Vernon Reed, Jr., 77, of Cedar Bluff, died April 5, 2004 following a lengthy illness.

Lee "Bootie" Short
Lee "Bootie" McKinley Short, 66, of Honaker, died April 9, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Drill, he was a son of the late Eran and Pearl Street Short.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of the Church of the Living God in Honaker. He was a coal miner for over 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Alvin Lee Short.
Survivors: wife of 43 years, Brenda Joyce Short; daughter, Rita Kiser of Bristol, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, Earnest McKinley and Wilma Short of Honaker, Markie Lynn and Helen Short of Cleveland; grandchildren, Amanda Kiser, Michael Kiser, Joshua Short, Marketta Short, Brad Short and Chad Short; sisters, Maedean Ray and Martha Horton, both of Honaker, Virgie Clark of Battle Creek, MI, Patsy McKinney of West Virginia; brothers, Troy Short of Kentucky, Joe Short of Honaker, Pete Short of Tennessee; and great-grandchildren, Santanna Dye, McKenzie Kiser, Madison Kiser and Megan Kiser.
The funeral was conducted April 12 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Arnold Street officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Virginia M. Smoot
Virginia Marie Maxwell Smoot, 93, of Tazewell, died at her home April 6, 2004.
Born at Pisgah, she was a daughter of the late John Rador Maxwell and Minnie Cecil Maxwell.
She was a member of the Main St. United Methodist Church. She attended Mary Washington College and was a graduate of Concord College. Prior to her marriage, she taught elementary school at Maxwell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Richard Smoot, Jr.; one sister, Goldine Higginbotham; her husband’s siblings, Frank, George and Katherine Smoot; and one nephew, John Cecil Fisher.
Survivors: sister, Billie Fisher; nephews, Claude Maxwell (Buddy) Fisher; Richard Allen Fisher and George Witten Smoot Jr.; and close family members, Emily Fisher Edmonson, Dana Fisher, Meredith Fisher, Kelly Fisher, Anne Fisher, John B. Fisher and Max Fisher.
Graveside services will be conducted April 14 at 11 a.m. at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.

Billy G. Street
Billy Gene Street, 49, of Baptist Valley, died April 7, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of Rev. Virginia Cox Street of Doran and the late John Lee Street.

Sidney A. Tackett
Sidney Allen Tackett, 72, of the Home Creek Section of Route #1, Grundy, died April 6, 2004 in Mountain View Nursing Home, Elkhorn City, KY, following an extended illness.
Born at Dorton, KY, he was a son of the late Merale and Madgie Moore Tackett.
He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was of the Baptist faith. He was instrumental in organizing the first Life Saving Crew in Buchanan County, served as a special Police Officer in Buchanan County and was a former employee of CSS Coal Corporation.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Survivors: wife of 53 years, Mildred Whited Tackett; daughter, Patsy and husband, Richard Collins, of Grundy; sons, Ronnie Tackett, Steve Tackett and wife, Fannie, and Terry Tackett, all of Grundy; sisters, Martha Silcox of Hellier, KY, Lorraine Mullins of Whitesburg, KY, Peggy Warren of Detroit, MI; brothers, Ralph Tackett of Shelbiana, KY, James Tackett of Bowling Green, KY, Randy Tackett and Donald Ray Tackett, both of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 8 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Britt Jackson and Bobby Jackson officiating.
Burial followed in the Belcher and Lee cemetery at Nanny’s Branch on Home Creek, Rt. #1, Grundy.
Services were conducted April 7 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bessie D. Tiller
Bessie Dora Wilson Tiller, 86, of Council, died April 11, 2004 in a Tazewell hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Jake and Ora Belle Ball Wilson.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Free Will Baptist faith and a member of the Council Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Evans Tiller; one son, Arthur Tiller; one daughter, Ruby Tiller; one grandson, Jackie Lee Tiller; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors: sons, Lonnie Tiller of Rosedale, John Tiller and Don Tiller, both of Roanoke, Carles Tiller of Council; daughters, Sue Harris of Rosedale, Nora Ellen Goad of Roanoke; brothers, Homer Wilson and Earl Wilson, both of Honaker; sister, Edith Connors of North Carolina; grandchildren, Craig Tiller, Brandy Wilson, Marcus Harris, Carolyn Mays, Debbie Akers, Junior Clemons, Ricky Clemons, Phyllis Williams, Lonnie Holt, Jr., Loretta Holt, Kendall Tiller and Marcy Tiller; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted April 15 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Cecil Music officiating.
Interment will follow in Tiller cemetery at Council.
Dorothy Vance
Dorothy Vance, 75, of Swords Creek, died April 8, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Bert and Laura Dye Vance.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was of the Protestant faith. She was a graduate of Honaker High School and a member of Finney Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Robert Vance; one sister, Ruth Belcher Harbin; and one brother, Jim Vance.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sandy Vance of Richlands; brother, Dallas Vance of Ohio; grandson, William Darrell Vance of California, Jeremy Robert Vance of Richlands; great-granddaughters, Lauren Ashley Vance and Victoria Elysse Vance; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral was conducted April 10 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Ray Willis
Ray Willis, 85, of Bland, died April 6, 2004 at his home.
He was the son of the late Curtis and Didema O’Quinn Willis of Dickenson County.
He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Bland Masonic Lodge #206 and the Bland VFW Post. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII.
Survivors: wife, Thelma Singleton Willis; daughter, Jane Sparrow of Wytheville; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Mari Willis of Darlington, SC, John and Jane Willis of Richlands, Jerry and Judy Willis of Wytheville; other family members, Warrant Officer Harlan G. Sparrow III, serving in Iraq; grandchildren, Mark Willis, Scott Willis, Craig Willis, Lee Willis, Jane Curtis Warner, Aaron Willis, Jenifer Marks, Virginia Warner, Sarah Martin, Jane-Erie Sparrow, Harlan Sparrow IV, Hillary Sparrow; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 9 at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. John Henry Conley and Rev. Norman Wilhoit.
Interment followed in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post #9 conducted military graveside rites.

Clyde "Lank" Wysor
Clyde Edward "Lank" Wysor, 76, of Bluefield, VA, died March 29, 2004 at a Bluefield hospital.
Born in Honaker, he was a son of the late Vern Wysor and Beulah Jackson Wysor.
He was a retired Area Supervisor for Appalachian Power Co. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a graduate of Graham High School.
Survivors: wife, Ida Virginia Richardson Wysor; brothers, Jack Wysor and wife, Peggy, of Bluefield, VA, Jody Wysor and wife, Phyllis, of Clover, SC; and 19 nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted March 31 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Joseph A. Addison
Joseph Allen Addison, 20, of Cedar Bluff, died April 3, 2004 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Jerry K. and Shirley Brown Addison of Cedar Bluff.
He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a 2001 graduate of Richlands High School. He was a 2003 graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College where he was awarded 1st place in computer network and 2nd place in state competition. He was attending Bluefield State College in his Junior year, was on the Dean’s List, and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in 2004.
Joseph, always polite and considerate with a friendly personality was an outstanding young man who will always be remembered.
He was preceded in death by a paternal grandfather, B. M. "Ken" Addison.
Additional survivors: sister, Jerri-Kaye Mabe and husband, Brian, of Nashville, TN; half-brothers, Kenneth DeWayne Addison and Roy Lee Addison, both of Evansville, IN; paternal grandmother, Catherine P. Addison of Richlands; maternal grandparents, Bert E. and Clara Brown of Cedar Bluff; nieces and nephews, Ginger Addison, Jessica Addison, Laci Nicole Addison, McKinley Jace Addison, Zachary Addison, Brandy Addison, Regan Addison and Brittney Mabe.
The funeral will be conducted April 7 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Norman Desrosiers officiating.
Burial will be private.
