Ronald W. Watson

Ronald Wayne Watson, 51, of Cedar Bluff, died March 29, 2004 at a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born at Greensboro, NC, he was a son of the late Carolyn Starr Watson.

He was a disabled railroad signalman for Norfolk and Southern Railroad and a member of the Brotherhood Of Railroad Signalman Local #77 of Roanoke. He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area the past 15 years and attended Community Heights Baptist Church.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: wife, Sandra Lee Turner Watson; daughter, Charise Watson of Columbus, OH; and son, Wesley Eric Watson and wife, Rebecca Diane, of Radford.

A memorial service will be conducted March 31 at 11 a.m. at the Community Heights Baptist Church at Wardell with Rev. Allen Jessee officiating.

Burial will be private.

There will be no visitation.

Hurst Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Frances M. Wilcox

Frances Marie Wilcox, born January 10, 1925 in Meadowview, died March 29, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.

She was the widow of Arthur S. (Junior) Wilcox, Jr.

She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by husband, Arthur S. (Junior) Wilcox, Jr.; one infant son, Johnny Rosenbaum; one brother-in-law, Charlie Wilcox of Richlands; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Parsons of Lenior, NC.

Survivors: granddaughter, Cari Craighead of Alberta, daughter and son-in-law, Murleen and William (Bill) Craighead of Meadowview; brother and his wife, Ray and Ann Jones of Abingdon; sisters, Dorothy Jones and Irma Jones, both of Meadowview, Pat Spradlin and husband, Robert, and their son, David Scruggs, Peggy Meador and husband, Tony, all of Moneta; sisters-in-law, Bly Gobble and Minnie McCracken of Meadowview; brothers-in-law, Isaac Wilcox of Bristol, Kenneth Wilcox of Sidney, OH, Paul Wilcox and Lee Wilcox, both of Meadowview, Coy Parsons of Lenior; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Fred and Linda Catron; caregivers, Sheila Blevins and Beverly Bobo; and members of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.

Funeral services were conducted March 30 at 6:45 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating.

The committal service will be conducted March 31 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glade Spring Volunteer Life Saving Crew, P. O. Box 59, Glade Spring, VA 24340, or to the Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department, P. O. Box 84, Meadowview, VA 24361, or to the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.

Peggy A. Yates

Peggy Ann Yates, 65, of the Corner section of Lebanon, died March 27, 2004 at her home.

Born in Lebanon, she was a daughter of Stella Mae Breeding of Honaker and the late Clyde Smith.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of Miller’s View Primitive Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Lebanon Apparel for 25 years.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Lewis Yates, and one brother, Gerald Breeding.

Additional survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Patricia Yates of Lebanon, Ricky and Debbie Yates of Castlewood; sisters, Vivian Honaker of Honaker, Audrey Fitts of Victoria; brothers, Jack Breeding of Mechanicsville, Dwight Breeding of Virginia; grandchildren, Kayla Fields and husband, B.J., Adrienne Yates and fiancée, Bob Hale, and Nathan Yates; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted March 30 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Joel Turner officiating.

Interment followed in the Yates Family cemetery near the home.

Goldie I. Addison

Goldie Ida Addison, 66, of Cedar Bluff, died March 21, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Wesley and Mary Lula Simmons Byrd.

She was an LPN for Mattie Williams Hospital and Clinch Valley Clinic. She was a member of the Church of God at Seaboard and attended Souls Harbor Bible College.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Wayne Addison; three brothers, Otis Byrd, Bill Byrd and Homer Byrd; and two sisters, Stella VanDyke and Lillie Proffitt.

Survivors: husband, Donald Lee Addison; daughters, Anita Lassiter and husband, Keith, of Panama City, FL, Joyce Barker and husband, John, of Wardell; sons, Richard Addison, John Addison and fiancée, Tammie Brown, Mark Addison and Brandon Addison, all of Richlands; special grandson, Donnie Ascue; brothers, Arch Byrd of Richlands, Earbie Byrd of Claypool Hill; sisters, Sue Branch of Dublin, Thelma Hampton of Wardell; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be conducted March 24 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jackie Payne and Rev. Wesley Addison officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Paul Junior Ball

Paul Junior Ball, 65, of Tazewell, died March 19, 2004 in a Bluefield, WV, hospital following a long illness.

Born in Russell Co., he was the son of the late Luther and Violette Gilbert Lester.

He was a disabled coal miner and mechanic and was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Darren Ball, and one granddaughter, Ashley Michele Ball.

Survivors: wife of 43 years, Linda Anders Ball; sons, Stevie Ball of Tazewell, Darren Ball of the home, Randy Ball and son, Timothy, of Lebanon; daughters, Rita Ball and Tina Ball, both of the home; brother Robert Lester of Baptist Valley; daughter-in-law, Frances Ball of Tazewell; two step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; and special people in his life, Melinda Morales and C.J. Ball.

The funeral was conducted March 23 at 2 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Dannie Short and Rev. Ed Lester officiating.

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Virginia Blackburn

Virginia Lambert Blackburn joined her beloved late husband, Arthur S. Blackburn, March 18, 2004.

Born Nov. 3, 1914, she spent most of her life as a resident of Bandy.

She was the daughter of the late John Milton and Susie Wingo Lambert, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She and her husband were owners of the National Supermarket and Sportsman Shop in Richlands for many years.

She had a great love of antiques and was one of the founding members of the Cedar Bluff Heritage Festival. She was an active member of the Republican Party and assisted at the polls. As an owner and breeder of American Saddlebred horses, she was a familiar face on the show circuit. She had a great love of nature and shared it with her friends. Known by friends as "Granny, " everyone loved her great sense of humor.

Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Samuel R. "Ranny" Blackburn and Lee Anna; granddaughters, Virginia Hearl, Ann Mance and husband Greg, Lynn Baker and husband Kevin, and Maria Williams and husband Jeff; and great-grandchildren, Austin, Morgan, Montana, and Landon.

A remembrance of life service was held at 4 p.m. March 21 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Reverend Bill Keene officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society Ride for Life Horse Show, 670 Cresswood Drive, Richlands, VA 24641.

Ann Parks Bowen

Ann Parks Bowen, 56, of Ferrum, died March 21, 2004, surrounded by family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Macy Wilson Parks.

Survivors: mother, Margaret Cox Parks; husband of 36 years, William Barns Bowen; daughter, Margaret Parks Bowen; son, William Rees Bowen III; daughter-in-law, Heather Anderson Bowen; grandson, Thomas Reese Bowen; and sister, Jane Parks.

A memorial service was conducted March 23 at 2 p.m. in Ferrum College’s Vaughn Chapel at Ferrum.

The family requests donations be made to the Free Clinic of Franklin County, Post Office Box 764, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.

Flora Funeral Service in Rocky Mount was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia D. Brown

Virginia Dinsmore Brown, 73, lately of Gastonia, NC, died Feb. 24, 2004 at her home.

Born at Dante, she was the daughter of the late Jessie Richard and Mary Elizabeth Godsey Dinsmore of Oakwood.

She was a retired teacher who taught in Lynchburg City Public Schools as well as in the Roanoke schools and Anne Arundel Co. schools in Maryland.

Her late husband, Nathan C. Brown, was also a teacher in the Lynchburg school system.

Survivors: daughters, Paula Brown of Gastonia, Grenda Berkley of Goode, special friends and family in Charlotte, Gastonia and Lynchburg, and lifelong relatives and friends in the United States and abroad.

A memorial service will be conducted at Belk Chapel, Queens University of Charlotte at 11 a.m. March 27.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Attn.: Memorial Program, 6500 S. New Hope Rd., Belmont, NC.

Mattie Ruth Lamie Caudill

Mattie Ruth Lamie Caudill, 84, of Tazewell, died March 20, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born in Smyth County, she was a daughter of the late W.H. (Tobe) Lamie and Mattie Buchanan Lamie.

She was a member of the Tazewell Presbyterian Church and attended Dailey’s Chapel United Methodist Church. She was previously employed at the former A-Mart Department Store in Tazewell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar (Cotton) Caudill. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Left to cherish her memories are son, Darryl Caudill, and wife, Nancy, of Springville; daughters, Phyllis Lewis and husband, Jack, of Wilmington, DE, Virginia (Midge) Heller and husband, Mike, of Christiansburg, Almeta Rose and husband, Don, of Tazewell; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and the many children she cared for known to them as "Momma Bill", "Ma Bill", or "Maw Maw".

Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. March 22 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell with the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie and Dr. James H. Grant, Jr. officiating.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. March 23 at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to a favorite children’s charity, or church.

Betty B. Cundiff

Betty Bennett Cundiff, 73, of Falls Mills, died March 12, 2004 at her home.

Born in Woodlawn, she was a daughter of the late Herman S. Burnette and Nina Redd Burnette.

She was a member of the Falls Mills United Methodist Church. In addition to being a homemaker, she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed oil painting, writing poetry and playing the piano. She was an accomplished poet, having won an award and also having her poems published. She formerly worked for Universal Systems in Green Valley where she had won numerous top sales awards.

Survivors: daughters, Nikkie Bennett Wagner and Sandy Bennett Stephenson and husband, Scott, all of Bluefield, WV; son, Keith Allen Bennett and wife, Tammy, of Falls Mills; grandchildren, Amber Wagner Pennington and husband, Michael, of Bluefield, Chad Bennett of Falls Mills, Jaime Bennett of Bluefield, VA; great-grandchildren, Colyn Scott Pennington and Dawson Michael Pennington, both of Bluefield, WV; sister, Mary Ann Odom and husband, Jim, of Hampton; and special friends and loved ones, Brenda Lamastus, Anita Cantrell and Don Marsh, all of Falls Mills.

The funeral was conducted March 15 at 2 p.m. at the Falls Mills United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Klaiber officiating.

Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1808 Jefferson St., Bluefield, WV 24701.
