Edna Mae Maggard
Edna Mae Patton Maggard, 81, of Cedar Bluff, died peacefully April 1, 2004 in a Tazewell nursing home where she had been a resident the past three months following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Ballard C. and Ethel Mae Patton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Jackie Lee Stilwell; one sister, Johnnie Agnes Patton; and one brother, Robert C. Patton.
She was a resident of Baltimore, MD, for many years before moving back to Cedar Bluff three years ago and was a supervisor of the cafeteria with the John Deere Corporation for over 30 years in Baltimore.
She was a member of the Church of God Church in Baltimore. She was a loving and devoted sister, enjoyed being with friends and neighbors, showing expression of love and help to those crossing her path.
Survivors: sisters, Marie L. Patton Pastor of Hertford, NC, Pauline E. Patton German and husband, Buck, of Arnold, MD, Lorraine Patton Robinson and husband, Dean, of Marion; brother, Charles J. Patton and wife, Pearl, of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted April 4 at 2 p.m. at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. David Osborne and Rev. Tony Shrader officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Clinton Russell "Ted" Moore, Sr.
Clinton Russell "Ted" Moore, Sr., 93, of Tazewell, died April 4, 2004 at his home.
Born at Tazewell County, he was born to the union of the late Samuel Walker Moore and Matilda Bandy Moore.
He was the oldest member of the Midway Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) and was father of the church. He was a retired machine operator from the Peery Lime Quarry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years and five months, Dorothy Irene Wisdom Moore; one son, Clinton Moore, Jr.; one daughter, Dorothy Mallie "Pinkie" Moore; six brothers, Tom Moore, Jim Moore, Boo Moore, Sydney Moore, Snook Moore, and Robert Moore; and two sisters, Elizabeth Moore and Lena Dickerson.
Survivors: daughters, Garnette Cecil of Tazewell, India Blair and husband, John, of Coeburn, Miriam Cokley and husband, Richard, of Harrisburg, NC; sister, Carrie Richmond and husband, Roy, of Tazewell; sister-in-law, Edna Dickerson Moore of Tazewell; granddaughters, Cheryl Moore and husband, John, Barbara Jordan and husband, Bill (who were his caretakers), Delphine Wilson and husband, Guy, and Ivy Jenkins and husband, Nat, all of Tazewell, Kimberly Moore of New Jersey, Leslie Graves and husband, Ray, of Coeburn, Tara White and husband, Greg, of North Carolina; grandsons, James Cecil, Jr. of Tazewell, Clinton Hayford and wife, Becky, of Tennessee; 44 great-grandchildren; 37 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. April 7 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Nelson McCall, the Rev. Dr. William Johnson, the Rev. Roy Blake, and the Rev. Jerry Esters officiating.
Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
Hallie D. Mullins
Hallie Dosca Gross Mullins, 91, of Thompson Valley, died April 4, 2004 at Honaker following a lengthy illness.
Born at Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Victor M. Gross, Sr. and Stella Buskell Gross.
She had made her home in Tazewell County her entire life. She was retired from Sears. She was a homemaker and loving mother. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Mullins; one son, Donald Mullins; one grandson, Donald Douglas Mullins, Jr.; and three brothers, Howard Gross, Paul Gross and Victor Gross, Jr.
Survivors: sons, Larry C. Mullins and special daughter-in-law, Marlene of Thompson Valley, Robert R. Mullins and wife, Eula, of Skipperville, AL; sister, Virginia Bijak of Columbus, GA; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted April 7 at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel of Richlands with Rev. Bill Fletcher officiating.
Interment will follow at Hankins cemetery in Richlands.

Skyler T. Rose
Skyler Travis Rose, 4, of Rowe, died March 30, 2004 at his home.
Born in North Wilkesboro, NC, he was a son of Donald Rose of Rowe and Nancy Massie Deskins of North Carolina.
He attended the Fletchers Ridge Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Roger Rose.
In addition to his father and birth mother, survivors include his adopted mother and paternal grandmother, Edith Rose of Rowe; brother, Hunter Logan Massie of North Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Bill Loyd of Kingsport, TN; two half-brothers; maternal grandmother, Linda Cook of North Carolina; maternal great-grandmother, Elizabeth Lester of Honaker; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral was conducted April 1 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Jerry Matney officiating.
Interment followed in the Helton cemetery near the home.
Charlie R. Short
Charlie Ritter Short, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died March 29, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late George and Winona Brown Short.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Stacy Short; two brothers, Beve Short and Stuart Short; and one sister, Mazie Keen.
Survivors: son, Glen Short of San Antonio, TX; brother, Raymond "Toby" Short of Lebanon; sisters, Ann Cole of Statesville, NC, Ruth Talmadge of Tennessee, Nancy Stilwell of Tazewell, Watie VanDyke of Oakwood; special friends and relatives, Jerry, Mary, Shawn and Derek Smith, and Johnny, Debbie, Jessica and Jackie VanDyke; and five grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 1 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Ed Lester officiating.
Burial followed in the Ferrell cemetery at Horne Mountain.
James "Jake" Staples
James Clifton (Jake) Staples, 99, of Falls Mills, died March 21, 2004 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
Born in Pocahontas, he was a son of the late James Armstrong Staples and Agnes Twigg Staples.
He had served in the U.S. Navy.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Crockett and Blanche Gregg; and one brother, Kennith Kirtner.
Survivors: sons, Eddy Staples and wife, Freda, of Falls Mills, A. B. Staples and wife, Dorothy, of Portage, IN; daughter, Doris Wallace of Kingsport, TN; sister, Nannie Danley of Tazewell; brother, Robert Kirtner of Falls Mills; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted March 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Ted Anders officiating.
Burial followed in the Harry cemetery at Falls Mills.
James "Jim" Vance Jr.
James Bert "Jim" Vance, Jr., 72, of Bellville, OH, died April 4, 2004 in his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a short illness.
Born in Swords Creek, he was the son of James Bert, Sr. and Laura Ethel (Dye) Vance.
He had worked at Westinghouse for six years, before taking a position with John Oyster, as a mechanic in his filling station, and concurrently drove a school bus for the Clear Fork School District, as well as a dairy farm milk truck route for the Carnation Company.
Through the 1960s and early 70s, he worked with the automotive department at Montgomery Wards in Mansfield, eventually promoted to Service Manager in the Parts Department.
He returned to Bellville to work with John Kochheiser then at Jake’s Marathon as well as the Clear Fork bus garage, before going into business for himself. From 1977 to 1994, he owned and operated Vance’s Garage, along with his son, Joe, from his home, all the while driving school bus again for Clear Fork.
Throughout the Clear Fork Valley, he was a trusted friend and mechanic, often more concerned about the safety of the person and their vehicle than receiving payment for his services.
He was an admitted sports fan, serving over 25 years on the chain-gang for Clear Fork varsity football games. He volunteered to drive the bus for the Clear Fork Wheels Semi-Pro Football team. Though he loved football best, following the Cleveland Browns, as well as local teams, basketball and other sports kept him occupied year-round.
He was a "Gentleman Farmer", always tending to the gardens around his place, and very helpful in the flowerbeds.
He delighted in his family, especially family reunions, or just any excuse to sit, talk-up, or break out his banjo.
He had attended Kingdom Hall, Mansfield South Congregation.
A sister, Ruth Belcher-Harbin preceded him in death October 8, 2003.
Survivors: wife, Jeanetta M. (Rose) Vance, whom he married
July 14, 1951; their children, Julie A. and Michael Flaherty, James M. and Penny Vance, Janie G. and Turk Britton, Joseph A. and Debbie Vance and Jennifer A. Conover and her fiancé, Brett Spayde, all of Bellville; grandchildren, Randall E. Schwan and Kimberly D. and Steve Queen, all of Mansfield, Bethany E. Flaherty and Rose E. Flaherty, both of Bellville, Cassie and Steffen Lyons of Lexington, J. R. Vance of Bellville, Nathan D. Harry of Mount Vernon, Joshua Vance, Brandy Vance, Chelsea Conover and Danielle Conover, all of Bellville; great-grandchildren, Jared and Elizabeth Schwan and Steffen, Lexie and Michael Lyons; sister, Dorothy Vance of Swords Creek; brother and sister-in-law, Dallas and Juanita Vance of Chesterville; and nieces and nephews Sonnie Belcher of Canton, Judy Daniels of Butler, Lenora Belcher of Bellville, Eddie Belcher of Ashland, Billy Vance of Richlands, Michael Vince of Mount Gilead; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
The funeral was conducted April 6 in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Charles Wise speaking.
Burial followed in Bellville cemetery.
Memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.
Randall "Randy" Whited
Randall "Randy" Gordan Whited, 53, of Richlands, went to be with the Lord April 1, 2004 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Jim and Louvenia Compton Whited, both Swords Creek natives.
He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company and Lear Corp. in Lebanon. He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and attended Harvest Outreach Ministries.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Survivors: wife, Lilly Keen Whited; daughter, Beth Snead of Lebanon; step-daughter, Maria Hunt of Lumberton, NC; stepson, Kenny Smith of Westminster, MD; sisters, Anita Ray and husband, Sam, of Orlando, FL, Betty Cole and husband, Ern, of Bristol, VA, Judy Miller and husband, Jack, of Swords Creek, Karene "Kay" Whited Webb and Donna Plaster and husband, Dickie, all of Richlands; brothers, J. P. Whited and wife, Helen, of Winston-Salem, NC, David "Pump" Whited and wife, Alita, of Belfast; and five step-granddaughters.

Frances M. Wilcox
Frances Marie Wilcox, born January 10, 1925 in Meadowview, died March 29, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.
She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by husband, Arthur S. (Junior) Wilcox, Jr.; one infant son, Johnny Rosenbaum; one brother-in-law, Charlie Wilcox of Richlands; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Parsons of Lenior, NC.
Survivors: granddaughter, Cari Craighead of Alberta; daughter and son-in-law, Murleen and William (Bill) Craighead of Meadowview; brother and his wife, Ray and Ann Jones of Abingdon; sisters, Dorothy Jones and Irma Jones, both of Meadowview, Pat Spradlin and husband, Robert, and their son, David Scruggs, Peggy Meador and husband, Tony, all of Moneta; sisters-in-law, Bly Gobble and Minnie McCracken of Meadowview; brothers-in-law, Isaac Wilcox of Bristol, Kenneth Wilcox of Sidney, OH, Paul Wilcox and Lee Wilcox, both of Meadowview, Coy Parsons of Lenior, NC; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Fred and Linda Catron; and caregivers, Sheila Blevins and Beverly Bobo and members of the Mt. The committal service was conducted March 31 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
