Billy Ray Lyons
Billy Ray Lyons, 72, of Doran, died June 25, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Stoneghee, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Ethel Mae Lyons.
He was a member of the First Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Patsy Gail Lyons, and one sister, Lois Fay Lyons.
Survivors: wife of 53 years, Lillie Mae Puckett Lyons; sons, Steve Lyons and wife, Nancy, of Richlands, Billy Ray Lyons and wife, Donna, of Lake May, FL, Chuck Lyons of the home; grandchildren, Stephen Hayden Lyons and Grayson Hunter Lyons; brothers, John Wesley Lyons of Bluefield, VA, Eugene E. Lyons of Richlands, Bobby Joe Lyons of Baptist Valley; and sister, Peggy Lowe of Paintlick.
The funeral was conducted June 28 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Vonley T. Pruitt officiating.
Burial followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
Albert (A.P.) Meade
Albert P. (A.P.) Meade, 85, of North Tazewell, died June 25, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Drill, he was a son of the late George and Carrie Hollins Meade.
He served three years in the United States Army and was a decorated veteran of World War II. He was employed by U.S. Steel at Gary, WV until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of Barns-Beavers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7136 in Tazewell and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He attended the Allegheny Wesleyan Methodist Church in Tazewell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Albert P. Meade, Jr.; one daughter, Mary B. Meade; two brothers, Glen Meade and Howard Meade; and three sisters, Viola Owens, Frankie Tuggle, and Margaret Tuggle.
Survivors: wife of 62 years, Frances J. Meade; sons, Jimmy Meade and wife, Vivian, of North Tazewell, Rick Meade and wife, Donna, of Paintlick; daughters, Jeanette Meade of Manassas, Susie Owen and husband, Jeff, of Cleveland; sisters, Dorothy Keene of Cedar Bluff, Juanita Davis of Richlands; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted June 27 at 2 p.m. at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell with the Rev. Don Elswick officiating.
Military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Casey-Short VFW Post #9640 of Claypool Hill.
Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell was in charge of arrangements.
Josephine Stacy
Josephine Matney Stacy, 86, of Richlands, died June 21, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she and was a daughter of the late Milton and Lydia Dawson Matney, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in the Richlands area most of her life and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. "Jeff" Stacy; one daughter, Wilma Jean Stacy; two sons, John and Wayne Stacy; one granddaughter, Guyda Lynn Lester; one sister; and one brother.
Survivors: daughters, Phyllis Cox of Oakwood, Audrey Looney of Lebanon, Belva Mitchell of Spartanburg, SC; sons, Harrial Stacy and wife, Linda, of Vansant, Bill Stacy and wife, Wanda, of North Tazewell, Bob Stacy and wife, Mary Ann, of Chula Vista, CA, James Stacy and wife, Janice, of Tazewell; brother, Elzie Matney of Grundy; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted June 24 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
John B. Tizen
John Burgess Tizen, 85, of Claypool Hill, died June 25, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center from a long illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Pete and Gussie Tizen.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Fred Tizen.
He was a graduate of Richlands High School and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Richlands. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired coal operator. He was a former manager of the Richlands Airport and the owner of the Merry T. Stables in Tazewell, where he owned and showed American Saddlebreds and Walking horses. He was also a licensed pilot and a commissioned Kentucky Colonel.
Survivors: wife, Madeline, of 63 years; son, John G. Tizen of Wardell; daughter, Mary Lawson and husband, Doug, of Claypool Hill; and granddaughters, Natalie DeVries and husband, Garth, of Annapolis, MD, Lesley Lawson of Chicago, IL, and Lauren Lawson of Knoxville, TN.
At his request, he was cremated.
Family and friends will gather for a memorial service to celebrate his life July 1 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Richlands with Rev. David Brannock officiating.

Homer S. Alley
Homer S. Alley, 74, of Cedar Bluff, died June 20, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born at Cedar Bluff, he was the son of the late James Harvey and Narcie Naomi Lankford Alley.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the Military Police and was a disabled coal miner. He was a member of the Christian Advent Church at Middle Creek.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Midford Alley.
Survivors: wife of 50 years, Doris Blankenship Alley; son, Michael S. Alley and wife, Kathy, of Cedar Bluff; daughters, Karen Brown and husband, Gene, Teresa Alley and Keitha Yates and husband, Mickey, all of Cedar Bluff, Rhonda Earls and Gene Laney of Tazewell; grandchildren, Mandee Brewer, Adam Brown, Craig Earls, Amber Earls, Rachel Alley, Hannah Alley, Matthew Yates and Halee Yates; great-granddaughter, Lauren Earls; brothers, Homer Ralph Alley of Abingdon, John H. Alley of Cedar Bluff; and sisters, Freda Rose and Olivia Bokish, both of Bluefield, VA.
The funeral will be conducted June 23 at 1 p.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bill Shook and Roy Meadows, Jr. officiating.

Hunter Britton
James Donald Britton, II and Hunter William Britton, died June 9, 2004 and June 10 respectively, at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Panama City, FL.
They were preceded in death by great-grandfather, Jewell Potter; great-grandmother, Ovalee Bone; great-grandfather and grandmother, Donald and Virginia Britton; and great-grandfathers, Charles Boothe and Edward Harrington.
Survivors: parents, Staff Sgt. Margaret H. Coon
Margaret H. Coon, 75, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 2004.
She was a loving mother and a devoted wife.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Joe Coon.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Jo Anna and Art Beeler; granddaughter, Meghan Beeler; brother, Raymond D. Howery of Tazewell; sisters, Nanola Hagy and Doris Corell, both of Tazewell, Nell Hagy of Roanoke, Mary Thompson of Bradenton, FL, Mamie Bucklen of Saugerties, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley T. Gilbert
Shirley T. Gilbert, 66, of Richlands, died June 14, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late William Reece and Rebecca Virginia Alley, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a lifetime member of the Free Pentecostal Holiness Church at Murray Hollow near Jewell Ridge, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for over 40 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Short, and three brothers, Bobby Alley, Billy Alley and Terry Alley.

Mollie E. Hagerman
Mollie Eva Bryant Hagerman, 89, of Bandy, died June 19, 2004 at her home following a long illness.
Born at Jewell Ridge, she was the daughter of the late William Floyd Griffith and Laura Alice Smith Griffith.
She was a charter member of the Bandy Chapel Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by first husband, Gallie (Kise) Bryant; second husband, Alex Hagerman; one daughter, Galline Bryant; four brothers, Robert Griffith, Charlie Griffith, Floyd Griffith and Henry Wade Griffith; and sisters, Florida Meadows, Ruthie Meadows and Lila Patrick. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation.
Survivors: daughters, Henry Alline Jesse and husband, Walter, of Bandy, Jean Trivett and husband, Jim, of Bristol, TN, Alice Tatum of Cedar Bluff, Ann Brewster and husband, Bob, of Gloucester; son, Creed Bryant and wife, Andrea, of Claypool Hill; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m., June 22, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Pastor Walter Jessee and Pastor Barry Jessee officiating.
Burial followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.
Curtis J. Hess
Curtis Junior Hess, 68, of the Flat Rock section of Honaker, died June 16, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late A.G. and Lula Dye Hess.
He was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed by Pittston Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA and the Honaker Men’s Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters and one grandson, Joseph Foleno.
Survivors: wife of 46 years, Ruth Hess; daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Kenny Hall of Flat Rock; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Cindy Hess and Rick and Shelia Hess, all of Flat Rock; granddaughters, Kristen Hess, Brittany Hess, Laura Hess and Hannah Hess; and brothers, Elmer Hess of Honaker and Harlan Hess of Cambridge, OH.
The funeral was conducted June 18 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Peerman Lester officiating.
Interment followed in the Compton cemetery at Flat Rock.
