Billy Ray Hill, Sr.
Billy Ray Hill, Sr., 64, of Vansant, died June 15, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, following an extended illness.
Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Ernie Dale Hill Hill.
He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was a member of Liberty Church of Christ. He was a retired Mine Foreman for Consolidated Coal Corporation with 39 years of service.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery Wayne Hill.
Survivors: wife, Ettie Mae Jackson Hill; daughter, Rhonda and husband, Ernest Gilbert, of Davenport; son, Billy Ray "Buddy" Hill of Grundy; sisters, Betty Jean Matney of Church Hill, TN, Carolyn Sue Miller of Whitewood; brothers, Evg. Jim Hill, Bobby Hill and wife, Lucille, and Donald Hill and wife, Gladys, all of Vansant; and grandson, Anthony Cooper Gilbert.
The funeral was conducted June 17 at 11 a.m. with Evg. Jim Hill officiating.
Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Services were held at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel June 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Jacqueline Jackson
Jacqueline Helen Jackson, 75, of Pounding Mill, went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Byrd and Wintie Compton Gilbert.
She was a member of the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church and a member of the Lester Repass United Methodist Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Senior Friends and Elderberries.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sandra Gilbert, and two brothers, Raymond Gilbert and Bernard Gilbert.
Survivors: husband of 56 years, Andrew D. Jackson; daughters, Carolyn Taylor and husband, Danny, of Claypool Hill, Priscilla McReynolds and husband, Garry, of Richlands, Marsha Bryant and husband, Jerry, of Glade Springs; grandchildren, Adam D. Taylor, Whitney Ann McReynolds, Brittany Nicole Bryant, Katelyn Drew McReynolds, Andrew Eli McReynolds, Chelsey Danielle Bryant; brother, James Gilbert of Belfast; sisters-in-law, Ellen F. Jackson, Helen Robinson, Ella Ringstaff and husband, Harry, and Dorothy Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m., June 19, at the Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Jenkins officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Josephine Knowlton
Josephine Adelaide Knowlton, 77, of Cedar Bluff, died June 18, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Maine, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mabel Stevens Knowlton.
She was a member of the Claypool Hill Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
Survivors: daughter, Carol McTague and husband, Don, of Bandy; brother, Bobby Knowlton of Maine; sister, Phyllis Blake of Maine; grandchildren, Jennifer Gallagher and Jaime McTague; and great-grandson, Riley Gallagher.
The funeral was private.

William Keith Lowe
William Keith Lowe, 46, of Cedar Bluff, died June 20, 2004 at a Richlands hospital.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Della Faye Shreve Lowe of Richlands and the late William Harley Lowe.
He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area most of his life and had served in the U. S. Army.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sparks Lowe.
Additional survivors: sister, April Dawn Smith of Richlands, and maternal grandmother, Nell Shreve of Bluewell, WV.
Graveside services will be conducted June 23 at 11 a.m. at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with Rev. Buddy Herald officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens. There will be no visitation.

James S. Mabe
James Sylvester Mabe, 75, of Richlands, went to be with the Lord June 17, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James Franklin and Maude Ellen Keen Mabe, both Tazewell County natives.
He was a life long resident of the Richlands area, was a former employee of M. O. Warner, and a retired tipple operator with Permac Coal Company. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving in the Occupation of Germany after World War II and responded to the Korean War in the early 1950’s.
He attended Trinity Assembly of God Church at Cedar Bluff.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Lee Mabe, sister, Opal Cook, and an infant sister, Paulene.
Survivors: his devoted wife of 56 years, Dortha Wingo Mabe; daughter, Patricia Fay Lockhart and husband, Billy, of Yorktown, sons, Phil S. Mabe of Richlands, Ronnie W. Mabe and wife, Cathy, of Rock Hill, SC; sisters, Edna Byrd, Goldie Miller, and Emily Armstrong, all of Richlands; brother, Doug Keen of Richlands; grandchildren, Joshua Mabe, Jennifer Mabe, Katrina Farrow, Kristy Corbett, and Kevin Lockhart; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ethel Watson and Rev. Danny Bostic officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Nellie Sue Reed
Nellie Sue Reed, 97, of Bluefield, VA, died June 16, 2004 at a Bluefield, VA, Healthcare Center in Bluefield following a brief illness.
Born in Thompson Valley, she was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Mollie Wyatt Brooks, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a graduate of Radford State Teachers College and taught in the Tazewell County School System for 35 years. She was a member of the T.E.A., V.E.A., and N.E. A. She was a life long resident of the Tazewell County area and was of the Methodist Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Brooks and Mary Brooks Harman; five brothers, Atlle, Charles, Arthur, Alton, and Kirk Brooks; one great nephew, Sidney E. Harman, III; and one great great niece, Kayla Hudson.
Survivors: nieces, Alice Yates and husband, Claude, and Barbara Holmes and husband, Ralph, all of Thompson Valley, Louise Brooks Albert of Collinsville; n ephews, Sidney E. Harman, Jr., and wife, Judy, of Chesapeake, Kirk Harman and wife, Shirley, of Mt. Hope, Robert Lee Harman of Bluefield, VA; great nieces, Melanie Everett of Chesapeake, Paula Gallimore and Lori Hudak, both of Beckley, WV, Sharon Hudson, Debbie Osborne and Joan Neel, all of Tazewell; great nephew, Claude (Randy) Yates of Tazewell; four great great nieces; six great great nephews; and special friends, Betty Foy and Sue Huels.
Graveside services were conducted June 19 at 11 a.m. at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Bluefield, VA.

Ella Sue Shortridge
Ella Sue Shortridge, 65, of Rowe, died June 16, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Rosa Dillow Terry.
A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of the Lick Creek First Church of God.
She was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse, having worked at Grundy Hospital for 32 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby L. Terry, Sr.
Survivors: husband, Don Shortridge of Rowe; sons, Tommy Shortridge and his wife, Dwana, of Pilgrim’s Knob, Terry Shortridge of Chester; daughter, Tammy Campbell of Rowe; grandsons, Christopher Simmons and Joshua Campbell; granddaughters, Chelsea Shortridge, Cortney Shortridge and Linsey Shortridge; many nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends.
The funeral was conducted June 19 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Jeff Justice and Sister Kathy Cantrell officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Linda Lou Silcox
Linda Lou Cole Silcox, 49, of Piney Flats, TN, went to be with the Lord June 15, 2004 at her residence.
She was a native of Richlands and a daughter of Christine Shell Cole and the late Graham Cole, Sr.
She was a graduate of Richlands High School. She was co-owner of Silcox Muffler Center in Johnson City and a member of Piney Flats Baptist Church where she was a leader of the Moms-In-Touch program.
Survivors: husband, William "Tommy" Silcox; daughter, Kelly Silcox of Johnson City; son, Blake Silcox of the home; sisters, Brenda Lane and Merry Fullen, both of Richlands; brother, Graham "Pete" Cole, Jr., of Richlands; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 17 at 8 p.m. in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel in Bristol, TN, with Allen Davis, TH.D., Pastor, officiating.
The committal service and interment was conducted June 18 at 11 a.m. at the graveside in Glenwood cemetery.

Beatrice B. Turner
Beatrice Betty Chapman Turner, 87, of Rock Hill, SC, died June 15, 2004 at Piedmont Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Pud Barett Chapman and the late Elizabeth Mae Allison Chapman.
She was a native of Richlands. She was a homemaker and of the Assembly of God faith. She was the widow of Raleigh Turner.
Survivors: son, Milton O. Turner of Rock Hill; daughters, Sue Price of Cedar Bluff, Elizabeth Simmons of York, SC; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted June 19 at 1 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church with Rev. D. L. Erickson officiating.
Interment was private.
