. on April 23. Her remains will be available for visitation at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on April 24. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Virginia Mid-Atlantic Chapter, 11620 Busy St., Richmond, Virginia 23236, for application to Mrs. Sweeney's ongoing project at the McGuire Veterans Hospital.

David Charles Teat of Mechanicsville, formerly of Sutton Courtenay, England, died Saturday, April 14, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Donna Murphy Teat; a stepdaughter, Rebecca Lynn Murphy of Phoenix, Ariz.; mother, Joyce S. Teat of Sutton Courtenay, England; sister, Jennifer Arnold of Oxford, England; brother, Larry Teat of Abingdon, England; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Teat was the squadron commander for the Hanover County Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol, was a member of the Mann Page Lodge No. 157 AF&AM in Providence Forge, the Abbey Lodge in Abingdon, England, and was a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. Bertha E. Thomas, 72, of Sandston, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Clyde E. Thomas (Mickey Mouse); one daughter, Barbara Ann Elswick; two sons, Andrew Gerald and Clyde Wayne Thomas; a stepdaughter, Patsy Parrish; two brothers, Owen and Nelson Edwards; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
