Myrtle Marie Asbury
Myrtle Marie Asbury, 84, of the Thompson Valley section of Tazewell, left this earth March 29, 2004 to walk on the clouds to the loving arms of her heavenly father, husband, granddaughter, mom, dad, brothers and sisters. Leaving behind her grieving family here on earth.
Born at Saltville, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Edith Pearl Pridemore Jones.
She worked for 20 plus years at John’s Motel and Restaurant and also Tazewell Community Hospital as a cook, from which she retired at age 79. She had a love for cooking and enjoyed making her cakes and candy for all to enjoy. She cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her friends. She loved working with her flowers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dave Pierce Asbury; one granddaughter, Pam Asbury Allison; five brothers; and two sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Left to mourn are her son, David Asbury; daughters, Nancy Asbury, Pearl Turley, with whom she made her home, and Brenda Vanhoozer and husband, Jim, all of Tazewell; grandchildren, Scot Vanhoozer, Tony Vanhoozer and wife, Priscilla, Jeff Asbury and wife, Regina, Donna Wimmer and husband, Doug; great-grandchildren, Lacey Beth, Alyssa, Jamie Reid, Alex, Pierce and Derek Vanhoozer, Mason Wimmer, Hannah Asbury-Havens; step-grandchildren, Kristy and Paige Wimmer; and extended family, Linda Reedy, Clara and James Henry Thompson, Karen Newberry and Frances Vandyke.
She was a lady of determination and her wishes were to remain at home surrounded by her family. This could not have been possible without the support of her special caregivers and the Staff of Tazewell Community Home Health: Mildred McClanahan, Judy Altizer, Jane Ellen Horton, Loretta Remines and Pam Rose, all of whom she dearly loved.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. April 1 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Burial followed at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Thompson Valley.
Archie Bennett
Archie Bennett, 71, of Rocky Ridge, died March 27, 2004 at the Kline Hospice House in Frederick.
Born March 19, 1933, in Tazewell, he was the son of the late Archie Bennett Sr. and Janie Booth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Miller Bennett, March 4, 2001, and two sons, Michael S. Bennett and Ralph G. Bunker III.
Survivors: brothers, Douglas Bennett of Tazewell, Jack Bennett of Florida; sisters, Ella Whittaker and Catherine Gipson, both of Tazewell; children, Terry Bennett of Mount Airy, Martin Bennett and wife, Heather, of New Market, Scott Bunker of Hagerstown, Debra Stottlemyer and husband, John, of Rocky Ridge; Brenda Williams and husband, Bill, of Thurmont and Sharon Flesher and husband, Dennis, of North Beach; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were conducted March 31 at 11 a.m. at Thurmont United Methodist Church in Thurmont with the Rev. Michael Fauconnet officiating.

Marcella M. Cantrell
Marcella M. Cantrell, 81, of Whitewood, died peacefully March 31, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born at Red Ash, she was a daughter of the late William Jerry and Gracie Stilwell Cordill, both Red Ash natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Whitewood area and was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, David Lee Cantrell; one sister, Ruby Vance; and one brother, Curtis Cordill.
Survivors: husband of 56 years, Robert L. Cantrell; daughters, Roberta Neal of Cedar Bluff, Frances Holmes and Betty Lowe and husband, Donald, all of Whitewood, Eva Gay Davis and husband, James, of Richlands; sons, Roy Lee Cantrell and Lawrence Cantrell, both of the home; sisters, Helen Shelton and Emily Lowe, both of Doran, Thelma Cantrell of Whitewood; brother, Arvil "Jaybird" Cordill of Raven; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 3 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Troy Lester, Rev. Freddie Dobbs and Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Shirley G. Hart
Shirley Graham Hart, 68, of Easley, SC, wife of Frank D. Hart, died April 2, 2004 at Easley Nursing Center.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late William G. and Rose Stevenson Graham. She was formerly employed with Sangamo Electric and was a member of Victory Baptist Church.
Additional survivors: brothers, John Michael Graham of York Springs, PA, George Clarence Graham of Bluefield, VA, Walter Graham of Chicago, IL, James Graham of Tazewell and William Graham of Macon, GA.
The funeral was conducted April 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road, Easley, with the Rev. Greg Phillips officiating.
Burial followed in Robinson Memorial Gardens in Easley.

Regina H. Hovis
Regina Horne Hovis, 46, of Claypool Hill, died April 5, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of Andrew Horne of Cedar Bluff and the late Virginia Justus Horne.
She was a 1975 graduate of Abingdon High School and a 1979 graduate of Freed Hardeman University of Henderson, TN. She taught school for 24 years. She was chairperson of the Science Department at Richlands High School where she taught Biology. She was a member of Oakwood Church of Christ.
Additional survivors: husband, Keith Hovis; daughter, Jenna Hovis of the home; stepmother, Gaylene Horne of Cedar Bluff; mother-in-law and step father-in-law, Faye and Ed Freeman of Decatur, AL; sister-in-law, Krista Givens and husband, Ricky, of Decatur, AL; niece, Tara Givens; nephew, Trevor Givens; stepbrother, Jerry D. Horne of Raven; stepsister, Kathy Boggs of Summersville, SC; and special friends and loved ones, Jason Shortridge of Pounding Mill, and Karen Webb of Claypool Hill.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. April 7 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Minister Everett Conn and Minister Larry Arnold officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park cemetery at Big Rock.

Anna Marie Kinder
Anna Marie Lowe Kinder, 76, of Abingdon, formerly of Cedar Bluff, died April 2, 2004 at her home following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Cora Griffith Lowe.
Before moving to Abingdon 16 years ago, she made her home in the Cedar Bluff area and attended the Richlands Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Kinder in 1962; two sisters, Jeanette Anderson and Dorothy Salyers; and three brothers, Bill Lowe, Ras Lowe and Raymond Lowe.
Survivors: daughters, Janice Wheeler and Linda Kinder and husband, Harry, all of Lebanon, Shirley Whittington and husband, Wayne, of Richlands; sons, Harold Kinder and wife, Wanda, of Oakwood, Larry Kinder and Dean Kinder, both of Abingdon; brothers, Claude Lowe of Richlands, Ervin Lowe of Maryanna, FL; grandchildren, Michele Kinder Duty, Harold David Kinder, II, Jimmy Wheeler, Greg Wheeler, Melissa Kinder, Jeffrey Kinder, Jennifer Whittington and Meagan Whittington; five great-grandchildren; and several special nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth N. Lester
Elizabeth Nannie Kiser Lester, 92, of Cleveland, VA, died April 2, 2004.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Manley and Margaret Huffman Kiser.
She was a retired registered nurse and member of the Red Cross. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church, the Baptist Missionary Society and a past leader of the Young Women’s Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul V. Lester; one sister, Grace Kiser Whittington; and three brothers, Ellis Kiser, Garnett Kiser and Harold Kiser.
Survivors: daughters, Margaret Laster Enlow of Lebanon, Connie Laster Hess of Cleveland, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Wilson of Santa Barbara, CA, Isaac W. Enlow of Lebanon; and sister, Dorothy Edmondson of Lynchburg.
The funeral was conducted April 4 at 8 p.m. at Owens Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Tom Edwards, Rev. Darrell Harmon and Rev. James A. Massie officiating.
A graveside service was held April 5 at 2 p.m. at Russell Memorial cemetery in Lebanon.
Amber SueAnn Lowe
Amber SueAnn Lowe, 15, of Cedar Bluff, died March 30, 2004 in a Winston-Salem, NC, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of Sammie and Linda Lester Lowe, Jr. of Cedar Bluff.
She had made her home in the Richlands area all of her life and was a member of the sophomore class at Richlands High School and attended the Harmony Community Church in Belfast.
Additional survivors: brother, Anthony Albert Lowe of the home; maternal grandparents, Norman and Dorothy Lester of Cedar Bluff; paternal grandparents, Sammie and Sue Lowe, Sr. of Richlands; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral was conducted April 2 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Mike Dye officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Edward Martin Mabe
Edward Martin Mabe, 61, of Piney Flats, TN, died April 3, 2004 at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Clarence William Mabe and Mary Lou Jeter Mabe.
He was a veteran of the Army and worked for Piston Coal Company for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Andrew Mabe.
Survivors: wife, Roberta Mabe; daughter, Lisa Harman and husband, Michael, of Blountville, TN; sons, Edward M. Mabe, Jr. and wife, Susan, and David W. J. Mabe and wife, Donna, all of Blountville, Steve E. Byrd and wife, Shirley, of Bristol, TN; sisters, Alice Clifton, Elizabeth Baldwin, Brenda Culbertson and Evelyn Baldwin, all of Richlands; brothers, Larry Mabe, and Gary Mabe, both of High Point, NC; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The graveside service and inurnment will be conducted in the National cemetery at Mountain Home at a later date.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory in Bristol, TN, is in charge of arrangements.
Emma Mabe
Emma Mabe, 67, of Easley, SC, died March 31, 2004 at her residence.
Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Strodie and Maggie Reddy Mabe.
She was of the Methodist faith and was a retired home health care worker.
Survivors: nephew, Harold Mabe and his wife, Pam, of the home.
Graveside services were conducted April 3 at 3 p.m. in Greenhills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel at Claypool Hill.
Liberty Mortuary, Inc., Liberty, SC, was in charge of arrangements.
