Virgie Harman
Virgie Harman, 93, of Richlands, died June 13, 2004 at her home.
Born in Buchanan Co., she was the daughter of the late Major Wallace Keene and Alifire Clark Keene.
She was a member of the Richlands Assembly of God Church and was a loving mother and a dedicated Christian.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, C.H. Harman; two daughters, Hazel Hylton and Gladys Griffitts; and one brother, Garcie Keen.
Survivors: sons, Kindris Harman and wife, Dorothy, of Tazewell, Clyde Harman and wife, Trula, of Oakwood, Jack Major Harman, and wife, Tommie, of Cedar Bluff, Billy Harman and wife, Pansy, of Tazewell, Roy Harman and wife, Deloris, of Windham, OH; daughters, Elnor Lemmon and husband, William, of North Canton, OH, Cleo Sargent and husband, Bobby, of Cedar Bluff; daughter-in-law, Shirley Harmon of Bristol, VA; son-in-law, Alden Hylton of Akron, OH; 25 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and special friends and neighbors, Bob and Peggy Webb of Richlands, and Jack and Mary McGlothlin of Richlands.
The funeral was conducted June 15 at 11 a.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Pastor Buddy Herald and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.
Marvin Harris
Marvin Harris, 76, of Bristol, TN, passed away from this life to be with the Lord, June 11, 2004 in an Abingdon hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late Luther and Malissa Miller Harris.
He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a disabled coal miner and mechanic. He was a member of the Charity Pentecostal Tabernacle in Bristol, TN.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Connie Harris, and two brothers, Paul Harris and Ervin Harris.
Survivors: devoted wife of 27 years, Jane Harris; daughters, Bonnie Gillie and husband, Brent, of Bristol, VA, Christal Wilkerson and husband, Billy, of Fredricksburg, Stephanie Brown of Tampa, FL, Master Sargent Tracey Smalls and husband, Staff Sargent Tyrone Smalls, of Fort Stewart, GA; sons, Johnny Harris and James Brown and wife, Sharon, all of Bristol, VA, David Harris and wife, Buna, of Abingdon, Warren “June Bug” Brown of the home; sisters, Thelma Harris of Lebanon, Darlene Breedlove of Abingdon, Leona Sims, Betty Dale and Arbutus Ratliff and husband, Luther, all of Honaker; brother, Lloyd Harris and wife, Sue, of Swords Creek; sister-in-law, Opal Harris of Grove City, OH; grandchildren, Dwayne Woodard, Miranda Rosenbalm, Douglas Harris, Tammy Davis, Justin Tyler Harris, Joshua Bott, Jenny Wilkerson, Julie Wilkerson, Christopher Lee, Devanta Huitt and Tyria Smalls; special niece, Debbie Puckett of Abingdon, who helped lead him back to the Lord; and close neighbors, Joe Templeton and Ted Mottern; several nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends and relatives.
The funeral was conducted June 13 at 7 p.m. in the Charity Pentecostal Tabernacle on Anderson Street, Bristol, TN, with Pastor Jimmy Epperson, Brother Tracey Puckett and Brother Richard Gunn officiating.
Graveside services were conducted June 14 at 1 p.m. at the Glenwood cemetery in Bristol, TN.
Military graveside honors were conducted by Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard of Abingdon.
Honaker Funeral Home, of Honaker, was in charge of arrangements.
Jeanette Hess
Jeanette Hess, 81, of Richlands, died June 10, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late John, Sr. and Flora Copley Simmons.
She was a member of Community Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lewis Hess, Sr.; one son, Bobby J. Hess; three brothers, Sherman Simmons, Luther Simmons and John Simmons, Jr.; and three sisters, Lilly Shelton, Bertie Christian and Lula Elswick.
Survivors: daughters, Janice Watson Tester and Drema Patton and husband, Charles, all of Richlands, Judy Pruitt and husband, Wayne, of Paint Lick; son, Charles Lewis Hess, Jr. of Cleveland, OH; brother, Herman Simmons of Belfast; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren,

Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Ronnie “Squeak” Lovell
Ronnie “Squeak” Shields Lovell, 61, of Bluefield, VA, was called home to be with the Lord on June 3, 2004 in Tazewell Community Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of the late Thomas Lovell and Elizabeth Jewel (Judy) Collins.
He loved hunting, fishing and anything else that had to do with the outdoors. He had served in the US Army having served in Germany.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James (Jim) Lovell.
Survivors: sisters, Joann McDaniel and husband, Henry, of Bluefield, Sandra Mathews and husband, Newton, of Richmond; brothers, Doug Lovell and wife, Mary, and Thomas Wade (Peanut) Lovell, all of Falls Mills; special aunt, Ruby White of Bluefield; and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 6 at 1 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Tony Ellis officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.
Graveside services were conducted by the VFW Memorial Post 9696, Bluefield, VA, and the Pocahontas American Legion Post 14.
Roy Lee Norman
Roy Lee Norman, 72, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, died June 12, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Cedar Bluff, he was a son of the late Guy and Lena Brown Norman, both Tazewell County natives
He was raised in the Cedar Bluff area and was a 1951 graduate of Richlands High School. After proudly serving his country during the Korean War as a 1st Lt. in the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC, he returned to Tazewell County where he was a respected residential contractor for many years.
He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Lodge #260 A.F. & A.M. for almost 50 years, a member of the Cedar Bluff Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #104 of Richlands.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Guy “Norm” Norman; one sister, Anna Maude Ray; and one brother, James E. Norman.
Survivors: wife of 47 years, Ruth Martin Norman; daughters, Beth Norman of Bradenton, FL, Rebecca Whittington of Spotsylvania; sisters, Mary Whitt and Nancy Norman, both of Richmond, Edith Hansel of Roanoke; and grandsons, Cameron Williams and Jordan Williams.
The funeral will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Interment will follow in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
Georgie M. Sharp
Georgie Marie Stevenson Sharp, 87, of Raven, died June 11, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital following a long illness.
Born in Buchanan Co., she was the daughter of the late John and Lucinda White Brown.
She was a lifetime member of the Casey-Short V.F.W. Post 9640 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Full Gospel Temple Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Stevenson; her second husband, John Sharp; three brothers, Carlos Brown, Audney Brown and John Earl Brown; and two sisters, Della Shepherd and Mable Keen.
Survivors: daughters, Hazel Fuller of Richlands, Ruby Augustein and husband, Don, of Minerva, OH; sons, John R. Stevenson, Jr. and wife, Eula, of Dothan, AL, James Earl Stevenson and wife, Elsie, of Grundy; sister, Betty Robinette of Wytheville; brother, Blaine Brown, of Carlisle, PA; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

John D. Smith, Jr.
John Dailey Smith, Jr., 71, of Tazewell, died June 13, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, following a long illness.
Born in Dry Fork, he was a son of the late John Dailey Smith, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Smith.
He was a lifelong member of the Dry Fork Assembly of God Church. He was a retired coal miner, a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Smith and James Smith, and two sisters, Vertie Mae Basford and Helen Dunford.
Survivors: his loving wife of 42 years, Helen Rose Retherford Smith; sons, Julius Cleaver of Richlands, Doug Cleaver and wife, Kim, of Tazewell, James Smith and fiancée, Teresa, of Whitewood, Thomas Smith of Indianapolis, IN; daughter, Sherrie Sawyers and husband, Robert, of Tazewell; brother, Ronald Smith and wife, Loretta, of Tazewell; sisters, Violet Mitchell and husband, Carl, and Dorothy Pruitt, all of Tazewell, Ann Halfacre of Dayton, OH; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill with the Rev. Troy Bartley officiating.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell.
Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home by 1:30 p.m. today.
Hester J. White
Hester Jane White, 78, of Palatka, FL, formerly of Whitewood, died June 14, 2004 in a Welaka, FL, rest home following a lengthy illness.

John Whitt, Sr.
John Troy Whitt, Sr., 67, of Richlands, died June 11, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Roy Holland and Ellsie Beatrice Brown Whitt, both Tazewell County natives.
He had made his home in the Richlands area all of his life and was a retired coal miner from Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation. He was of the Holiness faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Jane Whitt, and one brother, Roy Raymond Whitt, Jr.
Survivors: wife, Nancy Jane Hunnell Whitt; sons, John Troy Whitt, Jr. and wife, Susan, of Richlands, Roy Lee Whitt and wife, Barbara, of Claypool Hill, Robbie Scott Whitt and wife, Marianne, of Cedar Bluff, daughters, Melinda Jean Childress and husband, Clinton, of Jewell Ridge, Donna Joan Beavers and husband, Ronald, of Pounding Mill; sisters, Ruth Markham and Joan Shelton, both of Richlands; grandchildren, Timothy Hunnell, Kayla Childress, Brad Beavers, Jason Beavers, Zachary Childress, Kerra Whitt, and Maddie Whitt; and several nieces and nephews.

Scottie L. Wickham
Scottie Lee Wickham, 53, of Bluefield, died June 2, 2004 in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Born in Bluefield, he was the son of Vida Underwood Wickham of Bishop and the late Kensey Wickham.
He was employed by the Norfolk and Southern Railroad for over 30 years, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and was a member of the Bluefield Church of God. He was a member of the United Transportation Union Local 655.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Scott Wickham, and one brother, Timothy Wickham.

Gary R. Baldwin
Gary R. Baldwin, 49, of Daleville, died June 3, 2004 from a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Henry Nathan and Leah Vernie Boyd Baldwin.
He had been a resident of the Roanoke area for several years and a member of Big Fox Community Church. He was self-employed as Baldwin Contracting and Siding Company.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Della J. Bowman Baldwin in 2001; one son, Marcus Ronald Baldwin; and three brothers, Samel Marcus, Roger Lee and Mitchell Baldwin.
Survivors: wife, Meg Baldwin; son, Jody Brent Baldwin and wife, Jessica, of Troutville; sisters, Velva Charles and Leah Mullins, both of Grundy, Opal Hunt and Pauline Baldwin, both of Alexandria, Beulah Boyd, Laura Manier and Judy Hagy, all of Vansant; and brothers, Henry Baldwin of Tazewell, Bradley Baldwin and James Curtis Baldwin, both of Vansant.
The funeral was conducted June 7 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ancil Childress and Dr. J. Randolph Daniels officiating.
Burial followed in the Anderson cemetery on Leemaster, Vansant.
