James H. Slate
James Harvey Slate, 74, of Raven, died April 27, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late John Dewey and Garnett Taylor Slate.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Pinion and three brothers, Raymond P. Slate, John Douglas Slate and Earshel W. Slate.
Survivors: wife, Madge Broadhead Slate; daughter, Sherry Whitaker of Raven; son, Danny Slate and wife, Martha Ann, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Helen Reynolds of Richlands, Joyce Agee of Ashland, OH, Lorraine Plaster of Chesapeake, Joan Carty of Sewanee, FL; brothers, Steve Slate of Steelsburg, Dean Slate of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, James Whitaker, Samantha Whitaker and Edie Beth Slate; and great-grandchildren, Isaac Brown, Tyler Brown and Haley Brewster.
The funeral was conducted April 30 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Chaplain Phil Parker and Rev. Dr. Thomas Conley officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V.
Clercy L. Tiller
Clercy Lee Barton Tiller, 91, of Bee, went to be with the Lord on April 29 at her home.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Rhoda Stevens Hess.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Duty Pentecostal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carson Barton; her second husband, Dewey James Tiller; three children Beecher Barton, Carson Barton, Jr. and Claudie Tiller; one son-in-law, James Stanley Farmer; two grandchildren, David Michael Perrigan and David Barton; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Brooke Rasnake and Hunter Timothy Howard; three sisters; two brothers; and one very special aunt, Nora Cook.
Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Vernelle and Hershell Perrigan of Clinchco, Georgia and Franklin O’Quinn, Hester and Billy Rasnake, and Barbara and David Honaker, all of Bee, Jean and Buck O’Quinn of Lebanon, Glenna and Dexter Ray of Vansant, Brenda and Jerry Fletcher of Rowe; sons and daughters-in-law, Elden and Inez Barton, Lester and Sandra Tiller and Rev. James and Yvonne Tiller, all of Bee; brother, Evans Hess of Clinchco; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of other special family members and friends.
The funeral was conducted May 2 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Jeffrey Tiller and Rev. Leon O’Quinn officiating.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Joan M. Webb
Joan Marie (Ruth) Webb, 72, of Brooksville, FL, formerly of Shortt Gap, died April 29, 2004 at the home of her son following a long illness.
Born at Shortt Gap, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Ollie Mae Cordle Lowe.
She was of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis McKinley Webb; one daughter, Carol Jean Webb; three brothers Raymond Lowe, Kermit Lowe and Aut Lowe, Jr.; and two sisters, Doris Shreve and Edna Harrison.
Survivors: sons Carter L. Webb and wife, Debbie, of East Palestine, OH, Tony C. Webb and Debbie of Brooksville, with whom she made her home; brother, Bill Lowe of Doran; sisters, Ann O’Quinn of Princeton, WV, Margrett Elswick of Raven, Laura Whitt of Swords Creek; grandchildren, Destiny Webb, C.L. Webb, Jessica Webb and Dwayne Webb; and great-grandchildren, Santana and Scotty.
She will be missed by many friends and special nieces, Jean Tuggle, Cheryl Noel, Kay Whited, Betty Reedy, Alice Cordle and Carrie Mullins.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 3 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.
Burial followed in the Ball cemetery at Road Ridge.
June E. White
June Elaine White, 63, of Tazewell County, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on May 2, 2004.
She was born Nov. 29, 1940 in Bluefield, VA, and born again April 16, 1977. She was the daughter of the late William Everett and Janie Prince Pertee.
A graduate from Virginia Tech with a Masters in Education, she taught school in Buchanan County from 1978 to 2002. Her favorite years teaching were those at Whitewood High School.
She was a published poet, writer, and genealogist; but, above all else her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ was cherished most. She lived her life for the glory of God. Her steadfast love and faithfulness to the Lord inspired many. Being a woman of the utmost excellence, she fought a good fight and finished her course while keeping her faith as she pressed toward the mark of the high calling of God.
Survivors: sisters, Nancy Lowe and Bucky McConnell; son, Philip Lester and wife, Geralann Lester; daughter, Jane Lester; grandson, Zachary Lester; and spiritual son, Greg Stanley.
The funeral was conducted May 3 at 8 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton, WV, with Rev. Ricky Cole officiating.
Private family gravesite burial was held May 4 at Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA.
Patty L. Baker
Patty Lockhart Baker, 42, of North Tazewell, formerly of Buchanan County, died April 16, 2004 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center from an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Roosevelt and Christine Meadows Lockhart of North Tazewell.
She was a graduate of Tazewell High School Class of 1979. She was a devoted wife and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Lorn Edward Meadows, and paternal grandparents, Abe and Mary Lockhart.
Additional survivors: husband, Burley Lee Baker; brothers, Casper Lockhart of Notasulga, AL, Keister Lockhart and Delanor and wife, Robin Lockhart, all of North Tazewell; maternal grandmother, Clarcy Meadows of Oakwood; and eight nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted April 19 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Randy Webb, Edd Tiller and Tim Norris officiating.
Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Services were conducted at the funeral home April 18 at 7 p.m.
The Rev. Roy R. Baldwin
Sunrise, sunset, quickly go the years! God’s angels came for His beloved servant on April 12, 2004 at his home.
Born in Whitetop, he was the son of the late Boyd and Lillie Weaver Baldwin.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and loving companion of 70 years, Dollie G. Baldwin, on June 27, 2000; one sister, Clydie Rose; six brothers, Lacy, Clarence, Wise, Glecen, Archie and Dyer Baldwin. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He dedicated his life to God in March 1950 and never faltered in his faith and abiding love for God. He has been a Minister of the Church of God since 1952 and was ordained on May 20, 1966. He along with his wife, Dollie, established the Endwell Church of God, Squire, WV, and served as the Pastor from 1952 until his retirement from the ministry in 1979. He was a member of the Dial Rock Church of God, Tazewell. He was the owner and operator of Baldwin’s General Store in Squire from 1945 until 1973.
Left to cherish his memory are sons, Roy J. Baldwin of Augusta, GA, Charles E. Baldwin of Bluefield, VA; daughter, Delores B. Crouse of Tazewell; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to all.
The funeral was conducted April 15 at 11 a.m. in Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Phil Combs officiating with brief remarks by the Rev. Robert Mitzelfelt and the Rev. John Canning.
He was buried beside his wife at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV.
George F. Barnes
George F. Barnes, 84, of Tazewell, died April 15, 2004 in Roanoke.
Born in Pocahontas May 25, 1919, he was a son of the late George F. and Virginia Barns Rosenbaum.
Following graduation from V.P.I. in 1941, he served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. A member of Tazewell Presbyterian Church, he served his church faithfully as a deacon, elder, and teacher of the Women’s Bible Class for many years. In 1963, he was elected to fill the unexpired term of the late Harry Stuart in the Virginia Senate. Elected to a full term in the Senate in 1965 on the Republican ticket, he paved the way for other Republicans who followed him to electoral success from "the fightin’ 9th" Congressional District. He served in the Senate until 1975. In 1978, Governor John Dalton appointed him chairman of the State Compensation Board, where he served until 1982. A farmer and independent coal operator, he was a member of the Virginia Farm Bureau, President of the Tazewell County Farm Bureau and a founding member and vice president of the National Independent Coal Operators Association.
Survivors: wife of 58 years, Grace G. Barnes; sons, Frank Barnes and wife, Dora, of Tazewell, John Barnes and wife, Nolie, of Midlothian, Jeff Barnes and wife, Tamera, of Newport News; daughters, Jenna Byrnes and husband, Robert, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Gracie Lutz and husband, Hirlye, of Birmingham, AL, Jann Clarke and husband, Taylor, of Midlothian; brother, Bill Barnes of Hemet, CA; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 18 at 2 p.m. in Tazewell Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. James H. Grant officiating.
Interment followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

Mabel L. Burkett
Mabel Louise Burkett, 88, of Bluefield, VA, died April 11, 2004 at Westwood Health Care Center.
Born in Nebraska, she was a daughter of the late John Koppleman and Julie Buchanan Koppleman Sexton.
She retired from Sealy Mattress Co. after many years of service and had attended church at the Wrights Valley United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Allen Burkett, and one sister, Vivian Tickle.
Survivors: daughter-in-law, Dorothy Burress Burkett of Miami, FL; grandson, Ted Allen Burkett of West Palm Beach, Fl; niece, Judy Tickle McPeake of Radford; special friend, Marge Rose of Bluefield, VA; and several cousins.
The funeral was conducted April 14 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Lacy Brooks officiating.
Burial followed in the Maple Hill cemetery.
Nora J. Clevinger
Nora Jackson Clevinger, 95, of Maxie, died April 12, 2004 at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George C. and Elisa Presley Jackson.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church #2. She was a graduate of Honaker High School, Radford College and Pikeville College. She was a retired school teacher for the Buchanan County School System, a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rans D. Clevinger, Jan. 3, 1995; three sisters, Eura Arrington Fuller, Rusha Fuller and Lois Reynolds; and three brothers, Lymon, Earl and Beecher Jackson.
Survivors: son, Johnny Rans and wife, Rebecca Roberts Clevinger of Taylorsville, NC; sisters, Helen Fuller and Kelsa Marie Fletcher, both of Bristol, VA, Jo Marion Sword of Knoxville, TN; brother, Harry Cowan Jackson of Honaker; and grandchildren, Heather Clevinger, Holly Clevinger and Laurel Clevinger and fiancé, Justin Annis.
The funeral was conducted April 14 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Elmer Sexton, Roger Coleman and Howard Daniels officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Arville J. Dales
Arville John Dales, 70, of Tazewell, formerly of Buchanan County, died April 17, 2004 at his home in Tazewell following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Noah Dales Sr. and Dicey Raines Dales.
He was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and was a retired coal miner.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin Dales, Charlie Raines, Noah Dales, Jr. and James Lester Dales, and one sister, Beulah Dales.
Survivors: sisters, Betty Deel and husband, Lando, of Tazewell, Audrey Yates and husband, George B., of Vansant; brother, Benny Dales Sr. and wife, Eurlie, of Pounding Mill; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted April 20 at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Elmer Church and Bob Fields officiating.
Burial followed in the C.H. Deel cemetery on Deel Fork near Harman.
Services were conducted April 19 at 7 p.m. at the church.
Shirley D. Fitzgerald
Shirley Dean Crouse Fitzgerald, 70, died April 17, 2004 at the home of her daughter in Dendron. The cause of death was a brain tumor.
Born at Dix Creek, she was a daughter of the late Gus Crouse and Leola Wayne Ringstaff Crouse.
She was a 1950 graduate of Tazewell High School. She served in the Women’s Army Corps until her marriage on Nov. 8, 1952, to Donald Thomas "Skip" Fitzgerald Sr., who died July 31, 1992.
Survivors: children, Michelle Ann Fitzgerald Clark of Dendron, Donald Thomas Fitzgerald Jr. of Colonial Heights, Joseph Gus Fitzgerald of Harrisonburg, Mark Allan Fitzgerald of Claremont; sister, Joanne Felts of Bluefield; brother, Jackie Crouse of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandsons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The remains will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Tazewell.
