Gertrude B. Dills
Gertrude Brown Dills, 64, of Wardell, died April 28, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of Mary O. Lambert Brown of Tazewell and the late Reese W. Brown.
She was a lifelong resident of the Wardell area and was a member of the Raven Assembly of God Church.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Dills, and three brothers, Bill T. Brown, Charlie R. Brown and Joseph K. Brown.

Brown and wife, Martha, of Thompson Valley, Reese Brown, Jr. of Tazewell, Robert L. Brown and wife, Darlene, of Adamstown, MD; and grandchildren, Chris Dills, John Dills, Catherine Dills and Blake Dills.
The funeral was conducted May 1 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Fannie I. Dye
Fannie Idell Dye, 87, of Richlands, died April 30, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late James M. and Dora Belle Dixon Absher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conley E. Dye, one son, James P. Dye, four brothers and five sisters. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.
Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Clifford (Bonnie) Keen of Cedar Bluff, Mae Vandyke of Richlands, Faye Brown of Lebanon; grandchildren, Scottie Smith, Sharon Short, Chasity Brown and Dana Keen; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. May 3 in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Dannie D. Short officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Larry "Cotton" Jones
Larry Gilmer "Cotton" Jones, 52, of the Doran Bottom section of Richlands, died April 27, 2004 at his home.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Henry McDonald Jones, Sr. and Jane Ann Smith Jones.
He had spent most of his life in the area and was a member of the Honaker United Methodist Church. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Andrea Jones, and one special son, Shawn William Ford.
Survivors: brother, Henry McDonald "Mac" Jones, Jr. of Johnson City, TN; his significant other, Peggy C. Ford of the home; uncle and aunt, Warren and Hazel Harrison of Rosedale; special caretaker, Patsy Green; and six cousins.
The funeral was conducted April 30 at 12 noon at the Honaker United Methodist Church of Honaker with Pastor Mike Ward and Rev. Rusty Ward officiating.
Interment followed in West Hills cemetery in Lebanon.
Military graveside honors were conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
Honaker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Hazel E. Kennedy
Hazel Ellen Kennedy, 86, of Raven, died April 26, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late George and Laura Cordle White, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Raven area and was a retired cook for the former Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands. She attended Raven Assembly of God Church in Raven and New Hope Assembly of God Church at Claypool Hill.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Abner Kennedy, two sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: daughter, Linda Lou Brown of Charlottesville; sons, Donald William Kennedy and wife, Carol, and Kenneth Harold Kennedy, all of Raven; sister, Sylvia Bowman of College Estates section of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Jerry White of Princeton, WV, Max White of Bristol, VA, Ralph White of Germany; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted April 29 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Claudie Throgmartin and Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Donald E. Lambert
Donald Evertt Lambert, 56, of Pulaski, formerly of Seaboard, went to be with the Lord May 3, 2004 in a Dublin health care facility following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Walter and Delphine Mathews Lambert.
He was a carpenter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lambert.
Survivors: former wife and close friend, Freda Lambert Hoback, of Dublin; sons, Michael Lambert and Kevin Lambert and wife, Rhonda, both of Dublin; sisters, Nancy Brag, Edith Roush, Teresa Smith and Ruby Wagner, all of Greensboro, NC, Patricia Kinder of Honaker; brothers, Daniel Lambert of McCoy, Richard Lambert, Carl Lambert, Ed Lambert and Jess Lambert, all of Greensboro, NC; and grandchildren, Micah, Brittany, Josh and Jessica.
The funeral will be conducted May 5 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Pastor Raymond Buddy Herald officiating.
Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Christopher Parsons
Christopher Dean Parsons, 34, of Tazewell, ended his journey in life April 29, 2004 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN, after a long illness.
Born in Mansfield, OH, he was a son of Charles Ray Parsons and Maysie Atwell Parsons of Tazewell.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carl Henry Parsons and Beulah Virginia Parsons, and maternal grandparents, George Presley Atwell and Nannie Elizabeth Crockett Atwell.
Additional survivors: wife, Kathy Parsons; son, Alex Parsons of the home; daughters, Ashley Parsons and Shantel Parsons, both of the home; brother, Charles A. Parsons of Bland; sisters, Virtinia Parsons of Richmond, Pam Necessary and husband, Michael, of Tazewell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe Remines and Gracie Katherine Remines of Tazewell; five nieces; three nephews; one great-niece; special friends, Eddie and Donna Crouse of Tazewell, Linda Shelley and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Harris; many other friends, including nurses and caregivers of the Richlands Dialysis Center; and special caregivers, Dr. In Young Park, Lisa Dunford and Judith Toney.
The funeral was conducted May 2 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Kelvin Seabolt and the Rev. Jack Martin officiating.
Burial followed at the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Thompson Valley.
Mary A. Phillips
Mary Agnes Phillips, 69, of Cedar Bluff, died May 2, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Dante, she was the daughter of the late Melvin Leonard and Cassie Jenkins Lambert.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Phillips; one son, Eddie Darrell Phillips; one brother, Earnest Lambert; and one sister, Shirley Lambert.
Survivors: daughter, Carolyn Shrader and husband, Curtis, of Baptist Valley; sons, Larry Phillips of Baptist Valley, Wayne Phillips and wife, Deana, of County Line Road; brothers, J.C. Lambert of North Tazewell, Howard Lambert of Sun Valley; sister, Lorraine Lambert of Richlands; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted May 6 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Grady McGlothlin and Rev. Barry Absher officiating.
Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Lillian R. Scalf
Lillian Ruth Stacy Scalf, 59, of Vansant, died April 30, 2004 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Leona Blankenship Stacy.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Baptist faith. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jackie Scalf, July 17, 1989; one daughter, Beverly Bailey; one son, Gregory Scalf; one sister, Edith Davis; and three brothers, Lonzo Stacy, Clyde Stacy and Carl Stacy.
Survivors: daughter, Lisa Childress of Keen Mountain; sons, Ronald Bailey and Richard Scalf, both of Vansant, Mark Scalf of Wise; sisters, Etta Faye Blankenship of Hurley, Evelyn Blankenship of Marion, Ruby Coleman of Florida; brothers, Tommy Stacy and Harold Stacy, both of Hurley; and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted May 3 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Elmer Church, Bob Fields and Jackie Church officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Services were conducted at the funeral home May 2 at 7 p.m.
James H. Slate
James Harvey Slate, 74, of Raven, died April 27, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late John Dewey and Garnett Taylor Slate.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of U.M.W.A.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Pinion and three brothers, Raymond P. Slate, John Douglas Slate and Earshel W. Slate.
Survivors: wife, Madge Broadhead Slate; daughter, Sherry Whitaker of Raven; son, Danny Slate and wife, Martha Ann, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Helen Reynolds of Richlands, Joyce Agee of Ashland, OH, Lorraine Plaster of Chesapeake, Joan Carty of Sewanee, FL; brothers, Steve Slate of Steelsburg, Dean Slate of Cedar Bluff; grandchildren, James Whitaker, Samantha Whitaker and Edie Beth Slate; and great-grandchildren, Isaac Brown, Tyler Brown and Haley Brewster.
The funeral was conducted April 30 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Chaplain Phil Parker and Rev. Dr. Thomas Conley officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V.
Clercy L. Tiller
Clercy Lee Barton Tiller, 91, of Bee, went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2004 at her home.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Rhoda Stevens Hess.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Duty Pentecostal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carson Barton; her second husband, Dewey James Tiller; three children Beecher Barton, Carson Barton, Jr. and Claudie Tiller; one son-in-law, James Stanley Farmer; two grandchildren, David Michael Perrigan and David Barton; two great-grandchildren, Morgan Brooke Rasnake and Hunter Timothy Howard; three sisters; two brothers; and one very special aunt, Nora Cook.
Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Vernelle and Hershell Perrigan of Clinchco, Georgia and Franklin O’Quinn, Hester and Billy Rasnake, and Barbara and David Honaker, all of Bee, Jean and Buck O’Quinn of Lebanon, Glenna and Dexter Ray of Vansant, Brenda and Jerry Fletcher of Rowe; sons and daughters-in-law, Elden and Inez Barton, Lester and Sandra Tiller and Rev. James and Yvonne Tiller, all of Bee; brother, Evans Hess of Clinchco; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of other special family members and friends.
