Opal G. Cruey
Opal Gaynell Cruey, 70, of Raven, died June 24, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Raven, she was the daughter of the late Melvin George and Caulbert Palmer Cruey.
She attended the Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener.
Survivors: devoted sisters, Mary Frances Cruey and Meldie Juanita Cruey, both of Raven; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. June 27 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Elder Ben Combs and Elder Ked Stacey officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Virginia A. Fife
Virginia Anne Akers Fife, 77, of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Bluefield, VA, died June 25, 2004 in Florence, SC, as a result of complications from surgery.
Born in Amonate, she was the daughter of the late Harry T. and Maude Ellen Brawley Akers.
She was educated in the Tazewell County Schools and Concord College. She worked with and taught mentally challenged children for both the Southern Regional Program and Wade School. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bluefield and the Society of Stranders, North Myrtle Beach.
She was a loving Mom and a helping friend to all.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Fife, and one brother, Charles "Smokey" Akers of Green Cove Spring, FL.
Survivors: son, Ronald Thomas "Tommy" Fife and wife, Beth, of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Deborah Ann Quesada and husband, Ray, of Florence, SC; grandsons, Jayson Ray Quesada of Florence, Rhett Thomas Fife and Kyle Glen Fife, both of Myrtle Beach; sisters, Marie Roman of Charlotte, NC, June Tozer and husband, Al, of Marion, OH, Phyllis Gianfarcaro and husband, Nick, of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Betty Akers of Green Cove Spring, FL; brothers, Jack Akers and wife, Margaret, of Green Cove Spring, Pete Akers and wife, Juanita, of Bluefield, VA; brother-in-law, Jack "Doc" Fife and Rusty Fife and wife, Clara, all of Bluefield, VA; sister-in-law, Nancy Whitman and husband, Charles, of Bluefield, VA; and 30 nephews and nieces.
The funeral was conducted June 29 at 1 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Mortuary with the Rev. Lacy Brooks officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road, Bluefield, VA.

Tex Hickman
Tex Hickman, 49, of Jewell Ridge, died June 24, 2004 in a Bristol, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late Rush and Lexie Ward Hickman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one half brother, Lloyd Miller, and one half sister, Evelyn Cook.
Survivors: wife, Susie Hickman; sons, Chad Hickman, Larry Joe Hickman and David Hickman, all of Ollie, IL; brothers, Jack Hickman of Jewell Ridge, Tenner Rex Hickman of Texas; sister, Diana Anderson of Regina, KY; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. June 26 at the Big Branch cemetery in Buchanan County with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.
Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy (Dot) Horn
Dorothy (Dot) Horn, 78, of Cedar Bluff, died June 24, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Myrah Perkins.
She was a member of the Faith in Christ Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Horn; one son, Danny Perkins; two sisters, Magaleen McGlothlin and Stella Juanita Saul; and two brothers, Lance Perkins and Ruley Mickles.
Survivors: grandson, Wesley Perkins of Cedar Bluff; granddaughter, Tanya Hess of Bandy; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Calen Hess, Takeesha and Billy Jean Perkins; sisters, Mrs. McKinley (Kathleen) Boyd and her twin sister, Mrs. Clarence (Thelma) Hess, both of Swords Creek; special sister-in-law, Thelma Osborne of Raven; and former daughter-in-law, Brenda McReynolds of Cedar Bluff.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. June 28 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Roy Wilson and Rev. Robert Tiller officiating.

James L. Jackson
James Lester Jackson, 53, of Richlands, died June 24, 2004 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of Rosa Richardson Jackson of Richlands and the late Homer (Pie) Jackson.
He made his home in Louisiana for 25 years before moving back to Richlands one year ago. He was of the Holiness faith.

Jackson and wife, Rosa Lee, of Pine Creek; sisters, Jewell Casey and fiancé, George Johnston, of Cedar Bluff, Shirley Jamison and husband, Hank, of Swords Creek, Linda Cruey and husband, Bill, of Kannapolis, NC, Janet McGlothlin and husband, Denny, of Richlands; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. June 26 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Danny Short and Rev. Jim Richardson officiating.
Burial followed in the Richardson Family cemetery at Pine Creek.
Larry W. Jackson
Larry W. Jackson, 55, of Richlands, died June 25, 2004 at the home of his son, Derrick Jackson, in King, NC, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Colonel Floyd and Oakley Hale Jackson, both Richlands natives.
He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area, a 1968 graduate of Richlands High School and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors: wife, Sandra K. Jackson; daughter, Sherry Jackson Graf of Richlands; son, Derrick W. Jackson and wife, Heather, of King; sister, Brenda "Susie" Hampton and husband, Glenn, of Pounding Mill; and granddaughters, Laura Graf, Kayla Graf, Sydney Jackson and Erynn Jackson.
The funeral was conducted June 29 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Dannie Short and Rev. Rick Pruitt officiating.
Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.
Leler Keen
Leler Keen, 84, of Rowe, went to be with Jesus and join her loved ones gone before her June 20, 2004 at Maple Grove Health Care Center in Lebanon.
Born in Rowe, she was a daughter of the late Fullen and Alice Street Hess.
She had spent most of her life in the area and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Keen; one daughter, Dollie Keen; two sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Harlis and Patty Keen of Rowe; daughter and son-in-law, Macie and Gene Beck of Rowe; grandsons, Douglas Beck and wife, Fely of New Mexico, Tim Keen and wife, Joanie of Wheeling, WV, Adam Keen and wife, Michelle, of Roanoke; great-granddaughter, Ellexis Beck; great-grandsons, Gabriel Beck, Aksel Beck, Tanner Keen, Noah Keen and Braeden Keen; brothers, Brady Hess of Rowe, Elihue Hess of Honaker; honorary granddaughter, Susie Street; and special neighbors, Duke and Phyllis Street.
The funeral was conducted June 25 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Michael Justice officiating.
Interment followed in the Street cemetery at Rowe.
Ruby L. Keen
Ruby Louise Johnson Combs Keen, 65, of the Maple Gap section of Swords Creek, died June 22, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Martha Jane Stevens Johnson. She was of the holiness faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde B. Combs, Jr.; five brothers, Stuart Johnson, Easley Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Robert Johnson and Floydelbert Johnson; sisters, Eleanor Shelton and Virginia Tuggle; and one granddaughter, Selena Bobadilla.
Survivors: husband, Isaac Keen; daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Antonio Bobadilla; brothers, Andrew Johnson and wife, Emma, and Gordon Johnson, all of Maple Gap; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson of Swords Creek; adopted son, Ben Keen; granddaughter, Angel Bobadilla; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted June 24 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Trevor Vance officiating.
Interment followed in the Johnson cemetery at Maple Gap.
Betty L. Lambert
Betty Louise Lambert, 73, of Tazewell, died June 27, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born at Shawver’s Mill, she was a daughter of the late George David and Leona Malinda Dalton Lambert.
She had retired from Acme Supermarkets in Tazewell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Jane Wilson Martin and Martha Ann Crawford, and one brother, George Dale Lambert.
Survivors: sisters, Carol Rose and husband, Richard, and Nancy Dillon and husband, Bill (June), all of North Tazewell; brother-in-law, Jesse J. Crawford; aunt, Mrs. Archie Kidd of Wolf Creek; special nephew, Rick Rose of North Tazewell; and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted June 30 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet cemetery, in Gratton, with the Rev. Rodney Lawson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. June 29 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell.
Those wishing to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. June 30.
Carl E. Lawson
Carl Edward Lawson, 38, of Wrights Valley, Bluefield, VA, died June 23, 2004 in a Bluefield hospital.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of Jean Erlene Quesenberry Lawson of Springville and the late William Samuel Lawson.
He was of the Holiness faith and graduated from Graham High School in 1985.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by one brother, David Allen Lawson; one sister, Loretta Mae Lawson; and grandparents, Will G. and Flossie Hayton Lawson and Johnny and Etta Mae Harris Quesenberry.
Additional survivors: wife, Loretta Cornwell Lawson; stepsons, John Cornwell and Chad Cornwell of Wrights Valley, Bluefield, VA; brothers, Johnny William Lawson and wife, Regina, of Bluefield, VA, Mark "Timothy" Lawson and wife, Connie, of Springville; sisters, Melissa Buchanan and husband, Danny, of Springville, Carol Bowers and husband, Elmer, of Richland, NC; aunt, Phyllis Howington of Tazewell; seven nephews; and eight nieces.
