Calvin Keen

Calvin Keen, 76, of the Keen Mountain area of Buchanan County, died March 14, 2004 at Buchanan General Hospital at Grundy following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Squire William and Lillie Horn Keen.

He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life, a member of Big Branch Church of Christ, a retired coal miner and a member of United Mine Workers of America.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eliza Meadows Keen, Aug. 18. 1992; three sisters, Mandy, Pinkie and Gracie Marie; and one brother, Thomas Andrew Keen.

Survivors: sisters, Annie Meadows, Minnie and husband, Roy Brown, and Bessie and husband, Frank Vandyke, all of Raven, Gaynell and husband, Donald Vandyke, of Keen Mountain; and brothers, Evans "Sambo" Keen of Wytheville, and Perry Keen and Squire W. and wife, Jean Keen, all of Raven.

The funeral was conducted March 16 at 1 p.m. at the Antioch Pentecostal Holiness Church on Keen Mountain with Rev. Troy Lester and Evg. Stanley Smith officiating.

Burial followed in the Antioch cemetery on Keen Mountain.

Services were held at the church March 15 at 7 p.m. with Evg. Stanley Smith.

Grundy Funeral Home in Grundy was in charge of arrangements.

Dana Jo Sayers

Dana Jo Muir Sayers, 48, of Richlands, died suddenly March 14, 2004 at her home.

Born in Raven, she was a daughter of Bobby Joe and Nell Ball Muir of Raven.

She was a life long resident of the Raven and Richlands areas, was a 1974 graduate of Richlands High School, and was a Licensed Practical Nurse for 29 years. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, and friend. She had a healing touch and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Additional survivors: daughters: Greta Sayers Hurst and husband, Jeff, and Heather Nicole Sayers, all of Richlands, sisters, Rebecca Lynn Fox and husband, Michael, of Richlands, Tina Denise Stiltner of Doran; brother, Robert Lee Muir and wife, Debbie, of Doran; beautiful and special granddaughters, Bailey Nicole Hurst and Addison Jill Hurst, both of Richlands; one niece; five nephews; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

The funeral will be conducted March 17 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. David Brannock officiating.

Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Richlands First United Methodist Church Preschool, 402 Suffolk Ave., Richlands, VA 24641.

Edith M. Sneed

Edith Mildred Sneed, 89, of Richlands, died March 12, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.

Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Maxine Stevens Tiller.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cortis C. Sneed; one son, Ronnie Lee Sneed; four brothers; and two sisters. She was a member of the Davis Mountain Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors: son, Arvin Sneed and wife, Micheal, of Odem, TX; daughters, Gloria Jean Salvatore and husband, Richard, of Elizabethton, TN, Barbara Ann Horton and husband, Ronnie, of Short Gap, Patricia Byrd and husband, Noah, of Richlands; brothers, Paul Tiller of St. Augustine, FL, Arnvil Tiller of Roanoke; sisters, Susie Holmes of Richlands, Eramae Thomas of Winter Haven, FL; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted March 15 at 11 a.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. James Horton officiating.

Burial followed in the Hankins cemetery at Richlands.

Lucy C. Stinson

Lucy C. Stinson, 88, of Honaker, went to be with the Lord on March 9, 2004 at her home.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Forrest and Margie Bonnie Combs.

A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Mt. Zion Free Will Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to help other people. She was a seamstress, making beautiful quilts and clothes for other people in need. She loved to cook with a specialty in biscuits and rolls and always fed anybody that came to her home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Stinson; one son, Dewey Stinson; four sisters, Lola Combs, Lelia Robertson, Lacey Musick and Willie Combs; and eight brothers, four infant brothers, and Roger Combs, Paul Combs, Samuel Combs, Jr. and Joseph Combs.

Survivors: daughter, Juanita Hubbard and husband, Thomas Kyle, of Shady Valley, TN; sons, Glen Stinson and wife, Pamela, of Honaker, James H. Stinson and wife, JoAnn, of North Augusta, SC; grandchildren, Vicki and Roy Lothery, Mark and Donna Stinson, Glenda and Chris Johnson, Robert and Anita Rose, Ava and Larry White, Tracy Hunsucker, David and Meisha Stinson, Patrick and Amy Stinson and Leisa and Stan Mulliken; step-grandchild, Tony and Millie Honaker; brother, Sherman Patrick Combs of Honaker; sisters, Virginia Wise of Abingdon, Celia Josephine Dickenson of Alexandria; 18 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted March 12 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Virgil Musick and Rev. Giles Wilson officiating.

Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.

Daniel M. Young

Daniel Mitchell Young, 33, of North Tazewell, died March 14, 2004 at his home.

Born in Richmond, he was a son of Luther Mitchell Young and Betty Jean Rutherford Young of North Tazewell.

He was active with the area’s youth in various sports, including coaching Little League Football and working with the Tazewell Swim Team.

Additional survivors: wife, Angie Asbury Young; son, Cameron Young of the home; daughters, Amber Young and Jension Young, both of the home; brothers, Donnie Young of Salem, Mike Young of Cowen; sisters, Missy Hill and Angie J. Young, both of North Tazewell, Amy Hill of Tazewell; maternal grandparents, Reece and Elsie Taylor of North Tazewell; father-in-law, C.R. Asbury and wife, Neta, of Richlands; mother-in-law, Dianta Asbury of Bluefield, WV; two nieces; and nine nephews.

The funeral will be conducted March 17 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Brother Tim Woods officiating.

Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12 noon March 17.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to Mrs. Angie Young, Glen Rae Trailer Park, Lot #38, North Tazewell, VA 24630 toward a fund for their children.

Junior R. Clifton

Junior Robert Clifton, 51, of Patterson, died March 7, 2004 in a Buchanan County hospital following a long illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Dewey Robert and Lydia Keene Clifton.

He was a disabled coal miner. He was a member of the 2232 Sub District 28 Local 20 of the UMWA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Tom Clifton, and two sisters, Sadie Clifton and Bessie Clifton.

Survivors: daughter, Melissa Gail Clifton of the home; son, Adam Clifton of the home; friend, John Anthony Mullins; sisters, Juanita Vance, Bonnie Keen and Garnie Keen, all of Patterson; sister-in-law, Bevelene Clifton of Patterson; and brothers, Andrew Clifton, Arthur Clifton, Joe Clifton, Rondal Clifton and James Clifton, all of Patterson.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. March 11 at the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Keen Mountain with Rev. Mike Rife, Rev. J.D. Keen and Rev. Luther Bowman officiating.

Burial will follow in Antioch cemetery at Keen Mountain.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. March 9 and 10.

Doris K. Flanner

Doris Keene Flanner, 70, of Tazewell, died March 5, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born May 27, 1933 at Jewell Ridge, she was a daughter of the late Harrison and Maude May Altizer Keene.

She was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Baptist Valley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Victoria Flanner; one sister, Margaret Pruitt; two brothers, Earl Keene and Harry Keene; and one nephew, Ricky Flanner.

Survivors: husband of 49 years, Ray Flanner; son, Michael Flanner and wife, Janet, of Monroe, NC; daughters, Wanda Angles of Tazewell, Joy Presley and husband, Ed, of Woodstock; brother, James Keene and wife, Maggie, of Tazewell; sister, Shirley Flanner and husband, Roy, of Tazewell; grandchildren, Brad Coan and wife, Kristen, and Matt Coan, all of Monroe, B. Ray Angles of Christiansburg, Bane Angles and wife, Crystal, of Cincinnati, OH, Kallin Presley and Jakob Presley, both of Woodstock; great-grandson, Preston Coan; special nieces, Theresa Moore and husband, Rick, of Quinton, Anita Mitchell and husband, Bobby, of Tazewell, Paula Asbury and husband, Eddie, of Cedar Bluff; and special grandchild, Sarah Anderson of Blacksburg.

Services were conducted March 6 at 8 p.m. at the Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell with Walter Schwitzerlett and Bane Angles officiating.

A private graveside service was conducted for the family on March 7.

Margaret "Betty" Honaker

Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" Price Honaker, 89, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, died March 2, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Myrtie Honaker Price.

She was the oldest member of the Bethany Baptist Church on Big A Mountain, she had been a member of the church for 70 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, of 47 years, Paul Henry Honaker; one daughter, Mandy Lovis; one granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Honaker; one daughter-in-law, Rita Austin Honaker; one son-in-law, Harold Hess; two sisters, Elgie Wolford and Doshia Peevey; and three brothers, Banner Price, Taze Price and Douglas Price.

Survivors: daughter, Dolly Marie Hess of Honaker; sons, Jesse Honaker and wife, Pearlie, Harold Benny Honaker, Jimmy Honaker and wife, Kathy, Jerry Honaker and wife, Ruth, Samuel Honaker and wife, Regina, and Bradley Honaker and wife, Karen, all of Honaker, Halford Honaker and wife, Janice, of Alexander, Larry Wayne Honaker and wife, Saundra, of Swords Creek, Calvin Honaker and wife, Nina, of Norton; sisters, Mary Ellen Sauls of Honaker, Molly Johnson of New Jersey; brothers, Paul Price, Henry Price and George Price, all of Honaker, Grady Price of Pounding Mill, John Lee Price of North Carolina, Coy Albert Price of Baptist Valley; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted March 5 at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Vonley Pruitt and Rev. Stephen Musick officiating.

Interment followed in Lockhart cemetery at Honaker.

Phyllis "Tootie" James

Phyllis Hazel "Tootie" Vance James, 63, of South Boston, died March 7, 2004 in a South Boston hospital.

Born in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Viola Dotson Vance.

She had lived in South Boston for the past 13 years, moving there from the Honaker area. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ at Blackford.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Danny Vance.

Survivors: son, Beacher James of Nathalie; daughters, Gayle Stinson of Buchanan, Phyllis James of Hillsville; sisters, Eula Gay Helton of Columbus, OH, Sue Street of Rowe, Brenda Osborne of Honaker, Rita Stevens of Rosedale, Lisa Musick of Honaker; brothers, Beacher Vance of Delaware, OH, Estil Vance of Honaker; and grandchildren, Frank Stinson, Jr., Torrey Stinson and Jonathan Stinson, all of Buchanan, and Marlena Owens and Melissa Owens, both of Galax.

The funeral will be conducted March 10 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Peerman Lester officiating.

Interment will follow in the Clark cemetery on Big A Mountain.

Loraine P. Justus

Loraine P. Justus, 77, of Route #5, Grundy, formerly of Hurley, died March 6, 2004 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy following an extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Maggie Justus Payne, Sr.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Hurley, a graduate of Hurley High School, a retired waitress and a housewife.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow D. Justus on March 12, 1994; one son, Jimmy Justus; one sister, Ruby Payne; and one brother, Robert Payne.

Survivors: daughter, Mildred Bailey of Birchleaf; sons, Roger Justus of Grundy, Evangelist Bill Justus of Raven; sister, Mrs. Fern Whited of Route 1, Grundy; brothers, Dan Payne, Jr., of Denver, CO, Jack Payne of Route 1, Grundy; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted March 10 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Mike Rife and Evg. Rusty Owens officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.

A song service was conducted March 8 at 7 p.m. and regular services were conducted March 9 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
